The Trouble with AIOSEO and Divi
Tumblr media
If you have a WordPress blog, then there's a good chance you use a SEO plugin. One of the more popular is AIOSEO, available in both free and paid editions. And it claims to be compatible with Divi, a popular theme and one I've used for years. The problem is that AIOSEO and Divi don't quite play nicely together. Let me explain the trouble with AIOSEO's "compatibility" with Divi.
What's the issue?
As a general rule WordPress uses the first lines of your blog as a post excerpt. This is what shows up under the image when you share the link on social media or what you see in a search engine result. However, SEO plugins change this behavior. By default AIOSEO also uses the post excerpt in the meta description, which is what this part of your website's appearance is called. However, if you use the Divi Builder to build your post, then instead of the first few lines, your excerpt will look like code (usually a square bracket followed by information that's only legible to the plugin]. And this doesn't happen just on posts, but also on pages. If you don't pay a lot of attention to SEO, and let's be honest, most authors are not SEO experts or even think about it. I know I didn't until I realized this was happening and wanted to improve my search engine optimization game, then your readers will see your post appears to be gobbledygook and not want to click. So how do you fix it? I reached out to AIOSEO's free support through the Wordpress.org forums, and they told me to uncheck a hidden setting that's automatically checked by default and then to check and make sure my meta description said post expert. It did. And when I completed those steps, which again, the average user wouldn't be familiar with... it still didn't work.
How I Fixed It
Beneath the space for a featured image there is a line that says "add an excerpt". If you click there a small box will come up. You can either type in the first 55 words of your post, which is what Wordpress is use in this space if another plugin, like AIOSEO doesn't change its behavior, or you can describe what the post is. For example, in my serial story updates which are members only, I'll explain that the post is a serial episode and how someone can read it. By paying attention to the excerpts in your posts and pages, your readers will have a better experience when you share this information online. Since AIOSEO is one of the more recommended SEO plugins, this is a good situation to be aware of. Read the full article

How to Customize WordPress Themes - Step by Step Guide
Tumblr media
WordPress, with its user-friendly interface and versatile themes, has revolutionized the way websites are built and customized. Whether you're a blogger, business owner, or an aspiring developer, the ability to customize WordPress themes is a powerful skill that can help you create a unique and visually appealing website. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process of customizing WordPress development services to make your website stand out.
Step 1: Choose the Right Theme
Tumblr media
Selecting the right theme is crucial, as it forms the foundation of your customization journey. Browse through the official WordPress Theme Directory or consider premium theme marketplaces for a wide variety of options. Look for a theme that aligns with your website's purpose and offers the flexibility you need for customization.
Step 2: Install and Activate the Theme
After choosing a theme, you need to install and activate it. Navigate to the "Appearance" tab in your WordPress dashboard and click on "Themes." Choose "Add New," upload the theme file, and activate it. You can also preview the theme to ensure it suits your vision.
Step 3: Customize Using the Customizer
Tumblr media
WordPress offers a powerful tool called Customizer that allows you to make changes to your theme in real-time. From the dashboard, go to "Appearance" and click on "Customize." Here, you'll find various sections like Site Identity, Colors, Background Image, and more, depending on the theme.
Step 4: Customize Site Identity
In the Customizer, start by customizing the site identity. Upload your logo, set the site title and tagline, and choose a site icon (favicon). This helps in brand consistency and recognition.
Step 5: Customize Colors and Typography
Under the Colors and Typography sections, you can adjust the color scheme of your website. Choose a color palette that matches your brand and makes your website visually appealing. You can also adjust font styles and sizes to enhance readability.
Step 6: Set Up the Homepage
If your theme supports custom homepages, you can configure it in the Customizer. You can choose a static page or your latest posts as the homepage. Customize the layout and add sections like featured content, testimonials, or a call-to-action.
Step 7: Add Widgets and Menus
WordPress widgets are small modules that can be added to different areas of your website. In the Customizer, you can navigate to the Widgets section and add widgets to the sidebar, footer, or other widgetized areas. Similarly, set up your navigation menus to ensure easy navigation for your visitors. If you choose to hire a professional, who provides WordPress development services, they can customize the theme based on your brand image.
Step 8: Customize Individual Pages and Posts
While the Customizer offers general settings, you can also customize individual pages and posts. When creating or editing a page, you'll find options to customize the layout, featured image, and other elements specific to that content.
Step 9: Use Page Builders
To take customization to the next level, consider using page builder plugins like Elementor, Beaver Builder, or Divi. These plugins provide a drag-and-drop interface that allows you to design and customize pages with advanced layouts, widgets, and elements.
Step 10: Customize Using CSS
If you're familiar with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), you can add custom CSS code to further personalize your theme's appearance. Some themes even provide a custom CSS section in the Customizer, making it easier to apply your styling changes.
Step 11: Regularly Update Your Theme
As you customize your WordPress theme, remember to keep it updated. Theme developers often release updates to improve functionality, fix bugs, and enhance security. Always back up your website before updating it to avoid any potential issues.
Step 12: Test Responsiveness
With the increasing use of mobile devices, ensuring your website is responsive is essential. Use the Customizer's responsive preview feature to see how your changes look on different screen sizes.
Step 13: Seek Professional Help
If you have specific customization needs that go beyond your expertise, consider hiring a WordPress development company. They can help you implement complex customizations, optimize performance, and ensure a seamless user experience.
In conclusion, customizing WordPress themes empowers you to create a website that reflects your brand identity and meets your unique requirements. With the right theme, tools, and approach, you can transform a template into a beautifully customized website that stands out in the digital landscape. Remember to experiment, test, and continuously refine your design to achieve the desired results.

ok so im just gonna pick at fr from a web designer pov because looking at this site on mobile will drive me into madness if they don’t fix it at some point. The rest of this post will go under a read more because it’s both super long and image heavy.
before i hit mobile though, I’m going to point out some things i just don’t personally like in general with the site design (and yes i am conscious that they are slowly updating to a new look)
this will come as a shock to no one, if you’ve seen previous web design related posts by others anyways, but i cant. stand this menu
Tumblr media
[ID: A cropped screenshot of Flight Rising’s Main Menu]
fr, understandably, has a shit ton of links. it’s a petsite with lore and all that, whatever. The thing that bothers me specifically is the length of links and where some are placed.
1. i BELIEVE this counts as an accessibility issue where longer links kinda trap shorter links, goes into misclicks to other pages in the site, etc. etc.  2. i don’t think. the search link should be under library personally ? Maybe make it its own category.
Dev Tracker & Media could go under this category, possibly add separate links to forum, player, and dragon searches with updated formatting
Dressing Room and Scrying Workshop could go under the “Play” category
Forums can be it’s own category with possible subcategories being: Announcements & News, Help Center, and Flight specific discussion forum, maybe more
Library category could then just be: Which Waystone, World Map, Game Database, and Encyclopedia.
Support should be it’s own category.
One thing on the shop category, and i hesitate to say this because im not CONFIDENT on this one, but I’m not sure Custom Skins exactly fits? or at least, it should be Purchase Gems -> Marketplace -> Custom Skins, not between crossroads and festive favors
Merch should probably go under purchase gems, and they should maybe uhh..... i guess change the name for it overall? because 1. “merch” alone does NOT look good with its placement, 2. its another actual money purchase thing and I think those should go on the same page
Along with that, in putting merch under that page, they could put previews of the merch with a button to go purchase instead of immediately going to their merch site (which to begin with it should open in a new tab if its going to a separate site?!!)
then this is a mix of both not liking it on laptop OR mobile,
Tumblr media
[ID: A cropped image of Flight Rising’s Clan Home page. The Bestiary link has a bright red box highlighting it]
Obviously these pages are old, but the graphics need to be updated, and there needs to be graphics for every link in the category-- seeing with this category alone there isn’t a graphic for the Bestiary already. On top of this they need to be in link order preferably. if they had a normal dropdown menu for mobile, mobile users wouldn’t be able to access the bestiary unless FR wanted to be STUPID and do further dropdown menus w their 200 links which would be STUPID and CLUTTERED
also in my opinion the Messages link isn’t necessary since we have the button at the top. If they put it there as an excuse for accessibility, they can just. add text to the buttons. like here’s a scuffed mockup but.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot of Flight Rising’s Messages, Friend Requests, and Alerts icons edited to have Messages, Friends, and Alerts written next to the icons]
for the friends tab, they could prolly add friend requests at the top like they do for baldwin alerts, then have an online status thing for friends below with buttons to PM, trade, delete friend, etc. I think you’re already able to disable the online status thing with page visibility? but like, make those options separate if you dont wanna block off your entire page, but dont want to be seen online.
For mobile, they can just make the icons bigger.
then. i THINK. last thing on laptop site.
Tumblr media
[ID: A screenshot of Flight Rising’s Social Media links with old Logos to YouTube, Tumblr, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, and DeviantArt]
update these fucking icons they are personally killing me, none of these logos are in use anymore (ALSO UPDATE THE TUMBLR THEME JESUS CHRIST)
ok now for mobile. what this post was originally for.
-
as you all know, if you visit this site on mobile, there is literally no form of a mobile version for it. It is just a condensed version of the computer version of the site which is...Very Bad!
Most of a sites visitors are going to be through mobile, i forget the exact percentage, but like it’s almost a given that people more readily have their phones with them than their laptop or tablet (which. im not going to bother with the tablet version, you can apply both computer and mobile criticisms to the site). in fact a lot of my time on FR is through mobile since I’m not at home 24/7 and I don’t tote my laptop around. Playing this game through it’s mobile site is Not Fun!
I like, won’t be too pissy or anything bc like. it’s a petsite and I’m making this post for fun. but also like it was made in 2014? 2013? so I’m not going to be u kno. angry. but it nearing the point of ten years with this site and there still isn’t a mobile friendly version. that is lazy. If anything, if they wanted a site update to be the anniversary thing, they should’ve made that update be
Mobile update as primary thing, because designing the site for mobile is a shit ton of work with the amt of pages they have to work through.
Dragon Profile page update (*LOUD SIGH*)
Clan page update
Hoard update (i have thoughts on this too but i wont dive into it this post)
Purchase Gems page update
Dev Tracker update
Forums update
“but that’s a lot to update” well. that wouldve made the anniversary being a website update considerably more worth it, because in my opinion having the dragon profile pages be the ONLY thing to happen during the anniversary was a waste and a bad decision, because other website updates are just. normal whatever updates. it made the anniversary SUPER underwhelming especially bc the past ones (to my knowledge) have only been major game mechanic updates like the eye & ancients update and i believe? the color wheel expansion was an anniversary thing? someone can correct me on that I haven’t played this game as long as most LMAO
as for how i personally would situate the mobile site. shitty graphic time, bc im not putting too much effort into this (warning this will be LONG)
Tumblr media
[ID: Image 1. A crudely put together screenshot of the top half of a Mobile View of Flight Rising with comments on either side. It ends with the Latest News segments “Riot of Rot” and “Hoard & Vault Revamp”
Comment 1, Left side: “no banner make it a solid color that matches the burger menu. size the logo correctly etc. Comment 2, Right side: “burger menu w ONLY the categories, goes to the homepages of the categories” Comment 3, Right side: “TWO latest news posts, maybe a button to go see earlier news (which may b something to add to comp too)” Comment 4, Right side: “center dates and comments maybe idfk”
At the bottom of the image there is an added “button” that says “more updates button”]
Tumblr media
[ID: Image 2. The bottom half of the mobile view with comments on the left side. There is a put together white box that has the Plague Flight Logo and “plage dom !” written in it. Below it are the Site Status, Random Dragon, and Exalt Bonuses boxes from the site. Underneath that is a red box with “ad space” in the center, with a red footer at the bottom.
The footer contains, “social media! (specifally made icons for site)”, “better formatted links”, and “copyright”.
Comment 1: “idk what they would caption it but the flashy can go here.” Comment 2: “ONE site status update if they keep this format” Comment 3: “probably center these links. i dont know what they use to build the site but im sure you can make icons for social media on just about anything unless this is all handcoded. just. make small icons it takes two seconds and you can copy+paste”]
i dont even want to THINK about how the lair and all that would look on mobile, it was a chore doing the home page alone SOBS
anyways, in ref to these images though--
this is just slapped together and definitely wouldn’t be a final draft, it could use some tweaking
the flashy i refer to is the box that’s above the user box that says what flight is in dom, what festival is going on, etc.
when i mention building the site and “you can make icons for social media on just about anything” im referring to wordpress, wix, whatever is used to format the site. I really only have experience with wordpress thru elementor and divi (so far) so im not CERTAIN about other places but I feel it would be pretty common to have that tool. if not, making icons (or snatching some) is rlly not that hard, probably only costly depending on what their webdesigner(s) charge for icons
I’m not like certain on who does what, how the webdesigner(s) work with/price this site, etc. etc. this is just. going off of my own knowledge. and in general this whole post is my own knowledge abt shit i did no further research to FRs team specifically
i think this is basically it, i’ll reblog with more if i think of anything, but feel free to add things yourself or in general discuss things. again this post was made for fun so im not taking it seriously or demanding for these changes to be made, just personal annoyances and preferences.
This is also my first time doing picture IDs for a post so if I need to correct anything or the like let me know and I’ll edit it in the post!

Are you experiencing problems because the Contact Form in Divi is not working? Don’t worry, here we’ll explain how to troubleshoot the issue and how to fix it.Divi is one of the best WordPress themes out there. Apart from having tons of features, this theme also includes a module that allows you to add contact forms anywhere on your site. However, many users experience problems with it because the emails aren’t sent.Contact forms are critical for any business. They’re one of the main means of communication that your customers use to get in touch with you. So if your contact forms are not working, you should fix them! Before jumping into how to fix this issue, you have to understand the possible causes of the problem.Let’s have a look at why the Divi Contact Form may not be working. Why is Divi Contact Form not working?By default, your web server uses the PHP mail() function to send emails. However, this has some limitations:The PHP mail() function can’t send mass emails. It lacks authentication on the server, which causes some email services to mark them as spam. To reduce spam, some email providers check if the emails are sent from the location they claim to be sent from. And emails sent from WordPress usually have problems. If your email server is Gmail but your emails claim to come from your site’s domain, your emails may be automatically blocked. Some hosting servers aren’t properly configured to use the PHP mail() function. Most WordPress hosting companies limit the usage of this function per account. So, when you use your daily or monthly quota entirely, the emails you send won’t be delivered. In most cases, these are the main reasons why Divi’s contact form doesn’t work. The good news is that you can fix these delivery problems with SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) tools. SMTP changes the way the emails are sent and properly authenticates them to make sure your emails aren’t marked as spam by email services. That’s why even if you don’t have issues with your emails, we recommend using an SMTP service. Now that we better understand the problem, let’s see how to fix the issue with the Divi Contact Form Module. How to fix Divi Contact Form not working? The best way to fix the Divi contact form issue is by changing the email configuration from the default system to the SMTP configuration. To integrate SMTP to your WordPress site, you need two things. An email delivery serviceA plugin for SMTP1) Set up the Email Delivery ServiceRegarding the email delivery service, there are many options out there. For this guide, we’ll use SendGrid. It has excellent features and offers great value for money. So, simply go to SendGrid and create an account. There are both free and premium plans. For this tutorial, you don’t need any premium features so the free option will work just fine. You will need to create an account and integrate SendGrid with your server using web API or SMTP relay. Once you click the Start button, you will see this page. SendGrid recommends using the integration via Web API but we’ll use the SMTP relay method. You will need to enter a name for your API key and create it. Within a few seconds, you will get the key. That’s it for now with the Email Delivery Service. However, keep this tab open. You will need the key later on to complete the integration.2) Configure SMTP PluginTo set up an SMTP to fix the issue of the Divi contact form not working, we recommend using WP Mail SMTP. There’s a free version available on the WordPress repository and a premium version with more advanced that starts at 49 USD per year. To fix the Divi contact form issue, the free version is all you need. The first thing you need to do is install and activate WP Mail SMTP on your site. Go to Plugins > Add New and install the WP Mail SMTP plugin. After the installation is done, remember to activate it. Now, you are ready to start the configuration. In your WordPress dashboard, you will see the plugin settings section. The first configuration you need to check is the From Email address. By default, WordPress will pick the admin email address as your From Email address but you can change it. Additionally, there’s an option to force the From Email address. This means that all the emails will be sent from that address, even if third-party plugins are sending out emails. Then, you need to choose the From Name. Again, by default, WP Mail SMTP will use the admin’s name but you can choose a different one. Similar to the email address, you can force it to always use the From Name for all emails. Finally, you have to choose the mailer settings. There are several popular mailers such as Gmail, Outlook, SendGrid, SMTP.com, Pepipost, Sendinblue, Mailgun, and Amazon SES. Here, choose SendGrid for your server and you will see the customization options. All you need to do is paste the SendGrid API key you generated when setting up the email delivery service. Once you have done that, save the settings. Test the emailAfter setting up the email delivery service and the SMTP plugin, it’s a good idea to test the email feature. WP Mail SMTP comes with a feature to test emails. Simply enter a destination email address and send a test email. If the configuration is correct, you will see a success message. Now, let’s go back to the SendGrid API page and tick the I have updated my settings box. Then, verify the integration and the server will start verifying the connection. It will take some time to complete the checking and when it finishes, you will see a screen like this. Divi Contact Form issue fixedThat’s it! After configuring the plugin and the email delivery service, you’ll make sure that every email coming through your Divi contact form will reach its destination email address. With these SMTP tools, you will improve email deliverability and fix the issue. SendGrid is one of the best email delivery services. If you want to use a different one, we recommend Amazon SES. It is an excellent option for both freelancers and businesses.BonusThe Divi contact form module may not work when you’re running an outdated version of the theme. To fix it, enable the option to receive automatic updates. You will need to enter your Elegant Themes Username and API key and save the changes. So now every time there’s a new version available, you will be able to update Divi from the WordPress dashboard. ConclusionAll in all, in most cases, the contact form module in Divi stops working due to an email deliverability issue. If that’s your case, you can use an SMTP plugin on your site to fix it. We recommend you move from the PHP mail() function to the more stable SMTP system. In this guide, we showed you how to fix the Divi Contact Form issue using SendGrid and WP Mail SMTP.However, there are many other tools out there so you can use the one that you like best. Remove WordPress Sidebar in Avada, Divi & 2017 Theme | WP Learning Lab
Download your exclusive 10-Point WP Security Checklist: http://bit.ly/10point-wordpress-hardening-checklist
You can WordPress remove sidebar using different techniques for different themes. In this tutorial I show you how to remove WordPress sidebar in Divi, remove WordPress sidebar in 2017 and remove WordPress sidebar in Avada.
We’ll start with the most difficult one, removing the WordPress sidebar in 2017 theme. This theme ships with WordPress in 2017 and the customizations are kept to a minimum.
This means that removing the sidebar is going to be a manual process.
The only good place to do it is right in the parent theme template files or the child theme template files if you created a child theme.
Either way, go to Appearance then Editor. In the list of files on the right find the single.php file. This is the template file for posts.
Inside that file you will find a function called get_sidebar();. If you add a PHP comment right before that function so it looks like this:
// get_sidebar();
That function won’t run. Update the file and load a post page. The sidebar should be removed. You may have to tweak the CSS if you want your content to be full width.
This fix works in the 2017 theme, but also a lot of other themes.
Next, let’s see how it’s done in the Avada theme.
The coding in Avada theme files is a little too convoluted to remove the sidebar directly in them.
Instead, Avada provides the ability to set the sidebar for posts using a metabox in the post editor.
This means you can choose different sidebars for different posts, which is pretty cool. And you don’t want any sidebars at all you can simply choose No Sidebar for all of the Sidebar selectors (there are two per post).
Then update the post and the sidebar will be gone. You’ll have to update every post this way.
In Avada, once the sidebars are removed the post content will be full-width with no CSS tweaks required.
Next, let’s look at the Divi theme. I think it’s the easiest of all.
You turn the sidebar on and off in the post editor here as well.
Above the Publish box in the post editor there is a Divi Page Settings box. In that box you can choose to turn the sidebar off. After you have done so, make sure to update the post.
Like Avada, you’ll have to update every post to remove all the sidebars.
Also, like Avada, when you remove the sidebar the content will go full-width automatically. No CSS edits needed.
I hope this information helps you! If you have any questions leave a comment below or ping me @WPLearningLab on Twitter.
