Google Earth caught a $2 billion stealth bomber on candid camera

The 172-foot-wide B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, which costs over $2 billion in today's currency, can slip past enemy air defenses with the radar signature of a small bird, but it can also be spotted on Google Earth if you have an internet connection.

"Can you tell me what you're trying to say?" Another joked, "I don't see anything."

"Looks like a weather balloon to me," a third wrote, referring to the 1947 Army announcement that it had discovered a "flying disc" near Roswell, New Mexico, only to subsequently rescind the statement and explain it was a weather balloon.

It's not unusual to see a B-2 bomber flying over Missouri, unlike a UFO. After all, Whiteman Air Force Outpost, the world's sole B-2 base, is approximately 20 miles south of the location where the plane was photographed flying over on Google Earth.

Nonetheless, the aircraft's flying-wing design, ninja-like ability to penetrate enemy air defenses, and reputation for flying around the world to kill ISIS fighters in the dead of night give it an aura that makes spotting it in daylight with a simple tool like Google Earth or Google Maps a real treat.

In a 2018 piece for The Atlantic regarding a B-2 mission to bomb ISIS terrorists in Libya, William Langewiesche stated, "The B-2 is intended to fly into the maelstrom when Los Angeles is burning and GPS signals have been jammed." "It's designed to take out the world's most sophisticated air defense systems." It has autonomous systems that function independently of any ground- or space-based transmitters, in addition to traditional navigational capabilities."

The Spirit has a bathroom, a microwave, a few coolers for snacks, just enough room for one of the Spirit's two pilots to lie down and take a sleep, and even "very comfy" cockpit chairs, according to Langewiesche.

Despite this, the Atlantic writer questioned the US government's decision to employ the B-2, which costs $44.27 million a year to maintain. It was employed to bomb no more than 100 personnel tented in the desert in a country with no air defenses, making it the most expensive aircraft in the Air Force inventory to maintain.

Langewiesche remarked, "Bombing uneducated gunmen camping up in a non-desert country's is a far cry from mounting an offensive against a modern military enemy." "However, the mission's high cost may have been a draw based on bureaucratic rather than military logic—you may lose money if you don't spend it—or the B-2s may just have needed some work to do."

Whatever the motivation for the B-2's deployment over Libya, concepts like stealth and strategic bombing are resurfacing as the Air Force prepares for a hypothetical conflict with China or Russia. In reality, the Air Force plans to spend an estimated $203 billion on the B-21 Raider, a new flying wing strategic stealth bomber that looks a lot like the B-2 and is intended to replace it.

The Air Force noted on its website about the Raider, "Designed to operate in tomorrow's high-end threat environment, the B-21 will play a crucial role in assuring America's enduring airpower capabilities."

The Air Force is investing so much money in the B-21 because it intends to buy at least 100 bombers. Only 21 B-2s were produced in comparison. One was wrecked in a non-fatal crash in 2008, while another was damaged after rolling off the Whiteman runway in September. Each B-21 is expected to cost around $639 million in 2019 dollars, according to the Air Force.

So perhaps we'll see photographs of B-21s in mid-flight on Google Earth eventually. The photograph of the B-2 may have a red-and-blue blur effect, which eagle-eyed readers may have seen. This is due to the fact that satellite images differ from ordinary photographs, according to NASA. A satellite image is created by combining measurements of the intensity of certain wavelengths of light, both visible and invisible to human eyes, NASA wrote online. While photographs are made "when light is focused and captured on a light-sensitive surface," NASA wrote online that a satellite image is "created by combining measurements of the intensity of certain wavelengths of light, both visible and invisible to human eyes."

Because the most apparent colors can be formed by combining red, green, and blue-scale photos, NASA revealed that satellites combine red, green, and blue-scale images to build a fill-color view of the planet. However, due to their speed, aircraft in flight may muddy the colors, according to Newsweek.

"You can actually view this in 3D if you put on the old 3D glasses with the red and blue lenses." "Try it," one witty poster on the Air Force subreddit suggested.

It simply goes to show that capturing a Spirit is difficult, but anything is possible with a sky full of satellites, an internet connection, and a little luck.

Why the West is the Best

When looking to purchase land in the United States, whether or not you wish to retire on the land, use the property as an investment, or are just looking for cheap dirt to own, the locations of the best states to choose will vary.  If you are looking for cheap land, then the best states to look in according to Google are Tennessee, Arkansas, and West Virginia. Yet, according to land investors, although Google is accurate on a broader scale as to where a person may find a cheap property, the most inexpensive places to purchase raw land are not located within any of these states. The top states to purchase inexpensive raw land can translate to the notion of affordable counties, and not the states themselves to the eyes of investors, and most of these states can be found somewhere out west.

When looking at affordable counties, the top states to purchase raw land include:

Arizona, California, New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas

Arizona-

The most inexpensive location to purchase raw land in the United States is Cochise County, located in the beautiful state of Arizona. When most people think of Arizona, they think of hot and dry desert and cactus. Cochise County does fit this description. Cochise County holds a lot of our nation's history, such as being home to the Cochise Native Americans and the old wild gun-slinging west. This county is filled with beautiful mountains, old ghost towns, and a great climate. Many places in Cochise County, such as Pearce, do not rise much above 90 degrees in the summer, making this area an ideal place to reside.

The second least expensive county to own property in is that of Apache County, located in northern Arizona. When most people think of Arizona, they think of cactus, but this area specializes in Ponderosa Pine trees, Douglas Firs, and Junipers. This region is vast, taking up nearly all of the northern and eastern portion of Arizona, with a wide variety of stunning state parks such as The Petrified Forest National Park and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest which is filled with wildlife and vast lakes.

Navajo County, Apache County's next-door neighbor is also an affordable place to own property. It is home to the city of Holbrook, and Show Low. Some of the Petrified Forest National Park is located within this region and it also offers Monument Valley and Keams Canyon. Also, this is a very large county offering a ton of space and tons of unoccupied lands.

California-

With the city of Los Angeles being so expensive, it might be shocking for people to know that their next-door neighboring county of San Bernardino is affordable! This county is home to the Mojave National Preserve, San Bernardino National Forest, and some of the Joshua Tree National Park, home of the famous Joshua Tree. If for nothing else then it is worth it to own property here to be close to many outdoor recreational activities and visitation to the big city that this area has to offer.

New Mexico-

Luna County offers epic views, tons of exploration areas, and a great climate. It is home to booming towns such as Deming and Sunshine, New Mexico. Deming is home to one of the number one red wines and the biggest winery in the United States at the D.H. Lescombes Winery & Tasting Room. Thus, although Sonoma and Napa counties are still home to some of the best wines in the country, they can move over when competing for desirable property to own land and grow grapes compared to Luna County’s affordability.  

Valencia County, in New Mexico, is home to lush mountain views combined with the heart of the valley. This county is located just south of Albuquerque, it includes the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail, the Cibola National Forest, and the Manzano Wilderness. It is also home to the Facebook Data Center, so if the views and nature don’t amaze you, maybe the job market will.

Colorado-

Costilla county is not only desirable but unusual. It is home to many mountains, including the Rocky Mountain range, but also alligators and aliens. At the Colorado Gators Reptile Park, you can touch a gator. This park was opened in the 1970s and serves as a rescue center for many creatures. The San Luis Valley has also had its share of the otherworldly, as many unidentified flying crafts have been spotted there; and for a better review of spacecraft, just visit the UFO watchtower located within the county.

Texas-

There are three very inexpensive counties located in the large state of Texas, and Hudspeth is one of them. If you enjoy researching or observing ancient styles of agriculture, pictography, and artifacts, then this area may interest you. Hudspeth was home to the Prehistoric Jornada Mogollon people who resided in the Rio Grande floodplain and left behind a ton of evidence of their prior existence here. Also, if you are looking for mountains, fresh air, and isolation, this place will fit those needs.

Brewster County, just like Hudspeth, finds its home in western Texas. Also similar to Hudspeth, this is an area with a lot of lands and a low population of people. This area is home to not only ancient cultures and raider history but holds a portion of the Chihuahuan Desert landscapes.

Lastly, there is Presidio County, one of the larger counties in the huge state of Texas. This county is well known for farmland and this area has been cultivated since 1200 A.D. This area offers scenic drives across the Rio Grande, Big Bend Ranch state park, and Cibolo Creek Ranch area.

With retirement, it should be obvious by earlier mentioned facts that Arizona and New Mexico would be among the very top places to reside. Yet, New Mexico ranks seventh in regards to weather and twentieth for retirees, but also tenth in affordability, which is not bad at all!

When it comes to investing, speaking of New Mexico, not only is the land affordable and the climate more ideal but according to Amy Bell of Investopedia, in her article, The Top 5 States for Retirees to Buy Cheap Property; New Mexico’s economy is on the rise along with the population. As such, although there is no guarantee that land will grow in value, this notion does strengthen the argument that there is a strong chance that it might. Speaking from personal experience as a professional investor and selling land in Luna county since 2018, I have seen a huge increase in the cost of raw land within this county.

Arizona is a great state to look into if you are wishing to invest. Arizona has had a stable economy and a good job market for quite some time. Since Arizona has a ton of land, there are openings to lend that land to many farmers, which could make a great profit. Or, just hold onto it and the value may start to grow!

According to Martinez Ranch Management and Real Estate, other great states to invest in are California and Utah. California is due to the rising costs to reside within the state and paired with its beauty. Utah is not only an affordable place to own property and is sought after for those who are willing to owner-finance land to those who can’t afford to purchase it outright.

Day 31: Budapest/Bratislava

I had a nice little morning, walking around The Jewish Quarter and finding a nice Melbourne owned (I think) coffee shop. In there I did some work and planned some Bratislava details. I have less then 24 hours there, so I wanted to have a somewhat cogent game plan.

After walking around a synagogue, but deciding not to go in with my luggage. So, I made the very poor decision to walk to the bus station over an hour away, assuming I’d see some new parts of the city (as opposed to navigating the subway). I also had plenty of time, compared to my normal travel situations.

I liken it to walking up 12th Ave, or Northern Blvd in Queens. Once I got over the Danube River, it was just a boring, straight walk. It was basically as if I had showered with my clothes on by the time I got there. Quite gross.

What was surprising was how nice the bus station was. I think about Penn Station, or whatever hell hole I’ve gone to in Baltimore, and think how embarrassing American infrastructure can be. This was a random bus/train station on the outskirts of Budapest, and it was pleasant.

The bus was also quite high quality, and cheap. Another win for Europe.

Now in Bratislava, another nice bus station! What the hell! I walked (again, sweating, again) to the AirBnB. It was in a shopping corridor, which was kind of cool. Bratislava definitely feels rougher around the edges than Budapest, and not so hipster-y.

The place I stayed (and many of the buildings) reminded me of the AirBnB I got with Rocco in Rosarito Mexico. Nice-ish, but dated/faded. I felt that way about much Bratislava.

I quickly turned around and headed to the Slovakian National Gallery for some free art. On the way I passed the famous Man at Work statue of a guy looking out of a manhole. It was pretty unique.

The gallery was small, but quite good! I actually enjoyed it a lot. There was some Picasso-esque stuff I really enjoyed in this quiet, creaky space.

After 30 minutes there, I headed to the adjacent cafe. It was a big space with sculptures, awesome lighting, comfy seating, etc. Basically a place with rosé and art will get me every damn time.

From there, I walked to the Danube, saw the UFO Bridge (which is famous, if not controversial for the fact they took down historical sites to build it), and wandered up to Bratislava Castle.

This reminded me of Lisbon a lot, as people lined the hilly cobblestone streets, drinking and conversing in front of bars. I popped in to one for a vodka soda.

She’s a bartender at a place with liquor, and she clearly understood both the terms “vodka” and “soda”. The fact that she couldn’t fathom the idea of combining them absolutely blew my mind. And hers, apparently.

Anywho, I walked up to the castle and took in the experience up there. Certainly didn’t compare to Buda Castle the night before, so perhaps I visited these cities in the wrong order?

It was still humanity-affirming to see all the young couples having drinks and canoodling up there. It’s incredible that even in smaller places, people find each other. Always nice to see.

After the castle, I made my back down the windy streets, popping into a small place tucked to the side. I got the best tasting meal of my trip in a hangar steak with green beans.

From there, I wandered around the Old Town, and eventually found through Google Maps a speakeasy-ish place called Old Fashioned Bar. It was very cool, and Philip the bartender made me 3 really great old fashioneds while we chatted about the vibe, his skills, New York/London, etc.

Those 3 bad boys packed a punch, so it was time to call it a night (at 2am).

Men in Black

The Men in Black are now part of the collective subconscious for both science fact and fiction fans. From the penlight-amnesia-inducing bureaucrats played by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black to the Cadillac-driving Jeopardy host with the future-Minnesota-Governor sidekick of The X-Files, they are surreally familiar partners to alien incursion. The first Man In Black sighting was recently celebrated by the Maury Island Incident Historical Society with “Burning Saucer, LXXI.” The event was held during its Annual 2018 Meeting at the Woodmont Country Club in Des Moines, according to local news source the Waterland Blog.  The event included a “burning of the saucer,” a small replica of the Icarus spaceship from the 1968 science fiction classic Planet of the Apes, set to David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” performed live by Tinkham Road.

The Maury Island UFO sighting over Puget Sound was reported on June 21, 1947, months before the more famous Roswell, New Mexico, incident. The Maury Island Incident Historical Society highlights that and other area sightings from 1947. It caught the attention of J. Edgar Hoover and was the first reported mention of Men in Black.

The Maury Island Incident may be the only case written off as a hoax that led to the death of UFO Investigators who flew up from Hamilton Field in California. Army Air Force Intelligence officers Captain Lee Davidson and First Lieutenant Frank Brown died when their B-25 caught fire and crashed after examining retrieved evidence they classified as ordinary aluminum.

The story first came to light when Ray Palmer, an editor at Amazing Stories, assigned a story about a man named Fred Crisman who claimed to have evidence of a flying saucer to UFO investigator Kenneth Arnold.  Crimson was the shore supervisor for Harold Dahl, who worked as an informal harbor patroller pulling logs from the Puget Sound. Crimson said Dahl saw a doughnut-shaped aircraft dump piles of slag-like material on the beach of Maury Island.

Dahl reported he was on his patrol boat with his son and their dog at about two in the afternoon. They saw six objects floating about 2,000 feet above the boat. The objects were 100 feet in diameter with center holes and portholes, and possibly an observation window. Dahl took pictures with his camera. One ship stayed in position for a few minutes and then dropped thousands of pieces a white, lightweight metal in the bay and on the beach. It then dropped about a ton of dark metal that erupted, burning his son and killing his dog. The boat’s radio did not work after the incident. Dahl skippered it back, dropped his son at the hospital and left the camera with Crisman. Dahl later said his son disappeared and was found waiting tables in Montana with no memory of how he got there.

Crisman developed the prints, which showed air craft, but said the negatives appeared to be damaged as if by radiation exposure. Crisman reported seeing an air craft hovering overhead when he went back the site to verify Dahl’s story.

Separate FBI and Air Force investigators determined the remaining samples were slag from a metal smelter, concluding Dahl and Crisman faked the incident for publicity. The FBI said the government wouldn’t prosecute Dahl and Crisman for a hoax that caused two deaths if they made no further statements. At first they recanted but Crisman told Fate magazine, in the January 1950 issue, the incident did indeed occur. Maury Island was included in Kenneth Arnold’s 1952 book The Coming of the Saucers.

Dahl told investigators a man wearing a black suit visited him the next morning, and said let’s do breakfast. Dahl followed man’s new black Buick with his own car. While they ate at a restaurant, the man detailed what happened during the incident without being asked, and vaguely threatened Dahl and his family if he told anyone. “I know a great deal more about this experience of yours than you will want to believe,” Dahl reported the man said.

The Men in Black, sometimes called the “silencers,” are individuals dressed completely in black wearing matching black hats and trench coats who show up after UFO sightings. These strangters warn about spreading the story and sometimes threaten people.

According to witness accounts, Men in Black or MIBs usually arrive in expensive cars, like black Cadillacs, with unrecognizable insignia on the sides and untraceable license plates. The interiors of the cars reportedly emit a purple or greenish glow.

A woman told her boss how large and blue the eyes were, and said they may have been hypnotic. On several separate occasions, it appeared the Men in Black walked awkwardly or had somehow odd appearances. One group of MIBs reportedly walked as if they were arthritic, another group waddled when they walked and were so abnormally thin it was scary. A Wildwood, New Jersey, report detailed an abnormally large man who had a green wire grafted onto his skin, visible when his pants legs hiked up.

A member of one group, wearing black hats pulled over their eyes and long, black trench coats in the summer heat, dropped a portfolio, leaving behind a coin with a man who looked like a wolf on one side and navigational lines and two crescent moons on the flip. The language on the coin could not be identified.

An alleged Man in Black was photographed in New Jersey and the picture was published in the Fall 1968 issue of Saucer magazine, accompanied by the car he drove and a detailed witness account. One sighting revealed a Man in Black leaving a mysterious object in the lobby of the U.S. State Department.

A Man in Black disintegrated a coin in a witness’s hand, assuring that his heart would do the same if he talked. One report said an ex-Air Force serviceman was gassed and interrogated by Men in Black after viewing classified NASA files. UFO researchers and witnesses reported receiving harassing phone calls from metallic voices. Security equipment reportedly malfunctions for no reason. Videos don’t tape. There are reports of phone line problems, clicking sounds on phone calls, and dead air on calls received in the middle of the night.

Electronics entrepreneur Paul Bennewitz picked up strange transmissions on his amateur equipment in New Mexico in 1979. He contacted nearby Kirtland Air Force Base to report it. They found he was picking up on their transmissions but encouraged him to continue. After a while, he too was visited by Men in Black.

In his 1952 book They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers, Albert K. Bender said he was visited by three men in dark suits who threatened to imprison him after forming the International Flying Saucer Bureau. Days after mailing out material he wanted checked before sending to Space Review magazine, he suffered a dizzy spell and men in black suits with black hats materialized in his room. He said the men’s eyes lit up and it felt like they were speaking directly to his mind. Bender believed they were part of the U.S. government.

Many MIBs claim they are representatives of a secret government organization. Some theorize the Men in Black may be aliens who look human. Author John A. Keel believes Men in Black come from another time-space continua. UFO Men in Black are not the same as the demonic visitors who predated them, most notably depicted in the Richard Gere-starring The Mothman Prophecies. As a former journalist who went to work at a startup, solicitations for tech industry events show up in my inbox with some frequency. But this was a new one:

“We are bringing together the sacred plant medicine Ayahuasca with leaders at the world’s most innovative startups,” the email said. “Together we will go on a journey to deeply explore our individual and collective purpose.”

Over the subsequent weeks, follow-up pitches about the Costa Rica retreat offered testimonials about the benefits of ayahuasca from the likes of the bestselling author and entrepreneurial figurehead Tim Ferriss and pro surfer Kelly Slater. “Every participant will be positively transformed. The lives they live, companies they build and examples they set will transform the world.”

My first thought is that I would love to be a fly on the wall at such an event. But there’s a point that gets lost in the sensationalist glee surrounding the idea of a bunch of tech bros tripping in the jungle: “Counterculture,” whether that means partying, looking down on mainstream religion, or embracing a hodgepodge of eastern religious values, is the norm in “Silicon Valley” — a catchall term I’m using here to broadly describe the technology workers not just in the Bay Area but also in New York and Los Angeles.

If you don’t fit into that — whether because you’re older, belong to a traditional religion that comes in conflict with countercultural values, or just aren’t that into partying — it can be hard to fit in. And that matters in an economically dominant field that’s hard enough to penetrate even without cultural obstacles.

Working in the industry, especially as a former Googler, when I hear allegations that tech companies have a baked-in bias against conservatism or claims that conservative employees didn’t feel comfortable being open, my immediate reaction has been: Well, of course they don’t. And such allegations have become a chorus on the right. But I think the kind of conservatism that Silicon Valley is hostile to has less to do with politics and far more to do with lifestyle.

Julie Fredrickson, a longtime tech entrepreneur and conservative Christian, tells me she frequently feels her religious beliefs are out of place in the tech world. “I’m confident that discovering I’m a Calvinist would lead to some awkward conversations I don’t necessarily want to have with Silicon Valley folks,” says Fredrickson, CEO of the cosmetics company Stowaway. “People who have actually, very carefully considered belief systems, whether religious or otherwise, don’t always feel safe expressing it.”

“What, really?” is a typical reaction among the entrepreneurial class when she mentions her religiosity, which she avoids bringing up unless asked, says Fredrickson. She added that she feels the need to explain her faith to reassure previously skeptical parties that she’s “rational.”

Fredrickson also was not raised Christian and frequently mentions how she came to it on her own terms and in tandem with her love of math (“a long story,” she says). It’s a stark contrast to the industry stereotype that anyone who adheres to organized religion must have had that belief imposed on them by their family.

At Google, few co-workers would blink an eye if you told them that you spent the previous weekend attending an electronic music festival in an otter costume, but you might get some funny looks if you admitted you went to church every weekend. I used to prowl around on a listserv of Googlers who considered themselves agnostics, atheists, and skeptics; the responses on a thread about the revelation that a small group of Christian employees had booked a conference room for a weekly prayer group ranged from, “We employ people who pray?” to “Is that really appropriate to do at work?” (Note: This is a company that hosted Justin Bieber concerts and pie-eating contests at the office.)

Religious conservatives aren’t the only people who find themselves shut out of Silicon Valley’s hegemonic culture. Thanks to its well-documented worship of youth — which ties back to the same ’60s-inspired counterculturalism — ageism is just as pervasive as one might expect.

It is, I think, the industry’s most insidious “-ism,” in part because of how little attention it gets. There was no hashtag activism movement launched when nearly 300 people joined an age discrimination lawsuit against Google, or when a report found that job opportunities in Silicon Valley started to dry up when employees hit their late 40s. It was even revealed that cosmetic surgery treatments were soaring in the Bay Area on behalf of employees who were afraid of looking their age.

Silicon Valley’s biases reveal a deep distaste for anything that could be considered “square.” The euphemistic HR term “culture fit” is meant to ensure employees are comfortable with a company’s ethos and attitudes. In reality, it’s a concept that’s more often used to exclude employees, regardless of age, who would prefer a quiet dinner at home rather than join their co-workers for Thirsty Thursday.

An obsessive attention to culture fit becomes an even bigger problem as the tech industry expands and continues to be a major driver of job growth, and companies like Amazon and Apple announce enormous new headquarters that may wind up in parts of the country that — the horror! — may have voted for Trump in 2016.

That’s why, upon reading about James Damore’s decision to bring a class-action lawsuit against Google for discriminating against white male conservatives, my mind jumped not to aggrieved Trump supporters, but rather to culturally conservative people, particularly those who follow traditional Western religions.

In Silicon Valley, to be perceived as inadequately open-minded — as defined by the norms of this peculiar culture — induces awkwardness at best and, sometimes, outright hostility. It’s a place where that false binary of “rationality” versus “faith” is often accepted as truth.

Half of tech workers identified as atheist or agnostic, according to a survey by the Lincoln Network, an organization dedicated to advancing principles of economic conservatism in the tech industry. That’s compared to just 7 percent of the US population who identify as atheist or agnostic (although an additional 16 percent identify as religiously unaffiliated, but without either of those two labels), and the respondents in this particular survey skewed slightly conservative.

At Google, I spent every day in a work environment with a specific cultural uniformity — one with its own rituals and deities that come to feel decidedly contradictory for a population that so fervently rejects “faith.”

One quick scan through the email from the ayahuasca invitation, and a pattern of vocabulary emerges: “Sacred,” “purpose,” “transformation” — with this kind of language, you may as well be in church. Companies profess to be driven not by mere secular profit but a belief in changing the world; until his death, a speech by Steve Jobs was treated like a sermon.

Yet tech’s avowed rationalism and skepticism has some very obvious contradictions. There are prominent factions in Silicon Valley who would scoff at anyone’s belief that Jesus Christ could really perform miracles but who would have no problem believing a tweet that read “Just turned water into wine!” if it came from Elon Musk.

And as proved by tech’s reaction when Musk claimed he was pivoting from electric cars and batteries to selling flamethrowers and space cars, there are plenty of people who don’t question him when he’s joking. This, in turn, willed Musk to take himself seriously: He was joking at first, but enough people took him at face value that he ultimately sent one of his cars into space and sold 20,000 flamethrowers in around 100 hours.

It’s because Elon Musk sounds like he’s grounded in the language of science and invention, even when he’s being ridiculous. In recent years, Silicon Valley, or at least a sufficient number of prominent people in it, have shown themselves to be highly susceptible to some pretty irrational behavior if an idea somehow sounds scientifically valid.

In his forthcoming book Super Natural, which was previewed in an opinion piece for the New York Times called “Don’t Believe in God? Maybe You’ll Try UFOs,” psychology professor Clay Routledge argues that faith is a fundamental part of human behavior. Routledge explained to me over the phone that rationality and irrationality don’t exist in a binary. “Every person experiences both sides of these neural systems.”

For Routledge, people who are religious understand that they can switch between both sides of their brain — the rational and the more intuitive. He believes that people who flat-out deny that they have a more intuitive side have a tougher time distinguishing between the two. “The irony is that a lot of times it’s people who actually are religious explicitly, and know that, that are better at switching between the two modes,” he explained.

Everything I’m calling out about Silicon Valley comes with a caveat: I’m guilty of participating in much of this. I have gone to my fair share of counterculture-inspired events at the invitation of tech industry colleagues and thought little of it. I’ve also generally felt welcome and comfortable amid tech companies’ relaxed corporate cultures that encourage employees to bring their personalities and identities to work, blurring the line between the personal and professional. My thinking had always been, well, who wouldn’t like this?

But perhaps there are few more important mantras in Silicon Valley than the simple reminder that not everyone is like me.

Last month I ended up going to a tech retreat in hipster beach mecca Tulum, Mexico — the kind of event where the agenda included both sunrise meditations and parties until 4 am and was likely to draw the kind of crowd that felt it had the stamina for both. Much to my relief, it wasn’t like that: Many attendees were visibly older than the millennial demographic, and though there was an open bar every night, there were also alcohol-free meetups for those who were sober or in recovery.

Some people had even brought their small children along for the weekend. Yes, there were those late-night poolside parties with DJs, sweat lodge ceremonies, and talks about astrology too. But there were plenty of people there who I couldn’t imagine signing up for a Tim Ferriss-endorsed ayahuasca retreat any time soon.

The people who don’t fit today’s stereotypically freewheeling Silicon Valley mold, whether due to religious faith, family status, or simply a distaste for partying with their co-workers, are likely in the majority. As my former Google colleague Adam Singer tweeted in the wake of a notorious (and likely sensationalized) Vanity Fair piece about alleged “sex parties” in Silicon Valley, “99.999% of folk in Bay Area don’t go to sex parties, microdose LSD at work or drink water from the toilet.” (That last item a reference to a New York Times article about an outlandish trend of drinking untreated “raw water.”) Singer concluded: “But they make for good media stories to talk about the fringes.”

He’s right. But when the fringes have enormous influence over the culture and its perception, there’s a problem. Silicon Valley holds vast economic influence, and it needs to be open to hiring and retaining employees who don’t fit its image. Without it, paradoxically, an industry and culture that professes progressivism, open-mindedness, and a devotion to science and empiricism ends up becoming the most exclusionary and prone to magical thinking.

WE DID IT.

Well, I did it. I moved to the PNW, and I thought you guys might like to see some of the photographs we took along the way. Fair warning though, most of these are unedited, or straight off my insta, and I will be creating more posts to share the better quality, properly edited photographs off my DSLR.

We packed SO MUCH into our six day journey from Texas to Washington. The Best flew down from Washington to help me make the drive, as the husband is set to follow a few weeks from now.

The last few weeks in Texas flew by. Time became my most precious commodity, and as it dwindled, I began to feel anxious, nervous, and dare I say it…excited? My mom and I spent as much time together as we could; I cuddled my dogs as closely as possible and visited the rest of my local family. My husband and I attempted to steal private moments together, because even though . Previous to now, at most I have lived four driving hours away. This wasn’t goodbye forever, but it was still the biggest “see you later” I have ever experienced with my family. Now, situated in North Western Washington, I find myself thirty one driven hours, or four flown and two and a half driven, away from my little home town in Central Texas. I never realized that I could miss a state so much that I had spent so many years trying to get away from. Of course, it’s not really the state that I miss, it’s the people. But I digress…back to the pictures!

My final night in Texas was filled with rolling thunder clouds and this rich, vibrant sunset. After leaving my grandparents house, I decided to stop at a Walmart on the way back to Cisco and happened to look over and capture the skyline at just the right time. Early the next morning, we headed out.

DAY ONE: CISCO, TX TO ROSWELL, NM-5.5 HOURS/356 MILES

Day one began at 5:00 AM CST, with the Best arriving about an hour and a half later. We were on the road soon after her arrival, my goodbyes fraught with my mother’s tears and my pups’ confusion at my leaving so early in the morning, my own tears briefly coming only after I was already on the high way. We stopped in Abilene one last time and said our goodbyes to my aunts, my Mini-Me, and my grandparents. With each goodbye, the finality of my actions began to sink in a little more and settle heavy on my heart. Luckily, the Best was there with humor, hours of us catching up, and a killer playlist. We travelled to Roswell, NM, via 380, a road that officially exists as one of the most mind numbing and soul crushing drives of my life, second only to the Mojave Desert, but oh, don’t you worry, we will get to that later. Arriving in Roswell, we decided to check in and then moseyed (do people even still use the word “mosey”? If not, let’s bring it back, y’all!) on over to the International U.F.O. Museum downtown. Cheesy, yet charming, little green men seemed to pervade every shop window and adorn every front entrance along our way. The Best purchased our tickets and lucky for us, the museum graciously gave military discounts as a thanks for her service. We sandwiched it for dinner in our hotel room and made an emergency Walmart run to pick up some athletic pants(okay, fine, boot cut yoga pants) for our next day’s stop, as the weather along our route was showing snow and rain for the next couple days and most of my clothes were sealed in vacuum pack bags in the back of the Jeep.

Lights out came fairly early, but sleep was hard to come by. When it finally graced me with its’ presence, rough dreams woke me more than once throughout the night.

DAY TWO: ROSWELL, NM TO WILLIAMS, AZ-8 HOURS/555 MILES

Day two began with a complimentary breakfast buffet at our hotel, both of our tired eyes puffy from fitful sleep and dearly wanting to put off driving for just a bit longer. Post-breakfast, our caffeine and food infused systems gave us the push we needed to get back on the road. This time, the Best was driving while I was able to take some pictures. Not that there was really much to photograph for the first couple hundred miles, except the vast rolling expanse that seemed to be New Mexico. I could see the solitary beauty in it, but even attempting to imagine living in that land filled me a sense of fear and trepidation. To those that do live there, you are a special kind of folk and I salute you for your bravery. I do not think that I could live somewhere so lonely as that.

As we neared Albuquerque the landscape finally started to get interesting, the flat expanse began to turn into foothills, and eventually, actual mountains. The road seemed to be disappearing faster beneath our feet, which could be the anticipation of leaving the flatness, or it could be that we were finally able to go a decent speed one we turned onto 40, which would be our home for the next couple days as we headed out to California.

We decided to stop for lunch when we reached Albuquerque, and having run out of time to stop while in Texas, we decided to make the most of our lunch stop and hit up the last Whataburger on our route. Even though I very, very rarely ate there while I lived near to one, I miss seeing those big orange and white W’s along the highway. It’s funny how you take a place for granted until you can’t have it anymore, right?

All eyes were on Amanda as we ate our lunch, grateful for the break from the Jeep. As much as we love her, being crammed into any vehicle with your belongings gets old really, really, really fast. After the hour break, we hit the pavement and left Albuquerque in our rear view.

Coming into Arizona, we went through several different types of weather, ranging from hot and dry, wet and rainy, and we even encountered snow. Flagstaff ended up being one of the most beautiful places we drove through, what with the snow capped trees and the general mountain town feel. Unfortunately, we didn’t stop, but we DID manage to snag some on the road pictures, even capturing Jiji and Luna the travel cats. Please bear in mind, these ARE road pictures, taken from cell phones, so please don’t look too harshly upon any blurring, lighting, etc. Thanks, loves!

So yeah, that was our little quick trip through Flagstaff. We arrived at our hotel with enough time to go get something to eat, and since we were just off of Route 66…we figured we might try out a classic diner. Thanks to Google, we found a local shake shoppe/diner that was supposed to be open for another two hours and wouldn’t you know it? We get there, and their lights are off! Immediately next door to our planned dining choice, was another little diner, Goldie’s Route 66 Diner.

We ordered drinks to start, and I was so excited to be able to purchase a glass bottle coke. I don’t drink coke very often, but when I do, glass bottle is best. Trust me on this one, okay? We enjoyed the kitschy decor, the cute little booths, and the friendly people. Our onion rings were the highlight of the meal, because we had a little snafu with our actual meal. Luckily, no harm, no foul, and they were nice enough to rectify the situation quickly. FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE, seriously, our waitress was a gem. We made our way back to the hotel, attempting to get to bed early, because we knew that the next day was our biggest adventure day of all.

We dedicated an entire day to exploring and visiting the South Rim entrance to the Grand Canyon. SO. WORTH. IT. So much so that I’m going to save the Grand Canyon for the next post! Honestly, we would have gladly spent more time there, but we wanted to get to our destination by Monday night, so bear with me on the photo overload coming your way.
