The original manga would also be in Pretty good for me, good for what it is but the sillier tone of it is not why I fell in love with GITS and it's a little too horny for me. The Oshii films are masterpieces of psychological cyberpunk storytelling, philosophical discussion about identity and moody atmosphere. The Stand Alone Complex show is also phenomenal overall and occasionally peak but is a 2 season show so some of it is better then other parts, but it has the strongest characterization of the Major and the rest of section 9 and uses it's cyberpunk setting to explore political themes more. Solid State Society is the film for SAC so it's more of that. Arise is also pretty good in the same ways but doesn't feel quite as interesting in it's story and there's less of it which also goes for it's associated film, and also the SAC follow up 2045 which also has the below average 3D animation that does not look as good as the usually gorgeous 2D. The american live action one with the straight white woman playing a bi/pansexual Japanese woman that also completely misinterprets the themes of GITS to make a generic "technology bad" plot doesn't exist.

Made this because the new one that seems to be sticking closer to the original manga just got announced.

One time a friend's roommate was editing an AMV for a club DJ friend to show during their set (either at a club or a convention IDEK) and he was using scenes from GITS 2, and he said "I swear to fuck if I have to watch this bitch's head explode one more fucking time" and that memory stuck with me.

was watching the commentary track for gits 2 innocence and anytime batou's dog shows up the conversation shifts to be entirely about the dog

Just saw this with the boyfriend at the Gateway. Fantastic! Super psychedelic and hyper esoteric, just the way I like it. With Batou in the lead this time, it felt like Blade Runner starring the Terminator with hints of the Matrix. I found the experimental art style especially captivating, like tripping balls on a Playstation. With such a heavy emphasis on the uncanny valley in the story, the medium immaculately matches the message. Even when the cgi doesn’t look great, it’s always engaging. I also found the mirrored parallels to the first movie fascinating. While the antagonist of both films is a barely mobile conscious automaton, the Puppet Master was a digital consciousness who aspired to ascend and becoming “more than”, while the villain in this story was a human consciousness invested in becoming a doll, or otherwise “less than”. Two completely opposite approaches in achieving perfection: to become all things, or nothing at all.
