The Importance of Getting Feedback to Grow Your Writing Skills
As a writer, you will need to grow your skills, and to do this, you need feedback. Finding someone you trust and whose opinion you value is crucial. You need to ask them for their honest feedback. This can be difficult for most writers to hear, but if you don't know someone else's opinion, you'll never know how to grow your skills.
The Reality of Feedback
Writing is like anything else in life: to us, it seems perfect, but to someone else, that can be far from the truth. Sometimes, we think feedback can be terrible to hear, but in reality, it is the key to success.
As a writer, you should find a trusted mentor to help you improve your writing. Almost every writer has one—someone who will not lie to them no matter what. These are the types of mentors you need to find, not someone who will just lie to make you feel better.
Seeking Honest Feedback
If you can't find someone who will tell you the truth, then people online will certainly tell you without hesitation. They may not be very friendly about it, but at least it would let you know if your story is any good or if it needs improving.
I personally don't have anyone besides my mother to get feedback from, which is why I share some of my stories on Quotev to get feedback. However, my mother is very difficult to impress, so if I can get her to like something, then it has something going for it.
Options for Getting Feedback
As a writer, you have different options to get feedback. Just choose what’s right for you and what’s available to you. This can include trusted friends, family members, mentors, online writing communities, or feedback platforms. Each of these options can provide valuable insights and help you improve your writing and your chances of success.
What challenges do you face when seeking feedback? Share your experiences in the comments!

Honestly my best fandom experience was engaging/supporting fandom creators and artists and doing my own stuff aka doing drawings and writing stories for my own pleasure (and not sharing on internet att) without interacting with other fans… my peak was that…… no drama, no accusations, no bullying, no bitches trying to make me evil guy, no interest in problematic people within fandom, no friends or fellow fans of the fandom; it was just me, my own content creations, other creator’s creations, the canon itself, and that’s it. I was rawdogging that shit blissfully unaware and enjoying fandom in every possible way even in solitude, and now I’m even afraid to give character headcanon bc phantom antis in my head already cancelling me for making hc too woke” or “too conservative” :///

Understanding Your Target Audience in Writing
When writing any story or content, you must understand who you're writing for. Are you writing for children, teens, adults, or the elderly? This is very important to determine beforehand because you will need to create stories that your target audience will appreciate.
Writing for Different Age Groups
1. Children:
- Most children like pictures in their books with short paragraphs and simple wording to help them understand the content. You may even use playful language to entertain children and gain their interest.
- Avoid big words and adult language, as it would be inappropriate.
2. Teens:
- Use bigger words, but keep it simple. Create stories that relate to teens and their interests, such as going out with friends, movie theaters, parties, or other activities that appeal to them.
- Avoid adult content and focus on appropriate language.
3. Adults:
- Write with more advanced terminology but keep it accessible to make it easy to read. In this scenario, you can explore a wide range of themes, as long as you include content warnings for potentially triggering topics.
4. Elderly People:
- Write books that are less violent. Many elderly people enjoy heartfelt stories full of life lessons and personal growth, showing how a person can improve by living and growing.
Each age group has different preferences. Not all will like what I have described, but it's a starting point. By taking information from a majority, you can make better judgments about what to write.
Importance of Understanding Your Target Audience
Determining what your target audience likes is crucial to cater to their preferences, make sales, and grow a loyal following. Tailoring your content to fit your audience's interests and expectations increases the chances of your work being well-received.
How do you find ways to tailor to your target market? Let me know in the comments!
