This man definitely grew up on stories about Rimudo (Genbu celestial warrior Uruki and King of Hokkan) and Takiko (Priestess of Genbu).

I mean he has been fantasizing about the priestess ever since.

ALSO. Hotohori basically knew his country's priestess was gonna pop up in his lifetime bc of the shitshow that is his country (and it happened for Hokkan and Sairou).

Okay my brainrot is horrible so enjoy a list of all the Fushigi Yuugi characters and Yugioh characters who are the same to me:

Nuriko and Ryou - due to having a dead twin who shapes their personality and character extensively, also they're both trans.

Hotohori and Atem - did anyone say child kings who are really lonely and want to get out of the house?

Nakago and Thief King Bakura - genocide survivors who want to destroy the monarchy/empire and die in the end, but like they had a point, even if they became what they swore to destroy and went to far and-

You grow up knowing your mysterious tattoo means disaster for your country but it also means the priestess is coming.

Then you remember your history lesson about the Hokkan Emperor that brought peace and prosperity to his land who was in love with the Priestess of Genbu.

And you think, oh, this might be MY love story.

You meet this ditzy girl with a heart of gold from another world and fall in love with her. And she falls in love with someone else. And that's ok.

You fulfill your duties as Emperor BUT you die... but that doesn't stop you, you're now a ghost.
