Fabergé Eggs

Fabergé Eggs, perhaps considered one of the most famous examples of exquisite and luxurious craftsmanship to this day.

Fabergé eggs were originally commissioned by the Russian Imperial family in the late 1800s AD.

Tsar Alexander III (10 March 1845 – 1 November 1894) wanted a richly jeweled egg as an Easter gift for his wife, so Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé (30 May [O.S. 18 May] 1846 – 24 September 1920) got to work and produced very first Fabergé egg in 1885 AD.

And like Easter eggs you may find hidden in your shrubs or gutters, these eggs were also intended to contain a surprise inside.

Initially, the first Fabergé egg was to contain a diamond ring, but after specific instructions given by the Emperor, the egg could be opened to find a ruby pendant instead.

Over the course of the next two decades, ten eggs were produced for the family during Alexander III’s reign, starting a dazzling tradition that his son Nicholas II (18 May [O.S. 6 May] 1868 – 17 July 1918) would carry on for his wife and his mother every Easter.

The popularity of eggs-travagant gifts spread well beyond the Imperial family, and soon, other wealthy families began commissioning their own eggs.

The eggs then began to represent great wealth and luxury that owning a Fabergé egg was considered a status symbol.

And with the skill level and time that it took to craft up just one Fabergé egg – up to one year per egg – it’s no surprise they come with such a high value.

The intricate Fabergé egg-making process began by creating a design for the egg and then the outer shell would start to come to life.

The team of goldsmiths would craft the eggs out of precious metals like gold or silver.

They were each decorated with intricate engravings, filigree work and other decorative elements.

And while his competitors used a standard palette, Fabergé wanted to experiment with more colors.

He created resplendent yellows, mauves, and all shades of greens — coming up with over one hundred and forty new colors.

Just as important as its exterior, the Fabergé egg’s interior was given just as much attention to detail.

A team of jewelers would work on creating a surprise to be hidden inside the bejeweled shell.

These surprises could be anything from miniature portraits of the recipients’ husbands to tiny replicas of famous landmarks.

The artists behind these miniature works of art were some of the best miniature painters, sculptors and engravers of that time who used a variety of material, including enamel, precious stones and even hair to create their work.

Finally, once all of the intricate pieces were complete, they were assembled by a team of skilled craftsmen to create the final product.

The egg was then presented to the recipient and would become a treasured family heirloom for years to come. 

Unfortunately, the House of Fabergé was forced to close its doors during the Russian Revolution in 1917.

Fabergé and his family fled Russia.

Many of the Fabergé eggs were sold, lost or smuggled out of Russia during this time, but now, many of them are housed in museums like the famous Fabergé Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

However, history came full circle when in 2007, with new ownership and direction, the company announced the reunification of the brand with the Fabergé family.

This new chapter set the stage for a total revitalization of the Fabergé name and philosophy, which are in tune with its original values and spirit.

Lagerfeld Confidential (2007). I have a high tolerance for difficult and unpleasant people as long as I like their work. Your mileage may vary, but Karl Lagerfeld's immaculate, relentless taste cannot be denied.

Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams (2020). Directed by Luca Guadagnino, which is enough to put this Ferragamo doc at the top of my list.

Advanced Style (2014). Portraits of seven women aged 62-95 with truly fab personal style. Top Letterboxd review is seething about how out of touch they are with the real world, which means I am probably gonna love it.

Suited (2016). A study of gender through clothing in modern culture.

Dries (2017). A year-- and four collections-- in the life of Dries Van Noten, who, interestingly, doesn't see the point of clothes that people can't buy to wear, and so does not do couture.

Yellow is Forbidden (2018). This doc about Guo Pei appears to use her career as a framework to understand the gatekeeping of global culture by the West. Dope as hell, if it can pull it off.

American Style (2019). The political, social, and economic history of America through its fashion. Another one that could be really awesome if done with insight and panache.

Quant (2021). She may share the credit for inventing the miniskirt with two other people, but it cannot be argued that Mary Quant invented 1960s Swinging London. And for that we say thank you Dame Mary.

And the crash? Good god. For a second I didn't know what I was reading. Max is going to become an advocate of traffic laws now. He's gonna campaign against drunk driving and he is going to enforce so many rules city wide. Theam redline is going to never hear the end of it. And finally he's going to wrap Belle in bubble wrap wrom now on. He's going to take a leave of absence just to feed her soup. Jos is probably going to be there as well holding a Boquet of flowers awkwardly. Like: here. Don't die. Max will be sad. He won't win anymore.

Salt and Ava:

one day Salt's mother just fucking Appears in wayhaven, hands over a claddagh ring and walks back into the forest and Salt starts Sweating. luckily Ava proposes first. she's probably a little Almost Annoyed that her mother in law kinda semi-spoiled it, but Salt was so relieved that it all worked out fine.

so Ava gets a Wax family heirloom! it's silver, and the design is a bit more artistically interwoven than the Basic Claddagh Design. Salt asks if she wants another ring, but i think they end up just staying with the one ring each

Salt gets emeralds and sapphires in a silver band that's shaped to flow around them- i've seen some versions where it's just ripples like water or where it's leaves, i'm unsure which rn but something along those lines. she likes running her thumb along the lines of it

Nat and Morag:

i just checked what N would apparently propose with and just imagine morag with the biggest hunk of diamond on her finger. imagine it. im losing it

anyway Morag is very plain gold band coded to me- if Nat got her platinum she'd wear that, probably grizzle about the cost, and struggle to wear it anywhere outside the house. she's the one who proposes to Nat (somehow managing to take even Nat by surprise) so Nat gets an engagement ring and a wedding ring but Morag insists she doesn't need two to worry about losing, one's bad enough.

Nat's engagement ring is probably something they pick out together. but for Nat's wedding ring she'd get something that's on the border of vintage and historical, like of a provenance that rivals Ava's Whole Existence. maybe like an original Fabergé. it's fucking insane and she's possibly put on a watchlist for whatever backalley shit she pulled to get it, AND she probably didn't Deliberately plan on doing this but hey now she has a ring that feels good enough for Nat she might as well seal the deal

Ada and Mason:

ooh now i have to think about what a traditional gargoyle proposal might be...

i like the idea that as an act of absolute devotion, a gargoyle will carve a marking in the stone of their body. so ada decides to carve a groove around her ring finger, and gets it filled in with metal to form the ring, with a design by an artisan pressed into it while it's soft. it's honestly EXTREMELY painful and also EXTREMELY risky in that if it goes wrong it could snap her finger- which she doesn't let Mason know ahead of time and they probably have a bit of a Fuss about that after, because these two get very silly when they're trying to be in a relationship together (it works out fine but they're both a little dense in the worst ways ghfhg)

so then he gets his finger tattooed, and she gets very emotional about that and neither of them ever regret these VERY BIG PERMANENT GESTURES (they're such silly gooses i love them)

It must be difficult for you lot to come to terms with the fact that you are simply a bizarre subset of obsessed fans. No matter how much you scream in your little echo chamber, it will not stop Daenerys from being loved and adored. It will not stop her from being the face of the show.  

I know it stings when you see viral tweet after viral tweet of her most iconic scenes. It's probably upsetting for you to know that they created Fabergé eggs resembling her dragon eggs and sold them for $2.2 million. Pieces that were inspired by her sell for thousands of dollars. Just this year, a jewellery brand made affordable versions of Daenerys jewellery. 

It must be hard for you to accept that, despite millions witnessing her burn peasants, she is still widely loved. Only Reddit incels and people who should have been left behind keep you company in the extreme Daenerys hate club.

I know it upsets you when you find out that individuals who possess reading and comprehension skills beyond a 10th-grade level adore Daenerys. I know it keeps you up at night. It must hurt that, even after the finale, her name is the one that House of the Dragon uses to market their show. 

I can see that you're struggling to hide your resentment when you think about how much critical acclaim Daenerys has earned for GRRM. Knowing that both fans and critics nominated the two novellas that focus on Dany must be a bitter pill to swallow. I am sure it disturbs you that the Stark show was such a failure that HBO shelved it after investing $30 million.

No matter how many times you say that Daenerys should be raped and killed as punishment, it will never change Sansa's chances of becoming queen. Regardless of how many times you call her “villain-coded” or praise her much-reviled heel turn, her relevance will never fade.

Irrespective of how many times you edit the text to support your baseless theories, celebrities will continue to reference her, fans will continue to create murals of her and shows will still be made about her family. Brands will continue to create luxury items based on her story and image. The actual text remains unchanged. Her impact remains undeniable, no matter how much you disregard or downplay her importance. That has got to hurt.

A mysterious item has come up for auction featuring the Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich 👇

French auction house Coutau-Bégarie is selling the bluish-mauve enamel and ivory frame. Encrusted with pearls, the frame holds a photograph of Alexei Nikolaevich in uniform, taken in 1911 when the Tsarevich was seven years old.

Even more curious is the inclusion of a large lock of dark brown hair in the back of the frame and the date “5th November 1904” - when Alexei would have been only a few months old. Alexei’s hair colour has been described by those who knew him well as “auburn”, “brown”, and having a “coppery glint”.

Due to this, alongside the fact that the frame does not have any hallmarks or maker marks (unlike most Fabergé frames), I am unsure of whether the frame is contemporary to the photograph, or whether it was a later addition and the inscription and hair are unrelated.

The frame is included as part of items with provenance to Irina Alexandrovna, the Romanov children’s cousin. It is currently predicted to sell at a starting point between €400-600

From House of Fabergé menagerie, here is a diamond-eyed jasper anteater figure purchased by The Walters Art Museum founder Henry Walters on a trip to St. Petersburg in 1900. Now in the museum’s permanent collection.

"This tiny diamond-eyed anteater was purchased by Henry Walters, founder of the Walters Art Museum, on a trip to St. Petersburg in 1900. The House of Fabergé began making hardstone animals in the 1890s and they proved popular with their elite clients. Queen Alexandra (wife of the British King Edward VIl) built a large collection, and production peaked in the years immediately before the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

Objects such as this anteater were inspired by Japanese netsuke. Carl Fabergé owned over 500 of these. He married this admiration of Asian art with the rich Russian tradition of hardstone carving. The anteater is unusual among Fabergé's menagerie, although examples in bloodstone and quartz are also known.”

Fabergé's Les Danses Fantasques -Raymonda

Fabergé's Raymonda Suite

The House of Fabergé's 2013 collection ‘Les Danses Fantasques’ takes inspiration from four of Russia's great ballets: Luda, La Esmeralda, Raymonda and Giselle.

The Raymonda suite features a choker necklace, cocktail ring and chandelier earrings (not pictured). Featuring impressive egg shaped cabochon amethysts surrounded by diamonds, the suite is fit for any Prima Ballerina.
