Judi Dench, Dan Stevens and Isla Fisher will lead the cast of Edward Hall’s Blithe Spirit, based on Noel Coward’s 1941 play.
London-based Protagonist Pictures is handling worldwide rights on the project and has inked a series of early pre-sales on the title including Australia and New Zealand (Transmission), Spain (A Contracorriente Films), Airlines (Echo Lake Distribution), South Africa (Empire Entertainment), Middle East (Front Row), and Greece (Tanweer).
The feature will be a re-imagining of Coward’s comedy stage play, in which a best-selling crime novelist suffering from writer’s block struggles to finish his first screenplay. His quest for inspiration leads him to invite an eccentric mystic to his home to perform a séance. He gets more than he bargained when they inadvertently summon the spirit of his first wife.
The project will start shooting on June 17 in and around London. Producers are Fisherman’s Friends trio James Spring, Meg Leonard, and Nick Moorcroft, alongside Hilary Bevan Jones, Peter Snell and Tuni Pinnolis. The project is a Fred Films and Powder Keg Pictures production in association with British Lion Films.
Producers Leonard and Moorcroft also wrote the screenplay with Piers Ashworth. Alongside Spring, the trio are also working on a feature film about Jamaican-born musician and chef Levi Roots, announced earlier this week.
Director Hall’s credits include period series Downton Abbey, which Screen Star of Tomorrow 2006 Stevens starred in, and 2012 TV movie Restless.
Coward’s Blithe Spirit was previously adapted for the screen by David Lean in 1945.

Gwen writer/director William McGregor and actor Eleanor Worthington-Cox on connecting with the landscape
Gwen writer/director William McGregor and actor Eleanor Worthington-Cox on connecting with the landscape
William McGregor’s Gwen has come a long way. Originally a colourful fairy tale short, Who’s Afraid Of The Water Sprite, which was shown at a student film festival, it’s grown into his first full length feature combining folklore, history and good old fashioned chills. And it arrives in UK cinemas this Friday, by way of Toronto last year and this year’s EIFF – all of which has taken over ten…

“Nothing fun is without sin,” muses Mrs Maguire before a game of bingo in Grantchester episode three and – as per usual – she’s spot on.
Sidney Chambers (James Norton) is SO much more entertaining when he’s being sinful, instead of sulkily strolling around after best pal Geordie (Robson Green), making mournful eyes at forbidden love Amanda (Morven Christie), and depositing large drops of sweat on Mrs Maguire’s (Tessa Peake-Jones) clean floor.
He’s like a little lost Labrador puppy just begging to be petted. And he gets his wish, with some rather, er, heavy petting by the end of this week’s episode, but more on that later. Sidney’s not the only one suffering from a serious case of morally enduced lady blues. Leonard’s forcing himself to fall in love with best friend Hilary (Emily Bevan), and when the duo aren’t falling foul of post office robbers, they’re exchanging veiled sweet nothings on the rectory sofa. Poor Hilary is clearly smitten with her new beau, who’s more determined than ever to live up to Archdeacon Gabriel Atubo’s (Gary Beadle) high standards. If he likes it then Leonard will put a ring on it – as evidenced by that heartbreaking marriage proposal.
Tumblr media
Sidney’s not at all convinced that his pal should be playing it straight, and is rather furious when Leonard won’t tell the bride about his previous love, Daniel (Oliver Dimsdale). Leonard fights back, shooting barbs about Amanda at the visibly riled vicar, whose bad mood is rubbing off on everyone around him. Speaking of Amanda, she’s one strong independent single lady now that she’s nabbed herself a job. Not even estranged husband Guy’s suggestion that the now somewhat more friendly pair get back together can sway her from her plans to strike out on her own. In fact, Guy (Tom Austen) even offers to stage his own fake affair so she can escape their marriage relatively scandal free. It’s a welcome change of direction from the former heartless husband, who seems to have turned a positive corner since meeting baby Grace. A baby, or the thoughts of one, changes Geordie’s life too. Margaret (Seline Hizli) tells him she’s had a scare (much like we did when the pair started bumping uglies smack bang in front of the camera last Sunday night) but thankfully isn’t with child. It’s enough to put the wind up the cheating cad, who realises there’s more at stake than merely losing Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) and the kids. He’s not going to give Margaret up just yet, but as he declines to spend the night with the police secretary you definitely get the feeling he’s cooling things down just a tad. That doesn’t stop Margaret contributing to this week’s investigation, which involves two mysterious post office thieves. Someone’s been raiding the local establishments in rather curious attire, and to make things more personal for honorary police officer Sidney Chambers, they smacked Leonard up a bit in the process. The village’s very own Bonnie & Bonnie are eventually caught and their motive for murder and mischief is revealed. Martha (Carlyss Peer) and Wendy (Eve Ponsonby) have both been struggling with the injustice of 1950s patriarchy and were hoping to use their hoard to fund an escape to Paris.
It’s a particularly sad ending that illustrates the young villagers’ struggles with the same buttoned-up fifties morality that keeps frustrated Sidney awake at night. “This is the life we are here for,” he boldly states during his sermon, “we owe it to ourselves to live it.” And live it Sidney the-sad-puppy-turned-boisterous-dog-with-a-bone will, scampering over to Amanda’s house, rapping on the door, and resuming their affair with gusto on the stairs.
Tumblr media
Nothing fun is without sin, remember? We can’t help but wonder who’ll make Sidney atone for this one…

I’m a joiner too @peaceloveandfostercare gave me 2005 (waaay back)
CAR then: I was in university where absolutely no one had a car and you could walk the city from end to end. When at my parents I drove what we called “my car” but was actually their third vehicle—a Dodge Stratus now: A 2013 VW Golf TDI—that end part is important as it’s part of that diesel scandal. VW should be buying it back from us sometime this spring, which is actually a great deal for us as we have put on many, many miles with our silly commute. Looking at the VW Tiguan if they give us a good deal. I feel terrible about how bad we’ve been for the environment with the emissions cover-up, but man, is that care great on fuel.
JOB then: I was a peer health sex educator during the school year (which is hilarious for many reasons—which you’ll see later) and during the summers I worked night shifts in a drywall factory now: I work in research ethics within an university
AGE then: turned 22 now: turning 34
LIVED then: Halifax, Nova Scotia in a shared house. It was very quaint and I loved it. I had three male roommates and we definitely had the cleanest student digs of all time, defying all stereotypes. (I certainly wasn’t the reason why it was so clean!) now: Rural Ontario, outside my small hometown. This seemed so incredibly unlikely in 2005.
PETS Then: 1 hamster called Hamselm (after Anselm of Canterbury. I went to a very liberal arts university and thought this was so clever). Now: 3 cats  Aneurin Bevan (Nye for short) named after the founder of the British National Health Service, Emmeline Pankhurst (Emmie) named after the suffragette and Millicent Fawcett (Millie) named after the suffragist.
LOCAL PUB Then: Freedmans—an old man pub which an owner that seemed to feel bad for me always being there with a group of guys. She’d always give me free drinks! And the Old Triangle when we were in the mood for sea shanties and covers of “Mr. Jones and me”. I do love a cover band. Now: None. I live in the middle of nowhere so a pub would necessarily mean either needing a designated driver or sticking to diet coke. Plus, the only drinking that happens locally is at dances at the town hall with people I wasn’t friends with in high school and I sure as heck don’t want to be friends with now.
TV Then: ER and lots of Mario Kart (that’s on the t.v. right?) Now: Nothing really. Except for Sarah and Duck. Live too remotely to get internet reliable enough for streaming Netflix. I feel like a pop culture pariah. We don’t have satellite or cable either.
KIDS Then: No way Jose. I was a very (VERY) late bloomer. I’m not even sure if I had had a proper first kiss beyond middle school Spin the Bottle. This is why my being a sexual health educator was pretty ridiculous. I definitely learnt more than I taught. This job was also bad for me when I did bloom! (And man, Bloom I did. My mid-twenties were a big catch up period…)  I might not have ever caught an STI but I most definitely made all partners get a full screening before moving into the bedroom….I’m a super fun date! Now: Yes. My muppet of a daughter.
HAPPY Then: Yes, I loved university. It was a huge eye opening experience. And I loved living on the ocean. Now: Yep, when I think back to my happiest times it was during my university years, mid-twenties, and after a terrible dip during my late 20s/early 30s I am back to happy again. Now, if I could just get rid of that commute!
