The third entry in my Lackadaisy x Boardwalk Empire series, Gillian Darmody!
I had some trouble deciding how to depict her at first, as there's no one outfit that really screams 'Gillian' to me. But when thinking of this character, there is a specific scene that my mind always goes to - one so vicious and cathartic - which I decided to depict here instead. If you know, you know!
As for her cat design, I did think about going for a more brownish look like a calico or tortoiseshell - but I didn't want to accidentally cross over with Mitzi's color pallet too much. More importantly, I wanted to give a striking sort of dichotomy to her appearance - one that might capture the extremities of her character. Hope folks enjoy ^^
When Gillian Darmody tells Roger McAllister that her husband left her the house, and then begins to describe Jimmy....
I think she may officially be the most disgusting character in the entire series. Yes, Nelson Van Alden is still a disturbed antisemitic fanatic. Yes, Gyp Rosetti is still an unstable mass murderer. Yes, main character Nucky Thompson is still generally reprehensible as a crime boss with all that that entails. That’s all by the by, because she is sickening.
I feel bad for how it started, I truly do. She was a victim herself initially, preyed upon by the Commodore for years with no recourse. She was only 13 when the Commodore first picked her out of a crowd, and he ran the city. She could no more refuse him than she could defy a king, and I won’t blame her for anything she did to survive under his power.
But she has spent the entire series trying to continue the abuse on everybody who is under her sway in any way. How long was she sexually abusing Jimmy in his childhood before he finally ran away to the army? How long was she planning to steal Angela’s son to claim as her own, even before she first let the idea slip in season one? How many other young men did she seduce because they looked like her son and call them by his name?
i remember watching boardwalk empire and yknow it’s a show about actual gangsters and criminals during the american prohibition era. downright despicable people committing crimes from the very light to the especially heinous. and yet, and yet, outside of the tumblr bubble (which still had an active bwe fandom at the time), i’d come across thread after thread of why margaret thompson or gillian darmody or daughter maitland or lucy danziger or freaking billie kent was Actually the Worst Character on the show. when willie was Right There. people will always find a reason to uwu-ify the guys and dismiss the women as ‘annoying’. every time.
