Strong bow echo hits Omaha with hurricane-force winds
The presence of a bow echo on radar can signal damaging winds, large hail, and potential tornadoes. During the peak of the storm, PowerOutage.US reported over 250,000 power outages.

Severe thunderstorms battered eastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa on Wednesday, leading to widespread power outages in the Omaha metro area.
The FOX Forecast Center identified the storm system as a bow echo, which caused significant wind damage as it moved through Nebraska's largest city.

Wind gusts at Omaha's Eppley Airfield, the region's busiest airport, reached 90 mph.
The airport was closed for several hours after the storm for damage assessment. It has since resumed normal operations.
Across Nebraska, widespread damage to awnings and trees was reported, with PowerOutage.US noting over 250,000 outages at the height of the storm.
The Omaha Public Power District, the region’s largest utility provider, described the severe weather event as the largest restoration effort in recent memory and urged customers to be patient as crews started the cleanup process.
"The windstorm that hit the OPPD service area caused power outages for 220,545 customers," OPPD reported Wednesday night. "Some areas have experienced wind gusts up to 100 mph. There is significant tree damage and numerous reports of downed wires. Our crews are currently assessing the damage and beginning what is one of our largest restoration efforts in recent times."
City officials in Lincoln, which also experienced severe winds, reported that power outages affecting the town's wells temporarily disrupted water supplies and urged residents to conserve water.

The National Weather Service office for the region noted that most damage reports were attributed to straight-line winds. However, meteorologists will need to determine in the coming days whether any embedded tornadoes were present in the storms.
"Clearly, the damage is extensive and widespread, primarily due to straight-line winds. We have some reports of 'gustnado' circulations, and we will need to assess whether there are tornado damage tracks within the area affected by straight-line winds," said Brian Barjenbruch, a meteorologist at the NWS office.
Despite the severe weather, local authorities reported no fatalities related to the event.
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium also reported significant tree damage, but staff confirmed that all employees and animals were safe.
The extent of the damage prompted Governor Jim Pillen to declare a state of emergency following the storms.
Wednesday’s severe storms resulted in numerous damage reports across the Plains and the Midwest.
Initial reports from the Storm Prediction Center indicate that most of the damage involved downed trees and power lines, along with damage to roofs and windows.

The region is anticipated to see a reduction in severe weather chances as a slow-moving frontal boundary begins its eastward progression.
