Chapter 5: The Distant Plains (Section 4)

“What?! That brat Lyndis is attacking?!” The moment he heard his soldier’s report, Lundgren was so shocked that he dropped his chalice.

The chalice, made of gold, clattered when it hit the floor, and the wine inside of it spilled, painting the spot blood red.

“Impossible! What happened to Eagler?!”

“...It is unfortunate, but the General was killed.”

“Wh-What…?!” Lundgren’s body wavered uncontrollably at this unexpected turn of events.

Their enemies were few in number. The thought did not even cross his mind that they could defeat Eagler, a man with the title of paladin. And even if Eagler was defeated, they would prioritize sneaking into the castle to save Hausen. Or so Lundgren thought.

There was no possible way that they would come and so brazenly rush the castle from the front…

Lundgren glared at his soldier, his eyes bloodshot with anger. “So then, how goes the battle? The enemy army is very small, so you have them completely surrounded, correct?”

If it truly was the case that the enemy was few in numbers, then it would be the most basic of tactics to utilize their superior numbers, surround them, and wipe them out. If his soldiers were able to do that, it would be impossible for them to lose.

However, the words that came out of his subordinate’s mouth absolutely enraged him.

“N-No, um… As I understand it, since it started raining, the weather has been preventing us from marching, and we have been unable to surround them. And not only that, they are fighting through our ranks bit by bit…”

“Y-You useless fools!!” Lundgren, now having entirely lost himself to his anger, hit his soldier and knocked the man over.

‘...How could my plans be foiled so easily?!’

The night before, Lundgren had lied to his stubborn older brother, telling him that his granddaughter was dead in an attempt to send him spiraling into despair and suck the last remaining bits of his spirit out from within him. The reason why that old man had been able to survive all this time was because he still had hope in his desire to see his granddaughter just once.

Once Lundgren killed that hope, he thought it would turn into despair, and put him on death’s doorstep. The results were exactly as he’d imagined them. Hausen was now lying in bed and refusing his meals. So long as nothing changed and Lundgren left him be, he would most likely be dead within two or three days.

And then Eagler would undoubtedly be able to kill Hausen’s meddling granddaughter. Lundgren had taken his family hostage, after all, so he would surely fight to the death. Or so Lundgren had planned. 

But what actually happened was, the annoying girl defeated Eagler, and was nearing the castle.

This was not the time to be relying on subordinates that had already proven just how little help they were to him.

“Bring me my lance and armor! I will slice her head off myself!!”

While he was already nearing old age, in his youth, Lundgren had served as a knight, and a powerful one at that, having earned the title of general.

He couldn’t hide the fact that his body had weakened, but the skills he honed in his youth had not dulled yet.

“Keh keh keh… If the brat Lyndis wishes to meet Hausen so badly…” As his soldier assisted him in putting on his heavy armor and helmet, a repulsive smile crept up upon his face. “Then I shall be the one to let her see him. But only her head!”

He would bring her head to Hausen and shove it in his face. Lundgren cackled, the twisted thought exciting him.

The rain falling sideways down from the sky soaked Lyn's Legion to their cores.

It had started at the same time the battle began, turning the hard ground into mud and halting their advance. Kent, Sain, and Rath, who all rode horses, had their mobility cut in half, and Florina's pegasus also struggled to fly through the skies in the intense rain.

But they were not the only ones affected.

Their enemy's mobility was also greatly reduced, and they could not rely on their numbers to brute force their way through the battle. For soldiers such as them, who would suffer a total loss if they had to rely on their own strength, ganging up on a single enemy was their one rule of battle.

However, in this rain, the mobility they needed to surround Lyn and her allies suffered significantly.

With the current state of the battle so greatly against their favor, the soldiers gradually started to turn around.

"Fu ha ha ha ha! What’sa matter, done already?! Is this what the Caelin Knights have been reduced to nowadays? You're useless! You're useless, every one of you!!" Wallace shouted while he stood as the vanguard like a wall, mowing down enemies as he went.

His bravery was so great it seemed as if he had never retired, and it inspired the active knights, too.

"We cannot lose either, Sain!"

"No we cannot, Kent! Let's show Lady Lyn our good sides!"

The unyielding rain had turned the ground entirely into mud. 

To a combat cavalier, their mobility was impacted the most. But these two red and green knights did not act as if they were handicapped in any way, thrusting their lances at each and every incoming enemy soldier.

While Kent’s magnificent skills made short work of his opponents, Sain defeated his foes in single, mighty blows. Sain’s strength and Kent’s skill drew the best out of each other. Their perfect combination had not a single weak spot.

"Whoa, you two have gotten a lot stronger since I saw you last!" Wallace said as he thrust his lance through another enemy.

During their last battle against General Eagler, Wallace had charged through the enemy's ranks on his own, so he hadn't seen how they fought at all. He was happy to witness his subordinates' unexpected growth after not seeing them for so long.

"We still have a long way to go. Likewise, your skills haven't dulled a bit!" 

"They really haven't! And you retired from your service pretty early, didn't you?"

"Muha ha ha ha! Maybe they have, maybe they haven't. My blood hasn't raced like this in a long time!" Their conversation seemed to put Wallace in an even better mood, as he started putting even more strength into his swings.

However, seeing him like that made Sain's face turn pale. "H-Hold on just a minute, Kent. Th-This doesn't mean that when this battle is over, Wallace is going to return to the knights, does it? I-I don't want him to!"

"Oh, really? I respect Sir Wallace as a knight. I think he has our best interest at heart when he assigns us his special training."

"I-I hope he goes easy on me…"

Even as they continued their idle chatter, neither of them slowed down a bit.

As the intense fight unfolded across the battlefield, the cavaliers and the knight were of course the stars of the show. But they were not the only ones fighting.

"Hyah! Hyah! Hiiiiiyah!"

Rushing around right in the middle of the knights' ranks was Matthew. He weaved his way in a low stance around their horses' legs, slicing them open, one after the other.

His goal was not to kill his enemies, but make them fall from their horses.

Those he attacked were in such great pain that they started rampaging and threw off their knights, just as he had intended. Because their armor was heavy and the ground was muddy, the fallen knights could not get back up.

Such knights were easy prey for the rest of Lyn's Legion.

"Guh!"

"Gah!"

"Waaaaah…!

"Gyaaaaaaah!"

Rath and Wil, Lucius and Erk. Their bows and long range magic rained down with unparalleled accuracy upon the knights crawling across the ground, taking down an entire chunk of the enemy army in one fell swoop.

Matthew sent the enemy spiraling into chaos, and Rath and the other three all took advantage of the opening to successfully finish them off, causing the results of the battle to go spectacularly in their favor.

"Alright, my plan seems to have gone perfectly! This is my cue, so I'll leave the rest to all of you!"

"Leave it to us! We'll stop them for sure!" At Matthew’s signal, Wil swung his bow and answered.

"...Though they may be enemy soldiers who have done countless bad deeds… It still hurts my heart to do this…” Lucius said, his words befitting of a holy man.

“This is a battlefield. If you do not manage your sympathy… you will die.” Rath warned him.

But just because he said that he felt sympathy for them, that did not mean that their enemies felt sympathy for them. And even worse, they had the disadvantage in terms of numbers. If they did not defeat however many enemies they could, then that could come back to haunt them later.

“I wonder how Lady Lyndis and the others are doing?” A worried expression appeared on Erk’s face.

“This strategy heavily relies on what we are able to do. If we cause enough chaos, then our enemy will focus their efforts here, and things will be easier for Lady Lyndis and the others.” Matthew said to calm everyone’s nerves, then turned to look south.

‘We’ll hold out here as long as we can, so we’re counting on you, Lady Lyndis!’

Medicine, zur Hausen, and the discovery of oncoviruses

The passing of German virologist Harald zur Hausen, 2008 Nobel Prize winner for Medicine for discovering Human Papillomavirus as the etiological agent of cervical cancer, has deeply impacted the world of medicine. The scientist was awarded in Stockholm along with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier, who discovered the HIV virus and passed away on Sunday, May 28th in Heidelberg at the age of 87.

Chapter 42: Relikt

In the castle, Teito goes up to a barred area to find someone talking all cryptic-like. A person tells their Queen that if the Prince bothers her so much, he should be killed. Then a Wars attacks Teito and he falls into darkness, where he hears the king being consoled for the death of his son. Then, the King, wielding the Eye of Mikhail, says the ceremony to shift the Pandora's Box will begin tonight.

At the Barsburg Church, Lance helps a little girl find her missing charm (having to use his scythe for some fucking reason...) and Labrador and Castor greet him. They all meet up with Wida and Labrador reveals why he called Lance back: Ten years ago, after Fia Kreuz stole Pandora's Box, he went to the Sixth District at the Hausen House and got himself a ticket to Seele. That's where Teito and Frau went. It's weird because the Memories Of Cuvere says that Fia's trail went cold and the whole reason the Seven Ghosts were created were to protect the seal on Pandora's Box. If Fest met Fia, there would be no reason he would overlook Pandora's Box. The whole memory trip seems to be a set-up by Fia himself but Lance raises another possibility: that the Memories Of Cuvere were altered. That's why he was called back...along with Relikt.

Walking together, Labrador tells the bishops that the memories of their vessels are limited to a single lifetime. Then they go in the hall of their Founders, give the activation code and review the memories of the past. They go back ten years thanks to Lance, Castor and Labrador de-aging appropriately. The chapter ends with them on the way to rewrite history.

So, it’s been a while, people who follow our Facebook page know what’s up but for those who don’t, there’s a problem with the door of the Quindo studio. Two weeks ago my badge to open the door wasn’t working, so I couldn’t get in, and now the problem remains, badges aren’t working. So I decided to make a home episode again, like in those good old Covid days, remember that? Again, the advantage of home radio is that we can play some tracks that are digital only, or some obscure and hard-to-find or super expensive music ripped from YouTube, so that is exactly what we did in this episode. Pictured below are The Serfs, and we saw The Serfs playing at The Pit’s a few weeks ago and they were really great. Unfortunately they didn’t have any records left, so we ripped their dance hit “Vanishing Act” from YouTube and played it in this episode. Main Canon/Bio: Born on the Sacaen Plains, Lyn lived a fairly happy childhood with her parents and tribe, up until they were all slaughtered by bandits. Lyn would then spend most of her teenage years living in solitude on the plains, learning to fend for herself, up until she met a tactician named Mark, and went on a short adventure to meet with her long lost grandfather, Hausen, and learn of her noble lineage. Sometime later, Lyn would embark on an epic adventure with the company led by Eliwood and Hector to fight the nefarious forces of Nergal and the Black Fang. Two years after the defeat of Nergal, Lyn abdicated Caelin’s rule to Ostia, Hector’s kingdom, after her grandfather’s passing, and instead chooses to return to her life of solitude on the Sacaen Plains. She occasionally visits Eliwood, Hector, and her other friends from her adventures, though as time goes on, she feels herself growing increasingly distant from them all.

Additional Background/Personality: Due to growing up in solitude on the sprawling plains of Sacae, Lyn is known for being both energetic and very independent. Despite living on her own for a long while, Lyn is actually quite friendly, and is kind and polite to most people. It should be noted that she is quickly tempered by rudeness, and does not like being looked down upon, but it’s very rare for her to think illy of someone. Due to her tribes massacre, Lyn harbors a burning hatred for bandits and those of ruffian ilk, and she is not afraid to kill those who seek to her both her friends and the innocent. On a lighter note, Lyn is also known for her sense of honesty, and has never told a single fib once in her life, and likely never will. She’s also quite compassionate, always willing to reach out a helping hand to those who are truly in need.

Appearance: Lyn posses a slim waist, evened out by an above-average bust and well-toned legs that she’s achieved purely from a lot of walking. Many people notice the sharpness of her facial structure juxtaposes her warm smile. She has incredibly long dark green hair, the same color as her eyes, that travels down past her ankles, which she almost always keeps wrapped up in a ponytail. She wears a marine blue tunic that from the front and back drape down to a little bit above her feet, and the sides are left exposed. Underneath the tunic she wears a black cloth one-piece. She has a few variations, but this is pretty much her only outfit.

Abilities: Lyn excels as a swordsman, and in many folktales and bard songs, her prowess with the blade is said to be almost unmatched. As a hunter, she is also proficient with a bow.

The heat from his breath rises while beads of sweat swim down his brows and into his eyes so he can’t stop blinking rapidly. The contact in his right eye starts to shift and his vision is blurred momentarily before he's able to blink it back into place. Someone beside Benji urges him to hurry up. 3. (I Found You) In a Melody [galahau/abandoned]: The ivory beneath his fingertips is cool and smooth, making the stroking motion of his fingers waltzing across keys as easy of an action as breathing. Mellow notes flood the lounge as the cello kicks in, and Galahad’s eyes slide shut so he can tune into the music; the slow rattle of the snare or the bass drum kicking in at the perfect intervals, the taper of the cymbals and the resonating pluck of the cello strings. The sharps are chiming off the airwaves like dewdrops and finally the soft-silk flow of the lounge singer’s voice is the finishing touch to round off the harmony. [2015, Gangsta.]

Binding Patience [galahau]: Perhaps anyone with impatience wouldn't waste the time, but Hausen has all the time in the world when the end result is Galahad trembling on his knees at the edge of the bed, arms and hands bound in intricate patterns of rope behind his back, tethered and wound thick around his ankles like cast iron fetters. 5. Radio Silence [galahau]: There's an audible click as the playback device ejects Doug's tag, and despite Galahad doing his best to clean off the blood, his eye still catches laces of it tarnishing the shineless metal. [2015, Gangsta.]

Turnabout’s Fair Play [Worick Arcangelo, character study]:  It starts with him splayed out and down on his knees, covered in the grime and filth of Ergastulum still clinging to his bruised and broken skin. He should have known better than to leave the sanctity of home by himself, but it’s getting harder and harder to look Nicolas in the face when all he sees is the shadow of his family’s blood splattered across it. 7. The Aftermath [XS/1029]: Long after the chaos dies down and everyone’s left the hospital, Squalo’s not supposed to leave his bed but it doesn’t stop him from sauntering off to Xanxus’s private room. He suspects to find the other propped up against the many embroidered satin pillows he demanded from Lussuria with his brows drawn pensively, a miserable scowl on his face despite him supposed to be at peace in slumber. 8. The End of Things [8059/yamagoku]: It starts with a kiss, slow and sensual, warm like the rising sun and just as bright. 9.  Pyrexia [aokise]: When Kise wakes, it's to a throbbing headache and dull pain behind the eyes. His throat is burning raw and his joints ache, his muscles ache, everything is sore. He's a little irritated, if he's being totally honest. It's not unusual for Kyoya to come home at this hour but it isn't unusual for Kyoya to not keep in contact during the day and explain himself or his whereabouts either. But perhaps there's a good reason as to why he's arriving home at four in the morning. Mood  — Permanent Petals Epilogue [8059/yamagoku]: It isn’t that Gokudera wakes up in bad moods, in fact for the last few years waking up has been as pleasant as getting a full night’s sleep; no more shadowed insomnia plaguing the soft pale underneath his eyes, no more jittery and short cut patience – he is currently very content with his sleeping arrangements in this moment and all other moments that have passed and ones he has to look forward to in the future. There’s something about having him out here in the open, stripped of his clothing and dignity that sets Imayoshi’s skin on fire, gets him hot and irritated and he needs Hanamiya’s raw vulnerability to ease the itch whenever he gets it. 17. Living the Dream [sourin]: Sousuke's shoulder aches and the near scalding hot water does little to soothe the pain. He's an idiot, he knows without a certain redhead having to tell him this, but determination is something that's bred into him and he just doesn't seem to know when to quit. He grits his teeth through the blinding white when he moves his shoulder just slightly and it jars him with enough force to make him nauseous. It makes him angry, makes him wish for a time machine so he can go back and do things differently. [2014, Free!]

18. Youth [S80]: It begins with standing on a ledge, too high to come off from for it's your only salvation now that you no longer have the resolve to live. But it's when the no-good boy with the large, round eyes saves you and tells you there is hope that you begin to believe. It's the smell of the baseball diamond, the warm sun and the air of dirt and sweat and perseverance that make you feel like you're where you should be. It's the fleeting feelings when you dash from base to base and slide in to home plate that make this age in time seem like an eternal stretch that you never want to leave. Okay, so... I’ve been debating about doing this for a while in consideration of Beretta’s portrayal ... or at the very least make an au out of this and if I like it enough, actually make it a part of her main verse ... and that is, Bellatrix being the wife of Uranos Corsica and Matriarch of the Corsica Family.

Just think about it. Uranos doesn’t have any heirs or any living children that we know of, nor does he seem to have any successors, in fact, he doesn’t seem to care about succession at all from what little paneltime we know of him because he solely wants to kill the Twilights presumably to avenge his long deceased daughter who could’ve been killed by a Twilight, unlike Monroe who had Miles ( and presumably Diego after Miles although Diego had no knowledge of Monroe and Miles’ plans ), Gina who presumably has Hausen, and Loretta who presumably has Galahad now that Marco’s dead. 

Beretta seems ... awfully snuggly with him ( but then again that’s how she is with mostly everyone she likes lmao ) though in my interpretation, she actually despises him with all her entire being under layers and layers of courtesy because under his jurisdiction, she was bred, born, raised and trained to become a supersoldier, spy, assassin, and a hunter under extremely harsh conditions from a very young age, yet she slowly schemes her way to power by secretly plotting a conspiracy against him and the Corsica Family, the ones responsible for her abuse growing up as a child human experiment. With that said, please keep in mind that my Beretta is NOT just a ditzy airhead / sadistically perverted, she is a BRILLIANT actress and a master manipulator of many different facades who knows EXACTLY what to say and do to get other people to do what she wants them to do. She’s not here as ship fodder, she’s not here as some kind of daily smut dose or be one end of a ship or anything like that, she’s here as a woman with her own ambitions, her own goals and her own dreams and ideals who will stop at nothing until she gets what she wants.

She’s a spy, she’s an assassin, she’s a soldier, she’s a lot smarter than she appears and she has her own plots. She may be flirtatious and seductive as FUCK and it’s fine if your muse flirts with her but please don’t treat her like she’s shipping fodder or automatically assume that this is me forcing a ship on you ; that’s just a big part of who she is, and additionally, please keep in mind that she already has eyes for Striker and unless if you’re Striker, then she won’t magically fall head over heels in love with your muse when she barely knows them. It’s totally fine if your muse develops an attraction / romantic feelings for her but it’s very likely that they’ll be VERY one sided and she’s very likely just using your muse for her own goals.

Back to the main concept. 

Uranos hates Twilights ; Beretta was raised to kill Twilights ( and in my portrayal, so much more, as were the other Destroyers, and as another sidenote, Beretta is merely a codename and in my portrayal, her real name’s Bellatrix so that’s what I’ll keep writing her as and as a result if your muse is in good graces with her, they can call her Bellatrix or similar nicknames instead of Beretta when not on missions, just as Colt’s real name is actually Sora, Sig’s real name is actually Sigrid, Minimi’s real name is actually Masaru and Maverick’s real name is actually Marie - just to make things feel more natural ), he’s getting up there in age, she’s young and beautiful and would be capable of protecting him when the time came and honestly, I don’t see it as too far fetched if she was already having intimate or at least close enough relations with him seeing as how she snuggled up to him when we first see her and he doesn’t push her away from him knowing full well that she could kill him if she wanted to. So, due to Corsica not having any heirs, Beretta’s literally the PERFECT choice as a consort, as Georgiana already has her own business, Svetlana’s caught up in her duties ( and in a canon divergent au where she survives, Marie’s a lesbian so she’s not going anywhere near him LMAO ) and so, after accepting advice from his advisors to find a new wife, pop out some heirs and have the Destroyers officially back into the fold again by marrying her, most likely Victor, he’d start courting Bellatrix, and Bella, knowing exactly what he intended on doing, humored him and played along, despite internally being revolted by a man more than thrice her age, and she’s hated him since she was fifteen years old ( good long thirteen years ) but she knows that the closer she gets to Corsica, the closer she gets to assassinating him ... and taking all the power, money, glory, freedom and vengeance for herself.

So, let’s say Bellatrix actually marries Corsica either before or sometime during the events of GANGSTA. What happens then? Basically, everything that happens in canon is the same thing in this verse, ie Beretta still goes after Connie, she still kills Marco and everything else that happened in canon, only that she has more importance as not only head of the Third Destroyers ... but also, you know, Corsica’s wife. Immediately after the wedding, she’d hold heavy political influence over Ergastulum, believe it or not.

She’d be the head of the Third Destroyers, she’d have her own secret network of spies in the women and men working in the brothels under the family’s jurisdiction so she’d know who is genuinely loyal to the family and who is a traitor who’s willing to betray them, she’d be able to know exactly where weapons are smuggled in the city, and she would be able to command lower ranking members of the family around ie the other Destroyers ( Sig, Colt, Striker, Emilio ) and in a canon divergent verse, those formerly aligned with them like Masaru/Minimi who’s technically no longer with the Corsica Family due to running his own yakuza family called the Shobo-shi which I’ll touch up on at a later time, and Marie/Maverick, who ironically enough, was her leader fifteen years ago, back in CURSED ), Georgiana, Bernardo, Svetlana, Victor, Ivan, possibly even Worick, Erica and Mikhail ( as, keep in mind, the word of the don of the mafia family and as a result, his wife, is the law and must be obeyed or suffer the consequences, most likely death, and in truth, it’s entirely possible they’d fear Bellatrix more than they’d fear Uranos considering she’s a superhuman. ) ... and should something happen to Corsica, all his power and authority would go to her due to him having no heirs.

So, with all that said, I doubt that Beretta would be faithful to Corsica as a wife considering her personality as a whole and how she hates him, it’s very possible that she’d take other lovers, be they men or women ( because remember, she’s BIROMANTIC BISEXUAL - SHE LIKES WOMEN TOO !! ) without Corsica knowing, although she’d be discreet about it because she wouldn’t want to lose her position of power so soon. On a final note, I like how “Bellatrix” literally means “female warrior” or “beautiful woman” in Latin and “Corsica” literally means “Seirinoussai”, meaning “of the sirens” in Ancient Greek, the very same sirens in Homer’s Odyssey, which if you make it Bellatrix Corsica it would literally mean “female warrior / beautiful woman of the sirens” which is literally fits her so much symbolism wise, and not to mention Bellatrix is literally getting married to the devil himself ( as in the tarot Corsica’s described as the devil ).

Kent/Lyn, 12 & 35. Hector/Farina, 50!

Thanks for indulging me, but sorry it took me 90 years to get to it. ;P I made it extra long to remind you of the good ol’ days!!!

Kent/Lyn:

12. who do they confide in when shit hits the fan (besides each other)?

I feel like Lyn is the kind of person to have multiple go-to people, depending on the situation at hand.

She strikes me as an understanding and accommodating friend: there are some things that she just wouldn’t burden Florina with/that Florina might not be comfortable with discussing. Rank probably matters a little bit, here, because some issues don’t leave the room (or at least they stay only with the people in the room), like state secrets or the equivalent, but Florina’s perfect for regular friendship things (especially softer emotional discussions), reminiscing about the good old days, and some good old-fashioned harmless venting.

For angry venting, there’s always Sain and Wil. Sain is the right choice if she wants someone to get angry with her—you know, the supportive angry rant-with-you kind of friend who echoes your sentiment and allows you to have a dialogue with emotion! Wil is best if she wants a more neutral opinion/listener who will offer to help/give advice after the rant is over.

Depending on the setting, Wallace is a good choice for some ranting, too, but I love the thought of him being kind of like an uncle figure to her; he fills in some of the gaps about her mother she never really knew were missing, and had a real love for both of her parents that shows in the way he speaks of them; something she kind of holds onto because nobody else gets it.

Hector’s better for a sparring match than dialogue, but sometimes that’s what Lyn needs to get her mind off of things. I like to imagine he kind of ‘gets it’ when she needs to get out some frustration or something; it’s not anything she needs to talk about, but in absence of that, Lyn is the kind of person who still has to do something. If she’s looking for a word-fight she’ll go to him, too. He’s good for that, and he doesn’t (usually) take it personally.

Eliwood is a hard one to pin down, because it’s hard for me to imagine they’re really that close; I don’t think he ‘gets’ her the way most of the other characters do? He tries, though, and that counts for a lot. Also, he’s a lot like Florina in that he’s trustworthy: a good confidante. If Lyn ever needs personal advice (relationship or otherwise), I think Eliwood would be the right guy to go to for her. He wouldn’t tease or poke fun at her, and that information would NEVER reach anyone else’s ears. Ever. He’d offer diplomatic/polite advice with a smile and with an attempt to understand the situation and any important details first. He’s good at asking the right questions most of the time.

It’s been a long time since I deeply considered Lyn’s relationship to Hausen, but I think right now I’m sort of high-key imagining that they’re almost, like…fake-close? It’s not that they don’t love each other, because I think they do in their own ways, but being related or being interested in getting to know someone isn’t just a ticket to a close relationship. Not only do you have to want that, but you have to be compatible AND willing to take the time to cultivate what’s there. Lyn and Hausen both have tons of the latter, but I’m not so sure they’re compatible.

Her friendship with Kent still matters of course, so his place in this mix is probably a bit of everything, but he’s a high(er)-ranking individual she can confide in about information the others aren’t privy to…and he’s also a very good confidante (he’d rather die than betray her trust). She wouldn’t angry-vent at him too much because rather than just get emotionally hyped with her (Sain) or listen to her and offer calm, friendly advice (Wil), he strikes me as the type who wants to Fix It Right Now—even when that’s not necessarily the appropriate response. He may also kind of freeze up and Not Respond At All (when he doesn’t know how exactly he’s expected to respond), almost as a defense mechanism to avoid Responding Poorly.

Then you have Kent. Besides Lyn, he uh…really only has Sain. 

But hey, that’s actually pretty much perfect for Kent. He’s never struck me as the kind of person who enjoys societal pleasure of any kind overmuch. It’s not that he finds it painful so much as maybe awkward? Most of his life has been in service and when he was younger and more impressionable—at the age where you learn to make friends and all that—he was more interested in impressing the adults in his life. Thus, he has only ever had one or two people to talk to about more important personal matters. 

Again, it’s probably for the best. A couple of very serious and important relationships is about his maximum capacity. I don’t think he could maintain a slew of decent casual friendships (the way Lyn can), but also his bar for friendship and what constitutes a friend is very high.

Fiora is a good option for some general commiseration re: failure if he would bother to open up about it, but I don’t think either of them would do so easily. Still, they’ve both been commanding officers and I think that alone gives them something to talk about and discuss. I also feel their general morals line up, so if either of them need a rant about something other people would judge them for, they can go to each other.

Fiora and Sain are both great in that they would have Kent’s back if he needed it, so depending on how shit hit the fan, he could lean on either of them (but more easily on Sain just because that friendship has been years in the making; boon companions and all that).

He has decent relationships with some other people, though. I like to think he still looks up to Wallace, thinks well of Wil, and is on friendly terms with Florina, but I imagine his general acquaintances either stagnate or suffer because he’s not good at multitasking emotionally.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though.

(I didn’t really mention Farina because...eh. I enjoy their interaction and I love writing it, but without a lot of very meaningful buildup, I wouldn’t even consider them friends.)

35. do they have any regrets (regarding the other, or just in general)?

This is a delicious question and a perfect one for Kent and Lyn. Let’s assume their paired ending:

I always take the endings (paired or otherwise) with about a grain of salt. You know: more like suggestions! 

Kent and Lyn’s ending makes a reasonable amount of sense (you may have noticed that some endings just don’t ring true to characterization), but it also manages to be ridiculously open-ended. I guess at least it’s “happy.” (Unlike Canas’s. Damn blizzards.)

Anyway, Lyn abdicates and/or never assumes the throne (I guess there’s wiggle room there), Caelin’s totally fine with being absolved into Ostia (you know this is gonna happen), and they’re so chill about this that they don’t even mind Lyn running off with a former vassal. Maybe they didn’t want her ruling in the first place?

Eh, who knows.

The wording leaves room for questions/interpretative differences and all that, but the basics of it boil down to: they both go to Sacae.

This means they both give up things to go there, but we can’t pretend Kent isn’t the one making the bigger/more obvious sacrifice. He literally gives up everything except Lyn. Which, okay, the scope of it isn’t easy for a lot of people to grasp, but like, imagine leaving everything you’ve ever known and moving somewhere else with what you can feasibly carry with you on horseback.

That might not be too hard. Lots of us have moved across a country or even overseas.

Now imagine doing this, but doing it knowing full well that you may very well NEVER AGAIN hear from the people you’re leaving behind.

And not just that, but you’re leaving everything familiar to you. You don’t know the roads, the trees, the shape of the land, the colors, the smells.

Let’s talk Best Case Scenario! Even if, in good ol’ Fire Emblem-land, where farmers can be knights and all that, Kent comes from a farming background, he’d have left that behind before age 10. Again, on the BCS track, let’s say he retained a bit of that knowledge! Great! He knows a little about living off the land!

But he doesn’t know how to do it the way Lyn might know how to do it. So we have to go back to Lyn. She’s still pretty young herself, and her culture was big on group work; it’s not like anyone did the big chores alone. So Lyn almost surely has at least basic knowledge of what to do/what needs done, but 1) never would have done all of it, because roles were outlined, and 2) after a couple/few years away from it, and without the chance to grow into her role as a woman within her society, how much of the really important survival stuff does she actually remember? (Some of this depends on how old you think Lyn is and if her society felt she was an adult; either way she wouldn’t have been an adult for very long IMO, not enough to function in her society as such.)

There’s tons of stuff to explore here!!!! 

Lyn in Caelin has the same problem Lyn on the plains has: she still doesn’t get to become an adult the way she always would have imagined she would. Her culture isn’t dead, but with less than ten surviving people, the chance of it fully dying out within a generation is huge. She can pass some stuff on to a child, but not everything. It’s not the same. She’s going to have to mourn this, and it may not hit her until she’s out there again and the reality of what’s missing hits her.

She could join another tribe, maybe—in theory, it might be more complicated than that—but their customs aren’t going to be the same. Heck, they might not even speak the same (exact or similar) language. (Would they even accept Kent with her? This could be something Lyn is sacrificing to bring Kent with her.)

Anyway, Lyn gets a little of what she wants going back to Sacae (at least freedom), but she doesn’t get her culture back and she doesn’t get that lifestyle back that she misses.

Kent’s making the bigger sacrifice, though, because nothing about Sacae is familiar to him.

Depending on what they try to do and where they go, it’s really easy to imagine regret existing in little bits and pieces.

Kent strikes me as the sort to very rarely have *deep* regrets. He may oftentimes ‘regret’ doing or saying something, but the bigger decisions he makes are done with conviction and never with haste, so he usually stands by them and his heart allows him peace.

That said, there’s no doubt he has regrets. I like the idea of him having a few regrets about situations where OVERALL he feels he made the best choice, but the regret stems from the negative things that happened because of that choice (having to fight his former peers/allies/teachers, for example, or fleeing and leaving his men to possibly die when Laus attacked). You know, he wanted to have his cake and eat it, too, but he couldn’t have both.

And then we have his relationship with Lyn.

I bet he low-key would have regrets about going to Sacae after-the-fact. Not the *actual* going, and certainly not in loving Lyn, but in not spending more time with his family beforehand, in not being more prepared, not asking enough questions, not bringing more supplies, not learning more of the language(s), et cetera. So much can go wrong out there without a support system. Kent’s not stupid and he’s not helpless, but he only has control over so much, and accidents happen. If they ended up in dire straights and there was little he could do to help...or was even actively hindering progress, he’d blame himself and it’d be a whole mess where he feels like he can’t contribute and he’s worthless, and then he’s depressed and miserable.

Lyn surely has regrets in general (re: her culture and her parents and all that), but I don’t think she regrets anything deeply easily (something she kind of has in common with Kent). It usually takes a lot for her to get that lingering gut-wrenching regret feeling. But you’d better believe if Kent ended up miserable she’d feel it. She’d hate being the cause of anyone she cares about’s personal pain, but it’d be a little extra awful if she’s fairly content out there and Kent isn’t.

I rambled too much and my head hurts so I’m not sure if any of this makes good sense, but I think there’s a lot of room for regret within their lives and even their relationship—especially if things go poorly for them. Not the loving part, of course, but the part where they pursued something and because of that their partner isn’t happy anymore (or accepted anymore, or whatever).

Hector/Farina: 

50. if one of them were to come back after a long time, who would come to who? would it go well? would the other person take them back?

The only one who would probably ‘come back after a long time’ is Farina, because Hector’s pretty much tied to his canton after the end-game, so I gotta go with that.

As to if it would go well or not, well, I’m pretty sure I’ve RP’d like 30 variations on this theme (LMFAO), but the biggest factors are: their relationship with each other, and time.

If Hector was kinda into her and she acted like she was fine with that and then flew off for 10 years and came back trying to act like nothing was wrong... Well, it wouldn’t go well. I mean, not at first anything. (Nothing a good RP couldn’t fix, though. :B)

At that point in time, though, for an example to work with, it’s hard to say if Hector would ‘take her back.’ He may be unable to do so officially (married, busy running a country that’s falling apart at the seams, he has a daughter to worry about) and/or emotionally unwilling to let her back in. (Though this depends a lot on their former relationship and how she left/if she ever wrote to him or visited, if feelings were confessed, a lot of what-ifs, tbh.)

It also depends on how lonely he is. It gets clear that Hector and Eliwood get super busy and don’t even get to see each other regularly after the end of the game, so it’s possible that Hector would desire contact with someone who Gets Him (or at least Gets What He’s Been Through). The FE7 endgame is pretty much the opposite of FE8′s: it’s like nobody even knew it was happening and they gotta go back to their cantons like they didn’t just fight a whole ass dragon; he might be happy to have someone he can talk to about that again (in the event that his former vassals may no longer be in his direct employ and/or Farina fought by his side that day).
