Commission from @scarvenartist of Maia Whitney, co-protagonist of my Whitney & Davies book series. Magician, detective, logical thinker, taker-on of too much responsibility, Maia delights in magic because it's where she feels the freest, but also feels guilty if she isn't using it to benefit others. This book series has turned into one long exploration of how she learns to balance that joy and freedom with her sense of responsibility, which was not intended at the beginning but has threaded its way through each story all on its own. I am so thrilled with the way @scarvenartist managed to capture so much of Maia's personality in this portrait! (Not to mention the smashing red frock)

From the diary of Mary Chipman Lawrence, who accompanied her husband Captain Samuel Lawrence on the whaler Addison, 1856-60. Her young daughter Minnie was with her as well, and on July 18th 1859 it was her birthday and they celebrated it on board:

This is Minnie’s birthday—eight years old. I told her a month ago that when it was her birthday, I would make a treat for her in the evening and she might invite all the officers to partake with her. So she has ever since been looking forward to it as a great event. Saturday I made preparation, and I was fortunate in doing so, for I suffered exceedingly Sunday night and for the greater part of this day with a gathering at the roots of my tooth. I was able to get up, however, and prepare the treat for her. We set the table and called the officers down about half-past 7 P.M. Minnie was so happy she hardly knew what to do with herself, and I think we all enjoyed it pretty well. The officers all united in saying that they had not sat down to such a table since they left home. The treat consisted of a plate of sister Celia’s fruitcake, two loaves of cupcake frosted, two plates of currant jelly tarts, and a dish of preserved pineapple, also hot coffee, good and strong, with plenty of milk and white sugar. After we had finished there was ample supply left, which was sent into the steerage for boatsteerers, etc. Minnie arose this morning about four o’clock to look at her presents. She had a box of little notions, a book, and a pocket handkerchief from Mrs. Brayton; a pair of china vases from Mary White; two packages of paper dolls, a book, and a package of drawing cards from Helen Whitney; an ivory shuttle and a half dollar from her papa; and a bottle of cologne, a toothbrush, and a quarter of a dollar from her mamma. Not of much value, but they were all very pleasing to her.

One of my favorite bits of world-building I indulge in for the Whitney & Davies books is describing the types of magical clothing Helen creates. I came up with the below idea for the previous book, and I'm so envious of a world where this exists that I had to use it again in this one:

... she packed a bag with the bare necessities for an overnight stay (including, yes, one of Helen’s special dinner frocks that was enchanted such that it could be folded down to pocket handkerchief-size, and when unfolded returned to its original size and condition, with no wrinkles or fold lines. Maia had wanted it to be silvery-grey, the same color as her magical aura, but Helen had stated with such firmness that Maia should never use grey except as an accent color that she had yielded, and the dress was instead a warm cinnamon-brown which just brought out the red in Maia’s chestnut hair and which, she had to admit, did in fact suit her better than silver or grey).

Forget all the other magic in these books, the real fantasy here is having a roommate who knows exactly what sort of dress styles and colors suit you the best, and who then creates those dresses for you, and then enchants them so that they take up no room and never need ironing. (And, though not mentioned specifically here, are always made of natural fibers, since magic in this world only works on natural materials).
