💡 FACT: “That” and “which” are often interchangeable.
❗️But not always … and grammar nerds will fight you on it.
“That” is restrictive → it limits or defines.
“Which” is nonrestrictive → it adds extra info (and needs commas).
Examples:
The book that has a red cover is mine. 📕 (There are multiple books; the red one is mine.)
The book, which has a red cover, is mine. 📕 (There’s one book, and oh btw—it’s red.)
✨ The difference is subtle, but it can change the meaning.

Past Tense in English Grammar
Have you ever wanted to tell a story about what already happened? Maybe you shared a memory, described your day, or talked about something that occurred years ago. If so, then guess what — you were already using the past tense!
Let’s break down the past tense in English grammar with clear rules, examples, and how you can use it like a pro. 👇

Tumblr media
🕰️ What Is Past Tense?
Past tense is a verb form that describes actions or events that happened in the past. Simple, right? Whether it happened yesterday, last year, or just a moment ago — it all counts as past tense.
Example:
I watched a movie last night. 🎬
They played cricket on Sunday. 🏏
These actions are done and over. That’s what the past tense is for.
🧠 Types of Past Tense
There are four main types of past tense in English:
1️⃣ Simple Past
Used for completed actions in the past.
Structure: Subject + verb (past form)
Example: She visited Paris.
2️⃣ Past Continuous
Used for ongoing actions in the past.
Structure: Subject + was/were + verb(-ing)
Example: They were studying all night.
3️⃣ Past Perfect
Used when one past action happened before another.
Structure: Subject + had + past participle
Example: He had finished dinner before the guests arrived.
4️⃣ Past Perfect Continuous
Used for actions that started in the past and continued for some time before another past action.
Structure: Subject + had been + verb(-ing)
Example: I had been working there for two years before I quit.
✅ When to Use Past Tense
Use past tense when:
You're telling a story from the past 🏞️
You're writing a biography ✍️
You're describing something you experienced 🤔
Examples:
We traveled to Goa last summer.
He didn’t attend the meeting.
Did you call her yesterday?
🧩 Past Tense Rules You Should Know
Regular verbs usually end in -ed
walk → walked
jump → jumped
Irregular verbs change forms
go → went
eat → ate
take → took
For negatives and questions in simple past, use did
I didn’t go to school.
Did you watch the movie?
🌟 Final Thoughts
The past tense is your storytelling superpower. Whether you're writing essays, journaling your thoughts, or having deep conversations — the past tense helps you share what once was.
Once you understand the structure and get comfortable with regular and irregular verbs, it becomes second nature.
So next time you talk about yesterday, last week, or your childhood memories — you’ll know exactly what to say, and how to say it ✨
