Just today, there was a crusty old fuck on the Internet saying that punk was supposed to be anti-establishment, right? Well it is, and actually, I can think of nothing more anti-establishment than young women, than people of color, and the queer community. So what I want to say to you, if you are one of those people in those subsets, there is space for you here now. Did you hear me? There’s space for you now. We love you and we love being a part of this scene. And we’re gonna keep doing whatever we can do alongside our friends and our peers in the scene to make it feel safe for every single one of you out there, because it does not feel good to feel unwelcome. It does not feel good to be talked down to. So if you’re here tonight, thank you. Thanks for watching us.

Life has been super busy/chaotic lately, but I am so excited to see Becca and Hayley’s relationship out in the open. I kept up with the rumors for a long time and just recently, back around January, started listening to Scrubbing In. BT and HK seem like such sweethearts and I can’t wait for Hayley’s appearance on the podcast to hear her side of the story! I’m so happy for them and the fact that Becca is finally at peace with going public and understands the magnitude of that kind of representation. I also really feel single rn…

In Taylor world, I’m going to clown that we’ll get “Sparks Fly (Taylor’s Version)” on May 27th:

Mainly because it’s Liz’s birthday, so I’d love to see “Sparks Fly (TV)” on Friday for Tayliz crack theory reasons.

I would also be okay with “Let’s Go (Battle)” featuring Liz… (their voices together are magical and “Better Man” was practically a feature and I wish it had been credited as such, imo). What a perfect birthday gift for an old friend that would be…

Also, apparently some people think Taylor will make a cameo on Grey’s Thursday night. I’m not holding my breath on that one… (I haven’t watched Grey’s since my 2 favorite characters, Arizona and April, were written off the show and probably won’t watch it this week). That would be a good time to generate more buzz and drop a single, though… just saying.

With how things have been lately, I’ve given up on actually making/believing any “realistic” predictions about any Taylor-related projects… so why not dream big with it…

Happy 27th anniversary to Tomb Raider!

On the 25th of October, twenty seven years ago, a little game called Tomb Raider, featuring Lara Croft was released in Europe for the Sega Saturn, and changed gaming FOREVER!

The world was introduced to British archaeologist Lara Croft, who travels around the world searching for lost artifacts and infiltrating dangerous tombs and ruins. Lara Croft became a pop culture sensation. You probably can't fathom the amount of brand power and popularity she had in the late 90s (I can't either because I was a baby) but she was treated like an actual celebrity. Getting featured on non-gaming magazine covers, getting advertisement deals with brands like Lucozade, Visa, Seat, Jeep, Ducati and many others and even having her own publicist! She also technically toured with U2 as her visuals were heavily on their Pop Mart tour! She is the most successful woman to ever hit video games and every female video game protagonist created after her gets inspired and compared to her for good reason.

Exploration, solving puzzles, navigating hostile environments filled with traps, and fighting enemies are the three core pillars of the franchise, and although not credited as much as it should, the original game did tons to innovate 3D gaming (choke on a dick Mario 3D) and essentially jump started the action adventure genre, which it held a monopoly on until the Inception of Uncharted (which also died but Queen is still here).

Furthermore, various award winning actresses have been hired to portray Lara across various media, from Keeley Hawes and Camilla Luddington in the games, to Minnie Driver and, soon, Hayley Atwell in animated series to Oscar-winning Alicia Vikander and, perhaps more importantly, Angelina Jolie in films.

Not to discredit any of the other actresses, or Lara's own brand power before the 2001 film, but Angelina's portrayal has been ingrained in many people's minds and did a lot to both further boost Lara's own brand power, as well as permanently ingrain Angie as one of the prominent action heroines in Hollywood. It's no wonder tons of people dressing up as Lara or other media paying homages to Lara and Tomb Raider use Angie's all black outfit and French braid look from the first movie, neither of which are actually part of Lara's in-game look so far 🤣

Although it stumbled a bit in the early 2000s, with games like Chronicles and Angel of Darkness tarnishing the brand, the game has been reimagined, both with a soft reboot in 2006 and a full scale one in 2013 and has continued to evolve and adapt to the industry, managing to stay relevant for almost three decades now! For this reason, Tomb Raider had sold over 95 million copies worldwide by 2022, while the entire franchise generated close to 1.2 billion dollars in revenue by 2002. The series has generally been met with critical acclaim, and Lara Croft has become one of the most recognisable video game protagonists, winning accolades and earning places on the Guinness World Records.

The future looks bright as we have a new animated series, a new game, a remaster of the original three games and a whole ass multiverse of media coming up, hopefully managing to please fans of all iterations of the games as well as the character herself.

Lara Croft has achieved mainstream media popularity like of which only a handful of other video game characters, like Sonic and Mario have only achieved. Her own individual brand power has consistently been a selling point for the series, but the games themselves continue to captivate the interest, and I hope to see them continue to succeed where others failed for many many more years to come!

rowan celeste foster was born may 27th, 1996. she’s the oldest of two, a baby sister coming to the scene in 1999.

her family is extremely close. they’ve been in peach hollow their whole lives. she grew up in a crowded house on blueberry boulevard, crammed in with her mother, father, sister, maternal grandmother and maternal grandfather. rowan never knew peace or privacy growing up – it just wasn’t possible with that many people which has really contributed to her somewhat isolated adulthood

her mother is a charge nurse at peach hollow general, working on the emergency room floor. her father is a retired car salesman. her grandparents moved into the house when her sister was born in order to help take care of the girls while their parents worked full time. rowan is especially grateful for their care, because she feels like she’d be a little more sour had she been raised by absent parents.

growing up, she shared a room with her younger sister. they told each other everything because they had no choice not to. they both developed an interest in make up and music at very young ages, but rowan particularly took to those things while maci took more interest in sports. when rowan was gifted her first ukulele at age 6, maci got her first basketball. they are polar opposites, but maci was the only person rowan really confided in as a child and an adolescent.

she’d always been rather moody. tantrums and fits were nearly unavoidable. her self esteem lacked before she even had a chance to develop any confidence. she was always the try hard, the girl who stood out because she was just a little different, the emotional one, the one the other kids didn’t want to mess with, not because she’d fight back, but because she would absolutely lose it. there were countless times where rowan ended up in the guidance counselor’s office, waiting on her grandmother to show up and bring her home. that was the beginning of their problems.

her mental health really started to decline in her mid teenage years. she spent hours upon hours in her room, writing songs, playing guitar, practicing make up looks – she’d go days without sleeping and snap at anyone who crossed her path. she got into screaming matches with everyone in the house, only to find herself crying in her bed for the next few days. she started missing days at a time from school, while her artistry thrive, the rest of her crumbled. her grades, all of it.

eventually, this resulted in her parents yanking her out of peach hollow high and putting her in counseling, which lead her to a psychiatrist and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder at the age of 17. while it made sense, she dreaded taking the medications. they numbed everything. her writing suffered, and while her moods weren’t swinging from the trees anymore, she feared that this empty feeling was worse.

she finished her high school diploma in homeschooling with her grandmother while maci went on to thrive in school. the attention shifted to her, and rowan couldn’t really blame them. she turned 18 and started performing in clubs, bars, and anywhere she could get in. ps her voice is a mix of bishop briggs & mary lambert. the thrill of performing to small crowds sucked her in. she began to gain an even smaller following on social media, mainly the locals following her. every once in a while she’ll book a show in atlanta and she’ll make the long drive just to sing in front of a bit of a larger crowd. she’ll gain a few followers from those shows, but this still isn’t her main source of income.

most of her money comes from the make up artistry she does through pop of peach. she doesn’t go in every day, but when someone has an event scheduled or needs their make up done for a dance or something, she’s there. she tries to spread things out bc she’s always late lmao and finds it hard to stick to a schedule

she was doing so well for a few years, even moved out of her parents’ house and into an apartment at the towers. that’s where she really found herself, made some real friends and built relationships that were good for her. however, she missed a few doctor’s appointments and was discharged from her psychiatrist’s office. she went off meds, and for a few weeks it was fine. when she ran out of meds, the next few weeks were okay as well. it was when every single drop of medication had drained from her body that things got bad.

rowan was missing appointments she scheduled at pop of peach. she was spending far too much time out at nights, giving in to alcohol for the most part. she tried not to touch any drugs, but drinking became a nightly thing. she’d perform, then spend the rest of the night partying with whoever she could find at the venue.

one night in atlanta after a particularly shaky performance, rowan found herself in a dark place and simply went into the women’s bathroom to calm down, but police say they found her laying flat on the ground, refusing to respond to anyone. she vaguely remembers the end of the manic episode, but it did land her in the emergency room for a change in mental status.

much to her chagrin, they admitted her overnight before transporting her to skyland trail, a mental health facility in atlanta. she spend about two and a half months there getting medications regulated and learning new coping mechanisms. she was discharged about two weeks ago and finally made it back to peach hollow and her apartment.

she’d lead everyone other than her family and maybe one or two other people that she was away on a musician’s retreat, but really, was in inpatient treatment.

she’s currently working full time as a make up artist at pop of peach and performing when she can, but doesn’t really go outside of peach hollow

fun facts & personality

rowan despises small talk. conversations about the weather or political climate don’t stimulate her and she gets snarky pretty easily. it isn’t that she wants to come off rude or unapproachable, but nine times out of ten, small talk is fake and she feels as though she doesn’t have the time or energy to indulge in it. ask her about the sky or some shit. she won’t shut up

she has a tendency to overshare,  aside from what’s been going on in the past few months. her lips are sealed tight about that. however, she’s open to talking about her mental health and is a big advocate for erasing the stigma. this makes rowan a very good listener and a huge supportive presence for anyone struggling. she’s the mom friend, and no matter what time of day or night, if someone says they need an ear, she’ll go to them. she knows what it’s like to be alone.

despite her past and her demons, rowan finds a way to put on a smile. it might often be snarky or sarcastic, but rarely is it insincere. she’s an empath and feels everything so very deeply, but can easily put it away when necessarily.

her apartment is her safe haven. she rarely has company. it isn’t really her thing. she prefers to go to other people’s places. she has her record collection proudly displayed on her living room wall, all the plants you can imagine, incense burning whenever she’s home, and a scottish fold munchkin cat named loonette after her favorite childhood tv show, the big comfy couch. she has hopes to get another cat named molly to match. you know, because we’re all clowns !

she takes great pride in her instagram. it sounds superficial, but often times, rowan will post a good picture and then link to her next show in hopes that somebody will come based on that. while she does have a passion for make up and a second instagram for it, ultimately, she’d like for there to come a time where she can live solely on the money she makes through music

Personality

There isn’t a person alive who has met Astrid who hasn’t associated her with the term ‘free spirit.’ She typically hates being told what to do but she’s calm enough to know when to bow down and admit when someone else is right. For a hybrid, Astrid is incredibly kind and soft hearted, she can’t stand to see people suffer and would always do anything to help. The years haven’t been kind to her own heart and she lives with a lot of bottled in misery and pain. For the sake of appearances though you’ll nearly always see her with a bubbly smile on her face. Astrid is loyal above most things but she’s also quite a lost soul, though unless you really know her you wouldn’t guess as much.

Past

Born into the Appalachian Mountains Pack, Astrid had a sturdy upbringing with parents, her younger sister, Aila, and a pack of werewolves who were devoted to one another. They were a tight-knit group, always having each other’s backs through thick and thin, no matter what, no exceptions. Being a teenager separated from the real world was pretty easy, when she knew nothing about what she was missing. Her pack was secluded but not completely out of sync with the real world, she just didn’t care much for the big city lights. Astrid was a free, mischievous soul, always finding something to laugh about, or pulling pranks on her pack with her best friend, Mason. There wasn’t a dark bone in her body, she knew nothing of cruelty, until the day hunters captured her, her family, and a few beloved members of the pack. That day changed everything; her parents along with half her pack had been slaughtered. Her father had fallen at her own forced hand which quickly became something she would never recover from or forgive herself for.

In the following years, Astrid lead the remaining back the best she could, again, with the help of Mason. It was only when Hayley and Tyler showed up in the mountains, finally, it felt like a light had been lit. She watched the way Hayley and a few members of the pack guided him through his transitions. Tyler was half wolf, half vampire, and he had figured out a way to break his sire bond to the one who created him. In Astrid’s eyes, Tyler became the living embodiment of what she wanted to be… Powerful, more powerful than a wolf could ever be… Strong enough to fight, and win… Strong enough so she and her sister could live without fear. It was a long time after Tyler left, that Astrid left too, in search of his maker, Klaus Mikaelson. She had heard all the stories, but they didn’t matter to her. If she had to do as he requested, it felt like a small price to pay in return for her little sisters’ safety. It took months for her and Mason to track him down, and when they did, they were almost like a fish out of water on the hybrids doorstep. Though, she kept it short, sweet and straight to the point… Telling Klaus they wanted to be hybrid’s and would follow his lead, if he gave her an extra dose of human doppelganger blood so she could turn her sister also.

It seemed to happen so fast, and Astrid was struggling majorly with her bloodlust, but she forced herself to control it, so she could return to the pack and collect her sister. Though, when she told Aila what she had done, and what she wanted her to turn into, in order to be safer, she did not expect a refusal. Aila didn’t want to be a hybrid, and she did not want to leave the pack, which ultimately, left Astrid heartbroken. She stayed to break her sire bond and tried over the weeks to convince Aila to change her mind, but it was no good. Aila didn’t turn, and the new hybrids knew they couldn’t stay in the mountains with their need for blood and so they returned to Klaus without her. Laying her cards on the table, she gave back the doppelganger blood and told him they had broken the sire bond. But, that it was because they wanted to be loyal out of their own free will, rather than being forced, and she asked for a chance to prove it.

Swept up in a world she had never known, adjusting was difficult and only made easier because she had Mason by her side. When Hope Mikaelson came along Astrid took it upon herself to be more involved, if only to try and protect the innocent from the cruel things her father was capable of. Astrid would fight anyone and everyone to the death if it meant protecting Hope; much like she would do for all her friends and family. Speaking of, Aila came back into her life and then Adrian, her half brother and his daughter Piper also found their way to the small town. Astrid was happy to have her family around her but it wasn’t until Alice fell into her life that she realised something she’d been denying ever since she became a hybrid. She’d made a huge mistake. Having power hadn’t taken away her fear like she hoped and nor had it ensured her ability to stop those she loves from being hurt or killed. She hated being a hybrid and she knew there was also no way she could ever admit it. Earlier this year (2019) with the help of a hunter she’d fallen hopelessly in love with; the pair rescued Alice from some vile vampire creatures who had forced the young child to commit traumatic crimes. Ever since, Astrid has been working hard on building a better life for the young girl and it’s easy to say that she’s also one of the few reasons she’s still gripping onto her sanity. The hunter died unexpectedly and ever since, Astrid has been crumbling more than ever, though she’s mostly hiding it well.

Present

Astrid owns the local dog shelter and works there most days when she’s not helping out her friends or spending time with Alice. Even though her heart is broken she’s trying her best to keep her head up, if only for the sake of the child. Distractions come easy and she finds that a big help to stop her mind going down a miserable, reckless path. Astrid is focusing on her work and her family though lately, she has been spending more time by herself because pretending to be okay is absolutely exhausting. Somehow, she still has hope for the future. It couldn’t possibly hurt this much forever, right?

Connections

Aila King

Sister. Since they reconnected the two have had way more downs than ups and though there is no more secrets between them, their relationship still suffers greatly. They’re not close but one day Astrid hopes that will be different. That’s if Aila ever decides to return to Mystic Falls after she packed up and left everything and everyone behind.

Good Girl, Bad Girl, Wicked Girl by Piper Lawson Book Review

First, let me preface this by saying I would never have read this except for Piper Lawson and her Off-Limits series. Piper has this ability to pull me into her books from the first couple of pages. Usually, it takes me a while to get into a book. But with Piper’s writing, I’m hooked right away.

A rocker-romance never would have appealed to me because I’m not a huge fan of rock and roll. I am a fan of music, though, so I think that’s one of the reasons I loved this series so much. I’m so glad I started the Wicked series. It was Wickedly good! Ha, sorry, silly pun.

I never would have guessed that I’d consume the first 3 books in this series over 4 days (and this was while I was working on crazy work deadlines, btw).

It. Was. That. Good.

I couldn’t get enough of Jax and Haley and their wild and incredible love story.

Piper did an amazing job at setting up their back story in Good Girl, developing their love story in Bad Girl, and then rewarded readers with a jam-packed ending in Wicked Girl!

The chemistry between Jax and Haley is insane.

FREAKING INSANE.

I loved their slow-burning romance and the twists and turns that went with it. Piper really kept me guessing during each book and honestly, I would have been hooked either way because I loved the characters so much.

I wonder why he’s here. I wonder what took him so long. I wonder what he’s going to do to me when I get off this stage.

Jax is such an amazing hero in the book. I expected him to be this annoying rocker who was into drugs and alcohol.

Not in the slightest.

He may come across as a grump and asshole at the beginning but not for long. Underneath that façade was a gentleman who took care of everyone at the expense of his own happiness. It’s quite satisfying when Jax finally lets go of the reigns and goes for it not only with Haley but in other areas of his life too. I love to sing and music is a part of me too, so I connected with Jax in that way.

But really Haley and Jax really complement one another in the books and throughout the three books, the development of their love story was pure perfection.

This girl’s my shadow. We’re bound together by a thread that won’t let go even though we’re opposites in so many ways—she’s bright, I’m dark; she’s new, I’m jaded; she’s curious, I’m closed off. But from the second I noticed her, I can’t unsee her.

“I can’t be what you want.” I expect her to protest or pull away. Instead she smiles, the tiniest gesture in the blackness of the car, but I feel it in every part of me. “You already are.”

I loved how Hayley was so independent and I respected the decisions she made throughout the books, especially at the end of the second book. I think I would have done the same. As a character, she really grew from the first to the last book. Even though she’s only 24 at the end, I feel like in a way she was acting like she was in her 30s. It makes sense though considering she had to learn how to be alone. She was totally a kick-ass heroine who followed her dreams and wasn’t afraid to show off her tech talents.

I realized being alone is good sometimes. Because no matter what happens, there are times in your life when all you have is you. And you’ve got to learn to have your own back.

A few more thoughts:

The band members were fun to get to know as well as Haley’s BFF Serena and her “skunk” dog named Scrunchie. Haha, that name cracks me up! Oh, and I love sweet Annie.

You have to go into this series not expecting a lot of stream in the first book. It’s definitely a slow-burn romance but I didn’t mind since I connected with the characters so much. Stick with it and then in the second book, you get a ton of steam and then some. I treated the 3 books as a package deal and didn’t mind the cliffhangers. It anything it kept me even more interested!

I love it when a hero has a nickname for the heroine, and in this series, we get two! Hales and Babysitter. Super cute and it was fun reading about Haley’s reaction to both nicknames.

I have one more book to go – Wicked Forever, and I can’t wait to read Annie and Tyler’s story. Whohoo, I’m so happy that I got to experience this incredible series at the start of the new year!
