Operation get new carpet is on track. The house prep for the carpet layers is almost done. Today all the houseplants have been allocated temporary homes for the duration. They are in the big bathroom and on top of the pantry. Not sure son will be too happy about all the plants in his bathtub and I hope we don't have an earthquake.

Okay. So Big Partner and I purchased and subsequently moved into a house that had been abandoned for 2 years. Prior to that, it was not well maintained. What can we say? We wanted projects to work on during our downtime. As if we have downtime.

Anyway, the home inspector didn’t do a great job, and the listing agent was shady as hell, so it ended up that this house had way more work needed than we were anticipating. But it’s good, we like a challenge! We want to make this house feel loved again, and we’re happy to be the ones to help restore it to its original glory.

That said, the thing we anticipated the least was the sheer amount of BUGS who turned this place into their home during its two-year period of non-human-occupancy. Y’all. It’s ridiculous. I had Terminix come in two weeks ago, and I am still finding not-even-dead insects EVERYWHERE. 

Which, normally, would be less of a big deal than it is right this instant. But right now, all our stuff is in storage. We are camping out on the living room floor while we replace the floors in the rest of the house in anticipation of raised beds (mine will still be a shikibuton, just set up on a platform). 

And, okay, maybe sleeping on the main throughway for all the insects that live near the Rio Grande wouldn’t be too bad if we both weren’t also PHOBIC AS HELL of certain insects.

For me, it’s cockroaches. For him, spiders. Both of us to a paralyzing extent. And guess what? The Rio Grande is rich with both kinds of bugs. However, since our phobias don’t overlap, we were doing pretty okay. I get the spiders, he gets the roaches.

Until this morning.

Y’all. A GODDAMN CENTIPEDE. 

A. GODDAMN. CENTIPEDE. Mere FEET from our bed roll.

It seems that, even half-dead, a centipede is the perfect combination of both our phobias. Both of us. Frozen. Taking turns exclaiming incoherent nonsense and shivering in deeply uncomfortable silence. We stood there for gods-know-how-long, just staring while the thing twitched and died on the floor thanks to Terminix’s magical bug barrier elixir which it must have crawled across on its way into the house. 

We eventually dealt with it by using duct tape to collect it and then screaming all the way to a hot shower. After we were clean, there was much shaking out of sneakers in anticipation of the army of centipedes that we knew must absolutely be marching toward our house this very minute. Needless to say, this little multi-legged detour delayed the start of our day by an extra two hours. 

I love this house, I’m happy to be helping it feel better again, I’m enjoying learning new things and working on cool projects. I never, ever, ever, want to experience this many insects again in my life oh my fucking god please help T^T
