#OnThisDay in 1960, the F. W. Woolworth lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, was desegregated.
Six months earlier, four North Carolina A&T State University students known as the #GreensboroFour “sat-in” at the whites–only lunch counter of retail store. When they were refused service, they sat peacefully until the store closed.
Their actions that day sparked a sit-in movement that eventually spread to 55 cities in 13 states, desegregating lunch counters one-by-one across the nation.
64 years later, we honor the #GreensboroFour’s bravery, and share this history as a reminder that young people have POWER. 🙌🏿

I don't usually post for throwback Thursday, but today's Joseph McNeil's birthday! He was born on March 25 1942. For those who don't know, he was one of the Greensboro four from the Greensboro sit-in. On February 1, 1960 in Greensboro, North Carolina, 4 young black men did a sit-in to protest segregation at the Greensboro Woolworth's lunch counter that refused them service. The Greensboro four are David Richmond, Jibreel Khazan (then known as Ezell Blair Jr), Joseph McNeil, and Franklin McCain. Their protest sparked more sit-ins throughout the Southern and Northern states. These nation wide sit-ins led many places to change their segregated policies (including Woolworth's). When I was in high school, I was a finalist in a Black History month essay contest. The three finalists went to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History for them to announce the winner, and I took my Journalism classmates and friends with me. Even though I didn't win the contest, I still felt like a winner because I got to meet Joseph McNeil!! We took pictures in front of the original bench they did the protest on, and I remember feeling so humbled and overwhelmed. A big part of black history is honoring those who come before us, and I'm so grateful to the Greensboro four for all they've contributed to black history! Here's some more info about the Greensboro four: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/lessons-worth-learning-moment-greensboro-four-sat-down-lunch-counter-180974087/ https://www.history.com/news/greensboro-four-sit-in-civil-rights #tbt #greensborofour #blackhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CM3a19hrDID/?igshid=jocgghj710j7

Reposted from @civilrightsorg #OTD in 1960, four Black college students from North Carolina A&T sat down at a lunch counter at Woolworth’s in segregated Greensboro, North Carolina. Their passive resistance and peaceful demand helped ignite a youth-led movement to challenge racial inequality throughout the South. #BlackHistoryMonth #GreensboroFour #CivilRightsMovement https://www.instagram.com/p/CZdO7VYAq_edsPrDpMgu4q6p_YW9AclV0-Lw-o0/?utm_medium=tumblr

#realtalktuesday In 1926 our ancestor #cartergwoodson started the process that would create #blackhistorymonth so the accomplishments of our people could be recognized. Exactly 34 years later the #greensborofour started the sit in movement so the Humanity of our people could be recognized. Without their contributions our people very well could still be consider 3/4 of a human being with inferior intelligence (which we all know was bs from the beginning anyway, but the truth always comes to light.) On Feb. 1, 1960, four young African-American men sat down at the whites-only lunch counter of the Woolworth store in Greensboro, N.C., and set in motion one of the most remarkable and effective protest campaigns in our nation’s history. As President Trump fans the flames of a racial fire, the history of this sit-in movement offers powerful lessons. @realdonaldtrump Click the link in our bio 👆or visit teenkidsnews.com to learn more. #GreensboroFour #CivilRights #NorthCarolina #BlackHistory https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz859-nFiU_/?igshid=kj9ceww5zpv3

#OTD in 1960: Four Black students from North Carolina A&T sat down at a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, NC. Despite staff consistently refusing to serve them, they repeated their peaceful protest daily — joined by more and more students. Eventually, 45 students were arrested and charged with trespassing.
The students’ activism helped launch a sit-in movement in over 100 cities, leading to the integration of many stores years before the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964.
64 years after their first day of protest, we honor the bravery and commitment of the #GreensboroFour: Jibreel Khazan (formerly Ezell Blair Jr), Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, and David Richmond. Their activism reminds us that young people have the power to inspire radical systematic change 🙌🏿

Today’s #sjcomix365 is the kid’ graphic novel, ‘SIT-IN: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down’. This book is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in, staged in Greensboro North Carolina, when four college students staged a peaceful protest that became a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement. Andrea Davis Pinkney uses poetic, prose to tell the story of these four young men who followed the strategy of peaceful protest best known through the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King. Brian Pinkney embraces a new artistic style, creating expressive paintings filled with emotion that mirror the hope, strength, and determination that fueled the dreams of not only these four young men, but also countless others. #Greensborofour #blackhistory #civilrights #bhm2019 #kidscomics https://www.instagram.com/p/BtgUkwxgZRL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=p3okp57svqsu

#sayitlikeitissaturday This week I was blessed to talk to my youngest son's grandfather who was at #NCAT during the sit ins. He shared how so many of the students from the other local colleges, black and white, really stepped up and pushed the moment into a movement. It was amazing to have that first hand account. I will forever be grateful for his sharing with me and these men literally opening up millions of doors for our people. #greensborofour #februaryone #thankyou #freedomfighters #powertothepeople #blackhistory #fearlessfebruary https://www.instagram.com/p/B8CTkX9jBP9/?igshid=8kp5xhaz0pq6
