For a Quellon Greyjoy-like reformer on the Iron Islands, would a marriage between the Harlaw and Kayce branches of House Kenning be a smart move? Would a Westerlands branch of said house be interested in such a marriage, or are they too far-removed to have any interest in being associated in anyway with the Ironborn?
As a Greyjoy, I’m not directly responsible for the marriages between two houses not my own; sure I can suggest and veto, but it’s the Kenningses choice. A Greyjoy match with a Westerlands house might be more plausible immediately.
We don’t really know enough about House Kenning of Kayce, although considering they still have Herrock’s horn that was used to liberate Kayce from the ironborn back in the days of the Hoare kings (meaning fighting ironborn is a key part of their ethos), and that Dalton Greyjoy took the town and took the knight’s wife as a salt wife, relationship with the ironborn historically doesn’t seem to have been good. That’s not to say that during periods of Quellon-like reform, that they wouldn’t be interested in a marriage, which aren’t bad ways to keep peace for a generation (though considering what happened to Lelia Lannister…maybe less). After all, a member of Harlaw of Grey Garden married a Serrett of Silverhill during Quellon’s reign (since their son Harras is roughly contemporary of Rodrik or Victarion), and Silverhill is far from the coast. At least, Kayce is about 600 miles from the Iron Islands by water, so it has some history with the region. And diplomatic marriages with the greenlands seems to be common for reformer lords (though it’s always Ironman-Greenland woman. Asha comments that if she married a greenland man like Massey, they’d think she was weak. Though it may be she’ll have to change that. Tbh I always thought the ironborn made more sense as a partly matrilineal society anyhow). So I don’t see why a marriage with a Kenning of Kayce or a Farman would be a bad idea in terms of better relationships with the Westerlands, if those families were accepting.
