Tigers' stripes are on their skin, not just their fur - but how often do you get to see it?!
This is the female Amur tiger at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium (I can't find her name online, somehow). A sign on the exhibit noted she had recently had medical care and part of her belly had been shaved in the process. A beautiful lady, and those stripes on her skin are just stunning.

Facing an uncertain future, 70 endangered yellow-legged frogs released in California lake
The mountain yellow-legged frogs, with their distinct pebbly skin, consist of two species - both of which have faced threats that have caused their populations to dwindle.
A species of frogs in Southern California whose future was once uncertain may have hope for survival in the wild thanks to a multi-agency breeding and reintroduction program. More than 70 endangered mountain yellow-legged frogs made their home this summer in a lake in the San Bernardino Mountains, where wildlife researchers continue to monitor them to ensure they settle in and thrive. The release marks the first time that the Southern California population of the species has been reintroduced into a lake instead of a mountain stream, according to a news release this week from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. The alliance, a nonprofit conservation group, partnered with Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska, to breed and raise the medium-sized frogs before releasing them into their natural habitat...

if you could take 8-year-old chaosfay on any kind of playdate (and all disabilities could be accommodated smoothly and money wasn't a factor), where would you go? what would you show her? how would you want her to feel when you tucked her in at the end of the day? what story about the day do you want her to remember best, when she's your age?
I think a trip to the zoo with a friend would be great. Especially when the zoo has the animal ambassadors walking around or having a show. Some of those shows let you pet the animals! The sooner I have in mind is the Henry Doorly Zoo I Omaha, Nebraska, USA (been there a couple dozen times and that place is amaaaaaaazing). Explore the butterfly house, the indoor jungle, the desert dome, and the aquarium (something they bring out manta rays and other fish into a shallow tank set low for people to touch them). Take the zoo train to ride around the place, and possibly thr sky line thing that looks like it belongs in a skiing place. Definitely bring lunch because food is expensive at the zoo, but make a picnic of it, but soft serve ice cream is something I will pay for. Buy a couple plushies, a really big tshirt (for sleeping in), artwork done by the animals, and a few postcards from the gift shops, and watch her and her friend fall asleep on the way home.
End the day with a sleepover and watching animal stuff, like March of the Penguins, and let them stay up until the sunrises because it's a weekend. At some point, there will have been a pillow fight, an epic blanket fort built in the living room (and using every quilt and unused bedsheets and possibly all the pillows), pizza, and popcorn. Oh, and a bath, because smelling like a zoo is not a good thing.

Strong bow echo hits Omaha with hurricane-force winds
The presence of a bow echo on radar can signal damaging winds, large hail, and potential tornadoes. During the peak of the storm, PowerOutage.US reported over 250,000 power outages.

Severe thunderstorms battered eastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa on Wednesday, leading to widespread power outages in the Omaha metro area.
The FOX Forecast Center identified the storm system as a bow echo, which caused significant wind damage as it moved through Nebraska's largest city.

Wind gusts at Omaha's Eppley Airfield, the region's busiest airport, reached 90 mph.
The airport was closed for several hours after the storm for damage assessment. It has since resumed normal operations.
Across Nebraska, widespread damage to awnings and trees was reported, with PowerOutage.US noting over 250,000 outages at the height of the storm.
The Omaha Public Power District, the region’s largest utility provider, described the severe weather event as the largest restoration effort in recent memory and urged customers to be patient as crews started the cleanup process.
"The windstorm that hit the OPPD service area caused power outages for 220,545 customers," OPPD reported Wednesday night. "Some areas have experienced wind gusts up to 100 mph. There is significant tree damage and numerous reports of downed wires. Our crews are currently assessing the damage and beginning what is one of our largest restoration efforts in recent times."
City officials in Lincoln, which also experienced severe winds, reported that power outages affecting the town's wells temporarily disrupted water supplies and urged residents to conserve water.

The National Weather Service office for the region noted that most damage reports were attributed to straight-line winds. However, meteorologists will need to determine in the coming days whether any embedded tornadoes were present in the storms.
"Clearly, the damage is extensive and widespread, primarily due to straight-line winds. We have some reports of 'gustnado' circulations, and we will need to assess whether there are tornado damage tracks within the area affected by straight-line winds," said Brian Barjenbruch, a meteorologist at the NWS office.
Despite the severe weather, local authorities reported no fatalities related to the event.
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium also reported significant tree damage, but staff confirmed that all employees and animals were safe.
The extent of the damage prompted Governor Jim Pillen to declare a state of emergency following the storms.
Wednesday’s severe storms resulted in numerous damage reports across the Plains and the Midwest.
Initial reports from the Storm Prediction Center indicate that most of the damage involved downed trees and power lines, along with damage to roofs and windows.

The region is anticipated to see a reduction in severe weather chances as a slow-moving frontal boundary begins its eastward progression.

Love the list of zoos with bats! One that's missing is Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. In their Kingdom of the Night (which I have linked to), there's a dry bat cave with several species in it, and it's one of my favorite zoo attractions of all time!
https://www.omahazoo.com/mahoney-kingdoms-of-the-night
I could have sworn I'd added them but you're right, I haven't. It's fixed now.

GOOD MORNING and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Payson Tiger!
Payson likes to watch and interact with her neighbors, just as much as she enjoys stalking Animal Care Staff. She favors cardboard boxes and will carry them around her habitat after she has finished destroying them for enrichment.
Species: Tiger (Panthera tigris) DOB: November 6, 2004 Sex: Female Arrival Date: February 7, 2018
RESCUE STORY: Payson came to TCWR from the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, NE. The zoo, which had been her home for more than 11 years, made the difficult decision to re-home her in order to focus on their current species survival program and strengthen the genetic diversity of the Amur tiger subspecies. After much debate and research, they reached out to us knowing that we would be able to give her the same level of care and love that they had provided. Payson has settled nicely into life in Arkansas and is now happily chuffing at the team and eagerly partaking in enrichment at TCWR.
