we watched hornblower: duty last night and folks i regret to say it but that was the worst possible film it could have ended up of the 8, barring mutiny because that was such a strict two-parter that stopping there would've been calamitous.
like its not that bad. the movie is fine. its just also the title character at his most genuinely unlikable, in a way that does not quite track with his previous behavior. like he goes from :) to >:( in the space of 5 minutes like half way through the movie and he stays in grumpy cunt mode for like 40 minutes and then ABRUPTLY returns to :) because hes doing his favourite thing - committing ruses of war, and then everythings fine, and his arc totally resolved i promise

Jamie Bamber Movie/Tv Checklist.
When I find a actor/actress I like I will go through their IMDB and make a list of the films I think look interesting and watch them. Most of the time that means watching every single movie/ tv show they have been in. Titles with a ✔ at the end are the ones I've seen.

I have a question fans of Frogs and Lobsters...
When Styles is told to put the chicken back, and Styles protests and says “But Sir...” and then reluctantly goes to put it back, WHAT THE FUCK WAS STYLES PLANNING TO DO WITH THE CHICKEN?!

Hey! I just finished the 4th Hornblower film! I know I’m slow; I’m pacing myself, because I’m enjoying them so much and I don’t want it to end. While the 4th wasn’t my favorite, I wasn't really expecting it to be, after the first 3 seemed jam-packed to perfection, so I wasn’t too disappointed. And there was still lots to like!
But I wanted to celebrate my milestone! : ) So my ask is: what is one highlight from each of the first four films for you? Fun moments, interesting characters, aspects of the plot you liked. Doesn't have to be your absolute favs, just things that stand out to you that help make Hornblower as great as it is!
Hello! I'm glad you're enjoying Hornblower so far. I am convinced that you will also like the next episodes. Your question is very difficult because there are really many great moments and characters in every episode. But I will try to keep it short.
Let's start with the first episode.
The Even Chance: What I particularly like about this episode is that we gets to know Horatios character. At first you think he is a clumsy and insecure Midshipman and you might think he's wrong in the Royal Navy. But the longer you watch, the more you realize that there is more of him. He is clever, brave, cunning and kind. In this episode you also get a good insight into everyday life on a ship at the end of the 18th century, which I find very interesting. A scene I particularly like is when Styles thanks Horatio for taking care of their colleague during the fight and salutes. This scene shows that Horatio has won the respect and loyalty of his crew. I love Horatio and his little crew (Styles, Matthews, Oldroyd and Finch).
The Examination for Lieutenant: In this episode I like the quarantine that Horatio and his crew have to spend on the Caroline. I hope the name of the ship is correct. Horatio has to deal with different situations and show that he is up to the task. And bonus: his straw hat. I love it! I also really like the ending scene with Captain Pellew. For me, this is where this "father-son" relationship between the two begins.
The Duchess and the Devil: The best thing about this episode is Archie's return to the series. I love the friendship between him and Horatio so much. It's so touching how Horatio cares for him in this episode. I also like Kitty Cobham. I like her cheeky and upbeat nature, which brings a bit of variety. The friendship between her and Horatio is very nice. And this episode also shows the crew's loyalty and respect for Horatio again.
The Frogs and the Lobsters: A very sad episode. I found the short love story between Horatio and MarMariette very heartbreaking. And when Horatio cried in front of Captain Pellew at the end, I also found it very touching. It shows how much the whole mission had weighed on him. Major Lord Edrington is one of my favourite characters in this episode. I wish he had shown up more. And the ending scene, when Horatio stands at the top of the masthead, is so great. He smiles again and the episode doesn't end as sadly as you first thought. But I always ask myself why Horatio isn't afraid of heights here.
So these are my favourite moments and my impressions from these four episodes. I have to mention that what I love about Hornblower is that every episode shows the development of Horatio and all the stories are great and exciting. Interesting and different characters appear in each one and shape the entire series in their own way. You also learn a lot about life in the Royal Navy at that time. The costumes are very authentic and the sea battles are fantastically recreated. In short: a masterful series. ⚓️💙
Well, I didn't really keep it brief. I'm sorry, but when I start writing, I just write and write 😅
