honestly i think after mithrun retires from the canaries flamela will end up taking his position, but, like. a relative of the royal family in that high of a position in the military is really risky during a succession crisis. so i think the queen would demote her before she gets too much sway with her subordinates. which she of course, would be really normal about. she would not be frustrated at all. not even a little. she’d be really chill and cool with it. wouldn’t even get a bit angry

Translated information regarding Flamela's squad, Part one
Decided to go through the pages on Flamela's squad from the complete adventurer's bible and translate them myself, since the ones I've seen floating around looked dubious at best. I've included transcriptions of (most of) the original text for anyone who would like to analyze it themselves. It's incredibly long, so I'm putting it under the cut.
Part two here.
Flamela
Name: Flamela of the house of Sorn Birthday/Age: September 23, 170 years old. Race/Gender: Elf, Female Family: Father, Mother, Younger brother Physique: Height approximately 140cm, BMI 22 Favorite food: Dumplings Dislikes: Roe Cause of first death: Poisoned by a basilisk
The vice-captain of the Canaries with obsidian skin and silver hair that is considered to be "proof of true royalty". While she is a distant blood relative to the queen, she has a one-sided hatred for the queen, as she lost (through death) her older twin sister, who was adopted by the queen*. She succeeded the retired Milsiril as vice-captain, but is obliquely kept away from dangerous sites due to her relation to the queen. She has a short temper**, and especially doesn't hide her resentment for the fact that Mithrun, who is unable to even take care of his daily needs, was assigned the position of Captain.
*this part was somewhat difficult to translate, just due to sentence structure being awkward for english. not entirely confident that i got the exact nuance down. feel free to send any corrections in my ask box if i got anything wrong! **this is just my best guess. let me know if it's inaccurate!
Erique and Misyl
Members of Flamela's squad. Erique, an ex-convict who finished* her prison term, serves as Flamela's partner. Because the canaries were short on wardens, she was scouted and made a warden. Misyl is the prisoner Erique is responsible for. She hasn't done anything particularly bad, but she was enlisted because the canaries were understaffed. Even she herself doesn't have much awareness of what she did wrong.
TL I've seen floating around says "she has no sense of guilt" in the last sentence, but there's a も in that sentence that wouldn't make much sense with a statement like that, as well as 罪 referring to "crime", rather than guilt. *The term translated as "finished" can also mean "to graduate" (in the non-academic sense), and considering Erique was pardoned, I think the intended meaning may be closer to the latter, but you also wouldn't say someone "graduated" a prison term, so I worded accordingly.
Organization structure
EDITOR'S NOTE 島の冒険者が畏怖を抱く存在、カナリア隊。その一端が垣間見える資料を公開。
EDITOR'S NOTE Feared* by the adventurers of the Island, the Canaries. This document that reveals a glimpse into its inner-workings is now revealed to the public.**
*could also be interpreted as "awe inspiring", but just based on context i'm guessing it's fear. **really an approximation of the general idea of this sentence, it doesn't translate very well.
*this originally was 草, and the only logical translation i came across was that it's an archaic term for "ninja", but In this case i feel like "spy" was a more apt translation. I could be totally off the mark though.
#dungeon meshi#the canaries#flamela#misyl#erique#translation#dunmeshi#slight edit as of 6/30#just a translation note to clear up some minor confusion

Is there anything about Shimea (is that the name of the Elf Queen?) in the new adventurers Bible? I'm super curious about the monarchy system!
Didn't realize she was named anywhere!
Here's her profile in the new adventurer's bible along with google translation (I don't think the translation ended up good tho), apparently her name is Heimea!
Heimea is the literal romaji from her name in katakana but I don't think she has an official name translation, seems pretty straight forward tho different from raiosu and chiruchakku.
Only other thing I know about her is that she walks around with her pussy out
Flamela's extra speaks a little more about the monarchy

Dungeon Meshi Chapter 94
It's time to tie up loose ends starting with Mithrun.

Sums up perfectly what happens after all this.
Like Flamela says, the demon was made by mana to better communicate with humans and Laios destroyed it. Magic isn't gone, but the methods that allowed magic use may no longer apply.
Before it gained an appetite, mana was responsive to answering the desires of living creatures, and it ate desires to try understanding why everything wanted to eat even though eating wasn't a permanent solution to their hunger.
After Laios ate the demon's appetite, it still had the power to speak, understand, and curse Laios for doing something it didn't like. At best, magic will probably still work the same, but there will be a greater divide between what magic can and cannot do since mana has lost the desire to do whatever it takes to satisfy whoever wields it.
Laios's reaction after watching Fleki casually try to suffocate Mithrun.
Revenge stories always have that "And then what?" aspect to them. What if you get your revenge? It won't bring back what was lost or fix whatever was destroyed. Sometimes they end with the person feeling no satisfaction, other times they end with the person finding some other outlook in the process.
Mithrun's story has a twist to it where revenge is literally the only thing that kept him going. His story was not this tragedy of someone becoming so obsessed with revenge they let everything about them be swallowed by that desire until it's all they have left. Instead, everything else was taken from him and his only options were wither away as an empty shell or devote himself to pursuing an impossible goal.
The end of his revenge story is not the usual tragedy of having nothing left after achieving his revenge. The demon was thought impossible to defeat. But now that it's gone, there's nothing left Mithrun can do.
Something about Kabru has endeared him to Mithrun from the moment they first met. The first time Mithrun ever spoke in the series was in response to Kabru's concern about the Canaries entering the dungeon. Mithrun thought Kabru was plotting something, but was willing to follow Kabru's suggestion of evacuating and sealing the dungeon rather than charge in and kill the dungeon lord. But it was that moment in chapter 54 where Kabru spotted someone unaffected by the mushroom spores that turned him into a person of interest to Mithrun.
Maybe Mithrun had a similar knack for understanding people before he became a dungeon lord. His retelling of events to Kabru was filled with dozens of names and everyone's relation to each other. If that's true, maybe Mithrun wanted Kabru around because Kabru could understand him in a way no one else could.
It's why Mithrun was willing to tell Kabru everything, why he was mad Kabru betrayed him, and why Kabru was the only one able to convince him to keep living.
The demon's modus operandi was to make someone with strong desires a dungeon lord, prune them of everything that wasn't related to that desire until the dungeon lord was singly focused on it, and then eat that desire and leave the lord as an empty husk. Then it would seek new victims to repeat the cycle.
One of Dungeon Meshi's themes is the importance of conservation. Senshi periodically stresses that the party should only take what they plan to eat, and he got into a lot of arguments with Marcille because she would overdo it with her explosions. The kraken chapter demonstrated the importance of conservation to a degree by showing that the kraken eating too many fishmen caused the fourth floor ecosystem to fall into disarray.
Kabru's talk with Mithrun is an abstract extension of conservation. As long as a person lives, they will have new desires. The demon acts as an antithesis to this theme of conservation because it would eat so much until there was nothing left. It's end goal was to extract as much desire out of everyone in the world without much thought about whether it could keep that up forever.
Marcille is genuinely scared of Mithrun and she's seen what he can do with that cloth.
I don't know how to explain why these moments are always so funny to me.
all I can think of when trying to parse this image is one of those shots in a romance anime where the person makes that beautiful face and we suddenly see roses and sparkles and a zoom-in on their face.
But the roses and sparkles is just a weird elf thing cause they always have to be pretty and the faces are very much not people making beautiful faces.
Or maybe its the contrast of Mithrun being all "Look at me and how wonderful I am" while the party is about the throw out their backs because of him.
Looks like Mithrun is using the slice of flesh he teleported rather than the sheet to cut the body.
Kabru said you can get new desires and Mithrun is working to carve Falin's body because he's gained a desire to help her. He doesn't emote often, but whenever he did, it was almost always when he desired to save someone from his own fate.
Mithrun has had a desire to save people from becoming uneaten scraps like him. And he would become more his "self" whenever he had an opportunity to fulfill that desire, whether that meant he would speak softly and sympathetically while pleading for a lord to stop, anger and resignation when he had to kill them, or whatever he's feeling right now as he carves Falin's body.
Sometimes, Mithrun's eye would turn back to its original silver color. If his true desire was to be finished off, then maybe those instances were him thinking he was going to die. His eye changes color in fights but it also changed when Kabru grabbed him in chapter 55. Those instances might be because he thought he might die whether because he was charging into a dangerous fight or because he got startled by something. When he fought Marcille, his eye turned black when he thought he'd won, but it turned silver again when he realized he failed and was going to die.
I can never tell if Senshi recognizes when people are using food as an allegory and he wants to add to it or if he thinks people are actually talking about food and he wants to give them cooking advice. But either way, he always manages to say exactly what someone needs.
Mithrun might be scraps right now, but with the right methods, he can becomes something new or grow back to his old self.

Great news: they are so real

Even greater news: I am rapidly becoming a Flamela stan and she gets an in to the polycule

Cithis x Pattadol should get called Cittadol They’d make a citadel together. Metaphorically (unless…? /j). Or, because of each other lmao, gotta keep the other out or risk a siege on their wellbeing and peace of mind. Feelings are already complicated and they are gonna make it so much worse… Emotional brick walls.
#I am very serious and what’s more I am very invested#Flamela x pattadol is sm like one of my non-dunmeshi otps aaaa#Very disillusioned experienced soldier who sees the corruption of the system#x new rookie still trying to hold onto a positive outlook who finds value in her work#Their respective complicated relationship to their family……#Cittadol#cittadela#Pattela#??#Pattadela#Cittadela only gets closer to my citadel themed ship name 😏#Sigh ok so now I gotta make more posts about this ship on top of my cithis appreciation post whew my plate is full#Cithis#pattadol#flamela

New day new conspiracy to be unhinged about woooooo
SO.
This right here.

The moment where Kabru reveals he’s Milsiril’s baby boy (and more relevantly the last survivor of Utaya)
Kabru telling them that he actually wanted to enlist in the Canaries directly, but couldn’t because of the racial barrier. How true that is……. Well let’s say I’m sure he wanted to when he was little, buuuuut by the time he left it wasn’t that they wouldn’t let him
And tbh the reason why is very much the next panel:
The Canaries learn he’s Milsiril’s little boy and immediately fucking claim him as theirs, asking if he’s been eating well, if he wants cake, telling him to cheer up and smile sometimes
It is notably the convicts, especially Otta and Fleki although Cithis has been leading the conversation; Pattadol is not in frame and Mithrun ruins all their fun by staying on track
Kabru is not 30 seconds out of saying he was raised by their vice commander before he is being babied, and there’s a fun read of just “well this is our child now we must care for him for Milsiril hello new nephew”
But. Given what we later learn Milsiril’s care is actually like. The room where Kabru could eat all the cake that he wanted, that he never ever wanted to return to even when freezing and starving.
Where she gave him such arduous and extensive sword training he thought he would die, with the stated intent of showing him how bad it could be to make him give up and stay with her forever.
“Wanna eat some cake” is suddenly a much darker comment, and doesn’t have a directional bubble, so I’mma pin it on Cithis on general Sketchy Bitch vibes
Now, that only makes sense if these folks know Milsiril directly, or have some way to know what her home life is like for her adoptees
(Or Cithis can read minds which let’s be honest absolutely no one needs to be true but she deserves it)
But. So does that immediate tonal shift
“Oh, you’re Milsiril’s kid. Now we care about you beyond being an interruption.”
We know Pattadol is on her very first mission. We know Cithis has been responsible for Mithrun’s care for long enough while he’s back on active duty that she gets bored of her new doll.
(And that she only started respecting him after they acquired Pattadol, whiiiiich. He got back to active duty 14 years ago. None of the other Canaries got their own timeline, but he’s also had long enough to have an established track record of getting his warden partners killed
When Flamela assigns Cithis to his wellbeing, she pretty clearly knows the extent of his caretaking issues, and this whole section of the timeline is fuzzy, but it is specifically Pattadol who is the first to tempt Cithis into telling Mithrun to hurt her
And specifically not until after he refuses that she begins to respect him)
Milsiril has been retired for the same 14 year period, taking Kabru and for some reason one of her own Canary convicts home with her, but she served with Mithrun when he initially became a Dungeon Lord 40 years pre series… and most of that squad died in Mithrun’s dungeon
(Also his lover became a snake person at some point for some reason sooooo monsterfucker ahoy)

(We know that’s the lover from both Mithrun’s initial vision and his Adventurer’s Bible comic which identifies his brother as the one with the short hair. Presumably they were not always a snake?)
None of the names he gave Kabru in his backstory refer to any of his current party members
Otta and Fleki mention Milsiril in Otta’s comic when teasing Otta about being a pedophile because she only dates halffoot women and breaks up with them when they turn 30
(This being past middle age for halffoots, who become adults at 13 and live to around 50; Chilchuck is 29.
One might expect… say… visible signs of aging to show up around 30. Reminders of how little time they have left. Although, frankly, how much free time does Otta actually have to be dating outside of work???? They’re so shorthanded Mithrun made captain the minute he could serve after Utaya)
Ahem. We digress.
Otta’s reaction (directly saying Milsiril treats shorter lived people like pets while she loves them as individuals, which Kabru Does Not Deny) might be because she’s seen Milsiril’s behaviour directly, or just being sick of the comparison. Hard to say, but Milsiril already doesn’t like elves
No, the conspiracy theory today is that CITHIS in particular has worked with Milsiril between Mithrun being rescued and Utaya’s destruction, possibly with Fleki and Otta
They’re all close to Mithrun’s age so there’s a very real possibility they were serving when Utaya fell, and either were lucky enough not to get sent there (there are so many dungeons in the world) or unlucky enough not to retire in the aftermath
Dumping Mithrun with Milsiril’s survivors makes perfect sense - the two had served together as wardens and Milsiril Barest Possible Minimum took a personal interest in Mithrun returning to duty after Utaya
She’s the one getting him to take his first steps and tells him she’ll get him back in a dungeon
Milsiril, known hater of elves, left the Canaries on good enough terms with her convicts to take one with her (Helki, shown in Mithrun’s story and Kabru’s training flashbacks - the only other survivor we know of from Mithrun’s dungeon)
And these particular convicts immediately brighten up knowing that Kabru is one of Milsiril’s; he’s in a very different position from Mithrun, who basically has direct power over their lives and deaths, but if you have a potentially unstable new captain who’s gonna be extra dependent on his convicts coming in…
Well, it’d be nice if the convicts have a reason beyond “well if both of our wardens die we can’t use magic so we will too” to keep him alive and moving
Note: they did at some point hand him directly over to fucking Cithis, who has an established track record of wrapping her captains around her little finger and doing whatever the fuck she wants anyway
(To the point that she’s left and “rejoined” the Canaries multiple times, and her behaviour with Mithrun is considered her having calmed down… while actively trying to have him hurt his subordinate wardens and plotting to kill Pattadol)
So. Not. Y’know. Convinced that anyone necessarily was thinking that particular assignment through. Although you could argue that they were just heading off the inevitable and letting her know this one is high maintenance
ANYWAY.
Tl;dr: Mithrun’s a monsterfucker, this is established fact and not a conspiracy theory
Kabru’s been adopted by the Canaries the second they know who his mom is, which may explain why no one actually tries to stop him when he grabs Mithrun later despite him not having a weapon
(Fear of Milsiril finding out they’ve hurt her boy > rescuing Mithrun or later even stopping Kabru from helping Laios repeatedly)
And Cithis, Fleki, and possibly Otta worked directly with Milsiril at one point before Utaya, which is why Mithrun was given them specifically - he was one of Milsiril’s projects too, Milsiril’s personal involvement unclear
How much this has to do with Mithrun getting all his warden comrades killed but apparently not his convicts: unclear
(Still bet Cithis “helped” with the warden before Pattadol)

New Canary Lore (Preview image from Complete Adventure Guide)
With bad translation by me.

This is really cool info!!!!!!!! And confirms a bunch of stuff we didn't know for sure.
PARTIAL TRANSLATION: The Canary Squad is a group that adventurers on the island fear. We have published materials that give a glimpse of this. Canary Corps Organization Chart The Canary Squad is made up of prisoners and the guards who manage them. This document reveals information about the members of Team 2, led by Deputy Commander Flamela.

Hard to get much from this unfortunately, but seems like there's a group of commanders above the Canaries but below the Queen that call the shots (makes sense), and also a side group for Canaries that aren't good at going into Dungeons (also makes sense).
So now we know Helki was pardoned/finished his sentence and works for Milsiril as some kind of servant (light labor, probably a house servant). We also know that a Canary prisoner can theoretically be pardoned and become a guard, like what happened with Flamela's assistant. That's probably why she's always wearing a hood, doesn't want people to see her ear notches and get confused about the chain of command. (You guys have GOT to find a better way to indicate rank than just ear notches 😂 Give the officers different colored capes or something...) Flamela's under Mithrun and a "deputy chief" or "deputy commander" I'm sure it's vague in the Japanese and that's why there's wildly different translations. Now it makes sense why Mithrun was able to tell her to "shut up" without getting in trouble, and why all the Canaries had to go along with Mithrun's promise at the end of the manga, he's the highest ranking guy there. Flamela IS related to the queen, but distantly. Also they both have relatives that seem light-skinned, which makes sense since the elves clearly have a lot of skin color diversity throughout the population. And now we also know the genders of the various background canaries! I'm so happy there's more men and they aren't just all girls 😂 I had a gut feeling that long hair freckles, bottom left corner, was a boy. Still no names for them though 😂 but that's ok, Larry, Moe and Curly my beloved.

how does one make or get a familiar? -lots of space for admin's theories and headcanons hehe
((not sure if you're just asking me or misyl, so mod yapping time
((as usual, here's your warning that you've entered Mod Yapping Territory™. Mod Yapping Territory™ can potentially involve manga spoilers. !!This time the canon content included will be sourced from the adventurer's bible and the manga!!
((i'll start by saying that the adventurer's bible does have basic information on familiars to work with along with the source material. if you're only curious about my own thoughts on them, i'll have it separated by a line
((the ones used by members of the canaries we see seem to all fall under the first category of familiar types.))
((the only example of the second category of familiars that i can think of is holm's undine, though i've also seen people say that thistle's little dragons are the same. it seems like only the users of the first and third categories suffer physically when their familiar takes damage))
((when it comes to how the user is affected it depends on the amount of consciousness put into the familiar. marcille and the members of flamela's party only put partial consciousness into their familiars. they're still able to speak and use their bodies. the side effects with the familiars taking damage or dying are extreme discomfort at most.))
((however, fleki puts her full consciousness into her familiar. she's unable to use her body or communicate, being seen carried by lycion if the group has to move. she gets brain damage to the point of needing to be killed and revived when her familiar is killed.))
---------------------- ((now onto personal thoughts:
((when it comes to the form a familiar takes, it's canon that one in the second category would just be based on the combination of plants and animals it is. the third category of familiars has more variety due to being created with certain skills (see skyfish for example). for the first category, i personally think that what is summoned would depend on the summoner needs in it as well, just with less customization. they do seem somewhat flexible since we see fleki with a bird small enough to put on mithrun's head and up to three somewhat bigger ones. larger familiars might require more mana if we compare fleki with the summoners on flamela's squad (though one member is seen with a large bird as well). i think she's usually just shown with one is because she puts her full consciousness into it. familiars with the ability of flight would be more useful for surveying dungeons than creatures that are stuck on the ground.
((most of the familiars we see are birds, though two members of flamelas squad still fly but aren't birds. i also think the connection of mostly bird familiars and the name backstory for the canaries also makes sense. see here
((i've seen discussion on whether fairies are familiars or not. the way they're made would most likely fall into the third category. however, their summoners aren't affected by them being grabbed, manhandled, or even dying when it comes to mithrun's. i personally think fairies are their own separate thing.
((i could be missing a thing or two, so take what i say with a pinch of salt

Just gonna throw on top there to the lovely and complicated pile that is Rin:
It’s entirely possible that being taken by the Canaries saved her life
She was a child whose parents were lynched for “evil” magic, alone in the burned ruins of their house; it’s not likely anyone from the nearby town was going to pick up an eleven year old kid and keep her fed after that
When Kabru is thinking about his own party being taken by the Canaries, he mentions Rin has bad memories of the elves
And shows Rin in Canary armour

Eleven year olds grow. Real quick. We know the Canaries were in contact with Milsiril pretty soon after they acquired her, since Milsiril raises short lived kids and they couldn’t get Rin to eat, but she didn’t actually die
(Milsiril also specifically refused to take Rin in because she “couldn’t take another child”, but sent Kabru to socialise with her and see if he could help - 3 years after his own major trauma, which he at least seems externally to have recovered from - or repressed)
I think it is possible that Rin got informal magical schooling from the elves while she was in custody/whatever the formal explanation was for her presence; we know even just routine questioning often takes years, and Rin got out relatively quickly to travel freely with Kabru
Milsiril is an impactful enough figure that Kabru stealth-name drops her to get the Canaries to do what he wants… and it works
Milsiril knows where Kabru is, and what he’s doing - she shows up at his room to visit him in one of the supplementals
She knows he left with Rin, and she insisted on putting him through hell/training him extensively before letting him go dungeon diving
(We also don’t know what Helki, the Canary convict who still lives with Milsiril and is poking traumatised baby Rin in OP’s post, did as a magical specialty soooo lightning is on the table)
We do know Rin’s magical training was never formal because of her grudge against people who did get to go to school for it as being privileged and stuck up… an attitude, by the way, that she shares with Cithis, another of the Canary convicts who explicitly recognises Milsiril’s name and takes more interest in Kabru once it’s spoken
Since her parents were suspected of ancient magic, it would make sense for the Canaries to try and see if she could recognise any of it; there’s literally no other reason to take her
(except again that she’d probably die if they left her; Flamela’s an angry and aggressive elf with absolutely no grasp on her softer feelings because when she was a very young child (Rin-sized, funnily enough) her twin sister was taken away and probably assassinated at court
She is. Not someone you would expect to articulate sensitive topics well. Especially with a free and cranky sounding excuse.)
Given that all of the Canary convicts are in for a personal relationship to ancient magic, they’d probably also want to see Rin cast, since I agree she was old enough to learn; who better to recognise any “dangerous” habits?
With the added bonus of Milsiril’s interest via Kabru, I’d say the reason Rin can definitively recognise (or believes she can recognise) specifically elven casting, not just elven style magic like Laios will learn, is because of what she learned with the Canaries
She either saw them cast enough to pick up tells, which is less likely since the convicts’ magic use is heavily restricted outside of a dungeon and Flamela’s unit was canonically kept from all dangerous assignments (so they didn’t get called in on the way to bringing Rin to jail)
Or when Kabru made it clear to his mom that his new friend was coming with him to a dungeon, Milsiril pulled some strings and got Rin some informal lessons, probably from the Canary wardens since it’s all legal magic
(Given the HEAVY mage leaning of every single Canary party, that was probably actually reassuring for Milsiril; Kabru ain’t great at magic, but at least if he keeps Rin around he has a mage Milsiril knows and can estimate the ability of
Milsiril was sadly probably the tank of her own squad, unless they had a beastman, because she is specifically known as one of the finest sword masters of the elves… and her magic seems to mostly be animating dolls to Also Stab Things)
Anyway all of this is just to add yet more complexity to the depths of Rin’s feelings towards the elves, because she plainly does not like them (and freaks when she’s backed into by Flamela, the elf that arrested her ass in the first place)

But at the same time, everything she has now is in one way or another because of the same exact elves who traumatised her as a child, who she may well remember better than her actual parents
Even Kabru, whom she never would have met if Helki hadn’t wandered in to visit and then gone home to Milsiril
Emotional damage! 😃
Rin Masterpost
Rin! Rinsha Fana! Beloved side character I think about far too much (or maybe not enough?)
I decided that it might be nice to put together an informational post about Rin, since she has some of my favorite background details of any character in Dungeon Meshi. This is partly as reference for myself, and partly for anyone else who might be interested in her but not know where to chase down the tidbits we we get of her, both in canon & extra materials. There’s also a little bit of theorizing and analysis sprinkled in for fun.
If anyone spots something I missed, please let me know and I will add it in!
Alright. Time for ultimate #rinposting
History and Timeline:
We don't have an official timeline for Rin (even in the expanded Adventurer's Bible, sadly), but we can put a lot of pieces together based on Kabru's timeline & their respective ages.
Rin is 2 years older than Kabru, and they met when he was 9. Assuming that he met her soon after she was taken to the elven capital, that means that the elves took her when she was 11.
Before that, she lived on the Northern Continent. Interestingly, when Mickbell asks about Shuro, Rin says she was born "here."
Since "here" doesn't mean the actual Island itself, it must mean simply "not the east." She is described in the Adventurer's Bible as having "no real knowledge of or attachment to the East," so maybe that's why she draws a "there" verses "here" line.
I'd also like to add a note here that the elves don't seem uh... they don't seem great about respecting the value of other cultures, especially those of short-life species. Milsiril seems to have discouraged Kabru from eating or remembering food from his hometown, at least, and that's even as an adoptive parent who cares (at least in some way) for her child. As I will touch on later, the "care" that Rin was under probably had even less respect for her history or ties to either Eastern or Northern culture.
That is all to say, considering that Rin spent many years with the elves, I'd take her having "[no] attachment to the East" as more of a comment on how she feels now, and less as a definite choice she made. She may genuinely have chosen that approach and opinion for herself, she may have been pushed towards it by the elves, and she may have had little choice at all in the matter - all are valid interpretations, though I personally lean towards the thought that it's unlikely the elves didn't have at least some hand in it.
Anyway, Rin does seem to know at least a bit about her heritage - she can presumably name and identify the specific island her parents are from, and she recognizes that "Shuro" isn't a name used there. She also knows that different places from the Eastern archipelago speak different languages, so she knows at least a little about the other islands as well.
Some additional extrapolations I'll make based on these facts: she never mentions, and probably isn't in contact with, any family from her island. This may be because her extended family died, because her parents didn't (or weren't able to) maintain contact, or because she lost contact when she was taken by the elves. Somewhat relatedly, she also prooobably doesn't speak the language, at least not fluently, though her being able to comment on the state of language in the archipelago makes me think that she at least learned a little as a kid.
Anyway, Rin's parents were refugees from the archipelago, though we don't know what specifically caused them to leave. There is this little tidbit of info we get (from the cover of chapter 48, of all places), though:
So yeah, that seems like it would be the backdrop of Rin's parents fleeing. As I said earlier, it's unclear if Rin might have any living family left back on her island. The listing she has for “family” in the Adventurer's Bible is just a dash, but so is Izutsumi's, for instance, and we know that she was taken from her family with no knowledge of who might still be out there. It's possible everyone else was killed, it's possible they were separated... it's possible that Rin's parents didn't even know.
As an additional note, and this is speculation on my part, but I think there is an argument to be made, with this tidbit from the cover as well as the Nakamoto clan's specialty in espionage and use of ninjas, that the politics of the archipelago are partially based on Sengoku era Japan. Not necessarily super relevant here, but I think it's interesting context for all... of the archipelago characters, honestly.
(Especially considering it seems like the Nakamoto clan is in a relatively comfortable position, and yet clearly are involved, or at least prepared to be involved in larger conflict. How stable is their position, really? How is Shuro's father viewed by the wider region and archipelago as a whole? What about his lord? NOT THE POINT THIS IS A POST ABOUT RIN. BUT IT'S VERY INTERESTING TO THINK ABOUT.)
Okay, back to Rin's parents.
Whatever caused them to leave, they made their way to the north, where they made their living with their magic for a time. There are no specifics about what kind of magic they used, but we know at least some examples of jobs that magic can get you, based on the flashback to Laios and Falin's childhood in chapter 26. Laios proposes that Fain could use her magic to be a priest, gravekeeper, or wandering exorcist. Though these are specific to Falin's affinity with spirits, they give some idea of the shape of the work that might be available. It's important, but it is also on the outskirts of society - not necessarily admired or appreciated by the average person.
And Rin’s parents were killed by vigilantes for that magic. It's not entirely news that superstitious villages in the area would sometimes kill magic users - we see a small drawing of people being burned at the stake in a panel towards the end of the manga:
Nonetheless, Rin is the only person in the main cast who has experienced this brutality firsthand. And she did experience it firsthand, having been found by the elves as the sole survivor within the burnt ruins of her home.
It is unknown exactly how she survived, or what happened to her parents before and during the fire. Rin lived, and they did not.
The elves came some time after the fire, intending to investigate reports of ancient magic. They (and we) don't know if Rin's parents actually did use ancient magic, or if the reports and murders were simply spurred by general fear and superstition. Rin was the only piece of "evidence" that remained, and so she was taken back to the west with the elves when they left.
We don't know much about her time on the Northern Central Continent (where the elves/Canaries are based), but it doesn't seem like she was adopted or taken in by anyone the way that Kabru was. According to the Adventurer's Bible, after being taken into custody, "under their care she was treated as a captive animal would be." I would guess that means very basic food and shelter, little to no education. Probably the most social contact she got was from Kabru, as well as maybe, occasionally, from elves treating her as a curiosity, such as in this bit in the Adventurer’s Bible:
Assuming she left with Kabru (which seems like it is the case, there's no info about them having separated during that time), she spent 9 years with the elves, and has been with Kabru on the Island in the 4 years since then.
She also stays in the Golden Country after the end of the story, apparently working as an alchemist.
Additional Details (& Speculation):
What does she remember of her family and home?
I'd like to take a moment here to explore a little of what Rin might remember of her parents and home.
For reference, we can look at Kabru. The canaries came to Utaya when Kabru was 6, and he arrived in the capital when he was 7. He remembers the events of the tragedy in his home, and has some memories of his mother and life in Utaya, including memories of local dishes.
Rin lost her parents and home at 11, so she presumably has much clearer memories of the events that lead to her being taken by the elves... or she might, assuming that they haven't been completely blocked by her trauma from the event.
Yeah, I am fairly damn sure that she's got some memory issues from trauma and PTSD. For one, this is the state she was found in:
As already mentioned, she was also treated like something of an animal by the elves. She probably didn't have a lot of contact with other people, which would further perpetuate that sense of isolation and dehumanization. What I'm getting at here is that Rin probably didn't have much to help pull her out of this place, or heal these wounds. She had Kabru, who was also a kid and even younger than her, and she had herself.
Obviously trauma leaves different scars on everyone, and everyone responds and copes in different ways. But I do think it is interesting that we never hear anything about Rin's parents or life before the elves, and there are no real details about it given in the Adventurer's Bible the way we have for Kabru. What's presented is more surface level facts: they were refugees, they made a living with magic, they were killed.
I'm inclined to believe that things are laid out this way because that's how Rin holds on to these things. She knows things about them, but possibly remembers them more as things she was told/knows to be true, rather than actual memories she can picture herself experiencing.
Rin's Magic
In an interesting counterpoint to her potentially spotty memory, I do actually think Rin may have learned magic from her parents (or started learning, and was self-taught from there). She never attended a magic academy, and actually has a bit of grudge against people who did - owing to the social protection afforded to "upper-class mages," which her parents did not have. She also almost certainly wouldn't have been taught by the elves, who not only treated her as an animal but also knew her parents may have been involved with ancient magic.
Falin began to show signs of magical talent at 8, and was sent to the Magic Academy at 10, and that was as someone who had absolutely no guidance about or exposure to magic in her home town. Raised by two mage parents, I think Rin absolutely could have been learning some things by the time she was 11.
In terms of continued learning, I'll add that Rin is able to identify Marcille's magic as being A) from an Academy student, and B) cast by an elf:
This makes me think that she continued to study magic on her own while held by the elves, and probably even more so after leaving with Kabru. They didn't form the party until two years after they left the elves, which would give Rin plenty of time to try and learn from other adventurers on the Island, or to study up on her own. She'd probably be able to pick up some dungeon-crawling basics (like the water walk spell), as well as become familiar with the skill level and expression of skill common in different people with different backgrounds (hence why she is able to comment on the "textbook" academy wards).
Much like Marcille, Rin also seems to rely on a 'one size fits all' Big Boom method of dealing with monsters: lightning. We see the best example of its power in the fight with Chimera Falin:
But we also see her cast it pretty recklessly in a few other places, including the end credits of the new anime ED, which I think provides a good example of the downsides to such an approach...
Yeah, it is very much a 'get out of the way or get zapped' spell.
Especially since Marcille's offensive magic is self-taught and works very similarly, this definitely reinforces the idea that Rin figured most of this stuff out herself.
Outfit and Character Design
Dear sweet Rin of the Red And Black... how I love her design.
First of all, her clothes are damaged. Despite the fact that Rin looks relatively well put together overall, her outfit is worn out. I have some theories on why this is that I'll get to in a bit, but for now I'll just touch on what this design communicates in general about it.
I think, just like with Kabru's horribly messy room, it creates a sense that there is something more complicated underneath the surface. Something that isn't being addressed or seen to, just as the dress hasn't been mended or replaced.
It also reflects her not caring a ton about her appearance. She's neat, but she's not concerned about being pretty, so she doesn't bother with fixing up her outfit after her dungeon crawls. This also fits with her perpetual scowl (which I will talk more about in a bit), and slightly disheveled hair.
Next: the gloves. At first I thought they might be a sort of uncomfortable-with-touch thing, but after skimming through the manga and some bonus content, I have another theory. Rin takes the gloves off to eat, as well as a few other instances, such as when working on a spell with Holm and Marcille in chapter 36
This one is especially interesting because she has them on in the next chapter, during the fight with Falin. Since she also isn't wearing gloves during some of the Daydream Hour art of her outside of the dungeon, that leads me to believe that they are specifically for combat.
What does she need them for, though? Most other casters we see don't wear gloves. Well... just look at the other half of the page where she attacks Falin with lightning:
She is enveloped by this spell. I said it before was pretty reckless magic, but maybe its not just a problem for her teammates, but for her as well.
So here's my theory: maybe the gloves are rubber, or some other electricity-resistant material? They might help protect her from her own magic. I don't know why a caster would need gloves for combat otherwise.
I also think this might be why her dress is tattered at the bottom, by the way. Especially since the Daydream Hour genderswap design doesn't have a similar problem with his outfit, since the tunic isn't as long.
I will admit this is a bit of stretch/guess, but I think it's a fun one, and I wanted to share. I do think I'm right about the gloves being for dungeons/fighting specifically, at least. That seems pretty consistent throughout all of her appearances.
I also mentioned her scowl, so I'll touch on that briefly as well. The (fairly confirmed) explanation for Rin's expression is that she intentionally wears a frown to prevent her other expressions from showing through. I think it's important to emphasize that it's not just smiling that she is trying to suppress here - it's any strong emotion:
Anyway, because I can, here is the art of Rin smiling.
Rin and Kabru
I have talked a bit about Rin and Kabru's history, but I think it deserves its own section.
I think it's very interesting that Rin is pretty much the ONLY character in all of Dungeon Meshi that has explicit canonical romantic interesting in someone. It's literally part of the main summary sentence in her character profile.
This could be sort of reductive as a way to describe a female character (and in some ways it still is), but I think in part the simplicity and directness of it actually is part of what makes it so interesting. Especially when on the very next page we see the comic about her backstory. "This mage is in love with Kabru" -> one page of a horribly traumatic event and a child frozen in shock with no one to comfort her. What does that do?
Well, in my opinion, it shows how much Rin focuses on Kabru as something to keep her in the present. In contrast with the immense loss she has experienced, her love for Kabru is current and alive. He has presumably been her anchor for years, and I think that her love is part of that anchor.
Adding to this, in contrast with how explicit her feelings are, she never seems to actively pursue Kabru. She complains about his potential interest in other women, but she doesn't really flirt. She doesn't let herself smile around him any more than anyone else, and she doesn't hide her bitterness or anger from him to present a more appealing persona.
As much as she craves Kabru's attention, and has stayed by his side for years, I don't know that she really wants to possess him. He seems to know about her feelings, more or less, and she seems to know that he knows. Maybe she believes he doesn't reciprocate and is respecting that, maybe she's afraid of what she could lose if she tried to change things, or maybe the change itself frightens her. In any case, though she's not exactly happy with the way things are between them, she doesn't seem to be trying to change that status quo.
A specific thing I'd also like to talk about with their relationship, beyond Rin's love for him, is her fear for him. As the Adventurer's Bible puts it, "she worries that his knack for dealing with whatever life throws at him might lead him to get too full of himself and end up in serious trouble."
Rin is an interesting mix of restrained and explosive, herself. Her magic is destructive, her temper seems to run hot (she gets annoyed easily, at least), and her feelings for Kabru are apparent. At the same time, she doesn't let her emotions show on her face, she is the one who bluntly states that the group has hit the limit of their abilities, and she doesn't act on those obvious feelings for Kabru. It's interesting, then, that what she fears for Kabru is that he won't restrain himself.
And a small personal idea about that as well: I wonder if she somewhat blames her parents for getting killed. Again, this is very speculative, but I think it's interesting that her fear for Kabru is that he will get too full of himself. Take up too much space. It's never really stated what Rin thinks of her parents, but it can be easy in grief to search for control, and control often means blame. If they hadn't been so confident, so flashy, would they still be alive...?
I don't know if she's ever thought like that, and it could well be that her fears for Kabru come from a totally different place. But it's an interesting connective thread between her past and present - the idea of "getting in trouble" for taking up too much space and being too confident in one's own abilities.
Miscellaneous Tidbits:
On that note, I'd like to wrap up the main part of this post, and move on to a few extra things that I couldn't find another place for.
Rin plays with her hair when she's stressed
Using stressed as a pretty big umbrella here, because I think it's hard to perfectly pin down all the emotions at play, but it is a habit of hers. Best displayed in chapter 32, but it shows up in other places, too.
Her design contrasts with Marcille
This is a small thing, but I just love how much they are visual opposites.
Rin wears red and black and has dark hair, Marcille wears blue and white and has light hair. Marcille cares a great deal for her hair and puts it up in elaborate hairstyles, and Rin's is mostly loose and a bit messy. Marcille was even educated at the Magic Academy, which Rin dislikes. They both have little capelets. Also they both look very cute in each other's clothes.
Rin knows Flamela (and they meet again in canon)
Nothing much is done with this in canon, but I think it’s super interesting that Flamela's squad are the ones that find Rin as a child and take her away to the west, and then they end up stuck in the dungeon together for a bit.
Two days??? I'm so very curious what things were like between these three.
Aaaand I think that's all I have to say about Rin! For the time being at least. There's a lot more analysis that could be done about her and Kabru especially, but for this post I wanted to keep things at least somewhat anchored to canon facts, with only a layer or two of speculation on top.
If it isn't already obvious, I think Rin is a super interesting character with a ton of potential depth to explore. She mostly interacts with Kabru in canon, but has ties to a bunch of other characters: she and Marcille fill similar roles in their parties but have differing personalities and histories, she and Falin (and Laios) have been tremendously shaped by xenophobia and fear of magic common in the Northern Continent, her parents fled from conflict in the same region Shuro and his retainers are from, and she has history with Flamela and some of the second canary squad.
Her temper, her fear, her love... her repression and passion - they all inform her character, even in small ways, even with as little time as she spends on the page.

9/27 ouija session
this wasn't the best session, as we had a lot of action but it was mostly from a spirit claiming to be ZOZO. we maybe got 1-2 other spirits willing to talk to us but for the most part it was zozo just being difficult with us even when we wanted to have a genuine conversation. i didn't include the 2 sessions that were us just bickering/telling zozo we didn't want to speak to them.
1. 0-1 countdown (we stopped around 8 and said goodbye to the board)
2. we said hello and opened the board, it went straight to GOODBYE
3. is there anyone here? planchette slowly moved to Z Z ... is that your name? YES. made a few circles around the board. went to ZS. immediately took us to goodbye.
4. sydney saw a spider, which she's really afraid of, and we got an intense pull to GOODBYE that wasn't from us. we all got a little spooked because it was such a decisive yank to close the board that none of us had initiated.
5. we asked if anyone's there, it went straight to GOODBYE
6. we asked if anyone's there. we got ZZ again, they counted down to 1 slowly, which is characteristic of ZOZO. we said goodbye before getting to 1.
7. ZZ again, we closed the board.
8. asked if anyone's there, went straight to GOODBYE
9. opened board and we got a very tentative spirit introducing themselves as ARY. we say hello, we got their name (ary), asked if they had a message for us, they said YES and then went to 6. we asked if they had anything else to say, they went to goodbye
10. 1...2... we closed the board because we figured it was zozo counting up again.
11. ZOZO again, we asked if they had anything else to say to us that wasn't Z and they said NO, we closed the board
12. Z again; went to 6 and then said they didn't have anything else to tell us and went to goodbye
13. ZZ again
14. (we were streaming on tiktok and had @flamela-pg online talking with us. they suggested a spirit that might want to talk to us.) mr. B, knew flamela and wanted to say hello. spelled through the numbers and then went backwards through the alphabet. we asked if it had anything else to say and it went to goodbye.
15. is JOSE here and willing to speak? ZOZO answered us. we said goodbye.
16. we got a new entity! we asked what's your name: AXA, do you have a message for us? WATBMNYAMBY (they were very polite in that i asked for them to pause the message so i could write it down and they did). that's your whole message? YES. GOODBYE.
17. what's your name?
"RAS"
do you have a message?
"MBY" is that it?
"WAY".
"maybe way?"
"are you here for anyone specific?"
"YOU. "
"you're here for rillie? "
"YES."
" do you have a message for her?"
"ZOZO."
okay, goodbye. (we figured it was zozo from earlier being taunting).
18. anyone here? P....Z... it stopped on Z so we knew who it was. we closed the board and said goodbye.
then we went home!

Two more Helkis!

Also I was wondering if you knew the name of this lady, she was one of the Canaries pardoned after Utaya, and became an assistant to Flamela. I can’t find her name anywhere 😔

(The one on the middle left)
Oh I did miss that helki walking besides Milsiril! Thank you!!
Her name is Erique! She's in the new adventurer's bible
(katakana is erike but Erique is officially how to write it)

Unnamed member number eight? Am I missing something?
((Hello, you've entered Mod Yapping Territory™ Mod Yapping Territory™ can potentially involve manga spoilers. !!This time your spoiler warning is "out of context snippets from the manga and additional media"!! The non-spoiler tldr is basically: Only Flamela, Erique and Misyl are named. The rest of her squad is unnamed, though there are tiny crumbs when it comes to their crimes. This post and the part two of it go over translations if you're curious.
When it comes to the "number eight" part, I basically just counted the members (aside from Flamela and Erique since Flamela is the captain and Erique is her partner). Helki and Milsiril are shown on this page, but I only counted the active members of the squad as of the final part of the manga.
I am leaning towards it being the unnamed teammate however.
While her and Erique both have similar hair (though the member that got taken out by Mithrun has seemingly shorter hair than both of them), we don't have official colors for #8 (so we don't know if it's blonde, grey, silver, or white. Only that it's light). My main logic behind it is height based.
We don't see Misyl and #8 next to each-other as often as we do with Erique, but these are the closest panels I could think of:
Meanwhile the height difference between Erique and Misyl is much more noticeable:
So basically, I think Mithrun teleported into unnamed member #8 or another random Canary since we don't see much context.
(Extra note: Flamela's fairy is so un-serious compared to her, it's so cute. Look at it.)

yeah, it's fun to imagine what factions there could be. I wonder if there's any ideology equivalent to proto-liberalism? It's kind of more interesting to me if the political strands are a little more unfamiliar though. I kind of want to research to see what potential options there are given the organisation/development of the northern central Continent. Like maybe they conceive of their duties as a state somewhat more equivalent to an ancient empire than a modern one. Like Ancient Rome or something. There definitely should be some conservative factions, particularly rowdy after heimeya passes since she's a "staunch traditionalist". Funnily enough I think milsiril's family (house of tol, I think, but I may be wrong), as an old military house, could be in this one. They'll be agitated about the potential of losing power. I can actually see Flamela being more aligned with a modernising faction - she seems fairly pragmatic and has seen more of the world than many elves. Given the issues they clearly equipped mithrun with, it may seem ironic to say I can imagine his family being in a modern faction! Because they are said to be investors, and I doubt the conservatives have a particularly realistic attitude to the need to invest in business run by non elves, for example. They may want to present themselves as fairly cosmopolitan- while still holding all the same privileges as before, of course. And it's worth considering the heir and by now potentially the head of the house of kerensil is mithrun's brother. He experienced being on the other end of elven prejudices and he seems to have a soft heart... but on the other hand, he's much more realistic and interesting to me if he isn't a perfect nice guy who respects short lived people. He also seems to be close (is it canon they were together or just mithrun's illusion?)a dangerous woman who should have been "outside his reach". for such a prestigious house, even if mithbro was treated badly and rumoured to be illegitimate, he was still a child of the kerensil. that means she must be really important! Personally I imagine her to be a royal relative, but not a super duper close one.
Also, cithis is definitely involved in the moving and shaking. She and flamela seem to be close, so I can imagine her naming her a court sorcerer and completely scandalising everyone. A former convict, not even a noble! Cithis the fortune teller, favourite of the elven queen. She'd be like rasputin.
Given her disdain for elven noble society, I can see flamela disenfranchising the powers of the nobles. Again, I think she would want to modernise, which most of elven high society would find extremely shocking. but for an empire, increased equality or upheaval in the core doesnt necessarily bode well for the periphery. They might be too busy to reinforce their rule, but flamela might happily start a war to distract a conservative/warhawk faction from interfering in local reforms.
God damn that's a ramble. But elven politics, they're just so fun to imagine.
Also I had a completely crazy thought but. If I was laios and co. I would definitely want to at least try someone consuming part of laios' body to see if that confers some of the effects. It probably wouldn't because of the way matter taken into the body naturalises magically to become part of it without seeming to confer magical effects. But also, I can imagine that consuming part of laios' body would temporarily confer a lesser version of the effect.. (for example his semen). It seems to fit the nature of the curse that if laios' body decomposed under a tree, that tree would repel monsters, because his body is repugnant to and will not be consumed by monsters. Therefore, if a person ate....
I think I just think that magically assisted anthropophagical rituals to convey the succession of the kingdom sound metal
You know, I could see a real advantage in the knowledge rin and potentially kabru have of flamela. Because I actually wish I had put this in my World Map Notes but Heimeya is in her mid 400s and elves only live to about 500 - the Northern Central Continent is coming up on a regime change and with Flamela's twin dead, she's the most likely heir. And she no longer has pressing military duties to use to keep away from the role, with the canaries no longer nearly as urgent (and thus prestigious). Rin knows Flamela from when she was taken by her unit of canaries, though I have no idea how much that knowledge amounts to. I'd imagine Kabru is definitely aware of her circumstances at least- that's prime elven noble gossip and he grew up at least adjacent to both those circles and the canaries, who she is an important member of. They might not be quite young enough to be around still when the regime change happens, but theyll certainly want to prime their successor for what to expect. Personally I'd be nervous. - I like Flamela, she's cool, but she's an elven noble who displays the usual prejudices for her position, treated rin like seized livestock, and has attained most accolades and spent most of her life in military service. It's most logical to want to secure her throne by reestablishing their global influence and reclaiming lost territory. If they are lucky then her close proximity to the near end of the world that laios averted will earn some caution/respect for melini, but it will depend whether that extends to his successor- that's why I think the most effective choice would be to pretend to have more control over the monster effect, and maintain the fiction that it's inherited and so the throne can't be seized from laios' heirs. Either that or attach a choice of successors with some pageantry to pretend to be passing the effects on, but that's going to be less convincing to people who are used to direct blood inheritance of the mandate to rule, and especially to elves who know more about how magic works.

Aaaah wait. Maybe the distinction is being a criminal. Something like:
- commonly elves don't use or straight up don't have family names. They just use nicknames.
- the only elves that use their family names are the nobles, in which case they preface the family name with the honorific "of the House of" to indicate that they are a recognised member of the family. Mithrun of the House of Kerensil etc.
- when someone committed a particularly heinous crime, they get stripped of their noble title. However, due to how elven society works (low birthrates, remember? Also we know Flamela receives special treatment due to her affiliation with the elven monarchy even when she joined the canaries especially to avoid it) It's very important for them to keep track of members of noble families even when they have fallen from grace, so those elves keep on being indicated by the noble family name, they just lose the honorific part. So Cythis of the House of Ofri becomes Cythis Ofri
I'm making a dungeon meshi oc who's an elf nobility but I have a hard time giving them a name. I look at the dunmeshi elf names but I can't tell if they mean something. are they based on flowers? words in another language? or jumbled made up words to form a name? the only name that's normal-ish is Marcille
Marcille probably has a more tallmen aligned name yeah, for the others my guess is that they're made-up names that sound elvish
The named elves (with elvish names) we have are:
Nobles:
Mithrun of the house of Kerensil
Pattadol of the house of Vari
Flamela of the house of Sorn
Milsiril of the house of Tol
Others:
Fleki
Lycion
Cithis Ofri
Fionil
Heimea
Misyl
Erique
Otta
And these guys from Mithrun's Backstory
Opa, Mikepas, Coyote, Fungil, Pahsa, Pohsa, Helki, Yugin, Sita, Snow
I can't recognize any trend in the name (besides that names ending with an "il" sound seems common) and they don't sound like real life names even when it's a little similar (like Erique and Mikepas)
Cithis is the only with a surname I wonder whats up with that..
#this is WILD speculation like i cannot stress how much of an asspull it is#dungeon meshi spoilers#elf name discussion
