Subway Tile
Subway tile, with its clean lines, understated elegance, and versatility, has firmly cemented its place as a design classic in the world of interior décor. Originating from the walls of the New York City subway stations in the early 20th century, this simple yet stylish tile has transcended its utilitarian beginnings to become a beloved feature in homes, restaurants, and commercial spaces worldwide. In this exploration, we delve into the enduring appeal of subway tile, its rich history, contemporary applications, and why it continues to captivate designers and homeowners alike.
Origins and Evolution
The story of subway tile begins in the early 1900s when George C. Heins and Christopher Grant LaFarge, architects commissioned to design the New York City subway system, sought a durable, easy-to-clean, and visually appealing material for the walls of the underground stations. They settled on glazed white tiles measuring 3 inches by 6 inches—dimensions that would become synonymous with subway tile. The practicality of these tiles soon caught on, spreading to subway systems in other cities and eventually transitioning into residential and commercial interiors.
Initially, subway tile was mainly used in bathrooms and kitchens due to its water-resistant properties and ease of maintenance. However, as design trends evolved, its applications expanded. Today, subway tile can be found adorning entire walls, backsplashes, and even fireplace surrounds, lending a timeless charm to any space it inhabits.
Tumblr media
Characteristics and Appeal
What sets subway tile apart and contributes to its enduring appeal? Several key characteristics make it a favorite among designers and homeowners:
Versatility: Subway tile's simple rectangular shape and neutral color palette make it incredibly versatile. It can effortlessly complement a wide range of design styles, from traditional to modern, industrial to farmhouse.
Timelessness: Despite its humble origins, subway tile has stood the test of time. Its classic aesthetic ensures that it never goes out of style, making it a safe choice for both timeless designs and contemporary spaces.
Reflective Properties: The glossy finish of glazed subway tile not only adds a touch of elegance but also helps bounce light around a room, making it appear larger and brighter—a particularly desirable trait in smaller or darker spaces.
Affordability: Compared to other types of tile, subway tile is often more budget-friendly, making it an accessible option for homeowners looking to update their interiors without breaking the bank.
Ease of Maintenance: With its smooth surface, subway tile is easy to clean, requiring only a simple wipe-down with a damp cloth or mild cleaning solution to keep it looking pristine—a practical choice for high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
Contemporary Applications
While subway tile remains true to its roots in many ways, contemporary design trends have seen it used in innovative and unexpected ways:
Color Variations: While white subway tile remains a classic choice, homeowners and designers are increasingly experimenting with different colors, from soft pastels to bold hues, to add personality and flair to their spaces.
Pattern Play: Traditional subway tile installation involves a simple brick pattern, but modern interpretations often feature creative layouts such as herringbone, basketweave, or stacked arrangements, adding visual interest and dimension to walls and surfaces.
Mixed Materials: Combining subway tile with other materials such as glass, metal, or natural stone can create striking contrasts and textures, adding depth and character to interiors.
Large Format Tiles: In recent years, larger-format subway tiles have gained popularity, offering a contemporary twist on the traditional look while reducing grout lines for a cleaner, more streamlined appearance.
Non-traditional Spaces: While subway tile is most commonly associated with kitchens and bathrooms, its versatility allows it to be used in unconventional spaces like living rooms, bedrooms, and even outdoor areas, adding a touch of urban sophistication wherever it's applied.
Sustainable Options
As sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration in design, manufacturers are responding by offering eco-friendly alternatives to traditional subway tile:
Recycled Materials: Some subway tile manufacturers now offer products made from recycled glass or ceramic, reducing the environmental impact of production while still maintaining the tile's quality and durability.
Low VOC Finishes: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in many conventional tile glazes can contribute to indoor air pollution. Choosing subway tile with low or zero VOC finishes helps improve indoor air quality and minimize harmful emissions.
Local Production: Opting for subway tile produced locally reduces transportation-related carbon emissions and supports local economies, making it a more sustainable choice for environmentally conscious consumers.
Tips for Incorporating Subway Tile into Your Space
Whether you're renovating a kitchen, updating a bathroom, or simply looking to add a touch of timeless elegance to your home, here are some tips for incorporating subway tile into your space:
Consider Layout Options: Experiment with different tile layouts to find the one that best suits your aesthetic preferences and complements the overall design of your space.
Mix and Match: Don't be afraid to mix subway tile with other materials or tile shapes to create a unique and personalized look that reflects your style.
Choose Grout Wisely: The color and width of grout can significantly impact the final appearance of your subway tile installation. Consider contrasting grout colors for a bold statement or matching grout colors for a seamless look.
Accessorize Thoughtfully: Pair subway tile with fixtures, hardware, and accessories that complement its classic aesthetic, such as brushed nickel faucets, vintage-inspired lighting, or marble countertops.
Think Beyond Walls: While subway tile is commonly used on walls and backsplashes, don't overlook its potential for flooring, fireplace surrounds, or even as a decorative accent in unexpected places.
Conclusion
Subway tile's journey from the underground walls of New York City subway stations to the interiors of homes and businesses around the world is a testament to its enduring appeal and timeless charm. With its versatility, affordability, and sustainability, subway tile continues to captivate designers and homeowners alike, offering endless possibilities for creative expression and timeless elegance in any space it inhabits. Whether you're embracing its classic simplicity or reimagining it in innovative ways, subway tile is sure to remain a beloved staple of interior design for generations to come.

How To Choose Shower Tile?
Tumblr media
The crowning glory of your bathroom is the shower. Choosing the right shower tile is essential to make your bathroom shine. It can be an overwhelming and disappointing experience if the right tile is not selected for its purpose. You need to choose a good shower tile to avoid untimely tile repairs or updates that can be costly. Determining a good tile can help you pick the right choice and avoid regrets.
What makes a good shower tile?
There are three points to consider to identify a good shower tile.
Proportion
Proportion is critical with all wall tiles, and it’s the same with shower tiles. Your choice of tile should be proportionate to what is inside your bathroom. A good tile should fit very well in the area where you will be installing it. Nowadays, large tiles are more popular for a modern look. If you would like your bathroom or shower to look spacious, consider using large format tiles. The beauty of large shower tile is it creates a wide space look with less grout line.
Long-term performance
A good tile should also have a long lifespan and can withstand damage. We recommend porcelain tiles as it is known to be durable, and won’t scuff, tear, dent, or puncture. If you compare porcelain to ceramic tiles, they are denser and less porous. This makes porcelain tile more impervious to moisture than ceramic. On the other hand, ceramic tiles are less dense and more prone to cracks and breaks. To test, you may try chipping a piece of porcelain tile. You can see that the damage is nearly invisible and the color continues all the way through. We highly recommend porcelain tile due to its durability which is suited for heavy usage than ceramic tile.
Tumblr media
Aesthetics
The overall look of your shower tile adds beauty to your bathroom. For your bathroom and shower to look sleek or classy, choose light shades of tiles. A light shade tile not only offers an elegant look, but it will also make the bathroom look more spacious. To achieve that “rich and clean” look, another choice is glass tile. The translucence of glass with its variety of colors is an excellent material you can choose. The light that glass tiles reflect gives a brighter and larger appearance to your bathroom.

The popularity of subway tiles quickly spread to residential and commercial spaces, and they have remained a timeless design choice ever since.
Types of Subway Tiles
Subway tiles come in a variety of materials, colors, and finishes. Ceramic and porcelain are the most popular choices, but glass, natural stone, and metal options are also available. The finish of subway tiles can be glossy, matte, or textured. Additionally, there are beveled edge subway tiles that add dimension to the classic look.
Choosing the Right Subway Tile
When choosing subway tiles for your home, there are several factors to consider. The first is the material and finish. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are more affordable and easier to install, but glass and natural stone tiles offer a higher-end look. The finish of the tiles should also be chosen based on the desired look and level of maintenance. Finally, the color and shape of the subway tiles should complement the overall design of the space.

Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

Any grout should be sealed to prevent staining or discoloration. In the event of any cracks or chips, tiles should be replaced promptly to prevent further damage.

Take it Slow - Part Sixty-Seven
a/n: okay this is my first shot at a harry:y/n fic, and it will be multiple parts. y/n had a bad experience with an ex over a year ago, and finally accepts her coworker and good friend Niall’s invitation to go on a blind date with his friend Harry.
Warnings: Fluff and Smut, what else is new?
Masterpost (all previous parts can be found in the masterpost)
Mondays had been your days to meet Harry at his office, but now that he was working on his studio, you thought it would be nice to bring him and your dad some lunch. You were so happy it was almost May. The weather was starting to get really nice. You were able to go for runs outside on the days it didn’t rain.
“Hey, wanna come with me to the studio for lunch? I’m buying.” You say to Niall.
“Sure! It’ll be nice to get out for a bit. I’m sure your dad will love to see me.” He laughs and you shake your head at him.
You stop by a sandwich shop on your way, and head into the studio. You bite your bottom lip when you see Harry. He was use a nail gun to put some cabinets up for what would soon be a kitchen area. You dad was finishing grouting the tile. Harry steps down from the step stool and wipes his forehead of sweat. He was wearing a snap-back to help catch some of the sweat. He looks over at you and Niall and smiles.
“Oi, looks like it’s lunch time.” He extends a hand to help your dad up.
“Hi guys! It looks better and better every time I come here.” You hand them the sandwiches and give your dad a hug.
“Hi Niall.” Your dad shakes his hand. “Been too long.”
“I know, things have been crazy.”
“They’ve put some picnic benches out at the park across the street do you guys wanna eat outside? It’s so nice out.”
Everyone agrees and you head outside. Harry looked so good in his loose jeans and work-boots, you couldn’t get over it. He sits next to you, and Niall sits next to your dad.
“Everyone from New York has finally left, thank god.”
“That’s great!” Harry says, relieved Mark was finally gone.
“How are classes going, Y/N?” Your dad asks.
“Oh, they’re good. I’ll finish this one in a couple of weeks, and the next won’t start until June so I’ll a month to take a little break.”
“Your brother’s coming in Friday to help out, maybe we could all have dinner together after.”
“Sure! You both could come over, I can cook something up instead of going out.” You say. Harry puts his hand on your knee.
“That works.” You dad smiles. You knew he always preferred a home cooked meal.
“I could work from home that day and watch the baby if he wants to bring him in too.” Harry’s face lights up.
“I’ll run it by him. I’m sure his wife could use the night off.”
Niall distracted your dad for a few minutes so you could kiss Harry goodbye.
“How are you feeling today? You were a little wobbly yesterday…” You say quietly.
“Oh, I’m fine now.” He smiles. “Thanks for checkin’ in.” He kisses the top of your head, and goes back into the studio.
When he gets home later that night he’s exhausted. You had dinner ready to go, and he inhaled it.
“Jesus, Harry, you were hungry. Do you want a second helping?”
“No, thank you.” He rubs his eyes. “I need to go to bed, I’m so tired, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay! Go, I’d rather you get your rest. I have homework to do anyways.” You give him a reassuring smile.
“Well, maybe I could just rest on the sofa so I’m still hanging out with you.”
“If you wanna go to bed you can, really, it’s okay.”
“No.” He pouts. Oh no, you’re tried, grouchy boy was making an appearance. “M’gonna go put some sweats on and then I’ll come sit with you.” You nod and he walks out into the bedroom.
You grab your laptop and sit on the sofa. Yo start typing away at your forum post, and Harry comes out in just a pair of sweat pants. He plops down next to you and waits for you to finish. The second your laptop is on the coffee table he his is resting in your lap.
“Let me get a pillow, it’ll be more comfortable for your he-“
“No.”
“Harry.” You sigh. “Do you wanna just lay between my legs then?”
“Yes.”
You adjust so your back is against the arm rest, and Harry’s head is on your stomach. Your hands play with his hair and it didn’t take him too long to drift off. Times like this you think back to when you two first really cuddled together. He had had a long day at work and he asked you to lay with him. You had been on top of him at the time and you both fell asleep. That was when you knew you really felt safe with him. You sigh happily as you watch TV.
//
Friday rolls around, and your brother drops the baby off with you so he can meet your dad and Harry at the studio. You had a wonderful day watching him while getting some emails done. You never really got alone time with your nephew. You played with him for a little while, and then took him for a walk in his stroller.
You decided on making a meatless baked ziti for dinner. It was something everyone could enjoy, and easy enough to make. You whip up a big salad to go with it, and take the baby with you to the market quick so you can grab a baguette.
Harry sends you a few pictures of the progress they’ve made. The kitchen and Mariah’s office was entirely done. Next week they’d work upstairs to get Harry’s office situated. Then all he’d have to do is paint.
His social media was getting more and more hits thanks to you, and he was already booking out into July. You were so proud of him.
You send him a selfie or two with the baby and it makes him swoon. He couldn’t wait to have a baby with you some day.
Around 6PM you hear them come in through the door. You were sitting on the sofa feeding the baby. His eyes were rolled into the back of his head from loving his bubby. You had your eyes on him and you were humming.
“Hi guys.” You say smiling. “Dinner’s gonna be another ten minutes in the oven, everything else is on the table already.” You finish giving the baby his bubby and you sit him up so he’ll burp. He perks up when he sees your brother. “Is that your daddy, did you miss him?” You coo. Your brother smiles and takes him from you.
“How was he?”
“Perfect! He’s the easiest baby in the world.” You go over and kiss Harry on the cheek.
“M’just gonna wash up quick.”
Your dad was walking around. You realize it’s the first time he’s been over and inside your apartment.
“Dad, I’m sorry, let me show you around. You and Kyle can clean up in the guest bath.” You take the baby back from your brother.
Harry meets you in the kitchen and you hand him off to him so you can take the ziti out of the oven.
“Smells so good in here.” He says holding the baby with one arm. “Hey little guy, did you have a nice day with your auntie?” He boops his nose. You smile at the two of them.
“I got a baguette from the market.”
“Did you cut it up already?”
“Yes, and I saved you an end piece just how you like. Go sit down, I’ll bring this out.” Harry kisses you and then goes out to the dining area.
“I’ll take him, he’s fading, I’m gonna put him in the car seat so he can sleep.”
Your brother drags the seat over and places your nephew in it and his eyes slowly close. Once he’s settled, the four of you sit down to eat.
“You guys got so much done today. It’s amazing.”
“Yeah, all the heavy stuff should be done next week, and then it’s off to painting.”
“Rachel’s gonna help Harry paint. You guys should see the color’s she’s picked out for the offices, it’s going to be beautiful.”
The chatter is nice and light around the table. You bring out some coffee and fruit for dessert.
“Y/N, when do you think you’ll have an official house warming?” Your brother asks.
“I’m not sure, we were thinking end of May so it would be warm enough to be able to go out on the balcony.” You point behind you.
“That’d be great. Do you guys have a grill or anything?”
“We have a little indoor one.” You look at Harry. “I didn’t even think of that. We need to get a table and some chairs for out there.”
“We could go to Lowe’s this weekend and check out the prices.”
“I’ve got some gift cards to there, hold on.” You dad takes out his wallet.
“Dad, you don’t have to-“
“I don’t mind.” He smiles. “Here, it hasn’t been used, but I can’t remember how much is on there.” He slides a card towards you.
“Thanks.” You smile.
Your brother and dad eventually leave. It was a great day and evening. You and Harry slump onto the sofa.
“You were cute when we got in.” He says drumming his fingers on your knee.
“What do you mean?” You giggle.
“Feedin’ the baby. It was cute. You were like hummin’ to him and stuff.”
“Harry…”
“What?”
“I know where this is going.”
“Where what is goin’? I can’t pay my beautiful, amazing, wonderful girlfriend a compliment all of a sudden?”
“Wow, so many descriptive words in one sentence.” You say sarcastically. “You see me with him, and then you have baby fever for like a week.”
“To be honest, I always have baby fever, I just don’t express it.” You laugh at him. “With me ownin’ my own business imagine how easy it’ll be for us someday. Your place has maternity leave, and then when you go back to work I could just bring him or her with me to work. I could have everything set up for them there. Then we’d come home and they’d be all excited to see their mummy.” You blink at him.
“Oh, so you’d get to spend all the time in the world with them?”
“I’d take ‘em to come visit you when I could, and you’d come visit us.”
“You know the maternity leave is actually really good. You get three months paid, and then you get another three months paid working from home. And then you can like choose to work half days and shit, it’s amazing. At least we wouldn’t need child care. My mom could come and help out like she does with my nephew.”
“They essentially give you six months off? That’s almost unheard of here.”
“I know, I’m telling you the CEO is incredible.”
“C’mere, come sit on me.” You giggle and crawl into his lap. He rests his hands on your hips, and rubs his thumbs over your lower stomach. “Can’t wait to put one in yeh some day.”
“Oh, Harry.” You swat a hand at his shoulder.
“What? You know I do, and then I’d get to watch your belly grow.”
“Right, because that’s every girl’s dream. To be littered with stretch marks, a big strip of hair, and for their belly buttons to disappear.”
“Stop, that doesn’t happen to everyone.”
“I’m just saying, it’s not as romantic as you make it seem. I’ll be ten times more hormonal. I may get to a point where I have to go on bed rest.”
“I’d just take care of you.”
“You have an answer for everything.” You lean down and kiss him. “I saw you bring your tool-belt in with you.”
“Jesus, do you have a fetish or somethin’?”
“Harry, you just look so sexy with it on, will you please go put it on?”
“It’s just the belt, the tools aren’t even it it.”
“So? C’mon, let’s roll play a little. You can be the handyman that’s come to fix something for me in the bedroom, and I’ll be the needy, unsatisfied housewife.”
“You would so easily cheat on your husband?”
“Harry…please don’t be cheeky right now.”
“Okay, okay, I’ll go change.”
You wait for him anxiously and he comes back a few minutes later with a white t-shirt, jeans, and his tool belt on.
“The hat! Please put the snap-back on.” He sighs and goes back to get it.
“Happy now?”
“Yes!” You get up from the sofa and walk over to him. “Thank you for coming on such short notice.” Both of his eyebrows raise as you walk around him. “You see, my husband’s away on business and there are just some things a girl can’t take care of by herself.” You bite your lip and smile at him.
“That’s too bad. If I had a girl like you, I’d never leave yeh to do anything by yourself.” Your smile grows. You’re happy he’s willing to play along. “Show me what needs tendin’ to.”
“It’s in the bedroom, please follow me.” You giggle quietly. He follows you in. You tug at his collar and start kissing him.
“What if your husband comes home early?”
“He won’t, he’s too busy fucking his secretary.”
“What a fool.” He tilts your chin up and he kisses you again. “I’d take really good care of you if you were my wife.”
“Why not show me a little preview then?”
He steps back and takes his shirt off. You ogle his body.
“Jesus, Harry, you look-“ He puts his hand over your mouth.
“Can’t use my name, it ruins the illusion.”
“What should I call you then?”
“I don’t know, your handyman?”
“Okay, okay.” You clear your throat to get back into character. “My Mr. Handyman, you’re quite built.”
You reach your hands out to feel the muscles on his stomach, then his arms, and then his back. He smirks at the way you’re feeling him up. You walk back in front of him to face him.
“Haven’t been touched in so long.”
“Think I can fix that.”
He lifts you up and plops you down on the bed. He lifts your shirt off and unhooks your bra. He kneads your breasts his tongue slips into your mouth. You groan against him.
“Lay back.” You scooche further on the bed, lay back so he can undo your pants. He sees your lace, cheeky underwear. “Sorta naughty to be wearin’ this while your husband’s away.”
“Well, I’m a pretty naughty girl, Mr. Handyman.” You bat your eyelashes at him, and start to rub your clit over your panties. “Need someone to punish me.”
Harry’s face lights up. He undoes the tool belt, and lets it drop to the floor. He undoes his jeans and takes his boxers off. He gets on the bed and between your legs. He kisses your covered clit, and licks over your folds. He never really teased you like this, but then again, it wasn’t really him. He sucks on you through the material, and rubs his thumb over you. He grips your hips and flips you over. You get up on your knees and elbows. He slowly drags your soaked underwear off, and throws it on the floor.
He smacks your butt, not too hard. He did it the way he always did. You remember one time, early on, when he told you he’d smack you right on your clit, and you wondered if he was planning to do that.
“Hey, time out for a second.” You look over your shoulder at him. “I think we should have, like, a safe word, just in case one of us gets uncomfortable with the role play…” He says.
“Okay, should it be like a color or something?”
“How about yellow?”
“Okay, sure, yellow.”
“Alright…back to it then.” You giggle at him. You appreciated that he always seemed to think of everything. “So…uh, Mrs…Housewife, let’s take care of this problem you’ve been havin’.”
Harry grips your hips, and feel him lick from your clit to your folds. He hasn’t eaten you out from behind since god knows when. You grip at the comforter, loving the way it feels. He licks up dangerously close to your other hole and you flinch. He knows not to lick you there, he’s just testing the waters a bit. You were dripping wet, so whatever he was doing obviously felt good. He bites down onto one of your ass cheeks and sucks harshly. You gasp as your back arches. Harry had sort stopped leaving the really purple marks on you. He sits back and watches the color change on your skin.
He takes you and flips you onto your back. You look up at him and nod. He spreads your legs and lines himself up with you, thrusting in with a ton of force. He gauges the reaction on your face. He wants to have fun, not send you into a flash. He rubs your clit to soothe you a little while you reach up to grip at his shoulders.
He grabs one of your legs to put over his shoulder, and rocks in and out of you. He was hitting you nice and deep like you needed.
“Oh my god.” Your head rolls back into the mattress.
“Need this don’t you?”
“So bad.” You groan.
“Sit up on your elbows.” You raise an eyebrow at him, but you do as he says.
His hand trails up from your clit and rests on your stomach for a second. He swears he can feel himself going in and out of you. It slides up further and you think he’s just going to knead your breast, until it’s around your throat. He grips you, but not tightly, just resting it there.
“Handyman should use his hands, don’t you think?” You nod your head yes. “And you said you’ve been naughty, so…I think the best thing I can do is choke you a little.” He drops your leg from his shoulder. His thrusts continue, but he moves around in a circle. “Can I do that?”
“Yes.” You say in a whisper.
His thumb rubs over the front of your throat lightly, and then he gets a better grip on you. His other hand rubs your clit while he rocks in and out of you. He lets you lay back down all the way and you wrap your legs around his waist. He applies a little more pressure and watches you contort under him. Your cheeks had a deep blush over them.
Usually you were the one to choke him, but he was in full control tonight. You didn’t mind it really. After pegging him last weekend he deserved to have a little of the power back. Plus, you just like the way his strong hand felt around you. You were feeling a little light headed, but in a good way. His other hand rubs harshly on your clit, and you know your end is near.
He feels you tighten around his cock and he fucks you faster. You start panting and gasping, but he doesn’t let up. He hits your g-spot and rubs your clit just at the right place and you feel yourself release. Your back arches off the bed, and he rubs your clit the entire time, rocking in and out of you. He lets go of your throat and you take in as much air as you can.
“Come in mouth.”
“What?”
“Please, god, come in my mouth.” You groan.
Harry lets out a moan as he pulls out of you. You prop yourself up on your elbows and open your mouth for him. He angles himself, give himself a few quick pumps and comes. He comes in your mouth, down your chin, and on your chest. He made a mess of you. He goes to get off of you but your grab his face with one of your hands. You make eye contact with him as you swallow what actually got into your mouth. You lick over your chin, and then you scoop up what you can from your chest onto your finger, and suck on your finger. His mouth falls open while he watches you.
You go to speak, but you burst out laughing instead. Harry sits there, straddling you, very confused.
“Are you alright?”
“I’m fine.” You say, still laughing. “I’m just nervous. I’ve never done anything like that before.” His shoulders fall with relief.
“I didn’t hurt your little neck did I?” He leans in to inspect you. “Shit…”
“What?”
“Well, you can kind of see where my rings indented, should’ve taken ‘em off.”
“That’s what happens when you don’t full commit to your character.” You giggle.
“You don’t care if someone sees this?”
“It’ll fade. It’s probably less noticeable than a hickey. Speaking of which, I can’t wait to see the nasty one you left on my ass.”
“Hey, that wasn’t me that was the handyman.”
“Mhm.” You lean up and kiss him. “Was it fun?”
“Yeah…we could do it again sometime.” He gets off of you and follows you to the bathroom. You gasp when you see the bruise on your ass.
“Jesus, Harry…”
“S’not that bad.” He sighs. “We’ve been doin’ a lot of new stuff lately.”
“Guess so.” You shrug as you start to wash your face, having thrown your hair up in a bun. He leans against the sink counter as you apply your face-wash.
“Have you been bored with anything, is that why you’ve wanted to try so much?”
“Bored?!” You rinse off and pat your face dry. “Bored?!” You repeat. His face was stone cold. “Harry, how could you possibly think that? I love the way we have sex. From the way you stretch me out, every time with you is like the first time.” You take your hair out of the bun and shake it. “We’ve been together almost nine months, I just feel really close and comfortable with you. Enough to try some things out that I never had before.”
“So you never role played with anyone, ever?”
“Never!” You start to brush your teeth and he does the same. “Hold on, lemme pee.” He crosses his arms and looks in the other direction. “See! Super comfortable with each other.” He looks at you and smirks as you flush the toilet. You wash your hands and he uses the toilet next. “I was no virgin when we met, Harry, but I’ve had so many first with you.” He follows you out of the bathroom. “I’ve never been this close with a boyfriend before.” You both get into bed. “I feel like because I can just be myself with you, I’ve had the freedom to discover some new things that I like.” He lays his head on your chest. “I could never be bored, in any aspect of our relationship. Every day is like a new adventure.”
“You really mean that?”
“Of course! We don’t have to role play again if you didn’t like it.”
“S’not that I didn’t like it, I just don’t know how to pretend to be some macho dude.”
“You just look so fucking hot when you wear that stuff.”
“And I’ll gladly wear it for you anytime.”
“If you could role play as anything, what would you wanna do? I mean, we got to do one of my fantasies, what’s one of yours?” He sits up to look at you.
“Seriously?”
“Yeah! We should do what you wanna do too, it’s not all about me.”
“Okay, the butt stuff was something we both wanted, whether you believe that or not. So you can stop feeling guilty.”
“I don’t fe-“
“Yes you do, I can tell. We’ll do it again, trust me.” He runs a hand through his hair. “Anyways, I know you don’t wanna fuck in your office, so we could just use the loft, but I’ve had this…fantasy of you being like this…I don’t know CEO or something, somebody hire up, and I’m like your….assistant or something.” You hadn’t expected Harry’s fantasy of you to be so dominant. You were intrigued.
“Please, go on.”
“And well…there’s like all this tension between us right? Because, you can’t fuck your assistant, that’s against the rules. And I feel the tension too, but I can’t fuck my boss.” You bite your inner cheek to try not to laugh. This was very well thought out. “So, like, here’s the scene, so there’s one night we’re working late. You’re crazy overworked.” You nod. “And then I’m there, and I’m like you know what you need? To get fucked. Oh, I forgot to mention, you’re mean to everyone but me. So, I’m like you need to get fucked.”
“And how do you get me to agree to it?”
“I come in with a bottle of wine and two glasses, and I’m like let’s take a break.”
“Okay.”
“And then, I say you look tense, I could rub your shoulders. And you’re a little buzzed from the wine, so you roll with it, and-“
“There’s a lot of build up here.”
“Shh, I’m getting to it. So then, I’m like I can’t really get at you, let’s take your jacket off Miss Y/L/N, and you’re like okay. Then when I massage you skin to skin you start moaning, and it just escalates from there.”
“Oh it does?”
“Mhm, I fuck you on the desk, and then we have to keep it a secret. We say it was a one time thing, but we don’t mean it.”
“And you just came up with this elaborate fantasy all on your own?”
“Well…mostly…some…one of my romance novels sort of had a similar plot. But man, thinking of you like that, it really gets me going.”
“So even though I’m the CEO, you’re still the one to ultimately seduce me?”
“Yeah, you’re too much of a goodie goodie to break the rules.” He smirks.
“Well shit, guess I’ll just have to surprise you with that sometime.”
“You’d be into all that?”
“Would you wear your glasses?”
“Sure.”
“Yeah, I’d be into all of that.” He beams at you.
“I love you, so much. You are so the girl for me.” He chuckles and kisses you all over your face.
“I love you too, doll.”
He lays back down on your chest, and you play with his hair while you continue with your pillow talk. Eventually you both drift off. Harry was the perfect guy for you. Sure you had your ups and downs, but what couples didn’t? Every day you felt so lucky to be with him, but you were feeling that way now more than ever.

three, at the moment -- a costco blanket, my college blanket and a five-below blanket
42. Describe your kitchen plates.
white with a floral border
43. Describe your kitchen at the moment.
it’s lived-in -- we have a side table that’s always at the risk of a collapsing, a power strip that runs a kettle, microwave and toaster oven (you can never run two of them at once otherwise the strip shuts off), kitchen mats that will never get rid of their crumbs and a healthy, healthy pantry!

Sleepover? *flops in ask box in her pyjamas* I'm going to need to know: 1) Your Top 5 Baked Goods to EAT and Top 5 to MAKE; 2) Favourite album, candy/chocolate and nail polish (brand & colour) AND 3) your Opinion on that most controversial topic... MARZIPAN! (Delicious pillow of nut love or devil's tile grout?)
Just reading this made me hungry but let’s get down to this! YAY! :3
Top 5 Baked Goods to EAT
1. Cheesecake. Especially New York style. I would probably kill someone to be able to get a piece of cheesecake from Slice of San Francisco in Kopenhagen right now.
2. Wienerbrød (the one made in Kopenhagen ;___;)
3. Kanelstang
4. Kanelbullar (Swedish cinnamon buns)
5. Butterkuchen (Childhood Fave. It's a German thing. A yeast dough cake with lots of butter, icing and almonds)
Top 5 Baked Goods to MAKE
1. Kanelbullar (I love making yeast dough. It’s meditative. I can make this one in my sleep by now.)
2. German gingerbread!!! (The dough has to be made three months in advance to be ready by Christmas :3)
3. My new fave is definitely the Kanelstang because it looks so fancy. :D
4. Marzipan-Apple Cake (spoiler alert!)
5. Poppyseed-Marzipan cookies with jam filling (Nomnom)
Favorite album: R.E.M. "Green" simply because it has my favorite song of all times on it. (You are the everything) And because of the memories entwined with it. Reminds me of someone who used to be my favorite person but somehow it never happened for us. Bittersweet.
Favorite Candy: How am I supposed to choose only one?!? If I had to live with just one kind of candy left I guess I would choose peanut chews from Philly. They are so good. Chewy, sweet and stick peanut mass covered in dark chocolate. I love them.
Favorite nail polish brand and color: F.U.N lacquer, color Kiss me! (red with glitter)
My opinion on marzipan: I love it. I will bake with it, eat it in chunks, buy all the Christmas marzipan treats.. . Give me the marzipan. I am fine with people not liking it because there is more left for me then. Marzipan from Lübeck is definitely best. :3 My favorite thing as a kid were all the crazy figurines made of marzipan, like piggies, shamrocks, hearts, all sorts of animals really.
My fave from a year or two ago is this tho:
Tumblr media
Weißwurst and pretzels with mustard made of marzipan. Mhmmmm. The piece of wood is just actual wood tho. Bit disappointing.

Best Methods for the Zodiac Signs to Relax!
ARIES
Aries likes to relax in a way that appeals to their adventurous and impulsive nature. It’s not surprising to find you ripping around switchbacks on a mountain bike or traversing the shear face of a rock. Afterward, top it off with a burger and a frothy beverage at their favorite microbrewery.
TAURUS
The quintessential, self-indulgent Taurus pulls out all the stops when it comes to relaxation. Swathe yourself in a lush bathrobe at a ritzy spa for a long day of soaking and pampering. Nothing but the finest massages, facials and pedicures will do.
GEMINI
Your dual personality makes you comfortable alone or with a group of friends. Naturally intellectual, Gemini can sit down in solitude with a cup of coffee and complete a week’s worth of New York Times crossword puzzles. But if you’re hankering for your pals, head to the park, lie in the sun and enjoy a mean game of Frisbee.
CANCER
Cancer is much more comfortable relaxing with their clan rather than going to a spa for a beauty treatment. Plan a day of leisurely family time with a lovely brunch or a lively game of croquet. While soaking up the bon vivant, reminisce about the old times and enjoy the company of those you love most.
LEO
Dramatic Leo is all about the presentation and panache. Gather a group of friends for a day at the theater or a shopping spree at the most outrageous thrift stores. But before heading out of the house, put on an outfit that will grab the attention you seek.
VIRGO
Spend a day in the nooks and crannies of your home, dusting high and low, vacuuming those hard-to-reach spots and bleaching that stained grout. When you’re done, come up with a scheme that helps you get your junk drawer together. Then celebrate your tidy tasks with a cool glass of your favorite beverage.
LIBRA
Libra yearns to find balance in every aspect of life, including relaxation. To achieve this serenity, pick up your yoga mat and head to class, or if you’re into solitude, throw on your favorite DVD for a solo Pilates session at home. Then for a really delicious treat, schedule a full-body massage.
SCORPIO
The chatty Scorpio seeks relaxation around friends and conversation. Your effusive nature compels you to gather your pals for that famous coffee klatch. Spend the afternoon gossiping about the latest celebrity news, fashion trends and girly-girl gabbing.
SAGITTARIUS
Where there’s water, there’s a Sagittarius. You’ll find relaxation, spirituality and movement in nature, especially when it comes to water — ice or liquid. You love to show your agility in fresh powder or experience the soothing ebb and flow of the ocean.
CAPRICORN
Break out the brushes or wield that pen — Capricorn seeks relaxation through creative expression. Take your palette to your favorite natural setting and express yourself through colors. If you’re a writer, make some headway on that screenplay or short story.
AQUARIUS
Get out the knives and fire up the stove, Aquarius — you’re in for a long day of cooking. Go ahead, fry the fries, boil the bouillabaisse and steam the salmon. Use the freshest ingredients to prepare all your special dishes. Allow yourself to inhale the aromas of fresh-baked goodies and find the Zen-like qualities of sweet and sour.
PISCES
Tackle that box of pictures from your trip to Europe and dedicate the day to scrapbooking. You’ll find hours of relaxation through creatively cutting, pasting and arranging your memories. You find satisfaction in seeing your innovated ventures to the end

Tanja and Sean call their Netherlands townhouse, one of fireworks of color-  "We don't see gray, because gray is not a color but a faint state of mind.” They were living in Dubai, but chose Holland as a permanent home.
Tumblr media
The house is defined as a museum site, so every change had to be approved in advance by the local museum authorities. The same wallpaper they have in this dining room was already on the wall of their previous home in Dubai.
Tumblr media
The kitchen combines two styles: 1950s American pastel style and the warmth of English country cuisine.
Tumblr media
Tanja hunted for art deco-style lamps suitable for the space.
Tumblr media
-If there were more options in a product or surface material, we would always choose the boldest. However, sometimes I had to soften Sean's color choices a bit so that the home would also become harmonious, Tanja says.
Tumblr media
Tanja already found the blue shade of the living room in the Dubai home. The leather sofa is Sean’s treasure and was purchased on a honeymoon in New York.
Tumblr media
Sean had been bidding on antique furniture at an English auction long before the current home was acquired.
Tumblr media
The daughter’s room has a Vietnamese-French style, which Tanja describes as follows: “Yellow is the color of sun and light, and it’s easy to combine with everything. It’s good to be surrounded by yellow. ”
Tumblr media
The children's bathroom composite basins and the pool cabinet have been made to order in Poland.
Tumblr media
The bathroom budget has been balanced by choosing a white base tile for the other walls. It is enlivened by a yellow grout.
Tumblr media
The guest toilet is like a jungle. It just amazes me how some families are citizens of the world, and find decor all over the globe.

title: the fools who dream
pairing: naruino; implied sasusaku
notes: wrote this as a birthday gift for myself. rewatched la la land and it made me..... Feel Things. this movie hurts so fucking much. that 7-minute What Could've Been sequence was one of the most emotionally taxing experiences of my life
also: naruto and la la land are not mine (i wish)
—
here's to the ones who dream
foolish as they may seem
here's to the hearts that ache
here's to the mess we make
it starts at a wedding.
she; a struggling singer working on small gigs here and there, hoping to catch a break and make it big in the world someday, and
he; a clumsy busboy aspiring to be a successful chef and restaurateur one day.
they were dreamers. falling in love was not in their to do list, especially not on a mid-july day in the middle of a wedding they're not even invited to but are paid to attend to do their jobs. their hearts were too busy yearning for faraway dreams for it to start beating for another person.
but fall in love they did, anyway.
it was but a typical day. they were just meant to do their jobs, go back into the comfort of their apartments, drink booze, and watch whatever it is that's on the television until they fall asleep.
he did not plan to stumble about in the reception area, spill a few drinks, hear her singing, and ogle at her majestic form in the stage, clad in a lavender dress with her blonde hair let down to her waist that he imagines is as silky as the satin sheets on his bestfriends' apartment.
she did not expect to catch the eyes of a blond haired man with his shirt drenched with red wine, standing in the side of the ballroom looking like a lost boy, feeling like she's drifting as she falls into its ocean blue depths.
it was like straight out of a romance movie. there they stand, a few feet apart, eyes locked with each other, she was singing a love song, he looks like lovestruck fool and everything was suddenly on pause. everyone stopped dancing, bored looking aunts stopped asking for more drinks, the groomsmen frozen as they try to flirt with the bridesmaids.
it was only them, a love song, and a once upon a time with a promise of a happily ever after. a love story to tell their future children about.
it unfolds slowly at first. a few dates, flirting here and there, texting each other during work, holding hands, nighttime strolls towards ichiraku for dinner after her gig, plucked flowers for her from his apartment neighbor's plants, chaste kisses on the lips every night.
they exchange stories about their childhood, first dates gone wrong in the past, her favorite songs, his favorite food, funny anecdotes about his two bestfriends who finally got married after years of tiptoeing around each other, and why he likes the color orange so much.
he finds out how she came to be a broke singer from being a science major. she came to know he wanted to be a chef like his late father and how no one wanted to hire a college dropout with no prior work experience and who did not even go to a culinary school.
he learns that music is her soul and that she loves jazz, classical music and rock. she finds out he secretly likes taylor swift and beyonce even when he keeps insisting that he's a fan of the beatles and queen.
she tells him she will hold sold-out concerts one day and there will always be a seat in the front row reserved especially for him. he tells her he will own a restaurant one day and he will add her favorite food on the menu and name it after her.
they fall into her bed on a warm thursday night, where fixing her broken lightbulb in the bathroom, turned into a few teasing to a passionate make-out, and before they knew it, they're already bared of their clothes. they memorized each other's bodies with their hands, filled the room with sighs and words of tomorrow's promise, their names echoing in the night like a prayer. they filled each other's blank spaces, every touch felt like a fire burning through their skin, every kisses felt like what sinners go to church to. it was an unfamiliar dance yet they still manage to fall into step and meet each other halfway like they've been doing this all their lives.
they're a few steps away from love, but they're getting there anyway.
they begin to learn each other.
slowly, he took up space in her life. his jokes, his touches, boisterous laughters, the color orange, the taste of miso ramen, the calluses of his palms, and the stars in his eyes tucked into the lyrics of the love songs she wrote.
he gradually filled her heart the way his clothes slowly piled up on her sofa and ends up taking space in her closet. their toothbrush, an embarrassingly bright orange one and a soft lavender one rests inside a chipped giveaway mug. now there is a bottle of chocolate syrup beside the maple syrup, milk cartons taking the place where beer bottles once stood, vegetables replacing the unhealthy amount of bacon stocked in the fridge and her once empty cupboard were now filled with ingredients for ramen.
and if he could, he would write a volumes worth of books about how she makes him feel. but he can only tell jokes, let her take every one of his hoodie jackets, make her coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoons just the way she likes it, tuck her hair into her ear, sink into her as if his life depended on it, and touch her in places that elicits gasps and pants in a silent way of his that shouts i love you.
she adapts his weird mannerisms, he starts to mimic her slangs. he learns to cook her favorite food, she sings taylor swift songs that he will not admit he likes. he became her favorite audience in her nighttime gigs, she became his food taster even when he thinks her palate is as bland as noodles without sauce. he is now her muse and she, his favorite customer he serves his delightful dishes to every night.
he buys her a strawberry flavored ice cream and lots of tissues when she comes home from a failed audition. she attempts to cook spaghetti and meatballs for him after another failed job interview but always ends up making a mess in the kitchen which is okay because it makes him laugh.
they develop a habit and routine; she sleeps on the right side of the bed with her purple pillows, he on the left side with his orange ones. he will wake up at seven and start to cook breakfast because he will not allow her to live off on coffee alone throughout the whole day on his watch. she will wake up at eight, eat bacon and pancakes with him and kiss him goodbye when he leaves for work. a double date once a month with his brooding best friend and his charming and cheerful wife that she instantly gets along with. and they fight about ugly orange jackets and hair caught in the shower drain which follows intense hours of making love.
he's the housewife, she's the repairman. he washes the dishes, does the laundry, the cooking, the cleaning. she fixes the leaking pipes on their kitchen sink, repairs the broken chairs, and checks the cable. together, they go grocery shopping, grouts the kitchen and bathroom tiles, paints their room blue, and water the ugly plant he brought home with him one sunday afternoon. sometimes they forget to clean for weeks and leave the apartment like a dump site and that's okay.
holiday now involves a cheap boxed wine, pizza, ramen, monopoly board games, a very cheesy christmas movie playing on the tv, and dancing awkwardly on top of the upholstered brown couch they bought.
they loved each other on autumn afternoons in the pumpkin spice lattes they shared together, on winter mornings in the bundle of their scarves and coats, on summer evenings slicked with sweat and bodies moving together in a beautiful rhythm, and on spring dawns when he leaves a trail of kisses on her shoulders that makes her think that maybe it's gonna be like this forever.
in the small of her apartment, with paint peeling off the walls, scratched papers containing her sprawled handwritings flying everywhere, mugs with cold coffee on top her piano, and an ugly plant standing beside the ugly couch is where they found their home and their refuge. it is messy and small but in this place, she is the best singer songwriter in the world that has ever lived and he is a world renowned chef praised by every critics. in this place, their dreams are within reach and everything seems possible.
and this is how it falls apart:
reality starts to take a hold of their life. they are nearing their thirties and he realizes that part time jobs isn't going to cut it anymore. he accepts a job offer from an old friend for a work that pays more.
she gets an offer from a recording company in new york and for the first time, she is going to reject a chance to make it big in the world because she doesn't want to leave him. she doesn't tell him any of this.
like how they started, it unfolds slowly.
- dinners started to get cold.
- a series of apologies and excuses that only gets old.
- she loses her favorite audience in her nighttime gigs.
- mornings of waking up to the left side of the bed already made. cold nights of preparing to sleep with the left side of the bed still made.
- he loses his passion for cooking and starts to give up.
- she stops singing for him. the piano in the living room started to get dusty.
- arguments reserved for tomorrow because they're too exhausted to fight.
- waking up one day and not recognizing the person they share the bed with anymore. even the faces they see when they look into mirror is unfamiliar to them.
- a major fight breaking out one cold friday night.
- cold, harsh words coming out of their mouths. words they cannot take back.
- she finds herself writing songs about heartbreak one day.
- the food he cooks started to taste bitter in his mouth.
- their home started to get cramped with unresolved anger and untold secrets.
- "we're hurting each other, aren't we."
- "i'm sorry."
- "i'm sorry, too."
they were sandcastles, meant to stand beautifully after being built so carefully, but is always meant to be crushed in the end.
how unfortunate it is, he thinks, for things to end. to invest so much into something you believe would last knowing it fell apart with your own doing. to have a taste of something perfect only for it to slip away from your grasp in a blink of an eye.
how unfortunate it is, she thinks, for packed boxes, awkward voice messages, a wilting ugly plant, ripped off scratched papers, deleted numbers, habits to unlearn, regret for all the hurtful things said to one another, and her sitting on the floor wearing one of his shirts and trying not to miss him be the culmination of a year spent in love.
this is how they say goodbye:
they sit at a park bench near her apartment and watch the people going about in their lives for the day, not knowing that today marks the end of something beautiful.
he finds out about the offer she rejected and in his left hand is a plane ticket to new york. in his right hand is her hands and her heart. in his eyes are a million apologies and a promise of a love that is never going to fade away.
she thanks him for not giving up on her. in her smile is an assurance that it's okay. in the forehead kiss that lasted too long says that he is her great love. in the way she rests her head against his shoulder tells him that she will never forget.
and in their goodbyes are oaths of achieving their dreams no matter what the odds are.
it ends at a wedding.
she; a successful singer, millions of copies of her two albums already sold around the world, and is currently on a world tour, and
he; an owner of five-star restaurant, praised by various critics, and is always packed every night.
she sings at a wedding, this time not as a job she was paid to do, but as a gift to an old friend. and it is not just a typical day. today is a special december afternoon where they both see each other again for the first time in five years.
there is no accident in the way he turns his head and seeks her gaze. there she stands on the platform, clad in a velvet red gown, and still looking perfect as the first time he saw her six years ago. he feels the weight of the world lifted off his shoulders upon seeing the way she moves that he recognizes with familiarity and upon hearing a voice that used to make his heart sing.
as she starts to sing, she deliberately locks eyes with the man who captured her heart six years ago. there he sits on his assigned seat in front of the reception area, looking as handsome and ruffled as she remembered, and so different from the lost boy who once stood in one side of the dancefloor with his white shirt drenched with red wine.
this time, there were no pause. this time, the background and everyone around them started to fade. this time, time didn't stop for them but it moved backwards to some time six years ago and forward to a very different future. a past where nothing went wrong, where mistakes are easily fixed, and there were no words to take back. a future where they were the ones getting married in this very day.
hidden in the song she sings are a million alternate realities, a montage of what-ifs, echoes of what-could-have-beens, and the promise of a future long gone.
lost in the depths of each other's eyes, they can picture it. a story where there were no hurdles and obstacles to overcome. it starts on a mid-july day in the middle of a wedding, where everything is perfect and their dreams are not so far away. in this story, he didn't take his friend's job offer and she tells him about new york. in this story, their love only grew stronger and nothing kept them apart. she catches a big break and he goes with her and both of them achieved their dream together in another country. she holds sold out concerts at big stadiums, and there he is on the front row, on a seat reserved especially for him. featured in the restaurant he opened were his father's recipes and a weird pizza flavor named after her. the new apartment they moved to was bigger but just as messy and filled with love than ever. the ugly plant he bought was still alive and her cheap piano didn't gather dust. in this story, there were no habits to unlearn, no happy memories to regret, no cold nights to write sad songs about.
a story started with a wedding when they were still struggling dreamers and a story that ended with their wedding when they finally achieve their dreams and the only thing left for them to chase after was their happily ever after.
the song ends and they both come back to reality. and in this reality, it was another person who sits on the front row of her concerts instead of him. a different name and a different favorite food were written on the menu of his restaurant. and this is not their wedding.
this is his wedding.
this is nothing like a romance movie. this time it wasn't just the two of them in the scene. this time includes him and his bride sitting together with their hands clasped and looking all kinds of perfect, an engagement ring on her left hand that clasps the mic, and smiles from each other that says thank you for the wonderful journey they shared six years ago.
it was a once upon time gone wrong, but they did get their happy ending anyway.
it wasn't a love story. it was a story of passion and struggles and people you meet along the way that will always have a special place in your heart.
a story to tell future dreamers about.
and here's to the fools who dream
crazy as they may seem
here's to the hearts that break
here's to the mess we make

A Crown Heights Duo Remodels Their Smallest Spaces
A dream shower and walk-in closet complete this Crown Heights closet and bathroom renovation
“After” photos by Miao Jiaxin for Sweeten
Homeowners: Kate + Max posted their bathroom and closet renovation on Sweeten
Where: Crown Heights in Brooklyn, New York
Primary renovation: A new bathroom layout and combining closets in a 610-square-foot apartment
Sweeten general contractor
Sweeten’s role: Sweeten matches home renovation projects with vetted general contractors, offering advice, support, and financial protection—at no cost to the homeowner.
Written in partnership with Sweeten homeowners Kate + Max
Before: Finding the right time to renovate
We’ve all walked into homes where two different sets of ideas are in play. This renovation was part of a quest for cohesion. We’d established an aesthetic when we’d updated the kitchen two years before, and we were now putting in a bathroom and closet we could love. The old set of ideas included a showerhead on the long side of the bathtub and pitch-dark storage spaces. We were not sad to see them go.

65929-Max-Bathroom-Before-03
We are Kate, a creative director for a women’s wellness startup, Max, a data analyst at a tech firm, and Lenny, a female Pitbull/Rat Terrier mix. We live in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in a 1926 co-op building. We’re first-time homeowners of a 610-square-foot one-bedroom apartment. We purchased in January 2016 as first-time buyers. We didn’t change the place until 2019 when we renovated the kitchen.
We planned to wait to continue renovating, but the combination of being home due to Covid-19 and having few opportunities to spend money meant that we wanted a nicer place and we accelerated our savings plan. We decided to go for it this year and renovate the bathroom and our closet as a single project.
Swapping out the tub for a shower
Remodeling the 35-square-foot bathroom was a style choice, but also one of function. In the existing room, neither the floor nor the walls were level. We hated that the shower head was in the middle of the wall on the tub’s long side. We wanted a modern stand-up shower with a glass door instead of the step-in tub and wraparound shower curtain. The closet redo made sense to tack on because of its proximity to the bathroom. We wanted to combine two small adjacent closets—one accessible from the bedroom, the other from the hallway—into a single large one. Neither closet had electrical wiring, so finding our things was a challenge. We knew we could net more storage if we merged them into one large closet.
This was easily the most challenging phase of the project, since we’d left Brooklyn on a road trip and were far away when the contractor discovered the problem. We didn’t need to worry.
After: Creating a whole new bathroom layout
We started in the bathroom. We rearranged the whole bathroom, so this was not a simple “rip and replace.” Moving the shower to the back wall meant relocating the toilet and reconfiguring the plumbing proved necessary. Our biggest questions were about the unknowns. In a nutshell, here’s what we learned: You can’t prepare for what’s behind a wall or under the floor. You carry out the demolition and hope to get lucky.
We’d decided we wanted white subway tile with a dark gray grout on the walls. The floor tiles had a distressed texture in dark gray. The vanity’s light wood finish matches our kitchen cabinets, and it offers tons of storage even though it’s only a 24-inch unit. The toilet search was more challenging than expected since we had specific size requirements, but eventually, we found one we liked.
The contractor handles the discovery under the subfloor
We’d heard plenty of nightmares about people moving plumbing in New York City bathrooms and hoped our fate might be different, but it wasn’t. Having completed most of the demolition, the contractors lifted the floor tile. Beneath the visible layer, they discovered two additional layers of tile. Once the subfloor was exposed, it was clear it had been compromised, both by years of trapped moisture and the weight of those three tile layers.
The co-op’s engineer brought onsite recommended pouring a new concrete slab, which added expense and impacted our schedule. This was easily the most challenging phase of the project since we’d left Brooklyn on a road trip and were far away when the contractor discovered the problem. We didn’t need to worry. Our contractor worked with the building’s engineer to pour the new slab to the required specifications.
Smooth communication with their contractor
Our Sweeten contractors provided us with updates via an online project-management tool that helped with communication throughout the job. The team used the tool to share photo and video updates. It helped to keep everyone in sync and organized. That platform really streamlined the conversation regarding every aspect of the job. The bathroom came together exactly as we’d hoped. We’re thrilled with the new storage, including an inset bottle nook in the shower. And the rain showerhead combined with our building’s incredible water pressure makes for an immersive experience every morning.
Combining closets for a larger one
The expanded bedroom closet came next. The contractors removed the wall separating the two smaller closets in order to merge them; we kept the door on the bedroom side. I love being able to see things in the closet, thanks to the increased space, and the addition of wiring let us install good lighting. For the shelving, we took a hybrid approach, buying all of the parts separately. The white shelves are typical closet shelves, but the racks are meant for garage storage. We can finally find our clothes!
This closet hack would also mean addressing the hallway with trim and paint. On that side, the contractors closed the door opening and painted the wall, where we later created a gallery wall for art and photos. The previous door trim was missing chunks of wood (likely from people moving big objects in/out of rooms and banging into the door frame.) It had also been painted a million times and was generally an eyesore. We knew replacing the door and window trim would go a long way towards refreshing the space. The red light fixture provides a nice pop of color.
Their Sweeten contractors: the right renovation partners
This was a much larger project than we thought we’d be taking on this year, but it worked out beautifully. Our Sweeten contractors were transparent about billing, supplying us with perfectly itemized invoices. They were terrific problem solvers, with elegant design sense and ideas that enhanced our final results. We love our new apartment!
Thank you, Max and Kate, for sharing your bathroom and closet renovation with us!

The bathroom tile stickers waterproof. Supposed in light of the fact that it sprinkles back at you if the sink floods… or on the other hand something. By and by, we’re happier to have one for those occasions when you wash your hands and afterward your hands are sopping wet, and when you go to kill the spigot the water dribbles all over the place. Washing your face, as well, water simply gets wherever in one way or another.
See, the fact of the matter is that in case you’re searching for an approach to make your bathroom look somewhat fresher out of the box new, the backsplash is a gold mine. Consider it: the two things individuals take a gander at the most in the bathroom are the toilet and the sink. In this way, pleasant, new bathroom tile cover up stickers can enable your bathroom to put its best self forward when individuals drop by. Like, new tile, new paint-stuff like that makes the room look inexplicably cleaner.
Or then again, in the event that you disdain the organization, do it for yourself! You’re the person who needs to gaze at it constantly. Another bathroom tile transfers can make your handwashing life a great deal more energizing. Additionally, it’s practical it shields your back wall from water harm.
Try not to stress, this isn’t a stunt to make you void your financial balance. (However, uh, in case you’re keen on that, would we be able to send you our Venmo?) You can makeover your bathroom backsplash genuinely modest, contingent upon what material you pick. So we should get to it-here are some bathroom backsplash thoughts to get you on your way!
Tiling
No, you don’t need to get out your grout essentially. Free tiles from the home improvement shop will require some TLC, indeed, however, others come in strip and-stick structures! See, the various kinds of tiles!
Mathematical Tiling
On the off chance that you need to go to the mathematical course, what you’re going to wanna do is search for a tile that decorates. Welcome back to secondary school math, huh? On the off chance that you need intense training, that is shapes that line up genuine pleasant. Squares, jewels (like the photograph), hexagons, octagons, and so on. It’s extremely simple on the eyes how all the shapes just fit together.
Mosaic Tiling
Presently, mosaic tiling you will have some good times with. This is the place where we get into blending materials, colors, and so on The cool thing about mosaics is that you have that piece of inventiveness to your plan. No tile man at a shop will disclose to you how to organize your tiles-you will pick! You could cause an image, to randomize your tiles for a more changed look, or do an example like 5 white shapes and afterward a hued 3D square.
Tram Tiling
Tram tiles are fun, particularly in light of the fact that they have a culture to them! Did you realize that Subway tiles are so named in light of the fact that they were initially intended for the New York Subway in 1904? The ones in your bathroom are going to look considerably less filthy, however, don’t stress over that.
Tumblr media
Paint + Stickers
Alright, perhaps you would prefer not to purchase and stick on a lot of little tiles. What about creation it resembles you got another bathroom backsplash all things being equal? Truth is stranger than fiction! Another layer of paint is an incredible enchantment stunt and can make any room look fresh out of the box new. Paint is obvious you’ll most likely simply need to paint the back wall behind your sink. Tile paints are ideal on the off chance that you have tiles, yet you could likewise do matte paint. Be cautioned, however on the off chance that you end up doing a matte paint, you will need to close it a short time later so you can clean them.
Stickers are wonderful, however. Can’t suggest stickers enough. They’re similarly as fun when you’re three as when you’re 30, it’s mysterious. Presently, stickers for bathroom backsplashes arrive in a couple of various assortments. As we previously examined, there is a rendition of various tile designs that are made to strip and stick onto your wall. Nonetheless, that is not your lone sticker alternative. There are additional stickers that arrive in a moving structure, sort of like wallpaper. They come in both vinyl plans and tile plans, so you can arrange what you like!
Wood
Regardless of whether you’re quicker on an inconspicuous piece of wood to line that back wall or picking in for a wood framing look, wood could be your new most loved backsplash! Simply remember to close it from dampness a little water-based stain will go far. Also, we mean you should put some stain on it, genuinely remember that progression.
Tumblr media
Make Something New
The extraordinary thing about backsplashes is that on the off chance that you need to get creative with it, you can. The situation is simply to shield your back wall from water harm. Along these lines, on the off chance that you like, you can utilize any material as a backsplash! Indeed, a few materials may be more appropriate than others, yet in the event that you pick something whimsical you can generally cover it in modge podge, or in any case, set it so it’ll be as powerful as it is imaginative.
We spoke before about mosaics, yet you don’t simply need to make them out of tile. One thing you could do is make a mosaic out of what’s lying near! Console keys, pennies, jar pearls, wine stops, scrabble tiles, and so on! It’ll be a fun, imaginative undertaking that you will appreciate for quite a while. Also Read:- Keep These Tips in Mind When Looking for Tile Transfers Stickers
Or on the other hand, in the event that you need to get the family in question, why not make a day out of it? You can purchase white tiles, paint them together, introduce, and presto! An exceptional backsplash that will make you grin each time you see it.
Noteworthy Mentions
For this romantic, we generally attempted to adhere to things that should be possible just, or basically enough. In any case, you should realize that the rundown doesn’t end there. In case you’re feeling courageous, you could likewise attempt a solid backsplash. It’s like grout in that you’ll have to gauge and blend it up yourself, so be cautioned. In any case, if that doesn’t startle you, take the plunge! It’s a solid material, and it’s truly simple to resurface in the event that you need it.

Install subway Tiles As a Focal Point in Your Kitchen
Subway tiles are a great addition to any kitchen or bathroom redesign. In this article we will explain how subway tiles can make a strong design statement in any room, but particularly in the bathroom. The first design inspiration for subway tiles came from the art world in the mid-twentieth century, when artists began to use large slabs of marble that were set into glass to create large picture displays in expensive museums around the country.
subway tiles can also be used as a design element in your bathroom if you are looking to add a splash of color to your backsplash area. How much is subway tile per square foot? Prices for white subway tile begin at around $2 a square feet for standard tile and rise to more than $50 for handcrafted artisan tile. One square foot contains sixteen 3 by 6-inch subway tiles, giving you a surface area of one square foot multiplied by sixteen to give you one liter of tile area. This translates to one ton of grout or about twelve cups of grout.
There is no end to the applications for subway tiles, as they are also used in modern kitchens like the New York City subway system. subway tiles provide a quick way to apply wallpaper to the backsplash of a kitchen. Wallpapering a subway tile backsplash is easy to do, all you need is a grout roller and a sponge and a few minutes for a professional project. Applying wallpapering material over a subway tile backsplash is an easy way to give a unique, rustic look to your kitchen. It can also be used in a tile floor repair job if you have a tile on the floor already and simply want a new look.
Tumblr media
Using subway tiles to paint a white kitchen countertop or just to make a colorful splash in a black and white kitchen is a simple, inexpensive way to add some interest to a dull kitchen. Applying subway tiles over white kitchen tile grout gives you a durable, yet beautiful, white surface that can be used for baking, cooking, or anything else you want to do with white paint. You can create a beautiful design by using different colors of subway tiles and grout. You could even create a geometric design with alternating yellow and black tiles. Whatever you decide to use subway tiles for, you will not go unsatisfied with the result.
The focal point of any design should draw the eye straight to it. If you have a small kitchen and want it to stand out as much as possible, a subway tile backsplash would be the perfect focal point to set the decor apart from the rest of your kitchen. You could then build the other elements of the kitchen around that central focal point.
Another popular subway tile backsplash idea is to use a running bond style border. A running bond style border consists of three tiles, one each of which is straight and in place and a border tile that runs along the entire border. The idea behind a running bond style border is to create a smooth and seamless transition between the straight tiles and the rest of the grout. You can install the border at the same time you install the straight tiles to ensure a smooth and seamless fit. Having a running bond style grout border allows you to create a focal point that is seamless from wall to wall, while still letting people know that the tiles are part of the kitchen's overall design.
