i rewatched disney’s hercules for the first time in years the other day, and despite the total diversion from what little established canon we’ve found in remaining sources (though i do wonder why disney would choose to adapt the myth of hercules and then go on to change literally everything except a couple names and the fact he’s strong), i am blown away by their absolutely genius move to turn the greek chorus into a gospel choir—like that’s such a fun way to incorporate not only the concept of the chorus as the fourth wall (i.e., interacting both with the viewers and with the characters) but also make the musical numbers fit in pretty seamlessly

This is why I say African music is SUPREME. Although we were stripped from our countries on the continent of Africa, stripped from our cultures, stripped from our religious traditions, and stripped from our families, we created an abundance out of nothing but our souls. The chart below stops in 1992. Think of all we have created from 1992 - present.

”What did you do with your weekend, Elli?” you ask? No you didn’t, but I’m telling you anyway.
I was on TV!
My choir was asked to be part of this 50 years of ABBA celebration. On LIVE TV! 🤩 At prime time!!
It was SO much fun! And it went SOOOO well! When we were first revealed from behind a curtain halfway through the first song we were in, the crowd went mental and I wish that was as clear in the recording as it was IRL. The shouts and the applause… I’ll live off that adrenaline kick for the rest of my life.
If you feel so inclined, you can watch it HERE (world wide) until the 3rd of October 2024.
Time stamps for the four songs we were part of:
I Still Have Faith In You: 37:45
Lay All Your Love On Me: 01:11:00
Waterloo: 01:37:05
Gimme Gimme Gimme: 1:42:25

My feelings about the Black church aside, I adore gospel. The sound, but most importantly, what it represents to me. The way my ancestors really took a religion forced upon them, and found a way to create a music that channels from the soul raw power, joy, and community? To find the divine in their bodies regardless?? Tbh, that's Black American music and culture as a whole, right there! To take such harsh circumstances and create! To create something new, something fr fr better than what was there before, which then makes those who mean to oppress us yearn to replicate us instead!

jjk readers, i have a genuine question regarding shoko in chapter 220. specifically, this panel:
Tumblr media
when shoko says: "that's something that would've never happened [...]" — what exactly is she referring to?
i thought it was simple: that she'll never fall in love with either gojo or geto. however, the whole passage spoke about loneliness/being alone.
am i reading it wrong when i think shoko's line refers back to gojo saying "i won't leave anyone alone"? especially because in the next panel she emphasises that gojo was never alone, she was there all along.
Tumblr media
so, how i'm interpreting the panel now is something alone the lines of: "i was in love with one of you...being alone is something that i won't ever let happen."
i don't mind romantic implications; however, i don't know if that fits the general plot? i'm just confused, and it's mostly because of the various translations.
i also don't have knowledge in japanese, so i'm not able to read the untranslated panels (which might change everything).
though, if shoko stayed alongside gojo to make sure he wouldn't feel alone, it's rather sad that she feels "unseen" (for lack of better words). still, i do like to believe that these two are each other's (emotional) support systems in times of need and actually do spend moments together in their adult life (e.g.: the lightnovel).
but yeah, it would be cool if someone could share their two cents on this !!

holy torch my perdition how important you will be, why don't you lay it down right beside me? won't you lay it all by me? i am not an apparition but i'll haunt you, you'll see. clad in ballads, wine and orchids, cause i know the kind you seek. you used to lay down all around me, you used to lay it all by me. no it's not just adulation, i will hold you for me. cut the grass, tend the flowers, downing bottles by the crease. light a smoke up in the sun room and pretend i'm my tree. prove it not, rock of ages, in a row they're lies to me. winter costs you peace of mind now, winter cost your valentine. why won't you come back on the runner? won't you come right backside? i'll be singing for your health. i'll be righteous you'll see
