From ‘not being taken seriously’ to getting Alia Bhatt as an investor, Phool.co has come a long way
According to the website of Phool.com, the founder Ankit Agarwal was sitting on the banks of the river Ganga at Kanpur when the idea of the company came to his mind. It was the day of Makar Sankranti which is celebrated by taking a dip in the holy river. Agarwal observed that temple flowers were being dumped into the river. As these flowers are filled with pesticides, the chemicals mix with the river water and create harmful compounds.
After enough research and data, Agarwal came up with ways to recycle the flowers from the temple. He along with Prateek Kumar, both IIT Kanpur graduates, then founded HelpUsGreen in 2017 which was later renamed, “Phool.com”. They started making rose incense cones, Phool vermicompost, and other products using flowers from temples across India.
Tumblr media
Their first challenge was convincing people that flowers, once used, could be incorporated into new products. The idea wasn’t considered as something to be taken seriously. The team spent hours experimenting, meeting stakeholders, and pitching their idea of managing temple waste in the country. It took a year and a half of research in a makeshift lab for them to develop flower incense, their first recycled flower-based product. Besides providing a livelihood to local people, the company also wanted to preserve the Ganga river.
The company raised $1.4 million in a pre-Series A funding round in October 2020. It was led by IAN Fund and San Francisco-based Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation. The startup has developed several eco-friendly and flower-based products like “Florafoam” and “Fleather. Floral foam is a 27 percent cheaper alternative for thermocol.  In February 2020, this startup was presented with PETA India’s ‘Best Innovation in Vegan Fashion’ award for using Fleather as an alternative to animal leather.
Talking about the vision of the company Agarwal says, “Through our efforts, we aim to build natural alternatives to synthetic chemical-based products by using deep-tech and research. We are perhaps India’s first natural incense brand taking a digital-first approach and have a first-mover advantage as bio-leathers are barely available in India. Phool.co has expanded its operations to Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.”
In October 2021 Actor Alia Bhatt joined in as an investor of the company. “Phool incense stands out for its fine natural fragrances and amazing packaging. I admire the founder’s vision of making incense and bio-leather from recycled flowers that contribute to keeping our rivers clean, creating a humane alternative to leather, and employing women in India’s heartland,” said Alia.
The company has been recognized for its efforts to create sustainable products with several awards, including the United Nations Young Leaders Award for Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations Momentum of Change Award at COP 2018, the Asia Sustainability Award 2020 in Hong Kong, the Alquity Transforming Lives Awards in London, and Breaking the Wall of Science in Berlin. The company has achieved a 130 percent year-on-year growth in the last two years.

In a religious country like India, it is quite normal to have flower waste. Every day there are tonnes of flowers finding their way to the several water bodies. These flowers are one reason behind the water pollution in our country which is now a growing concern.
To our happiness and relief, several startup companies like Aaruhi Enterprise, HolyWaste, and HelpUsGreen have come up with a praiseworthy and innovative idea. Let’s understand their eco-friendly business plan. The innovative idea is to use this flower waste and create something useful out of it causing no harm to the environment.
Aaruhi Enterprise – An Innovative Idea by Poonam Sehrawat
Initially, when she had started collecting flowers from temples, she observed that there were waste materials along with the flowers. She had employed people to help her separate the flowers from the waste, but success didn’t come to her overnight. The clean bunch of flowers was washed by rain. She was heartbroken but didn’t give up.
After days of hard work and constant dedication, she had sold her first order of incense candles on Janmashtami. It’s surprising how they make 400 incense sticks from 3kg of dried flowers. A unique feature of her products is that it’s 100% charcoal and keeps away mosquitoes. She has helped over 200 women to be independent by training them in flower processing and employing them.
Aaruhi Enterprise has products like air fresheners, incense sticks, and showpieces. Poonam Sehrawat has received several awards and recognition for working for a noble cause.

HolyWaste – Making waste look beautiful
Co-founded by Minal and Maya Vivek in the year 2018, HolyWaste is the first from the stables of Oorvi in the waste management and recycling arena. It mainly focuses on floral waste recycling. The innovative idea came to them when their friend and an avid gardener suggested that they do something with the floral waste. That’s when they came up with the plan to use these non-fragrant, dull flowers.
Suggested For You He is blind but a photographer. Read to know more about visually impaired Pranav Lal
It was easy to convince the people at the temples, but the real challenge was to convince the ones who directly handled the waste. But they overcame that phase too and registered Oorvi Sustainable Concepts under which the work of HolyWaste officially began.
Along with working towards a better and pollution-free environment, both of them work for a social cause as well. They have engaged women from the Gundlapochampally to make products using those flowers. These women now have a platform to earn a living and become independent. They have a wide range of products which includes hand-rolled incense sticks, petals, soaps, etc.

HelpUsGreen – World’s first lean solution to the temple-waste problem
HelpUsGreen was together founded by two childhood friends Ankit Agarwal and Karan Rastogi hailing from Kanpur. They took this flower cycling technology to preserve the River Ganges from becoming a religious sewer.
The innovative idea first came to Ankit’s mind when his Czech friend visited him in Kanpur during Makar Sankranti. His friend was worried about the sanitary of the river as trucks were offloading flower waste in the same water people were drinking water from.
After seven months of research and development, they came up with the vermicompost recipe. After this, they started by turning the flowers into incense sticks. They are well known for making the world’s first non-toxic thermocol called Florafoam. They’ve started to market their florafoam products under the brand name of Phool.
Lately, they have also been researching turning flowers into bio-leathers. They also hope to spread their operations further in Varanasi, Mathura, and Vrindavan.

From ‘dirty’ to dignified: how flowers are transforming many lives
This was what one woman said she liked best about working at HelpUsGreen, the social enterprise founded by Ankit Agarwal. She now earns more. For the first time ever, she has a bank account. She also receives insurance and retirement benefits.
“I asked her why a plastic stool, which is not even worth 200 rupees (about US$2.70)”, says Ankit, as he recalled the exchange. She replied, “I’m 53 years…

These Indian Entrepreneurs Upcycle Leftover Religious Flowers Into Useful Products
Helpusgreen takes the 800 million tons of flowers used annually in the country and makes them into incense and soap.
In India, people like to show their religious devotion with flowers. Lots and lots of flowers. Every year, some 800 million tons of blossoms–red roses, yellow marigolds, prickly xanthiums–are deposited at the nation’s temples, mosques and sikh gurudwaras, creating a colorful, but tricky waste problem.

The Science Behind Stress Relief with Agarbatti Fragrances
In today’s fast-paced world, stress is a constant companion for many of us. Whether it’s work deadlines, personal challenges, or simply the hustle of daily life, finding effective ways to unwind is essential. One simple yet profound method for stress relief lies in the calming aromas of agarbatti (incense sticks). When combined with sustainable practices, this traditional approach becomes not just beneficial for the mind but also kind to the planet.
At HelpUsGreen, we bring you the best agarbatti in India, crafted sustainably to provide both serenity and an eco-conscious choice. Let’s dive into the science behind stress relief through fragrances and how HelpUsGreen is revolutionizing this age-old tradition.
The Power of Fragrance in Stress Relief
Fragrances have a direct impact on our brain through the olfactory system. Here’s how they work:
Triggering Positive Emotions: When we inhale specific scents, they stimulate the limbic system, the part of the brain associated with emotions and memories. This process releases feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine, which help reduce stress levels.
Aiding Relaxation: Essential oils like sandalwood, lavender, and jasmine—often used in incense sticks—are known for their calming properties. These aromas can lower heart rates and ease muscle tension.
Creating a Meditative Space: Lighting agarbatti during meditation or yoga enhances focus and mindfulness by eliminating distractions and promoting a peaceful ambiance.
Why Choose Sustainable Agarbatti?
Traditional incense sticks may not always prioritize eco-friendliness, but that’s where HelpUsGreen stands apart. Our mission is to redefine how agarbatti is produced and used by creating products that are both effective and sustainable.
The HelpUsGreen Difference
Upcycled Ingredients: At HelpUsGreen, we craft incense sticks from upcycled temple flowers that would otherwise end up as waste. This unique approach prevents floral waste from polluting rivers while creating high-quality products.
Chemical-Free Production: Our agarbattis are made without harmful chemicals, ensuring a toxin-free experience for you and your loved ones.
Sustainability in Action: By choosing HelpUsGreen, you’re not just buying the best agarbatti in India; you’re supporting a brand that empowers rural women and contributes to environmental conservation.

Making sure devotion doesn't turn into pollution
According to many religious beliefs flowers offered during prayers cannot be dumped into garbage bins after they have been used, this results in them being dumped in the rivers and lakes polluting them. Helpusgreen (now called Phool) has found a way to utilize disposed temple flowers and turn them into bio-fertilisers and eco friendly products.
