this can be a canon throwback with the kang family series universe, while dae-ho and you were in the games, but that depends on the next season.
warnings: season three is not out at the time that I have written this. everything is based off of the teaser trailer. the content below is what I have quickly written that possibly could've happened to dae ho and you during the games (and before the family stuff!)
the room was too quiet for what it held.
everyone here were just survivors now. the rebellion failed and gi hun being brought back from the coffin gave you a bad feeling. the chances of survival were low.
inside of this strange room, filled with accents of yellow, everyone stood in a loose circle around the towering gumball machine in the center.
the floor was glossy and the silence from players sat heavy like wet clothes clinging to the skin.
dae-ho stood next to you, still.
he is not stiff and not poised... just… still. paralyzed.
you basically had to drag him, hand to hand, into this room. before, the guards hung the rebellion players in the huge stairwell room. the sight nearly made dae-ho throw up. you forced yourself to look away.
the gumball machine looked normal. you looked up at him, your hand unconsciously resting on the bump beneath your loose shirt.
you were still five months pregnant. seo-ah was still small and still safe inside of you.
“daeho?” you whispered, barely audible.
he didn’t answer. the ex-marine's jaw was clenched so tight you swore it might snap. the man's eyes didn’t move. they stayed locked on the machine like it had teeth.
daeho's breath was shallow. it was shallow as if he was forgetting to inhale altogether.
you blinked up at him again, confused.
you hadn’t seen him like this.
he was not like this in the beginning, not during the first few games. he was scared then, yes. this… this was something worse. a different kind of fear. a kind that swallowed a man whole from the inside.
“participants,” the robotic voice crackled overhead.
you flinched.
dae-ho didn’t.
“the next game will require team assignments. these teams will be determined randomly, by color.”
you sighed.
“please approach the dispenser one by one. turn the handle. you will receive a colored ball. then, proceed to your designated area.”
you looked back at dae-ho.
he was shaking now but only slightly. however, it was enough that you could see it in his hands.
you reached out, gently touched his wrist.
“hey,” you whispered.
“it’s okay. we’re okay. i’m right here.”
at this point, many players were already stepping up and being assigned their colors. red or blue.
he finally looked at you.
your man's eyes...gosh, they looked like he was already mourning something.
maybe you. maybe himself. maybe both.
he opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
"player 388," the guard calls out.
daeho only takes a heavy exhale through his nose, and then he stepped forward away from you.
the man's steps were reluctant and dragging. he approached the gumball machine like it was an execution block.
click. click. click.
he turned the handle.
a soft thud.
he reached into the compartment and pulled out the ball.
blue.
he stared at it for a moment too long. maybe if he blinked, it would turn into something else. anything else.
slowly, his eyes found yours again.
he didn’t speak, but you saw it in his face.
the panic. the helplessness. the apology.
you nodded at him, gently, trying to be strong. for him. for your baby. for yourself.
“go,” you mouthed.
daeho's lips pressed together.
he walked to the blue side, each step heavier than the last.
the next person went.
another blue.
the tension in your chest grew with each second.
suddenly, it was your turn.
your feet carried you toward the machine while your mind begged you to stop. everything in your body wanted to run and to scream.
you wanted to get back to dae-ho’s side and glue yourself there.
you couldn’t.
the guards could shoot, you knew they would since the players rebellion already has them being stricter than ever.
you placed your hand on the handle.
turned it.
click. click. click.
the thud sounded louder this time.
you reached in.
pulled it out.
red.
you stared at the ball in your palm, the color almost surreal under the fluorescent lights. red.
you had never hated a color more in your life.
your heart dropped.
you didn’t react outwardly and you didn’t flinch. your face did not show it.
however, your stomach churned and your eyes burned. your throat closed up, and for a second, you couldn’t breathe.
you turned your head slowly.
dae-ho was already looking at you.
horrified.
the man's expression broke you.
he took a step forward like he could protest, like he could say no, like maybe if he pleaded hard enough, someone would let you switch. the guards didn’t even have to lift their guns. the unspoken rules were already loud enough.
you forced yourself to walk.
one step.
another step.
you didn’t even feel your feet move. you only felt the growing weight of fear pressing against your chest.
you reached the red side, eyes locked on dae-ho until the very last second.
geum-ja was already there, arms crossed like she wanted to cry. she had to watch her son go over to the blue side. she watched you come by her side.
you stood beside her, but you didn’t speak.
you wanted to cry. gosh, you wanted to cry. your hands were on your belly now. your fingers shaking against the fabric as if holding yourself together physically would stop you from falling apart.
what if you never saw him again?
what if he died in this next game?
what if you did?
what if seo-ah never got to see the outside of this place?
“participants,” the robotic voice said again.
you stiffened.
“the next game will now begin. red team, please head to the door on your left. blue team, please proceed to—”
the doors behind you hissed open.
you looked toward them.
dae-ho was still staring at you, his mouth parted like he was about to shout your name.

I am a patchwork quilt of everyone I've ever loved
I’ve always been drawn to flowers. I could never remember why, even when I named myself after one. (My first ever friend was called Rosie. I was always envious - how full of life she seemed to be!)
I feel a faint sense of dread when I go to clasp a necklace. Only sometimes does my conscious mind drift to her, and it is only then that I wonder if she ever took hers off. I never consider that she was lying. If it wasn’t the glue around that clasp, it was something else that stayed like a noose around her neck.
I wear my watch on my right wrist. I am not left-handed, but the sister who put her watch on my hand when I was three was. It was blue and plastic and cheap but it became mine. She beamed at me: now I’ll always be able to tell you the time! I didn’t bother to learn how to read its analog face for the longest time. I had a reason to keep asking her that way.
I stumble on a word I haven’t memorized, or I teach a younger student how to pronounce that letter combination, and suddenly I am in primary, sitting on a white rug as my second sister gently sounds out the words in front of us. My parents beam at me that night as I say a new word right, and I proudly tell them how my sister taught me. It was all her, I would say. Look how Good I must be for her to love me.
A scar graces my left knee. It looks old and worn, like nothing, but sometimes I see her fingerprint there, as if the gloves she wore when mopping up my blood had vanished. She told me later, when she poured the disinfectant on two instead of three, that it would fade, that someday I would forget. I’m glad she was wrong. I sent her a message a few years ago, and never heard back. But I see her profile sometimes, and how she sees my stories. We grew apart. I’m trying to learn that that’s okay, but I still wonder if she ever misses me. I see her out of the corner of my eye when my knee throbs with a dull, faint pain. I miss her, but at least her fingerprint remains.
On my thirteenth birthday, and for many birthdays after, an alarm on my phone would go off, reminding me to go train dolphins with a sister. I deleted it years ago. I regret it every time it never rings.
I’ve always remembered when Earth Day is. My schools have always made a day of it. But now, on April 22nd, I think not of the earth, but of my twin flame. On that day, I give my thanks to the earth, for I was born of her, but I spend my life loving her. For a year, I was coaxed with sickly sweet words away from her; away from everyone. When I was back, there was no question of if she would welcome me, even through my guilt. She is the one who stayed by me, helped me up, loved me. Who keeps loving me, as I keep loving her.
I prick my finger as I sew, and each time I remember how she would chastise me, reminding me to wear a thimble. And each time, I smile and say I’m fine. I understand better, though, when she cuts herself on the tape dispenser and I carefully tear tape for her the rest of the year.
When I sew on the machine, though, I never feel quite sure of myself. It goes to fast, faster than I can think, with more strength than I am sure of. So when I inevitably fuck up, I smile, remembering her laugh as she pretends to groan at how long it will take to undo, thank god I know better than to start with a backstitch. I know that she is reminding me that it can be undone, no matter how tedious. Stitch by stitch, I fix what I’ve ruined.
I tell people I love them so easily. Anyone who changes my life, even in the smallest of ways, I cannot bear the thought of them not knowing. They say to live each day like it's your last, but they're wrong, it's not you that matters: live each day like it's their last. Loving in secret is a special torment when the guilt feels crushing. I never told him. I never can. I hope he knew, I’m sure he knew how much he was loved. Right? He knew? Tell me he knew. Please.
I go shopping, and absentmindedly look for the good apples - the ones that crunch, that tear sharply, that are just perfectly sweet or bitter. Sometimes I don’t realize until I get home and have apples I probably won’t eat. I offer them to my friends instead, because my partner is states away. They laugh when I send them the pictures, though, and tell me to eat one in their honor. I do.
There are some things I can’t see without itching to gift. Penguins and owls and squirrels and bird and those godforsaken minions and coffee and turtles and irises and this one shade of blue– I’ve left with glass hummingbirds in my pocket before realizing I have no one to give it to.
I’m not in tears over my homework, but I would be if I were alone. Instead, it hits 10:00pm - 22:00, just for them - and it’s done. It’s over and I can’t go back and they're asking for my three favorite candies and I’m thrown because I want to sob - with relief or stress, I’m not sure - but they say they’re going to get me some. Because they’re proud of me. Like it’s obvious. And when they learn I’ve never had any chocolate candy, they come back with a handful. I split the KitKat and hand them half and they watch me, some mix of delight and horror in their eyes, as they halve the Twix and Milky Way and York for us to share. I’m laughing at an irony they don’t see; it blends into every other joy here. So this is it, I think. This is what it’s like.
I keep thinking about the things I do and the parts of me that aren't as much me as they are them or us. I love carrying those people with me, mostly. There's things from friends who've died, and it hurts sometimes. I hope it stays with me, though - the grief, the pain. I don't want it to get easier because I don't want to forget them. I don't think I've actually dealt with anything that happened in the last six years, give or take? And it's all been hitting at once for the past year-ish. So, this is for the friends who are gone or lost to me, and to those who still let me love them.

long biopunk horny
you wake up curled up against your toxscrubber, rubbing the sleep from your eyes as she chitters and nuzzles against your neck. you aren’t really supposed to let the dog-sized creatures sleep in bed with you, but you’ve had your fingers and your tongue inside her way too many times to deny her that at this point. you shouldn’t be doing that either but if she can understand and repair an oxygen filtration system she can definitely consent so whatever. better pussy than any human you’ve ever had too so no complaints here
your “coffee machine” dispenses you a beverage, which definitely isn’t coffee but tastes reasonably like it, from an oddly phallic appendage. you try not to think about it too much
you have to go out to the garden to pick produce to make breakfast. the agridome should be sealed, but it never hurts to be careful. your filtration system skitters up your outstretched arm, hooking its little legs behind your head and spooling the long tendrils that recycle your breath and pull toxins from the air into your throat, and it shudders with a hint of arousal as you give the warm, thick appendages a quick suck. most people have to train their throats to not gag on their filters, but you took naturally to it… for some reason
the plants curl around your hand seductively as you pick the savory fruits off, soft leaves leaning into you and wrapping around your fingers, stroking up and down and wishing you gave them something else to hold…
next is protein. you let yourself into the egglayers’ enclosure and immediately get swarmed by the small feathery quadrupeds, jumping all over you and trying to be seductive in the hopes you have a spare minute. one particularly bold one even lands on your hand, gently biting your wrist and humping your fingers- until your toxscrubber snarls at it. she’s been getting really possessive lately, ever since she figured out what your tongue does
you’re chopping up vegetables for the skillet to pair with eggs, when the knife slips and nails your hand pretty bad. you yelp, and a medibug skitters across the counter from her terrarium. medibugs are fantastic, and you lay your hand, about her same size, on the counter for her to fix. one quick sting and the local anesthetic in her venom hits immediately, and she goes to work carefully stitching up your hand with a fiber the same thickness as spider silk and twice as strong, before weaving a special sticky patch to glue over it until you’re healed. as thanks, she climbs your arm and perches on your face, and you stroke her carapace as her ovipositor brushes your lips
your toxscrubber paws at you. her scales are turning orange - you need to change the filter in your air supply, but that can wait a few more minutes. your breakfast is almost ready, and she’s nosing eagerly at your crotch and trying to undo the zipper with her fangs
