I FINALLY watched the Arceus Specials (coated with fun sub team commentary asfjhgsjhfs)!

And boy was it the most enjoyable thing to watch in the past two years asjhfsgjhsfghsf.

For me that is.

Nice nostalgic music and dialogue from Diamond & Pearl, loved seeing my best fav froggo Gureggru <3333, also HOLY FRICK TAKESHI GOT BUFFED TEAM WISE SO NICELY, hi Happinas! Hi Haganeil, so glad you're permanently back to Takeshi since Sun & Moon it seems <333 Bless, bless bless.

Also HIGH TOUCH OHMYGOD, no build up whatsoever to an important moment like that for the fans but whatever safhjgsjhf, I don't really have any complaints! I liked it. And it's pretty clear to me this was movie replacement.

But anyway, that was short commentary on my thoughts on those episodes. Fun times.

Moonvale's Pokemon Commentary: #208 Steelix

Oh boy, my first pokemon review with a mega evolution!

Just for Looks:

Steelix is a metallic Onix that has a slightly smoother body and a flatter head without Onix's horn, but now has two random spines coming off three of its body boulders. Did it try to grow legs?? I can't imagine that's very aerodynamic for tunneling. ...Geodynamic? That aside, it has a much more aggressive face and though it is not much larger than Onix at 30'02'', its still terrifying to imagine running into something like this in real life! Remove the whites of its eyes and just give it them red eyes in a black void. NIGHTMARES.

Mega Steelix looks less rocky in the body than its regular form and looks a bit more... geometric? Its head now more resembles a giant fancy shovel shield thing. And its eyes are blue now which makes it feel less threatening to me. And some of its boulders have black on some of the faces of the stone with the same shade of blue as the eyes in a ring shape. It's weird. Those spikes it randomly got on its body are now crystals (based on the color, probably diamond). So much for old Onix looking like black diamonds. Missed opportunity! Finally, there's weird particles orbiting its neck region. What is that? Why is that??

Shiny Steelix replaces the grey coloration for gold and it works. It really works. It also helps the crystals stand out more when it mega evolves.

What's in the Name:

It's a steel onix. See Onix, add steel to it. Bulbapedia also says it could be from helix but... I see nothing helix like about Steelix. There’s not even a piece of offical art or sprites where it’s curled in a way to mimic a helix. Its Japanese name, Haganeil, is basically steel + nail/tail. IT’S A METAL THING, Y’ALL.

The 'Dex Says:

Steelix are a result of Onix that live deep underground, with the pressure and heat changing them into metal. Except that we have to get them through my least favorite form of evolution: trading. Even worse it has to be holding a metal coat. So I guess that we don't ever see natural Steelix since they live so far underground and we have to use trading to somehow cause the effect on our Onix? Onixs. Onixis. ROCK SNAKES!

It also states Steelix come about from Onix consuming large amounts of iron. So maybe some Onix become Steelix, and some become that rounded black-diamond old Onix that the Onix pokedex mentioned. But then, many Steelix entries state that Onix evolve into Steelix when they live for 100 years. I want my black-diamond bubble Onix, dangit! Get outta here with this not round metal nonsense!

Sadly, Mega Steelix didn't appear in Sun and Moon's dex, so we don't get a special dex entry for it. Nor for Let's Go P/E. We'll never know what the heck is up with the orbiting neck particles at this rate!

It's Rating Time!

Steelix on its own gets a 3/5. While I like how it looks, it's a item-trade evolution so I will never be using it in a game since I have no friends to trade with. Also it's not a black-diamond bubble Onix.

Mega Steelix gets a 2/5. Take what made Steelix meh, and add some frills of dirt that revolve around its head. The crystals on it save it from getting a 1 though, as does its shiny. Though I would even give the shiny a 3/5 if I wanted to separate things further.

Perhaps some fanart would be a nice homage to him? Like displaying all the Pokemon characters he voiced (Okido, Adeku, Ohsubame, Betobeto, Gantle, Iwark, etc)

I’ve been thinking of something like that, yeah. Maybe Okido, the main cast Pokemon with Ishizuka’s voice including Takeshi’s Haganeil/Steelix (or Iwark/Onix like you said since its more iconic) and Korijo’s Matadogas/Weezing with an actual depiction of Ishizuka-san in the sky saying “To be continued” or “Next time: A new beginning” to symbolize his role as the narrator as well.If I can’t finish one today it’ll have wait till sunday or later but I’ll try.

Kasumi: She mega evolves Gyarados, whose destructive power stands out even among Water type Pokémon! It drove Satoshi's Pikachu up against the wall! Kasumi is well known as the "tomboyish mermaid", and is the Gym Leader of the Hanada Gym. Let's enjoy Alola! Takeshi heads to the Pokémon Center and Kasumi heads to the sea!
