Karate Saturday Part 2
Two weeks ago I was working night shifts, so only got a single Karate session in. This passed week didn't get any training done, but can't complain, lovely time in Italy. So, today, off to Garswood Goju Ryu for the morning session and then up to Blackrod for the afternoon session.
Here's a couple of clips from Kata practice.

What Are the Health Benefits of Karate Classes in Brampton?
Finding ways to maintain your physical and mental well-being is important. Amidst the many options in Brampton, Ontario, one stands out for its holistic approach to health and fitness: karate.
More than just a form of self-defence, karate offers many health benefits that contribute to its practitioners’ overall wellness.
Karate is an unarmed form of martial arts, that originated some 1,400 years ago in East Asia. However, it was structured until the 17th century in the Japanese island of Okinawa by the samurai class. The word ‘karate” comes from the Japanese words ‘kara’ (meaning empty) and ‘te’ (meaning hand). The dojo is the hall in which the master (or sensei) and their students come together to practice.
Let's uncover how karate classes in Brampton can transform your body and mind.

Karate Classes in Brampton: The Positive Mental and Physical Impacts
Here are the ways karate can keep your mind and body healthy:
Physical Fitness
Karate is renowned for its rigorous training regimen. It involves a blend of aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility drills. Various types of karate teach different exercises to enhance physical fitness. Goju-ryu, for example, focuses on flexibility and muscle strength.
From the moment you step onto the dojo floor, you engage in a full-body workout that targets every muscle group. Kicks, punches, blocks, and stances require coordination, balance, and agility. This will improve cardiovascular health, enhance muscular strength, and increase flexibility. Your physical capabilities will reach new heights through repetitive practice and progressive training.
Mental Mastery
Beyond the physical aspect, karate classes in Brampton cultivate mental discipline and fortitude in its students. As you progress through the ranks, you will learn the importance of focus, concentration, and self-control. Each technique demands undivided attention to detail. It will, indeed, foster your mindfulness and sharpen your cognitive abilities. The meditative aspect of karate promotes stress reduction and emotional resilience. It will empower you to navigate life's challenges with calmness. By honing the mind-body connection, you will also gain a sense of inner peace and harmony.
Increased Self-Confidence
Karate is a journey of self-discovery and personal growth in which you will uncover your inner strength and potential. Achieving each milestone will help you develop a sense of self-confidence and empowerment, while mastering techniques will make you believe in your abilities. It will also help foster a positive self-image and a can-do attitude. Moreover, the supportive environment of the dojo cultivates camaraderie and provides a sense of belonging and encouragement. Through karate classes, you will emerge not only physically stronger but mentally more resilient.
Stress Relief and Mental Well-Being
In today's world, stress is an ever-present factor that takes its toll on both our physical and mental health. Traditional karate classes serve as a solution to the pressures of everyday life, offering a therapeutic outlet for stress relief and emotional release. The rhythmic movements (like punches) and focused breathing techniques (like Ibuki breathing or power breathing) promote relaxation and inner calm. As a result, your tension and anxiety will be greatly reduced.
Moreover, the sense of accomplishment derived from mastering new skills will boost your self-esteem and enhance your overall well-being. By immersing yourself in the discipline of karate, you will reclaim balance and tranquillity in your life.
Improved Focus and Concentration
Karate classes provide a structured environment where you can hone your attention skills and mental awareness. The precision required to execute techniques in karate demands heightened awareness and mindfulness. This martial art will sharpen your cognitive abilities in the process.
As you practice karate, you learn to block out distractions and maintain unwavering focus, both inside and outside the dojo. These benefits extend beyond martial arts training and enhance your academic performance, professional productivity, and overall quality of life.
Lifelong Learning and Personal Development
Karate is not merely a skill to be mastered but a lifelong journey of personal development and self-improvement. As you progress through the ranks and get to the final black belt, you will embrace the spirit of continuous learning and growth. Each class presents new challenges and opportunities for refinement, fostering a growth mindset and passion for self-improvement. Moreover, the principles of respect, humility, and perseverance instilled in karate practitioners transcend the confines of the dojo, shaping their character and guiding their interactions with others.
Joining karate classes in Brampton will allow you to improve your overall health and wellness. Whether you seek to enhance your physical strength, cultivate mental discipline, or simply find inner peace, karate provides a pathway to holistic well-being. As you embark on this transformative journey, you'll discover not only the power within yourself but the boundless potential that awaits you.

Martial Arts
The martial arts are battle-tested traditions that have existed for millenia. Their etymological underpinnings are based on them being the Art of Mars, who was the Roman god of war.
The are quite a few forms of self-defense originating in the Far East. These include various forms of Karate such as Bushinryu, Mas Oyama's Kyokushin, Chojun Miyagi's goju-ryu, and Gichin Funakoshi's Shotokan. Gichin Funakoshi is known as the father of modern Karate.
Some other forms of martial arts include the Japanese discipline of Aikido (the "Art of Peace" which was founded by Morihei Ueshiba), Sumo wrestling, Wing Chun Fist (a type of Chinese Gung Fu), and other forms of Kung Fu like White Crane-style, Flying Crane-style, Northern Praying Mantis-style, and Southern Praying Mantis-style.
There also exists the combat systems of Jigoro Kano's Judo (the "Gentle Way"), Bujinkan Ninjutsu, Hwang Kee's Tang Soo Do (the "Way of the Tang Hand" - a reference to China's Tang Dynasty), Taekwondo (the "Art of Punching and Kicking" which later became popularized in the United States by Jhoon Rhee), Hwarang-Do (based upon the practices of Korean warrior-poets), Nunchaku-Do (techniques of Nunchuks), Dojutsu (a subsidiary of Ninjutsu), Kiaijutsu (a style based upon utilizing the vocal chords as weapons), Shurikenjutsu (throwing star techniques), Bujutsu (military arts), and Bojutsu (Bo staff techniques).
Aikido has to do with redirecting energy through joint locks and wrist locks. Aiki is internalized energy whereas Kiai is externalized energy. Wing Chun Fist was designed to defeat an opponent bigger, stronger, and faster than you.
Ninjutsu, the "Silent Way", was pioneered by the disciple of a Chinese warrior-monk during the 12th century. That disciple's name was Daisuke Nishina and his mentor was called Kain Doshi. The Shinobi (Japanese term for ninja) were the wizened mountain elders located in Iga Prefecture. Daisuke Nishina changed his name to Daisuke Togakure after founding the Togakure-ryu, or the "School of the Hidden Door". One of his remote successors was Toda-sensei, who trained Jutaro (later "Toshitsugu Takamatsu" AKA the Mongolian Tiger who mentored Masaaki Hatsumi).

Episode 837 - Do Styles Have Relevance Now
In this episode, co-host Andrew Adams is joined by Victor Guarino and Craig Wharem to talk about whether styles have relevance in martial arts any more. When we talk martial arts, we often go to words like Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, etc. And even within these words, we often break them down into smaller groups like Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Shorin Ryu, etc. At one point these differences really made a difference, but do they now? Listen and hear their thoughts and comment your thoughts below!

Michael Jai White (born November 10, 1967) is an actor, director, and martial artist. He was the first African American to portray a major comic book superhero in a major motion picture, having starred as Al Simmons, the protagonist in Spawn. He appeared as Marcus Williams in Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too?, and starred as the character in For Better or Worse. He portrayed Jax Briggs in Mortal Kombat: Legacy and the Cyborg Seth in Universal Soldier: The Return. He portrayed boxer Mike Tyson in Tyson. He played the title role in Black Dynamite, as well as the animated series of the same name. He is a martial artist in nine different styles: Shōtōkan, Goju-Ryu, Taekwondo, Kobudō, Tang Soo Do, Wushu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kyokushin and boxing, with a specific focus on Kyokushin Karate. He started training in martial arts at the age of four in Jujutsu. He next took up Shōtōkan and moved on to other styles later. He is a former special education teacher and taught students with behavioral problems for three years. He cites his history in education as the reason why, despite his love for the music genre on "a lot of levels", he cannot "in good [conscience]" have a positive opinion on hip hop or "excuse some of [its] pervasive and destructive elements", mainly due to his experience with youngsters who had difficulty seeing the difference between it and real life. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckx5AoELhDD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🔁 @muidokan The concern with changes in karate is old. Several factors can contribute to the dilution and even the loss of valuable old knowledge. So we need to make an active effort to research and preserve the fundamentals of the art, understand its purpose and spread what is not well-known. Small victories, day 1: Today is a start!
Hey there, I am really starting to dig this idea I had about me posting about my little efforts every day and this is the first day I'll actually put something out.
I did some exercise
I'll let you into something: I am quite out of shape physically and I haven't taken my training and diet regimen as seriously as I ought to be. However, it is also true that I have to get back into everything step by step.
So I trained on gymnastic rings and lifted weights today. I'm still new to both, since all I've done previously was bodyweight exercise. To be more specific, I only did ring rows, ring holds and ring bicep curls. As for the bar, I did barbell rows and bicep curls (again).
After that, I took some time for myself and boxed on the heavy bag. I wasn't taking this as seriously as I should've, but to be fair I also was injured so I didn't want to overdo it.
Finally, I practiced Karate after long months of hiatus because since my dojo closed due to the pandemic I haven't really had all the motivation to continue. However, I realized over the months or even years that Karate was for me and nothing else can replace what Karate was and is to me today. This martial art is one thing I can't give up on, because I made a promise to myself to get to black belt and dedicate all my life to it.
On that note, what is Karate for me?
My biggest pride from when I started in 2018 was Karate. I practice Shotokan Karate, but I've also been drawn to be interested into finding other dojos teaching different styles, such as Kyokushin and Goju-Ryu. However, martial arts is very much undervalued here in Italy in my honest opinion, because the main sport here is soccer (or football, for those who actually speak anything other than American English).
Back to the topic, Karate for me means a lot. My sensei made me love the art and having practiced it myself, with my motivation being to become stronger myself both physically and mentally, it helped me through a lot of hardships. For example, I was dealing with a lot of personal problems but I would let everything out during training, either during sparrings or performing Kata.
To this day, I feel like Karate is still part of me and I really wish to get back into training. Alas, not too fast. I will start when everything is settled enough.
What are my intentions for tomorrow?
I also have a job which I won't disclose because I prefer not to. Since my shift is 5 hours today I will pretty much do the work I am required to and then go back home.
The thing is, I love my job. I love the place and my colleagues are the nicest people I'll ever meet. Too bad my time will last until december 31, but that's more than enough time for me to fund my crazy ideas.
And as a bonus measure, I feel like I will prep dinner for tomorrow just so I don't have to buy stuff from KFC or McDonald's.
Conclusions
Sometimes I feel like writing does make me feel alive, because I'm talking about me and only me and not about other people or things. I mean, I focus on myself when I write on this blog and sometimes on the interesting things that happen.
As for today I think I've said enough.
Thanks for reading and see ya around!
