Question for Fellow Autistics
So, I have a really limited food pallet, textures, smells and flavours are all factors into whether or not I'll eat something.
Anyway, my friend (who has never been around for food time and thus has no way of knowing what I'll eat) and I were talking and food came up. She, off the top of her head, managed to name everything I'll eat. I was baffled and amazed. I asked her how she did it and she told me that her brother, who is also autistic, has the exact same food pallet.
This got me to wondering, is it just common for food pallets to look like this or is it just chance he and I have the same food list.
So, my question to you wonderful people is: What foods do you eat? What are your safe foods? Are you able to try/eat anything or are you super picky about what you eat?
My foods are:
Ramen noodles (soy sauce flavour only)
Pizza lunchables
Pizza rolls
Lettuce
Baby carrots
Chips and French onion dip
Tiny pretzels (only sometimes)
Homemade Jammy Dodgers
Tea
Diet Pepsi
Orange juice
Homemade Medianoches
And that's pretty much it, aside from random little things that I may eat once in a while, or things that I have to be having a REALLY good sensory day to stand.
I hope y'all reply because I'm really curious.
Have a wonderful day/night/anytime, and remember all of you are fantastic!

[four gifs of the characters Chara, a small stimming human, sans, a small fat smiling skeleton, Frisk, a small winking human, and Papyrus, a tall slim skeleton chatting loudly. they are are dressed in all red outfits.
upside of each of them is written the tag Go Red Instead. downside of each of them is written the tag actually autistic. both phrases are in big white or white letters. the humans have them white, on a red background, and the skeleton monsters have them red, on a white background. on each of their left is written “support autistic people” followed on their right right by different examples of autistic people who exist, and in frisk’s piece, examples of how to support them.
each of their individual posts, with written retranscription, are available to consult in bold links just below. please do mind each of their individual triggers, and the r slur will be censored such as  variations of “r.t.rd” in each.]

this is april month, autistic people awareness’ month, so i’m here to teach anyone who’d listen a bit about smtg from autistic people.
#(Go)ReadInstead is a movement of the autistic community against autism speaks’ “light it blue” movement. autism speaks promotes the idea that autistic people are sick, compare us to cancer patients, and “light it up blue” to “raise awareness about the Bad Autism we must seek and destroy out of our children”. it is a logic of abuse apologism and ableist conceptions of a neurodivergency that is no illness and neither lethal nor dangerous to anyone, caused by old myths and outdated fears of demons and faeries/changelins.
do not just support the autistic people that fit are likeable to you, do not think of us for the comfort of your allistic narratives. value us all, respect us all and support us all.
Thanks you for your attention- Uidelsib E.N.
i invite you to course through my #actuallyautistic tag on my main, elitigre, for more insight on many things autistic.
my askbox on said blog is also open for you to ask some things on being autistic. do keep in mind i’d be answering on my free time, not as a job.
the character Chara, sans, Frisk and Paryrus, from the video game Undertale (2015), belong to Toby Fox.
this post is not invitation for debate on the autistic spectrum being an illness, harmful, or how Actually Autism Speaks Is Good And ABA Saves Lives.

As a British autistic person can I say that the autism speaks organisation is not as powerful as it thinks and you don't need to go red or ban blue and the puzzle piece to condemn them, we light up blue in England and it's not because of autism speaks. I just want to say this because I know many people including myself feel conflicted due to the goredinstead hashtag because we hate autism speaks but can't give up our blue puzzle piece x
Note: We usually do not take questions like this, but this was so infuriating to us that we had to answer it. The next time we get asks like this, we will delete on sight and will almost certainly start blocking.
Let me be very clear: the fact that you and “many other” British autistic people are okay with the puzzle piece symbolism DOES NOT MEAN that the puzzle piece is any less a symbol of hatred. A$ was started in the United States, NOT in Britain. They chose blue to erase the experiences of autistic women, girls, and trans/non-binary people. They chose the puzzle piece to symbolize that autistic people have something missing and need to be made whole, as well as the idea that autism needs to be “solved,” which is a nice way of saying “cured,” which is a nice way of saying “eradicated,” which is a nice way of saying “eugenics.” It should come as no surprise to you that the Wright family, who founded A$, are supporters of Donald Trump and the alt-right.
As such, the blue puzzle piece IS A HATE SYMBOL. There’s no way around that. Yes, some people besides Autism Speaks use it without malicious intent because they don’t know better, but that does not take away the fact that the blue puzzle piece IS A HATE SYMBOL.
Learn your history.
Also, your URL is super appropriate because I’m “lost and bewildered” as to why on earth you thought that this blog of all places was the right place to bring any of this up.
-Mod Lia
————————————————Mod Rowlf here to add on to what Mod Lia’s already said.
Okay. I started this damn blog and I’m British. I don’t know of any other British autistic or aspie people who are okay with the puzzle piece And I live out in the sticks. We do have our own branch of Autism Speaks and it’s called Autistica. Right now they’re trying to claim a link between autism and anorexia-that if you’re autistic, you’re going to be anorexic too. As a fat autistic, to them I say ‘lol no’.
Also, if you’re British, then you’ll know the history behind the puzzle piece. Now the puzzle piece was originally used by the British National Autistic Society way, way back in the 1960s because Autism was this puzzling condition that needed to be figured out. It also wasn’t blue. It was, green, I think. Idk I’m not going to look it up now. But anyway, they changed it (in fact, they’ve changed their logo a few times) and their logo is now people hugging.
Autism Speaks appropriated the puzzle piece and used it to spread their message that autistic kids were missing and they needed to find the missing piece and they were the ones who turned it blue because it affects boys more than girls, in effect turning it into a symbol of hate.
Yeah, that’s also why Light It Up Blue is… exactly that. You can’t get rid of Light It Up Blue because it’s just… it’s linked to Autism Speaks in a way that the puzzle piece and light bulbs never used to be. It is their campaign. Much like how autistic people cannot be separated from their autism, Light It Up Blue cannot be separated from Autism Speaks.
Therefore, if you Light it Up Blue, you’re supporting Autism Speaks. So that’s automatic block material right there. I don’t even care if I’m breaking my own rule here, but… fuck you. This past Autism Acceptance Day, many places around the UK (mostly England) actually went gold for autism acceptance rather than blue for autism awareness because slowly, they’re getting our message. This includes several cities and even the London Underground. Just because you don’t see A$ here (they are) doesn’t mean their message isn’t here (it is). It’s a worldwide thing. They spend, I think 40% on advertising? I don’t know, it’s a number close to that. And that’s not just America, but around the world. 1.6%, in contrast, goes to ‘helping’ autistic people. Probably kids. Little boys. White little boys.
They may be an American company, but just like Disney or Kraft or Build A Bear, they’re seen, and their influence is seen, worldwide. They are everywhere. They are insidious. Also, I know you’ve said this to other Autism blogs and bloggers. We aren’t going to change our minds because one little Tumblr troll tells us to. So just… stop, yeah?

Guess what? I told myself I would draw something for Autism Acceptance Month and kept procrastinating and telling myself "Don't worry I got the entirety of April to do it so I don't have to do it rn," and now it's the end of April and I still hadn't done anything for Autism Acceptance Month so I had to immediately start on these drawings or I would have to wait for next April to participate and I can't wait that long.
It's also gonna be May
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Originally was gonna draw the whole main cast wearing red in support but that would take too long and I don't got the time. So I decided to draw the characters that I headcanon(or, in the the case of Ja'maal, are) as autistic. Al's drawing might be weird but like it's supposed to represent autistic people who mask(is that how you phrase it?). Also Idk how to draw people chewing. I decided to draw them all stimming so that something would be happening in the drawing. I decided to change some of the colors to red and gold cause those are the colors for this month(I could be wrong on the gold being apart of the colors but I know for a fact red is. I mean the hashtag is literally GoRedInstead). I didn't have to change Al's cause here already got red as his main(and I would say his only) color. Ja'maal I had to change the silver stuff to gold but that's it. I didn't change the pink on her cause pink is just a light red so it's staying. I changed her sleeves a dark red, the green gem I turned red, and I colored the silver parts of her necklace to gold as well. The drawing I'm most proud of is Ja'maal. They just look very at peace. But like I like how these all turned out so ye.

So, it's almost April and (unfortunately) the light up blue campaign by autism speaks will be coming up. Autism speaks is a hateful, hurtful organization, I'll add some links below . There are other organizations who are actually good, like the autism self advocacy group.
Listen to autistics about autism, unless you've lived it you don't really know what autism is like. We aren't broken, we aren't less, we aren't messed up, we are humans. We don't deserve to be treated as any less.
The Autistic supported alternative is go red instead, and as a way to combat the hurtful stigma and stereotypes that resurface this time of year I'm going to be trying to post fics with autistic characters and doing art. If you have something specific you'd like to see (preferably a fandom I know, but ill see what I can do anyway) whether it is a head canon or canon send in your requests. I'm going to try and do as much as I can.
So please send in requests for fics, art and comics, I'll see what I can Do! And if you know or have written any good fics with autistic characters or autistic reader, please send me a link, I would LOVE to check them out, there are never enough out there!
Remember all of you are fantastic and I just wanted you know!

this post features talk of abuse, ableism, pathologization, forced medication and dehumanization. please do skip it if this might put your mental health at risk. the r slur will be spelled as such “r.t.rd”.
spoilers for the Undertale game have to be looked out for too.
[three images of the video game Undertale’s character Papyrus, one being a gif, and the two others being the same images, but transparent and composing the gif. Papyrus wears an all-red outfit, his signature scarf tied around his waist, and is walking carrying groceries and a MTT purse, phone in hand. He also wears gloves, for tactile sensitivity reasons. He is talking, loudly, to Frisk, who he is helping with calculus, breaking the thales’ and pythagore’s theorems down for easy comprehension. He is smiling brightly and laughing in a abashed fashion, happy to help his friend and touched by their praise for his good maths skills.
upside of him is written the tag Go Red Instead. downside him is written the tag actually autistic. both are in big red letters. on his left is written “support autistic people” followed on his right by the following:
“who does not fit your conception of maturity and intelligence"
“who are loud, extravagant, passionate, with redundant interests, energetic”
“who are kind and extrovert enough to appear naive”
“who always seem happy”
the two sets of phrases are framed within upside-down red-lined hearts.]
this is april month, autistic people awareness’ month, so i’m here to teach anyone who’d listen a bit about smtg from autistic people.
#(Go)ReadInstead is a movement of the autistic community against autism speaks’ “light it blue” movement. autism speaks promotes the idea that autistic people are sick, compare us to cancer patients, and “light it up blue” to “raise awareness about the Bad Autism we must seek and destroy out of our children”. it is a logic of abuse apologism and ableist conceptions of a neurodivergency that is no illness, and neither lethal nor dangerous to anyone, caused by old myths and outdated fears of demons and faeries/changelins.
Papyrus is a character who is very obviously autistic coded to autistic people, like me, for example. he is loud, moves a lot, has special interests in spaghetti cooking and puzzles, doesn’t like upsetting textures like greasy foods, has a particular speech pattern and social cues, who he does not always read right, and stem from him seeking outright, blatant validation. he is also of seemingly short temper, quick to get worked up, but always nice and considerate.
i personally find him very endearing and comforting, him being such a good person with an optimistic view on life, despite his shortcomings and loneliness, on top of being trapped underground, in a setting we know canonically causes monsters to lose HoPe, their will to live.
now, a lot of people, allistic (non-autistic) almost exclusively, who played the game, found him to be aggravating, childish, stupid, guillible and more of a laughstock than an actual character. he is often brushed aside for the sake of other characters.
this reveals a stigma against autistic people. because, while he is not canonically autistic, papyrus acts like us. we know to recognize that; and we know to recognize the hostility against him as something we have to deal with often in our real lives, both outside in the world and online.
we are said to be idiotic, self-centered, “5 years olds in adults’ bodies”, reduced to one single emotion, either mindless happiness or animalistic anger, most of the time, a myriad of descriptives made to challenge our integrity as persons able of autonomy.
we are said to be oblivious, unable of judging good from bad, of not knowing what is good for us. that serves a very dangerous narrative that silences us, and  cuts our community into two parts, arbitrarily following allistic people’s judgement: “low-functionning” autistic people, that allistics would judge papyrus to be, and “high-functionning” autistic people, told to be geniuses, like moffat’s series’ Sherlock’s eponymic character have been theorized to be, because he is a genius, and a very disagreeable person because he is autistic. which actually very disagreeable benedict cumberbatch, his interpretator, debunked by a “let us not feed in their [us autistic people] desillusions they can be of great mind” logic.
both of those cases people shove us in without our consent harms us. it rids the first from their own agency, and the second of having a say on our autistic struggles, since we are “of so high potential, capacities not comparable to those lowly r*t*rds.” this sorting out is dehumanizing, to both imaginary party.
it is important we are all acknowledged as people, with our own individual and group-patterned struggles, regardless of how we perform in our own preferred fields, and of which fields allistics value over others; like it is better-seen to be fluent at arithmetics than arts, for example, no matter the skills developped in arts by the person.
do not just support the autistic people that fit your view of a good one, of a great mind, jaded and porn-inspo for your allistic needs. value us all, respect us all and support us all.
Thanks you for your attention- Uidelsib E.N.

Flowey is on his pink-reddish computer browsing internet resources. there is a gay flag sticker on his computer’s logo. he also has various reactions, an ‘owo what’s this’ one, a surprised one, contemplative ones, a sceptical one, and an angry one, when the computer brings up the puzzle piece symbol.
upside of him is written the tag Go Red Instead. downside him is written the tag actually autistic. both are in big red letters. on his left is written “support autistic people” followed by “by learning about us ! especially if you hate us ! don’t hate stuff you don’t know, jerk !!”, then on his right by the following:

the character Flowey is a jerk. he is a liar, manipulative, plays with people’s lives and laughs at the player’s/Frisk’s misery in the game. he is, by all means, an antagonist, and a bully. he is also, canonically, able of doing good. of learning. trying to get better. he is not inherently mean, but was because it was easier for him. he is as such the best representation of ableist allistics i can think of in the game, and thus i illustrate my point with him.
i already made a post about good allistic allyship in general with Frisk’s. it also has links to organizations to donate to. Toriel’s informs of good allistic parenting, and Grillby’s, of good allistic friendship and romantic/sexual relationship doing.

the character Toriel is not hinted at, coded, or canonically autistic. she is, though, canonically the mother of Chara, a character who i interpret as being autistic. Toriel is far from being the perfect mother, in fact she made huge mistakes that failed her child. however, she is able of wisdom and humility, and i believe that given the chance, she would learn to be an excellent parent to an autistic child, even with their trauma on top of that. that’s why i deem it best to illustrate my point with this caring goat monster.
i don’t know much about good parenting from a carer’s point of view, i’ll admit, because of personal trauma. i do have insights from the child’s position. but first, i’ll quote an helpful fellow, who i will be calling C :
“from experience, I can tell you that the worst thing you can do for you autistic children is to prioritize managing their behavior over raising them in an open minded and loving environment that addresses their needs.
like if you have a kid that moves around a lot to stim and you pull the "quiet hands" bullshit to try to get them to sit down instead of giving them other opportunities to let out energy and teaching them to manage their own movements, for example.
bad parents, they don't care about their kids, they only care about garnering sympathy for themselves because "OH IT'S SO HARD BEING THE PARENT OF A DIFFICULT CHILD”.
well that's some stuff about bad parents but a good parent of an autistic child, or any child for that matter, would be able to not only address their child's needs but also would care enough to make adjustments to themselves and the way they approach a child care if this is something they're totally new to.
though in this day and age, even parents who don't have any autistic family members don't have any right to not know autistic kids and people exist.
basically look at Autism Speaks and do NOTHING that they do.
support groups that only deal with supporting relatives of people with autism and not communicating with autistic people themselves are bad news.
stay far away from any counseling or pediatric resources that treat children showing traits typical of autism as showing "symptoms" or try to determine of kids are "at risk".
you can either help them grow into an environment where they're allowed to achieve their potential for independence and happiness.
or you can suppress them into submission and condition them to not be an inconvenience to you, which is unfortunately what a lot of parents try to do, whether out of malice or ignorance.”
i don’t have much to add, to be honest. i asked for advice and they made a point by point explanation that just did the whole job.
the keyword is also ACCEPTING. not just tolerating. no, fullout, entire acceptance. and never trying to “cure” your kid. because they’re okay, in that aspect. sure, they’ll have a difficult life in a world that doesn’t want to acknowledge them, but by trying to suppress their very nature, you’d just be playing by this world’s rules. that makes you an executioner, simply put, not a saviour or a protector.
reject all movements linked to autism moms. you are no mom or dad or pam of autism. you’re an allistic parent of an autistic child. you do not have a special parent status. you have allistic privilege over your child. use it wisely.
or you’ll get a child like me: actually unable to function properly due to traumatic pushes for me to be all-time allistic passing, an indigo child, having learned self-destructive behaviours to take out the frustration on myself, an extremely bad self-esteem, and anger issues, and a fear and hatred of authority without explanations, and ultimately, a broken adult who loathes their parents more than anyone else in the fucking universe, and disowned them.
you don’t want that. and the only alternative to my outcome of anger because of allistic abusive parenting is a scared, hiding child, who is bound to be a dead child, by suicide, exhaustion or murdered for not being good enough.

[four gifs of the characters Flowey, a web surfer talking buttercup flower, Frisk, a small winking human, Toriel, a tall big mom roasting autism speaks’ symbol, and Grillby, potentially roasting you in sign language. they are are dressed in all red outfits, safe for the flower, whose gay-customized laptop is pink-redish.
upside of each of them is written the tag Go Red Instead. downside of each of them is written the tag actually autistic. both phrases are in big white or white letters. the human has them white, on a red background, and the flower, goat and flame monsters have them red, on a white background. on each of their left is written “support autistic people” followed on their right right by different examples of how to support them.
each of their individual posts , with written retranscription, are available to consult in bold links just below. please do mind each of their individual triggers, and the r slur will be censored such as  variations of “r.t.rd” in each.]

this post features talk of  nsfw matters, abuse, ableism, and dehumanization. please do skip it if this might put your mental health at risk. the r slur will be spelled as such “r.t.rd”.
spoilers for the Undertale game have to be looked out for too.
links will be in bold.
[six images of the video game Undertale’s character Grillby, one being a gif, and the five others being the same images, but transparent and composing the gif. Grillby wears an all-red toned outfit, dress shirt and red trousers with (fake) leather shoes. he is signing “don’t” “be” “b”, which obviously spells for “don’t be a bad person” ... okay alright it means “don’t be a bitch”. his flames are also twirling on his head, and his movements are swift, wanting to get the point across.
upside of him is written the tag Go Red Instead. downside him is written the tag actually autistic. both are in big red letters. on his left is written “support autistic people” followed by “by being a good allistic partner or friend”, and then to his right by  the following:
“by treating them as your equal WHILE ALSO taking their personal needs in account.”
“by NOT making jokes about the r slur or autism unless they explicitely expressed they’re okay with it.”
“by not questioning their neurodivergency for any reason.”
“by reassuring your child that their worth is not defined by how ‘normal’ they appear to their peers.”
“by treating them like, uh, people.”
“by asking them how they function.”
“by letting them stim even if it’s socially frowned upon.”
“by trying to express yourself as clearly as possible.”
“by caring about their special interests a little at least.”
“by correcting people who congratulate you for ‘putting up with...’.”
“by just doing what you’d do with anyone : care about their boundaries, listen to their troubles and joys, express your own just as much, adjust to certain degree if it’s necessary. COMMUNICATE.”
“learning Sign Languages & alternative means of talking help !”
the phrases are all preceded by upside-down red-lined hearts.]

the character Grillby is selectively mute in canon, from what we see. he doesn’t have much characterization, but i interpret him as a friend of the main cast, and a partner to sans. because i can. and so he fits my point here, and actually illustrates it very keenly.
there isn’t much to say about being the friend or partner of an autistic person. the basic of human decency applies, and i explained in Frisk’s and Toriel’s posts what would be correct allistic allyship and parenting.
i think what matters is to keep in mind the other person has its own traits, but that they aren’t different to a point they are unrelatable because they are autistic. we autistic people are just as able to be friendly and loving as anybody else. it’s simply that we have often been brought up in abusive or disabling conditions that hurt us enough to discourage us from being social.
and then, there are also the issues of us being likely to be overstimulated, in which case we stim, or go silent. either behaviour can be... unfit to social settings for most. it would be good to be able to staying above that kind of petty reasoning. if you enjoy the company of an autistic person in their moments of alli-passing, you should also enjoy it when we act autistic, because we are that all the time. and wanting to look cool more than accepting our traits is pathetic and really revelant of a fake persona of niceness, put on to attract popularity rather than wishing to genuinely bond with people.
that said, it’s understandable you might not want to deal with someone’s antics. and that’s where i separate being a friend from a partner for a quick moment.
it’s normal for a friend to not be able, for your own mental health and privacy, to not be here at all time for someone, like when they have a meltdown, for example. you are not their carer, unless you had a mutual agreement you would try, in which case it’s up to you to go against that, and deal with the consequences on your friendship that would provoke.
for a lover, now, assuming you’re not a one-night stand, you are supposed to support your partner, even if it isn’t easy, and has to be two-sided. stifling, or attempting to, your partner’s autistic behaviours is not fucking okay. and yes we are not always all gooey and soft, but neither are you, trust me. and if you are embarrassed of someone flapping their hands, or having a moment of echolalia (when we repeat sounds/words), because you think that makes us look stupid... you don’t belong with a person like that. and you can leave. but staying with someone knowingly and getting upset with them for being themselves is, i shouldn’t need to say it, abusive. because that means you want to pick what suits you in a person like you would a rosbeef piece. don’t.
that brings us to nsfw matters, more exactly... the myth we are not able of any sexual act is gross and meant to infantilizes us. we are completely able of having a libido and if we don’t chances are it’s not because of autism, trauma is often the reason. i’m not going to say a lot on this because it’s up to each what our no-no’s and likes lie, but we are not children in adult’s bodies, we can consent and refuse to, we are maybe likely to have sensitivity you wouldn’t think of, but other than that... yeah we’re like you. and so, yes, if you do anything to us without asking first and getting an explicit “yes”, that is still rape. because we are able of decisions. and our consent or refusal is still valid and to be listened to even if it isn’t vocal. i mean, surely an allistic person can read body language.
adding on, yes asexual autistic people exist, yes we still have agency and libido, maybe, no we aren’t desexualizing our allo folks, no we aren’t mad at asexual allistics for... stealing whatever they’re accused of stealing. frankly, we’re cool.
now, a word about your part of the deal as a friend/partner. saying we are equal also means you have your own person to care about. which means that if an autistic person dubs you their carer by themselves, you’re allowed to reject them. and if they have a very aggressive and well-put behaviours, or words, to you, no that isn’t a meltdown. a meltdown translates in a lot of our being stopping functionning regularly to instead focus “survivor mode” on getting physical stress out, in cries, tears, maybe self-destructive acts, possibly anger and insults, but not into threats, hitting people, blackmailing or guilt-tripping.
as we are people and your equal, we are also to be held accountable for our bad behaviours, and we are able of being abusive as much as the next person, because abuse is a choice, not a characteristic of any demography in particular.
i trust you to not twist that into painting us as manipulative little victimizers, thanks you.
and if things really don’t work out, you’re always free to leave. don’t take it out on us for our neurodivergency, don’t call us whiny, lazy, childish. if you’re the bigger person, leave without a commotion.
and of course don’t use us as your token of “Good Alli Ally”. and don’t make private jokes about our struggles without us. inviting you to know our private struggles and laugh about them. no, having a highschool friend who’s autistic doesn’t mean you can use the r slur. don’t do that.
though i hope your relationships with autistic people are cool and good. the more the merrier. we’re not from different planets.
do not just support the autistic people that are entertaining and relatable enough to you, do not think of us to make good apparence of your allistic narratives. value us all, respect us all and support us all.

this post features in-details talk of abuse, self-harm, self-hatred and  suicide of a child due to internalized ableism, on top of themes of genocide, death and fetishization. please do skip it if this might put your mental health at risk. the r slur will be spelled as such “r.t.rd”.

[three images of the video game Undertale’s character Chara, one being a gif, and the two others being the same images, but with Chara semi-transparent (to resemble a ghost) and composing the gif. the background is completely red. chara wears an all-red outfit, a striped dress, with hand mittens red like their soul trait DeTermination. they wear a necklace whose pendant is the infinity symbol of the autistic spectrum. they are grinning and smiling very excitedly, stimming by flapping their hands and waving their arms in large movements, and pawing at the ground in bliss. their head is also bobbing up and down, their hair following. they are also crying, but in joy, and are red-faced. on their arms and legs and neck can be seen scars, self-inflicted in past episodes of meltdowns and breakdowns.
upside of them is written the tag Go Red Instead. downside them is written the tag actually autistic. both are in big white letters. on their left is written “support autistic people” followed on their right by the following:
“who self-harm, are ashamed, hide, think they’re demons”
“who were abused, (a)shamed”
“who have personality disorders”
“who hate themselves”
“to dare open up, stim, talk, and appreciate their uniqueness”
the two sets of phrases are framed within white-lined hearts.]
this is april month, autistic people awareness’ month, so i’m here to teach anyone who’d listen a bit about smtg from autistic people.
#(Go)ReadInstead is a movement of the autistic community against autism speaks’ “light it blue” movement. autism speaks promotes the idea that autistic people are sick, compare us to cancer patients, and “light it up blue” to “raise awareness about the Bad Autism we must seek and destroy out of our children”. it is a logic of abuse apologism and ableist conceptions of a neurodivergency that is no illness and neither lethal nor dangerous to anyone, caused by old myths and outdated fears of demons and faeries/changelins.
the character Chara canonically commits suicide in a extremely painful and sad context. seen as brought upon them by their own choice of actions and implied hatred for humanity, in a plan to also bring down the people of their hometown down with them. we never hear them say they hate humans, but their brother tells us so. we do know they consider themselves as a demon, as they present themselves to us as such. it is hinted that Chara came to the Underground, the place they seal their fate in, because they fled from something, and fell, possibly accidentally, possible in an attempt to take their life. a pattern can be picked on with those elements, that would indicate a past of abuse at the hands of humans, abuse that would lead a child to make themselves a martyr willingly, and think they are a demon. now, this is just an interpretation, but many autistic people i know can relate to this and see how Chara is autistic, was abused for it, and destroyed themselves over it, because of it.
other more positive hints of them being autistic would be their extensive knowledge on monsterkind, their cold but good-natured sarcasm, their dislike of some social interactions, their awkwardness in some settings, their erudition, their admiration for heroism, and their focus on important issues, which we discover as we follow their narrating during the game.
on an important note, i do not believe at all in the interpretation of Chara being an abuser or a murderer, much less in a genocide. i think of that reading is in fact disgusting, ableist and ridiculous, to paint a child who suffered implied abuse, that took their own life by heinous poisoning and makes jokes about snowpoffs and dogs being pet, as a sadistic genocider, all because they are presented as smiling and seemingly broken and screaming over the player mass murdering their people in the bad end of the game. especially when we, the player, are never invited to attack by them.
that aside, i see their behaviours as indicative of a lot of self-restraint, loathing of self, and mental health problems. i already covered the subject of mental illness and being autistic here. i want to then talk of the darker consequences of shame of being autistic.
they are seen a lot as smiling over bad things. only, while there is an ableist trope, especially against people dealing with schizoid personality disorders, of that kind of paradoxal behaviour, laughter is known as a very common coping reaction of the brain in the face of painful, confusing, distressing situations. the mind attempts to make the situation as dismissal this way. and it is also known for abuse survivors to smile a lot, unnaturally so, to appear pleasant, and avoid as much mistreatment as possible from the people they please. this further mental disorders like ptsd, as the brain registers the act of smiling as something forced, stressful. and we also know depressed people smile a lot to hide their misery from judgement and pity.
autistic people also smile a lot of unsincere reason, but not out of bad intentions, just like the people cited above. we do because we are told to be pleasant, because people believe we are unable of love. and so we smile, to not appear threatening, weird, animalistic, or stupid. of course, that can backfire.
and we are also likely to develop disorders because of abuse, as explained in the link above. and that can worsen our behaviours, making us stressed on top of us having a different sensitivity.
on this, add the pressure of being of another marginalized identity, such as being a girl, or black, or muslim, or trans (or all of those at once), who are four demographics whose mental struggles are commonly overlooked in favor of furthering the stereotypes of “delusional stupidity” each is linked to.
and consider the impact this has on our lives and self-esteem.
and thus, accept some of us are covered in bruises, scars, dirt and sweat, mute, disabled from stress killing our brain or limb cells (which does happen, literally), that we are likely to yell, cry, that we have what is called, when caused by specifically autistic sensitivities, a breakdown, or when by mental illnesses like schizophrenia or bordeline personality disorders, breakdowns, burn-outs.
we are not attention-seeking, nor throwing tanthrums. in fact, most of us would prefer being left to our own devices and safe personal spaces. but we cannot always help the consequences that stigma, slurs, physical and emotional abuse, have on our psyche. in fact, one does not control a meltdown, and it’s very tiring and straining on the body, leaving it cramped and dehydrated. same can be said about a breakdown.
some children, like i did, grind their teeth till they pull a neck muscly, bite themselves, bang their head on solid surfaces, to exteriorize distressing energy, or to punish themselves for being “bad”. others clamp, claw, cuts at their skin, hair. others, again, go into complete dissociation and mutism, isolation in order to fort ourselves, and react violently to intrusions of this chrysalis state. and some of us, i did, keep up those self-harming behaviours in adulthood, because of stress and a lack of support in recovery.
some of us, i did, develop personality disorders. bpd, in my case. you can imagine how the legend of being a r.t.rded sympathy-empty demon child mixed with something painted as inherently abusive and manipulative works our for me. not too good if people know. okayish if i first prove i am still able of humanity and smartness. pretty well, if i hide parts from the very people that are treating me. because many would deny that you can be autistic, clever, mentally ill with serious issues, and  aware of it all at once.
so yes. a lot of us are of the annoying, nonattractive “ugly” kind, damaged, tainted, broken, whichever you prefer. but you see, all of those descriptives imply that we are by someone, and that is not us, so someone else, because we do not actually bring any of that on ourselves.
a personal metaphor i use to describe myself is of a pot, made of clay instead of ceramic, being put to ovens, as pots are conceived usually, but at the same temperature as ceramic ones are, which is not appropriate at all and cause for the clay pot to crack. obviously a clay pot is no less a pot than a ceramic one, is also made of dirt, even if the first seems prettier, and is actually sturdier and more likely to last in time, but also to shatter given a certain shock the clay one would not mind. so both have their distinct and common qualities. and the clay pot is damaged not because it is clay in itself, or because of the ceramic pots, but because a fool decided it wise to treat it like they would treat a ceramic one.*
and so we are hurt.
and so we need help. which you can understand is hard to get when we appear to be “too bad off”.
do understand that we are not to be forced to be fixed, we are in fact in such ways because that occured already.
and that is unfair. and cannot be changed at the flick of fingers. but a bit of understanding and compassion, always help. we do not ask for much. i’m even the only one asking anything here, and this is my most vindicative piece out of this project so far. just learn about us. don’t make us your “psycho killers” in movies and “mercifully put down inadequate children by parents” newspapers’  sideline articles.
consider us humans, and diverse, regardless of how rawly so we are.
do not just support the autistic people that fit your view of a healthy one, of a clean, “civilized” (according to your definitions) person. value us all, respect us all and support us all.

upside of him is written the tag Go Red Instead. downside him is written the tag actually autistic. both are in big red letters. on his left is written “support autistic people” followed on his right by “with mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, c-ptsd…”. the two phrases are framed within upside-down red-lined hearts.]
this is april month, autistic people awareness’ month, so i’m here to teach anyone who’d listen a bit about smtg from autistic people.
#(Go)ReadInstead is a movement of the autistic community against autism speaks’ “light it blue” movement. autism speaks promotes the idea that autistic people are sick, compare us to cancer patients, and “light it up blue” to “raise awareness about the Bad Autism we must seek and destroy out of our children”. it is a logic of abuse apologism and ableist conceptions of a neurodivergency that is no illness and neither lethal nor dangerous to anyone, caused by old myths and outdated fears of demons and faeries/changelins.
the character sans does not have a lot of fanmade autistic recognition, and is not canonically so, but he resonates with my experience of being a mentally ill autistic person, hence why i chose him to illustrate my point here. he also has the character Papyrus for a sibling, who is much more autistic coded, something that reinforces my opinion on sans being so too.
the pathologizing stigma harms actually mentally ill autistic people, who get our symptoms dismissed aswe are dehumanized and considered “r*t*rds”, thus not really worth of attention, and judged too “intellectually challenged” to develop any complex, serious disorders.
mental illnesses are especially likely to develop in our minds as we are more likely than allistic (non-autistic) people to be abused for our failures in school, during social interactions, and effecting chores.
it is also said we are born to be suffering because we are unfit as human beings in this world. that our suffering is necessary for us to do good. especially with “high-functionning” autistic people.
there are also cases of autistic people who get their autism blamed for their mental illnesses, which also hurts us, because instead of focusing on our actual problems, such as the suicidal thoughts caused by trauma and the other disorders it causes, we are made to “cure” a part of our mind, the way our brains are wired, when attention should be brought on how our brain is damaged. basically, we are then put through extremely painful, tiring, useless “corrective therapy” (ABA, beatings, electrochocs, chemical injections such as morphine, brain surgeries even, sometimes) that only further destroys us.
do not just support the autistic people that fit your view of a good one, of a clever kind, quiet and unnoticeable, do not let us suffer for your allistic narratives. value us all, respect us all and support us all.
Thanks you for your attention- Uidelsib E.N.
