Your Ghost In Glass Drowning to Escape the Fire
FFO: 2000s EMO, POST-HARDCORE, SENSES FAIL / LISTEN
Your Ghost In Glass is a one man solo project based out of Los Angeles, CA which aims to recreate the raw intensity of 2000s post hardcore bands like Senses Fail and... mostly Senses Fail, if we're being honest. Cameron McBride's first EP under the Your Ghost In Glass moniker was almost a perfect recreation of the vibe that Let It Enfold You brought to the world in 2004. It was honestly impressive how he managed to capture the pure essence of songwriting, guitar playing and vocal delivery which made Senses Fail's early material so raucous and heartfelt. Now with his debut full length, Cameron continues to pen his love letter to a bygone era of music which is held so deeply in many of our hearts, with varying degrees of success.
At it's core, Drowning to Escape the Fire is a passionate and convincing resuscitation of emotional guitar driven music with a heart-on-your-sleeve approach to vocals and lyrics. It suffers a bit from a patchy DIY production job, but the fact that this was recorded by one person in a bedroom adds a bit of context and forgivability there. The programmed drums in particular are a bit of an obstacle to enjoyment. Despite providing the album with a solid infusion of energy, the hits are static and not mixed very well. On my first listen, I found the kick drum to be so loud and distracting that it actually made it hard to focus on the songs. It's a shame, because the guitar and vocal takes are so rich and organic, and the artificial drum tracks don't give them the support they deserve. I found these songs actually sounded the best when blasted out of my phone speaker, so your mileage may vary depending on your soundsystem. The whole thing is raw and imperfect, but underneath the flaws lies some seriously infectious song writing and attention grabbing hooks that will have your head bobbing in no time. Cameron's songwriting is at it's best when it's loud and in your face, with songs like "Pistol in a Pulpit", "Cellophane Veil", "Porcelain Heart" and "Don't Look at the Sky" being obvious highlights for their hurricane of dizzying riffs and intense vocal performances very reminiscent of a young Buddy Nielsen. On the flip side, "Hospice" is too barebones and mellow for it's own good, and songs like "Heaven in Flames" and the title track closer suffer heavily from out of place Owl City-esque synthesizers and awkward religious-centered lyrics that miss the mark in their attempt to be ironic or thoughtful. Still, the pros far outweigh the cons here, as the good moments on this album are very well done and offer a high level of emotional engagement.
If you're looking for something to scratch the itch that Senses Fail left behind in the mid 2000s, then Drowning to Escape the Fire will make for a fun, 43 minute blast of nostalgia. Unfortunately, it's staying power is handicapped by the drum production and a few unsavory songs that you might just want to remove from the playlist in order to maximize your enjoyment. Regardless, Your Ghost In Glass is an act to keep your eye on, because I believe with time, and perhaps a real drummer, the project will only improve.

Jay McGuiness is unsure about a reunion for The Wanted: ‘We all feel weird about making plans without Tom’
Singer and Strictly star Jay McGuinness, 32, on missing Tom Parker, his nerves about touring in White Christmas and loving books.
You’re touring in the musical White Christmas. How will that compare to being in a pop band?
Being on the road with the boys in The Wanted is the defining part of my youth and some of the best days in my life but I really crave routine and theatre is so regimented. You have the same lines, the same show, it’s so meditative. There’s just enough risk that you’re alert but there’s also something comforting about knowing you’ve got a very specific job to do.
You’re following in the footsteps of Bing Crosby in the musical – is that nerve-racking?
There was extra pressure initially but it was because I really wanted the part and I didn’t think I was going to get it. It wasn’t the case that they called me up and said, ‘Hey, do you want it?’ I had to audition and I don’t feel I audition very well.
Nerves get to me on the day. I had to learn a dance in front of the producers, which is always intimidating. I also had to tap dance. It’s ten years since I last tap-danced so I was really rusty. I could hear my tapping reverberating around the room and it sounded shocking!
Who do you play?
Bob, who, yeah, was played by Bing Crosby. He’s very principled and a little bit uptight. His best friend Phil is that cheeky, annoying mate, who convinces you to go out for a pint and then tries to set you up with three girls.
Presumably you get to sing the world’s most famous Christmas song and we don’t mean Slade…
I start off singing White Christmas when my character is in the trenches in the war and then, at the very end, we sing it out to the whole audience as a full number. I know it’s famous as a Bing Crosby song but in this show it feels like a massive old-school sing-along round a piano. I don’t feel like the spotlight is burning into my eyes.
Are you watching Strictly?
Bits and bobs. My favourite is Hamza [Yassin]. He’s what British people love in a contestant. He works hard, he’s friendly and not too full of himself. He went straight into my heart.
Your jive with Aliona Vilani topped an audience poll as the greatest Strictly dance of all time. Do you still do it?
If I try, I end up doing more of a twist, which is quite pathetic! I need a very talented, focused Russian girl to whip me round the room. I can’t tell you how many times I’m out in a pub and people come up and say, ‘Do the jive!’ AndI really can’t do anything other than those two fingers in front of my face! As long as I do that, they join in.
Tumblr media
Do you live in America?
I live in Los Angeles. We finished our last Wanted tour there. At the end of the band, I was listing around and I didn’t want to come back and have to pick what I wanted to do straight away. Over there I didn’t feel as much pressure. I’ll be back in the UK at some point, I don’t think I could raise kids in America, I love the British climate and people always take the p*** and apologise for themselves, which I think is a nice combo.
How are you coping with the death of your bandmate Tom Parker?
We’re all still reeling, so it’s nice when we get to spend time together. Even when Tom was in hospice care his family and friends would be there and it was lovely to sit and talk. Of course, we’d be upset, but we’d also tell stories.
We recently went to the National Television Awards with his parents. Tom’s documentary was nominated. Kate Garraway won, which was well deserved, but we were all laughing at what Tom’s reaction would have been, because he’d have been spitting fury.
He’d have been swearing – ‘this is a f***ing joke mate!’ We could almost hear his Bolton accent ringing around the room. We had a good laugh and went home feeling connected.
Will The Wanted play again?
We all feel weird about making those sorts of plans without Tom. We were a gang and went around the world together and it would feel odd to be doing that now as a four. But we are in close contact and there is a project we’re going to do in February. It won’t be musical but it’s something we can work on together, that will hopefully do some good.
At this point though we’re just taking stock and all of us are focusing on different stuff – I can’t tell you how happy I am that Siva [Wanted bandmate Siva Kaneswaran] has signed up to do Dancing On Ice.

How will you be spending Christmas?
On Christmas Eve, after the White Christmas matinee in Liverpool, I’m going to Nottingham where my family home is. Me and my brothers go out on Christmas Eve and share a few beers and then in the morning it’s a packed house.
What’s left on your bucket list?
I love reading, especially fantasy and historical fiction and I’d love to write a book. I know that I want kids but there are a few steps I need to work out before I get there.

Linda Deutsch, a special correspondent for The Associated Press who for nearly 50 years wrote glittering first drafts of history for many of the nation's most significant criminal and civil trials Charles Manson, O.J. Simpson, Michael Jackson, among many others - died Sunday. She was 80.
Tumblr media
Deutsch was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2022 and underwent successful treatment, but the cancer returned this summer. She died at her Los Angeles home, surrounded by family and friends, said nurse Narek Petrosian of Olympia Hospice Care.
One of America's best-known trial reporters when she retired in 2015, Deutsch's courts career began with the 1969 trial and conviction of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's assassin, Sirhan Sirhan. She went on to cover a who's who of criminal defendants - Manson, Simpson, Jackson, Patty Hearst, Phil Spector, the Menendez Brothers, "Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez, "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski and the police officers charged in the beating of motorist Rodney King. #allthenews
