I will continue prioritising Yiddish, Spanish, Romanian and Croatian next year but I'll make exceptions for travel or if I get that beca santander to learn French. I'm still going 👀 at Korean but I really don't think I should focus on too many new languages but perhaps I will be able to squeeze in a little Korean challenge or something.
I'll renegotiate once I know where I'm moving next autumn because if I return to Ireland I'll want to learn some Irish, if I move to the UK or US I'd want to pick up at least a little bit BSL or ASL respectively.

15-week learning review
Tumblr media
Reading and Writing (15 out of 15 weeks)
Since I reached out to Hindi speakers in search of penpals in a couple of places (namely Conversation Exchange and Slowly app) I've found some interesting people who are patient enough to correspond with me using Devanagari and bookish language. It's been quite fun and I've been able to reply to emails quite regularly. Both my reading and writing skills have improved and I've learned many useful phrases for discussing opinions etc.
Listening (8 out of 15 weeks)
I found an interesting podcast for Hindi learners, All About India Insider Tales, where they make short about 15-minute episodes about Indian history in both English and Hindi. They have a Patreon through which a listener can download the full script of each episode in both Hindi and English for a small monthly fee. This is not an ad, I was just so happy to find this resource that I need to share it. I've also listened to some episodes of विश्व चर्चित हत्याएँ and Indian Crime Story but so far I haven't found the perfect true crime podcast in Hindi or Hinglish - recommendations welcome!
Watching (7 out of 15 weeks)
Another, and completely free resource I want to share is STARTALK Hindi Audio-Visual project which is a collection of 42 videos with complete downloadable .pdf scripts in Hindi. These videos are based on real-life situations and show naturally spoken Hindi, sometimes mixed with English and local languages. I've also watched three Hindi films, finished Mismatched and started to watch Taj Mahal 1989 on Netflix.
Grammar (6 out of 15 weeks)
Because of regular correspondence, I have had less time for grammar books. One of my pen pals shared a great resource, however, for both reading and grammar: a vast collection of online textbooks by the Indian NCERT - National Council of Education Research and Training. There are Hindi and Urdu textbooks starting from grade 1 upwards and there are also adult education materials downloadable as pdf. Speaking (2 out of 15 weeks)
I've spoken to myself in Hindi almost every day, but only on two occasions, I have spoken with a native Hindi speaker. I'm still seriously considering finding a new Hindi tutor on iTalki. I just got a new job and getting adjusted to it makes me super tired on the weeknights at the moment, so this plan is on pause.

studyblr/langblr introduction
Hi! This is mostly an experiment to see if keeping this blog helps me with my studies more than anything.
I am learning:
French (at school)
Nahuatlahtolli: classic / central puebla (at cultural center)
Arabic: msa / levantine
Hindi
Thai
I know:
English (level C1 i think?)
Spanish (Mother language)
French (B1, supposedly)
Nahuatl Central Puebla (A1)
I want to learn languages too: a) get my hands into more knowdlege and resources about life, the universe, and everything. b) Make friends and relationships and stuff. c) Translate! I recently started doing more translations and is a beautifull art, want to do more.

A Brief Introduction
In the first post on this blog I introduced myself as a Twitter refugee… and nothing else. In truth, I am still active on Twitter, and while I don’t think that site will be going down in the next few days I do feel that the writing's on the wall. Even if Twitter as a service ultimately survives Elon’s madness it will be a very different place, with many worthy folk having scattered to the winds, signing up for this or that replacement.
I have chosen Tumblr.
Now that I am here and happily reblogging (with occasional original posts like this one sprinkled in), I suppose I should explain what I’m about and what to expect on my little corner of the Internet.
I have a variety of interests, but in this space I will mainly be posting and reblogging about three of them: language learning, outer space/space news, and (eventually) learning to draw. Of these three, it’s the language learning that will be of primary focus for me on this website for at least the short term, and I want to take a moment and share some of my ambition on this front.
- Language Learning -
I have recently begun the long, laborious, difficult, and satisfying journey of language learning. I have a list of languages I wish to learn. The two at the top of the list are Chinese (Mandarin) and Hindi.
I started learning Mandarin Chinese toward the end of August (你好。你怎么样?), and while progress has ultimately been slow I am at least making it. I’ve found myself somewhat surprised very early on in that it isn’t meaning or writing the characters I’ve struggled the most with, but tones and making sure I use the right tone when speaking. Right now I’m primarily going through Duolingo lessons and copying their sentences and translations for use in SRS repetition. Sometime down the line I’ll be going through Grammar lessons and trying to find ways to interact with native speakers for feedback - maybe starting with a tutor before anything?
I have not yet started learning Hindi, but I plan to soon. I will start along a similar path as with my Mandarin: Duolingo, then focusing on learning Grammar and eventual practice with other speakers - native, ideally.
Aside from reblogs, right now I think most of my posts on here will be questions. Maybe I’ll have comments on aspects of the language (does Mandarin really not have a general word for “brother” or “sister?”) or other things along those lines.
So, I would like to end this short introduction with some questions. Right now I plan to use two websites to get feedback from native speakers: LangCorrect and italki. The first is a place to post journal-style updates in your target language, then native speakers will offer corrections and advice, with the idea being that you offer corrections and advice to people learning your native tongue. The second is for direct interaction, and while I’m mainly looking at italki for tutors, I’m just happy to get good advice and corrections from any fluent speaker.
So, the questions! Are there other resources I could also be using? Are there alternatives to LangCorrect and italki that are as good or even better? Is the Duolingo bird going to kill me in my sleep? Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

15-week Hindi learning review
Tumblr media
Here's what I've been up to recently Hindi-wise:
Reading (13 out of 15 weeks) I've been keeping up reading Devdas fairly regularly. As it's closing to an end I've also found another book/audiobook combo and I can hardly wait to check that out too. This time I will not have the aid of English translation as I've had with Devdas so it's really going to be a test of how much can I grasp from the Hindi version alone.
Grammar (13 out of 15 weeks) This time I've really amped up my grammar studies. I am actually in the middle of ten (yes, ten) different Hindi grammar books that I read one chapter at a time in rotation. I find this method quite rewarding - many books introduce new grammar points in similar enough order to nicely complement each other but add enough new perspectives and details to keep it interesting. But believe me, my pace is slooow with them, it takes me at least two weeks to go through one rotation of the 10 books.
Writing (12 out of 15 weeks) I still very much enjoy writing scripts for my Hindi videos, although my pace has significantly slowed down due to, well, life. Now that I've done 40+ videos and it's been about a year since I started, I can really see some improvement in my writing and thinking in Hindi. I still keep making mistakes and there are some very basic things I just don't know how to express in a natural way, but progress is happening. Going through more pages of grammar books also means more completed writing exercises.
Listening (12 out of 15 weeks) I've been listening a bit less this time than before. I am still listening to audiobook Devdas, occasional Hindi podcasts and Hindi film songs fairly regularly though. One of my favourite things still is to listen to the songs I used to listen to four-five years ago and catch the meaning of a phrase or chorus I know by heart but couldn't really understand before. Those 'oh, that's what they are saying!' and 'I got that!' moments are so precious.
Speaking (11 out of 15 weeks) I had to change my iTalki tutor again, but I like my current one so so much that I don't even mind. For some reason, I've been living a very antisocial hermit phase lately so I've only booked a lesson about once in two weeks or so, and I haven't really chatted with or talked to other Hindi speakers either. I know 11 out of 15 weeks isn't terrible but I feel I could have done more. Not using the language for what it's meant, communication, isn't great for my spoken Hindi skills. But I guess I just have to go with my gut and trust that the day I feel like reaching out and having some human interaction will come. I'm fairly sure it will! Watching (8 out of 15 weeks) I've come to a realisation that the time I have available for language learning is limited (a shocker, huh?) and I seem to be able to focus on one project at a time - if I am reading a novel, I cannot effectively focus on a series or vice versa. So perhaps after Devdas, it's time to watch something and gain some slightly more modern vocabulary too while I'm at it. I did however watch Don (2006) with my son who was just at the right age for it ('wait, which guy died again?').
