American Jewish food is most typically defined as pastrami sandwiches, chocolate babka, or bagels and lox. But I am here to argue that the greatest American Jewish food may actually be the humble hot dog. No dish better embodies the totality of the American Jewish experience.
What’s that you say? You didn’t know that hot dogs were a Jewish food? Well, that’s part of the story, too.
Sausages of many varieties have existed since antiquity. The closest relatives of the hot dog are the frankfurter and the wiener, both American terms based on their cities of origin (Frankfurt and Vienna respectively). So what differentiates a hot dog from other sausages? The story begins in 19th century New York, with two German-Jewish immigrants.
In 1870, Charles Feltman sold Frankfurt-style pork-and-beef sausages out of a pushcart in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Sausages not being the neatest street food, Feltman inserted them into soft buns. This innovative sausage/bun combo grew to be known as a hot dog (though Feltman called them Coney Island Red Hots).
Two years later, Isaac Gellis opened a kosher butcher shop on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He soon began selling all-beef versions of German-style sausages. Beef hot dogs grew into an all-purpose replacement for pork products in kosher homes, leading to such classic dishes as Franks & Beans or split pea soup with hot dogs. Though unknown whether Gellis was the originator of this important shift, he certainly became one of the most successful purveyors.
Like American Jews, the hot dog was an immigrant itself that quickly changed and adapted to life in the U.S. As American Jewry further integrated into society, the hot dog followed.
In 1916, Polish-Jewish immigrant Nathan Handwerker opened a hotdog stand to compete with Charles Feltman, his former employer. Feltman’s had grown into a large sit-down restaurant, and Handwerker charged half the price by making his eatery a “grab joint.” (The term fast food hadn’t yet been invented, but it was arguably Handwerker who created that ultra-American culinary institution.)
Nathan’s Famous conquered the hot dog world. Like so many of his American Jewish contemporaries, Handwerker succeeded via entrepreneurship and hard work. His innovative marketing stunts included hiring people to eat his hot dogs while dressed as doctors, overcoming public fears about low-quality ingredients. While his all-beef dogs were not made with kosher meat, he called them “kosher-style,” thus underscoring that they contained no horse meat. Gross.
The “kosher-style” moniker was another American invention. American Jewish history, in part, is the story of a secular populace that embraced Jewish culture while rejecting traditional religious practices. All-beef hotdogs with Ashkenazi-style spicing, yet made from meat that was not traditionally slaughtered or “kosher”, sum up the new Judaism of Handwerker and his contemporaries.
Furthermore, American Jewry came of age alongside the industrial food industry. The hot dog also highlights the explosive growth of the kosher supervision industry (“industrial kashrut”).
Hebrew National began producing hot dogs in 1905. Their production methods met higher standards than were required by law, leading to their famous advertising slogan, “We Answer to a Higher Authority.”
While the majority of Americans may be surprised to hear this, Hebrew National’s self-supervised kosher-ness was not actually accepted by more stringent Orthodox and even Conservative Jews at the time. But non-Jews, believing kosher dogs were inherently better, became the company’s primary market. Eventually, Hebrew National received the more established Triangle-K kashrut supervision, convincing the Conservative Movement to accept their products. Most Orthodox Jews, however, still don’t accept these hot dogs as kosher.
But over the last quarter of the 20th century in America, the Orthodox community has gained prominence and their opinions, and food preferences, hold more weight in the food industry.
The community’s stricter kashrut demands and sizable purchasing power created a viable market, and glatt kosher hot dogs hit the scene. Abeles & Heymann, in business since 1954, was purchased in 1997 by current owner Seth Leavitt. Meeting the demands of the Orthodox community’s increasingly sophisticated palate, their hot dogs are gluten-free with no filler. Recently, they’ve begun producing a line of uncured sausages, and the first glatt hot dogs using collagen casing.
Glatt kosher dogs can now be purchased in nearly thirty different sports arenas and stadiums. American Jews have successfully integrated into their society more than any other in history. So too, the hot dog has transcended its humble New York Jewish immigrant roots to enter the pantheon of true American icons. So when you bite into your hot dog this summer, you are really getting a bite of American Jewish history, and the great American Jewish food.

♡ Pairing - Vash x Reader

Part of the 150 Bullets drabble series on AO3
Tumblr media
Every time I
Look into your eyes
I am reminded of
The stars in the sky.
Vash sticks out his tongue, pen hovering over each line carefully. Well it…certainly was a poem. He sighs and rubs a hand over his face. Is he ever going to get good at this?
Looking up, he sees you chatting with some of the locals nearby. You’re listening intently to a pregnant woman and her woes under a metal awning, nodding and humming to her gestures. You’re a good listener. Always have been. You’re probably sniffing out any odd jobs either of you can do to earn some cash as well.
As if feeling his eyes on you, you glance over and give him a quick smile and wink. It sends his face flushing, chuckling and scratching the back of his neck shyly. Vash gives his own wink back. He looks back down at the little black book in his lap. Leg shaking up and down, he tries to think. How to describe you? How to tell in a poem what you mean to him?
He tries again.
Your hair like silk –
He crosses it out.
With grace like swans, you –
Double cross. (What even are swans?)
My heart reaches for you
Even when we disagree –
He groans and closes his book. This is useless.
He hears your voice and looks up. You’re waving goodbye to the round wife and her skinny husband, calling out a ‘thank you!’ before jogging up to him. He reaches out his hand and takes your own, squeezing it. “What’d they say?” He asks.
“Do you want her life story, or just the help the blacksmith needs?” You grin.
He laughs and stands, careful on his right knee as it aches. It’s what he gets for landing on it wrong. “What does he need?”
You shrug, pulling him along gently as he puts his little black book into one of his pockets. “Just help hauling stuff around. Maybe with drawing up copies of blueprints he can sell.”
“Hm. Good work for both of us.”
It’s a quiet walk back through town. The sun is beginning to set, and it’ll be time for dinner soon. Vash’s stomach rumbles in anticipation. He’d smelled sausages somewhere near here earlier. Maybe you two could get some hot dogs.
You’re on the same wavelength, it seems. You tug him toward the market, where more people are milling about, eating, and chatting. Someone is grilling meat outside one of the shops, and it isn’t long before you both have some tomas sausage sandwiches in your hands.
“What were you writing in your little book today?” You ask around a bite.
Vash feels his ears redden, and he swallows slowly. “Nothin’. Just journaling.”
You hum, looking around at the crowds. “I need to catch up on mine. It’s been a few days.” You take another bite, hand seeking blindly out for his while your mind wanders. He gives it, squeezing back. He looks at your two hands together, intertwined and a little greasy from the sandwiches.
And suddenly, he is struck with inspiration. He finishes his sandwich quickly – he has to catch it before it leaves. He digs around for a pen frantically. Is this what artists feel when they are struck by the muses? You look over at him curiously when he pulls his hand away and takes the book out again.
Gnawing the inside of his cheek, he starts writing.
I would find you blind;
In the darkest of nights
I would seek out your hand
and know.
The tell of your breaths and beat of
Your heart –
Enough to drive me
To find your name on my tongue
In whatever life we are part of.
I hope we are one of many.
He flourishes the ‘y’ to finish the poem. It’s still rusty, but man, does it feel right. He smiles, looking up at you and falling in love again. You look back with quirked brows and a smile. “Okay, you’re writing about me; you only look at me like that when you’re getting sappy.”
Vash laughs. He laughs and laughs and kisses you, so grateful to have you. He won't show you the poem - not yet. But he'll continue to try, to write your existence in his life with the best words he can come up with.

This right here is why I love Arknights so much. The scrunkly little details that HG uses to flesh out the world. IRL, the word hot dog evolved from the Wiener sausage (from Vienna, best city in the world) in the USA, because they use the same word for the little dog.
Of course, Vienna doesn't exist in Arknights, but HG, with their giant throbbing brains, just go "challenge fucking accepted, nerds, we'll show you a reason why it's STILL called a Hot Dog on Terra".
And you know what? It's true! It works! We all know how marketing and sales tactics work, it is totally a thing that could - would - happen!
That said, HG, where the fuck are my shirtless Perro dudes. Give them to me.

Hello! This is my first time making a ask so sorry if it's wrong!
Can you please make a Dante x reader scenario from the event? With the "Fall-Mark AU" prompt? Thanks :)
Aaaah yeeeessss!! I hoped I'll get the Fall-Mark Au ask!
Tumblr media
A crisp cool wind blew through the bustling square, taking a few golden leaves lying on the sidewalk. The place was swarming with people moving from one stand to the next. Children were trying to hide behind decorative haystacks while their parents picked the labors of this year's autumn harvest, proudly displayed in neat wads or in straw baskets. Every now and then, the air was saturated by the strong aroma of hot punch and freshly baked pretzels.
This October morning looked straight up from the shoot of Gilmore Girls and you were currently preoccupied with colorful rows of herbs and spices.
"I'll take these small bags of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and uh..." You racked your brain what other spices belong to pumpkin spice mix, you already have allspice at home, so that leaves... "Cloves!"
The old lady behind the stand in a patterned poncho and thick fingerless gloves placed all of the ingredients in the bag and handed it to you. As you were paying, you noticed a can with pizza spice mix, "Ah, that reminds me, Dante...Dante?"
You looked next to you, a place that was occupied by your boyfriend not so long ago was now empty. He was gone, with all of your previous purchases from the other stands you visited. You looked around when you caught a flash of red near a street lamp. You ran towards Dante when you noticed he was swarmed by two olden retrievers.
"You two are the best bois. I'm taking you home with me." He grinned at the dogs as they licked his hands affectionately.
The sight made the biggest smile grow on your face. You really can't be mad at this goofball.
"I think one of them is a girl," you replied to him.
Dante peered up at you, and his smile grew even wider.
"You think so?"
"Hm. She has a pink collar."
"Guys can wear pink too!" Dante prompted as he picked up the shopping bags sitting next to him.
"You mean that t-shirt with a unicorn that says, alpha male?" You smirked as you both set out to the next stand, finding your way into the crowd of windbreakers.
Dante shrugged, "I bought it for the irony, then found out I rock the color pretty hard."
"You rock every color babe. I heard there'd be a place where you can make your own pizza, choose the toppings and everything."
"Well then! Lead the way."
Some browsing through the market later, Dante bit into his pepperoni-ham-beef-sausage pizza with gusto as you watched the slaughter on the pizza dough in amusement.
"So, what's the next thing on that list of yours?"
You pulled out the hands-scribbled note of places you wanted to visit you made at home and put it next to your own order, the biggest cinnamon bun you've ever seen and a cup of coffee.
"Let's see we've got veggies, sweets, pastries, decor - oh, that wrath I got will look great on the front door - spices, pizza..."
"That ugly-ass knitted scarf Vergil wanted."
"Right..." Your eyes got to the end of this list and you felt excitement bubble up in your chest.
"Now to the best part..." you thrust the list right in front of Dante. Whilst he tried to squint at the letters you beamed giddily, "Pumpkin picking!"
"Ah, yes," Dante rubbed his hands in a devilish grin. "Let's put the little twist on it, shall we?" He made a dramatic pause, "Whoever finds the ugliest, most deformed pumpkin wins."
"Just look inside your pants luv," you quipped.
With cackling laughter, Dante chucked pepperoni at you.
"Alright, alright, what's the prize?" You conseded as you tried to fish the food out of your hair.
"Uhh, apple on a stick?"
"Deal."
Dante wolfed down the rest of the pizza and soon you were prowling the rows of perfect round, plump, bright orange pumkins from which none looked too bad, not bad enough for you at least.
"Any luck?" You came towards Dante as he was scounting the nearest patch of pumpkins.
"Nah. How 'bout you?"
"Nothing."
"Dang!" Dante but his hands on his hipsand looked over the entire patch once more "Don't tell me this place is filled with nothing but postcard-looking pumpkins."
You tugged on his sleeve, "Let's just pick whatever and call it a draw. I boy both of us caramelized apples."
Dante didn't answered you, instead he kept his trained gaze on the rows of vegetables before his pensive frown split into a grin.
"Look over there." He nodded with his chin.
"Wha-oh..."
"That's him."
"Yep."
The pumpkin looked like someone dropped it, but upon closer inspection one would notice that that's just the way it grew. Half of it was green, covered in bumps and lumps. Dante lovingly wrapped it in scarf Vergil requested and had to reassure the poor farmer that that's really the pumpkin you wanted.
When you arrived home with all of your purchases, the other twin was waiting for you in the office.
"Welcome ba- what in the sweet mother of Satan is this??"
Dante proudly raised pumpkin right in front of Vergils nose.
"His name is Shmoopy and he's got every disease."

Are the following sandwiches?? Discuss.
1. Hot dog
2. Quesadilla
3. Taco (soft shell)
4. S’mores
5. Burger
Oh my god Peach I am way too tipsy to answer this, but since I just got home and removed all the gory makeup from my face and because I love I am gonna answer this as seriously as I can and will do an analytical approach as I always do with new things.
Ffs I even googled the definition of a fucking sandwich because its 5 am and my brain is not functioning properly (yes in Europe we do parties till in the morning hours).
Oxford Languages says this about a sandwich and I quote: “an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with a filling between them, eaten as a light meal.” Okay, let’s see.
A hot dog is a long sausage (lol) served in a soft roll and topped with various condiments. Since the roll is bread with a filling between them I would say a hot dog is a sandwich.
Quesadilla may look like a sandwich, but most people actually don’t know that it is not made out of bread, but of cooked corn masa that is topped with corn. No bread, no sandwich in my opinion (still delicious as hell. Damn I crave some now)
Well with Tacos it is the same as with Quesadillas (since they are made out of Tortillas BUT you were asking for soft shells which are usually made out of flour, which means its bread. So that is a sandwich.
The fuck is S’mores??? *googles it* Peach... that looks illegal, but maybe that is just my snobby european ass talking who never saw this thing ever in my life. It’s probably delicious, since it's so well known.  Well let’s put my feelings aside and look at what a S’more is made of. Oxford Languages says: “a sweet snack consisting of a chocolate bar and toasted marshmallows sandwiched between graham crackers.” The hell are graham crackers? *asks google again* Aha… Alright. Graham crackers are a type of lightly sweetened, whole wheat-based cracker that originated in the United States. Named after Sylvester Graham, a 19th-century health advocate who promoted the use of whole grains for a fiber-rich diet, these crackers were initially marketed as a health food. Yes S’mores are the sweet kind sandwich since the cracker is made out of wheat flour.
Yeah for that I don’t need to ask google. A Burger is definitely a sandwich. Except you turn it into a low carb perversion where you replace the bun with a fucking cucumber or lettuce leaves.
I am surprised over myself and over the accuracy of my answer. Also, thank you, I am not drunk anymore. 😂

user emptyhalf good day. what is an english dish that is surprisingly tolerable. pls state it for the record
you know there are a few things that the uk gets bang on. not a lot but some. one is sausages. sorry to france and spain and whatever but no one out there is making a common or garden sausage like the british. most british food is frankly sub-par and indicates an impoverished nation not the peak of western decadence but the british sausage? with the british gravy and the british mashed potato? they are literally cooking with this.
other places have dried or preserved sausages like chorizo and that down. nduja, that sort of business. but that's not a dirty great banger you can slap in a sandwich is it. not the sort of overprocessed homogenised meat tubes my homeland (and many others) attempt to pass off as sausage, not a fucking hot dog, not even a wurst, which is not the same at all, the british sausage is the perfection of the medium. even really bad british sausages (the type that are like 25% 'meat products' and come in a pack of 8 sad, beige sticks squished together from the value range) are actually fucking tasty. big juicy ones that burst open on a barbecue dripping fat into the charcoal. the rustic cumberland whirl and its metropolitan cousin, the wimpy big bender. chipolatas. pigs in blankets. don't actually eat all that much meat and the uk's market for vegan sausages is also top notch, fuckin love a meat free richmond. lord knows richmond have been making sausages with very little meat in them for time anyway. battered. sausage. from. the. chippy.
whack 'em in some mash. do onions if you're fancy. perhaps put them in between two big crusty slices of tiger loaf with some mustard. put them in pasta. you can even have them with rice it's the uk food crimes can't be reported.
other thing is uk can do scones. can't fault 'em there. dunno if my life would be any poorer without scones and can't say i eat them often but when i do i know it's going to fuck.

extra thoughts I forgot about/didn't know how to fit them in
first major thought
Tumblr media
so there's the lab scene where simon and winter king go to duplicate the crown and the same scene where simon asks about betty to which winter king laughs and says he hasn't thought about her in a long time
now we know that because he projected the crown's madness onto pb/candy queen who then went on to be the love obsessive freak not him then it's not hard to understand that winter king no longer longs for love like simon and ice king do
so when simon asks him how he could possibly say that about the love of their life, they're everything, the reason why they're in this fucking mess (from my understanding I didn't finish the show) and then the winter king goes "hmm that's not how I remember it" which is very questionable like an eyebrow raising comment
wdym that's not how you remember it?? 🤨
tbf you can take winter king's words with a grain of salt I mean he no longer longs for affection anymore so that might alter how he feels about his relationship with betty and the memories they shared together
but then also wouldn't he have the same memories as simon?? winter king isn't like ice king he's pretty much as sane as simon is so for his memories to be altered would be kind of weird and I'm sure he could still recognize a good relationship despite not yearning for another romantic relationship anymore
this could mean that in fionna and cake it's revealed that simon's relationship with betty wasn't exactly the best maybe not that it was dogshit but still he put it on a pedestal which is likely I mean with how long it's been his mind could've warped how it actually was or decided to overlook some details
second major thought
Tumblr media
so at first when watching this scene it looks like winter king dies out of fucking nowhere like why would him kissing fionna result in his death??
this is actually the second time smth like this has happened in the show
Tumblr media
in episode 3 (cake the cat) cake is running in the wild with a squirrel goes to a market
at this place she sees all the different creatures simon's world has to offer and there's a point during her song, cake on the loose, where she's playing with one of the hot dog soldiers and as its getting launched in the air by cake it turns into a regular sausage (or hot dog to wtv weirdo says that)
it seems like fionna and cake interesting with magical things/people from other worlds when theirs lack any magic causes them to lose their magic in return even
prismo has given cake back her silly and magical nature and another situation like the one in episode 3 has yet to happen but fionna hasn't gained any power ups so her kissing winter king has resulted in him reverting back to boring old regular non magical simon
him dying can be explained in this context since it seems simon was brought back by a magical being so ofc he's still alive but fionna isn't magical so yeah winter king fucking evaporated and died
Tumblr media

In your opinion (I'm curious) what is the best and worst of the crazy Brazilian food options? I've heard you guys go a little nuts
You did a hard one this time XD
I'm passionate about street food so I think I would say that my favorite among the options is the Brazilian hot dog, which has a dubious origin and so much stuff that you don't even taste the sausage, it's just *chef kiss* and i love it since i was a kid. It's worth mentioning the pizza which also works with the same freestyle rule and can be both wonderful and make you wonder why tf that exists
I also love savory, literally almost all of them. My favorites are coxinha, bomba, rabo de tatu and mainly pastel, this last one i literally ate every sunday as a kid because of a weekly market in my hometown xd, they're all DELICIOUS. Another delight is couscous, this is simply the best breakfast or dinner ever invented and goes well with almost anything (the northeastern one of course, because the couscous paulista looks like a badly made and ugly copy)
As for the ones I don't like, I'd put sushi, which here is often also the freestyle rule (notice the pattern xd) and I never liked it so much (besides being a bit expensive lol), I don't really like the random combinations either, I like fried food but not to the point of eating a mix of hamburger and pizza as I've seen once XDDD
I don't like açaí, I'm on the team that says it tastes like dirt and putting 7263826 things on top of it really won't change my opinion, and this might seem like treason to the motherland, but I don't like pudim (sorry Brazilian fellas but I can't like the texture 😔)
Those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head right now, but there's so much crazy food here that I could spend hours here talking about it XDDD

I'm overthinking again so now y'all have to deal with it
I'm sure someone has said it before but the wild thing about Sonic's favorite food is a chili dog of all things is that it implies that at some point in Mobius' history, the Mobians would have hunted each other for food and potentially sport. Sure there's smaller animals, but the Archie comics and the old games have made it pretty clear that even flickies are considered to be persons with valuable lives to be protected, not a potential source of food.
And before anyone @'s me with "They could be vegan chili dogs!!" Sure, but the reason we have vegan hot dogs and sausages is because we have a very meat focused culture, *and then* we had significant numbers vegans and vegetarians who didn't want to be barred from the foods they grew up on and enough corporations saw dollar signs to push it through. Other cultures that have a long history of being vegetarian or vegan friendly just have a ton of really good lentil and bean recipes. So even if Sonic eats vegan chili dogs - even if he can ONLY find vegan chili dogs - at some point in Mobian history, they were not vegan. So at some point they would have hunted and gutted each other to make sausages.
Which, this wouldn't be the only furry media that has that. I like the way that Chicken Police address it, where there *were* The Meat Wars, and now there's a ton of fake meat alternatives that are both readily available and easily affordable, even so much that a diner on the ass end of town has a few available. In Tooth & Tail takes the whole thing to a head by having you fight in basically the meat wars. & In Beast Stars it's an issue of the black market. But none of those are Sonic and all of those purposefully have a darker/heavier tone, while Sonic *has* to just brush off this meme or else Sonic completely loses it's tone.
Which is *also* wild because Sonic definitely has it's dark moments, especially in the Archie run. Like, come on, "Roboticized folks are still fully aware of their actions but are absolutely powerless to stop it"? Honestly it'd be 1000x more chill if the Robians just woke up like "wait, where am I?" But no, they went all in - which I respect and kinda love, don't get me wrong, but sitting next to Sonic just carelessly eating a chili dog is a little whiplashy, you gotta admit.

We took 3 steps and we were amongst the stalls. A much smaller version of yesterday, but again, all the produce looked so fresh. It wasn’t only fresh produce and street food, there was other stuff as well, like clothes, shoes, mobile covers etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It did get busier. These photos are around 9.00am.
As we walked round the skipper tried a sausage and onion galette as recommended by Patrick. It was not bad. He’d rather have a hot dog!
We returned to the boat and had the globe artichokes that we had purchased from the market yesterday. With beurre blanc. We hadn’t got any Hollandaise. They were lovely. Brittany is big on artichokes, it provides 75% of the country’s annual consumption.
The market started clearing after 12.30pm. As the vans drove away the council lorries came in to clear up the detritus. Noisy, but they left it really clean.
We had decided to eat out this evening. The local restaurant, just 100m away was open all day. We booked a table for 6.30pm. When we got there they didn’t have our booking but there were lots of spare tables. There was a football match on the telly.
At least half the stuff on the menu was sold out. The burgers were all made with cheese. We weren’t impressed. Anyway we ordered food and wine. The wine was fine but the food was only mediocre. Never mind. It’s unlikely we’ll be back. Afterwards, as the sun was still making an effort we walked up in to Betton.
Tumblr media
Steep steps.
Betton has a church, Église St.Martin-des-Tours. It dates back to the mid 19th century and is built on an outcrop of rock.

We had a quick look at the centre-ville and went back to the boat. We’re off at 9.00am in the morning.
