17. …to distract
BuckTommy please!
Prompts here if you want to send one in: Kiss Prompts
9-1-1, Evan 'Buck' Buckley/Tommy Kinard
17. ...to distract
"Tommy you're um... early," Chim said, voice rising to a pitch Tommy was almost impressed by.
"Hello to you too," Tommy said.
Chim laughed nervously. "Yeah sorry, hi, hey."
"Did you hit your head recently?" Tommy teased.
"No. What? Sorry I... we just got back from a call, still kinda... hmm, I'm going to go have a nice soothing cup of tea. Yup. You should..." Chim faltered. "Uh... go check out the engine. We got a new ladder."
"Tommy!" Buck called, before Tommy could consider if maybe Chim really had hit his head.
"Oh thank god," Chim muttered, before scarpering for the stairs to the loft.. "I'll be... not here."
"Is he okay?" Tommy asked watching Chim go.
"Baby brain might be catching," Buck said, wrapping his arms around Tommy in a hug that somehow resulted in them doing a 180 and Tommy's face turned towards the doors.
"Evan, have you guys had any baked goods delivered recently?" Tommy asked, remembering the stories he'd heard about the... incident, with the laced brownies.
"What? No?"
"Okay, because first Chimney was acting weird and now you..."
Buck cut him off, as a strong hand curled around the back of his neck and he was pulled into a kiss that made him forget how to think.
Buck had never been shy about PDA around his friends or family - or complete strangers for that matter, once he'd gotten over the initial 'oh guys are an option' shock - but this was a little more than the PG rated kisses they'd normally share in public.
Tommy barely managed to utter a small sound of shock before it was swallowed by Buck's mouth, his boyfriends tongue sweeping past his teeth and tangling with his own, drawing him into a teasing battle for dominance that Buck clearly wasn't planning to lose.
Buck's other hand, the one not gripping the back of his neck to ensure he couldn't pull away - not that he wanted to - slid into the back pocket of his jeans, pretty openly groping his ass.
Tommy completely lost himself in the kiss. Only vaguely aware of where they were and the little sounds he couldn't help make. He was pretty sure he should stop them, before someone decided to pour a bucket of cold water over them but who could really blame him for his weakness? Had they seen his boyfriend?
"Okay, okay, put him down..." Hen's voice called from the loft. "You don't know where he's been."
Tommy whined, a little disappointed as Buck released him, with a soft peck and a grin. "I know exactly where he's been!" Buck called up.
"Well I don't want to," Hen said. "Come on, dinner is ready."
Buck laughed as Tommy felt his cheeks flush.
"Guess we better go up," Tommy said, coughing slightly, as Buck - whose hand was still in his back pocket - squeezed a little.
Buck unhanded him, or his ass at least, and grabbed his hand instead, dragging him towards the stairs and up them quickly.
"Surprise!"
Tommy jumped, at the shout as his gaze flicked quickly around to see that not only were the 118 there, but Maddie was there with Jee, Karen and Denny and Mara, Lucy, Steph and Mike and his wife from Harbour, Sal was there, smirking that annoying 'we got you buddy' smirk of his.
"Happy Birthday," Buck said.
"How... you were distracting me!" Tommy accused.
"Guilty as charged," Buck beamed at him. "I got permission from Bobby to grope you in the station. I wasn't going to miss out."
"Yes well... next time, maybe not in full view of the bay doors," Bobby said, clearly amused by Buck's antics regardless. "Happy Birthday, Tommy. We promise this time, your face won't end up in the cake."
Tommy laughed. He wouldn't even care if it did.
Hen waggled a finger at Bobby. "I promise nothing!"

i'm gonna add my two cents for the zero people that asked
also i never write up posts like this so be nice to me. or don't. i'm not your mom
i love eddie as a character. i love messy characters, i love messy relationships, i love conflict and drama and flaws and shades of grey. i'm of the opinion that just about anything can make for a good story in the hands of a skilled enough writer. everyone being fluffy and getting along always and agreeing with each other can make a good story.
but that's not what 911 is about.
i'm absolutely due for a rewatch, but ever since eddie's introduction he's been a guy trying to make the best of a bad situation, but can get in over his head with the decisions he makes. he struggled with chris's schooling/care situation at the beginning, and it was after buck introduced him to carla that progress was made on that front.
his grief over shannon's death leads to the street fighting arc in season 3, where it takes almost killing a guy to snap him out of it. his treatment of buck during the lawsuit arc is an extension of this turmoil. bottling up his emotions after this, and the shooting, leads to his breakdown in season 5 that scares christopher enough that the kid calls buck in for help. his unresolved issues lead to the kim fiasco, which results in chris moving back to his grandparents. he follows chris to el paso to rebuild their relationship--yay! (ignoring the lack of addressing the kim of it all) ...but because he's there, he misses bobby's death, and the guilt and the grief of it all causes him to lash out again.
is this healthy behaviour? not really! should he probably go to therapy and maybe address some of this? everyone on this show needs to go to therapy! and maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but this mess is what makes eddie interesting to me.
stepping back for a moment, i've also seen people bring up that eddie is far from the only character to physically lash out at anyone--buck, bobby, chimney, they've all done it in the past. how was eddie putting hands on buck any different from bobby pinning him to the wall in season 1? what about buck spraining eddie's ankle due to his jealousy over the whole tommy situation?
chimney punching buck--i only recently started watching (within the last year) so i wasn't around in the aftermath of that punch, but i do see some of that bashing floating around. i'm not gonna say racism has nothing to do with it. i'm white. it's not my place to say what does and doesn't count as racism. others have and are able to put it much better than i ever will, but i didn't want to say any of this without at least acknowledging it.
the difference between eddie last night and these other physical altercations? the narrative frames the others as in the wrong.
bobby's actions are not depicted as in the right because buck was snooping through his stuff. sure, buck shouldn't be snooping, but that very same episode ends with him and hen performing a welfare check on bobby after he's fallen off the wagon. bobby is deep in his suicidal self-hatred spiral. even the score throws in a little dramatic sting here. there's reasoning behind his actions, but they're not reasonable.
chimney's punch is less in-your-face since the apology happens offscreen, but the narrative makes sure to throw in a line that there was an apology. he's at the height of this great emotional maelstrom--maddie's left him with their months-old daughter, who he's just found out had to go to the er after the incident in the bath--and he's just found out that buck's been keeping important information from him. sure, jee was fine and it was an accident, but as her father he certainly had a right to know. nonetheless, lashing out physically is presented as wrong, even if only as an afterthought with a throwaway line. there's reasoning behind his actions, but they're not reasonable.
after buck checks eddie and sprains his ankle, he spirals in his guilt. he let his jealousy get the best of him, and he maimed his best friend. bad behaviour, and it's all on buck. he says as much! in both his conversation with maddie, and with tommy at the end of the episode, he owns up to his actions! we don't see him apologise to eddie onscreen, but he's pushed to do so and i get the implication that he does call and clear the air. there's reasoning behind his actions, but they're not reasonable.
*beats that last sentence in with a hammer* see what i'm trying to get at here?
with eddie, his actions are born out of his immense guilt and grief at not being able to do anything when bobby was dying. earlier in the season, he snapped after buck told the rest of the team about eddie's plan to move back to el paso, which eddie was not comfortable sharing yet (again, putting aside whether the secret-keeping was smart, to eddie, buck still betrayed his trust by telling everyone while he's dealing with the stress of trying to find a subletter)
but... does he really apologise for either of these? in the first fight, they're interrupted by bobby hen and chim showing up at the front door and taking him out for a goodbye celebration. in the second he flies christopher in from texas as a surprise visit with tia pepa with an offhanded "heard some dick was being mean to you"
chris was the apology? eddie took responsibility? he doesn't even say i was a dick. he distances himself and throws chris and pepa at buck as a diversion. only one diaz actually said i'm sorry in that scene and it wasn't eddie.
i just. this whole thing could play out exactly the same and it'd sit so much easier with me if i knew there'd for sure be some form of payout at the end of it all. if you have two characters that are supposed to be best friends and one of them has buck's insecurities, then having the other go for the jugular in fights like that can't be fixed with a simple "aw someone was mean to you :(" and throwing a kid at him.
and backing buck into a corner, getting his face, putting hands on him? call it abuse or don't, but in what world is it at all okay to put hands on someone like that, in such an emotionally charged moment? i don't buy the argument that buck and eddie's friendship is Like That, or even that some irl friendships are. someone putting their hands on another in the middle of a heated disagreement is NOT RIGHT and the number of people i've seen calling it "romantic" is. concerning.
write him flawed. write him angry. write him aggressive. but for the love of god stand behind what you're putting on the screen.

chapter three of the tortured firefighters department
previous chapter | masterlist | next chapter
cw: fem!reader, afab!reader, no descriptions of reader, banter (because i love it), reader is a math and science nerd, chris and eddie are here, mentions of food, hints of mental issues, proofread by my bye-lingual ass (let me know if i forgot anything)
Tumblr media
LA was less of a stranger now. Who knew going to that dinner at Maddie’s would slowly bring you closer to the 118 family.
Late night texts with Maddie to make her company while Chimney worked and Jee was nowhere close to sleep were standard. Night shifts were smooth as butter if compared to day shifts in any state, you found out. LA of course had more hits and runs, overdose emergencies, abuse situations, but you could type their info while waiting for your personal laptop to run the latest dynamical system you were analyzing.
And now your agenda also included occasional brownie deliveries to the 118 and leftover food pickup you were sure Bobby wasn’t cooking as an accident; a few talks with Athena, Bobby’s wife, about how they could improve response time inside the LAPD with a small system you developed for your old local police; helping Chris over Facetime with his math homework — because Eddie called you one day looking like he just had the worst day of his life, but he couldn’t just understand the process to the results of a simple equation.
It was nice to finally have a life besides PhD and work routine. But that would always be brought up or come in handy for helping.
That’s how you ended up at Eddie’s place on a saturday morning. When he texted you that Chris needed extra help with a math syllabus — that could bring him some extra points that semester —, you jumped on your car and said would gladly help.
“How is it going, kiddo?” Eddie entered the dining room and checked Chris' progress.
“She’s really a genius!”
“And you are the most dedicated student I had.” And you weren’t saying that just to make him feel special. Chris was one of those kids that really put in the effort and dedication to understand things — when they wanted to, of course —, it wasn’t his fault the math problems were too complex for his age. Maybe you could talk to Eddie about it, so he could let the teachers know that maybe taking it easy with the kids was a good idea. They didn’t need to also be traumatized by mathematics. “C’mon, you’re crushing those equations, Chris!”
“Do you need a refill?” Eddie pointed to your empty lemonade cup.
“Yes, please.”
“Can you help me with science?” Chris asked, now that he was almost done with his math exercises.
“Not my forte, but I’ll try.”
In another universe, you would’ve stopped your studies once you had the basic requirements for being a teacher — maybe middle or secondary school. You’d always loved classrooms, and it was the safest option if your Masters ended up on a dead end. You were glad to be where you were, but your mind sometimes wondered the ‘what if’s of being a school teacher.
Chris brought his science homework, luckily just some questions about animals that, because of all of your free hours in museums and science classes you took for extra credits during college, were easy to deal with. Once you talked about seeing the dinosaur bones in real life, he was mesmerized, avoiding blinking at all costs just so he couldn’t miss a single detail.
“Dad! She saw the dinosaur!” He almost screamed when you pulled out your phone to show him some pictures.
The doorbell hung as soon as Eddie entered the dining room. “Be right back, buddy! Don’t give him any more ideas, Brains!”
“Won’t promise anything.” I took you one heartbeat to cover your mouth and whisper, “I will check if there is any dinosaur in town and take you there for a visit. What do you think?”
“That’s awesome,” he whispered back.
“But for now this is a secret, ok?”
“Ok. Pinky swear?”
“Of course, kiddo.”
Chris got up to pick his books about dinosaurs. Your mind started to list all the museums in LA and how many of them had really good replicas of them — or the real ones, if possible. Maybe you could get the tickets for Chris and Eddie and tag along as their tour guide. Or maybe you could check with Eddie if he needed a babysitter someday in the following weeks, so you could help and also fulfill your promise at the same time.
“Buck!” Chris screamed.
You turned around just in time to see Buck taking him off the floor with a bear type huge and messing with his hair. “My guy! What are you up to today?”
“I’m studying dinosaurs.” He showed the books in his hands.
“On a Saturday morning? Where’s the fun? How about video games?”
“Are you done with your science homework?” Eddie asked, closing the door.
“Yes! Brains helped me!”
As your nickname has been brought up to the conversation, Buck finally noticed you. You heard Maddie saying, countless times, that Buck had a soft spot for kids. But had a huge spot for Chris, with all his heart. After the tsunami — you’ve only heard about it, still not in California to experience the disaster first hand —, their bond only grew even stronger.
“Oh did she?” He smirked.
“Yes. She even promised me she will take me to see the dinosaurs.”
“Chris! I thought you would honor our pinky swear!” you shouted playfully.
“Ouch! Someone call 9-1-1, I’ve been betrayed.” Buck faked having a knife to his chest, and pulling it out.
You pretended to have your earpiece on and changed your voice until it sounded like you were in your job, saying “Sir, calling 9-1-1 without being in real danger is considered a felony, and the authorities will investigate you. Hope you look good in orange pajamas.”
Eddie rolled his eyes and Chris laughed. Buck was definitely not impressed, and he took Chris with him to play some video games. You busied yourself with organizing Chris’ books over the table and checking his equations one last time. You took your lemonade glass to the kitchen, intending to wash it before going home for some deep cleaning.
“Just leave it there, I’ll take care of it,” Eddie entered the room and opened the cookie jar. “Are you serious about taking him to the museum?”
“I was gonna talk to you about it later. Maybe? Only if you’re ok with it, of course. I can take him on my day off, get him some pancakes from my favorite restaurant, bring him back by the end of the day, safe and sound. Or you could tag along, I can pretend I’m a VIP tour guide, I might be able to pull some strings at the Caltech museum, they don’t have real dinosaurs, but their exhibition on life on Earth is really good. It’s not much, but they have a few things about dinosaurs.”
“Does next Saturday work for you? I might need to take an extra 12-hour shift.”
“Sure! The Natural History Museum will do the job just fine. I’ll pick him up and don’t worry, we can stay at mine until your shift ends. Anything works for me, really.”
“Great.” He noticed how you held your bag and checked the door from time to time. “In a hurry?”
“I think my job here is done,” you pointed to the two kids playing and screaming over some stupid video game.
Lately, you’ve been avoiding Buck like the plague. He was just so annoying towards you every time you met and it was getting on your nerves. Your small encounters when you were at the firestation to drop off some baked goods, or when you went to visit Maddie and he was just leaving the place, were messing with your thoughts.
It was easier to give him the cold shoulder and keep your distance than sitting in a quiet room with your mixed feelings about the younger Buckley.
“Thank you again, Brains.”
“No worries, happy I could help.”
“You sure I can’t convince you to stay a little more and grab some lunch with us?”
“I really don’t wanna disturb the vibes, you know.”
“You know you are practically family, right? Catching lunch with us on slow days, having some beers, teaching math to the kids.”
“Yeah, but I just… Maybe another time, ok? I promise.”
“You have to stop acting like you’re always on the run, Brains. Someday you’re gonna run out of breath.”
“I appreciate the advice, Eddie. Text you soon?”
“He’s gonna freak out when I tell him about your plans.”
You left the house unnoticed. Before hopping on your car and driving to your favorite grocery store, you checked your messages, hoping to clear your agenda for next saturday — pretty sure you had a night shift on friday, but with enough caffeine, you could pull an all-nighter. Not ideal, but it was your plan B.
“Hey! Brains!”
“Tired of getting your ass kicked by a younger boy?” You were still too busy with your phone to raise your eyes to Buck.
“Why are you almost running to get out of here? Schedule’s too packed?”
“None of your business.” You opened the door of your car and threw your bag inside.
“Oh so you are still mad at me for eating the cupcakes!” Oh yeah, the cupcake incident. That was one of the reasons why you weren’t staying more than one minute alone with Evan Buckley.
“What did you expect me to do? I bought them for me and Maddie, and you thought it was ok to eat them all. Alone!” You faced him, your chin up high. “You have no fucking clue how long I waited in line before the store opened that day, I had a really messed up shift and I needed those!”
“I told you I’d get more cupcakes!”
“No! I wanted my favorites! Your sister wanted those specific ones, she kept mentioning them for days! And you ruined it!” You held the door open, hoping you could leave the place quickly.
“I’ve told you I’m sorry, ok? What else do you want me to do, hm?”
“How about getting out of my hair? Leave me alone, Buckley. I mean it. I was starting to grow fond of the 118, but you are making it impossible to enjoy some time with any of them!”
“I was there first!” Buck was much stronger than you, and he successfully closed the door. He wanted another fight.
“Great. Text me your schedule so I can avoid being in the same room with you.” You tried to push his arm out of the door.
“Now you’re just being dramatic! C’mon, Brains, it was just some stupid cupcakes, I got Maddie some of her favorite cake after you stormed out of the apartment. I texted you I was sorry a dozen times.”
“Maybe you should start asking before eating something that isn’t yours.”
“I don’t know what happened to you lately, but it’s unbelievable you’re holding the grudge for so long. Brains, really, I’m sorry I ruined your plans with my sister. Can we act as adults now?”
“Who are you to tell me ‘Let’s be adults’ now? You ruined the only free time I had with Maddie that week. And you know what? I had a shitty shift with some really bad calls that day, but, unlike you, I don’t go on messing with things that don’t belong to me.”
Your real name slipped from his lips and you knew it was time to leave. You took the chance to open the door and throw yourself into the seat.
“I’m tired, Evan. I really am. Give me some space, I’m still recovering from that shift. You could’ve bought us all the cupcakes in the world that day, and I’d still be mad at you.” You started the car. “I need to go home.”
“I’m gonna find out why you’re still mad at me after one million sorry’s!”
“I wouldn’t waste any more breath. But you know what, good luck.”
As much as you hated it, Eddie was right. You were running away. And you just didn’t want to admit who was from.

🎄🎄 The Christmas Book - A Tale in 4 parts: part 2 🎄🎄
(I should be writing the next chapter of Little Blobs and/or finishing Flaming Delights, but this was screaming at me to be written, so I'm guessing Flaming Delights will be a post-Christmas Hallmark movie, and this will be my Christmas gift to y'all.)
Part 1: [2025]
2030
It's five years before Buck and Tommy manage to get Christmas off together again, and the twins are absolutely thrilled about it. They're four years old now, able to understand what it's all about, and very excited about spending the holiday with both their Daddy and Papa.
Tomorrow they'll go over to grandpa Bobby for lunch, but tonight, on Christmas Eve, it's just the four of them. The twins are lying on the floor in their matching PJs (it's a green set covered in gingerbread men that Maddie bought them and it's ridiculously adorable), their bare feet swinging in the air as they make drawings on the Christmas Book.
Buck and Tommy already glued some pictures to their 2030 entry: Stella and Leonardo meeting Santa (Leo had been very wary but polite, calling him 'Mr. Santa' and very sweetly asking for a puppy that Tommy and Buck had agreed he wouldn't get, not for another few years, and he had settled for a plushie one instead; Stella had sat by Santa's side with no fear whatsoever, promptly asked for a Wonder Woman doll and asked how many reindeer would be taking the sled, cause she wanted to leave a carrot for each one); the four of them plus Eddie and Chris in the ice skating rink (Buck had wisely stayed behind under the guide of keeping Chris company, and had taken a lot of shit from Chris himself for it, but it was better than making a complete fool out of himself on the ice. Stella and Leo had been naturals at it, just like their Papa); the kids baking cookies with Jee, Kevin, Denny and Mara.
Now Stella and Leo are adding their own decorations around the photos while Buck and Tommy finish decorating the tree. Every year they promise themselves they'll finish before Christmas Eve, and every year they fail to do so, but Buck has faith that next year they'll manage it.
"Daddy, can I draw ice skates like the ones we used the other day?" Leo asks, his clear eyebrows frowned in concentration.
"Course you can, buddy" Buck encourages distractedly, taking a step back to check the tree.
Some ornaments are not quite where he likes them, because the kids had helped during the whole process, so most of the cuter ones (especially the mickey-shaped ones that the twins got when Bobby took them to Disneyland the Christmas before) are hanging on lower branches. But over the last four years he has learned to value the process over the results, especially when baking or crafting is involved.
"Daddy" Leo asks again, his soft cheek supported by his hand as he looks quizzically at the page. Stella is drawing the fourth out of eight carrots, one for each reindeer like she had promised Santa, and although some of them look less carrot-shaped than others, it's the thought that counts. "How do you draw an ice skate?"
"Um", Buck says, not quite sure what to tell his son, and desperately looks at Tommy. Out of the two of them, his husband is the one with drawing abilities; Buck can't even play Pictionary without people thinking his bird is a car or vice-versa.
"Tell you what, Leo-bear" Tommy says, sitting down on the floor between their twins, groaning as he does so. Buck smirks teasingly at him, mouthing 'old man', and he knows the only reason Tommy doesn't flip him off is because the kids are there, but he might pay for his comment once they're asleep (he hopes he'll pay for his comment once they're asleep). "Why don't Papa draw it and then you color it and add the shoelaces? Those are easier, you draw them like spaghetti"
"Oh, like we drew in the birthday card we sent Nonna?" Leo asks, and Tommy nods in confirmation, taking the crayon from his son's hand and hastily sketching a small ice skate.
"Papa, can you draw one for me too?! And can I color it with my glitter crayon?!" Stella asks excitedly once she sees what Tommy drew for her brother, and Leo gasps.
"I want to use glitter crayons too! Can we, Papa?!" He asks, and both of them turn their puppy eyes at Tommy, which of course means he's doomed.
"Yeah, they're in the playroom drawer. Do you need help getting it?" Tommy asks, and Buck, as always, marvels at how good he is at giving the children their autonomy.
It's something they're both very adamant about. Buck's read about a thousand books about Montessorian education and found out it wasn't actually about raising sad beige babies, but about not doing things for the kids that they can do on their own, fetching their toys being one of them.
"Nope, we got it! C'mon, Stellina!" Leo answers, jumping up and offering his hand to Stella, who eagerly follows her brother down the hallway and into their playroom.
Buck looks at them, these two little wonders of nature they've been raising and that become more and more their own people every day, and his heart feels full. And then he looks at his husband, dutifully drying ice skates for their kids to color, and his heart feels even fuller, if at all possible.
He rummages through the Christmas ornaments' box, mostly empty by this point, until he finds what he was looking for. A branch of dried mistletoe, kept there for the last five years and that it'll still serve its purpose, he's sure.
Buck kneels down besides Tommy, holding the mistletoe over his head, staring expectantly at him until his husband looks up from his doodle and rolls his eyes, though his smile betrays him.
"I think you're tricking me into a kiss, mr. Kinard" Tommy teases, but he's already holding Buck's cheeks with both his hands, pulling him in for a chaste kiss.
Buck melts into it, allowing his lips to linger onto Tommy's for just a while longer. They've been together for roughly five years, kissed at least once every day (which means at least 1.800 kisses, and wow. That's a lot of kissing), and Buck still feels giddy every time they put their lips together.
"Ewwww, Daddy and Papa are kissing!" Leo says, sticking out his tongue, the glitter crayon box held tightly in his small fist. Stella, however, is looking at them with pure awe in their eyes.
"Awww, I think it's cute, Leo! It's like at the end of stories, there's always kissing" She says, looking at the two of them expectantly. "Do it again, Daddy? Please?"
Tommy and Buck exchange a sheepish look, and Buck's sure his cheeks are as red as his husband's. But who is he to deny his romantic of a daughter?
"Since you asked so nicely, Stellina" He teases, and dives in for a chaste kiss that Tommy happily retributes. The background noise is Stella's cheering and Leo's exclaiming 'Grossss', and Buck thinks that if people could explode from happiness, he'd be at serious danger.
"Okay, can we pleaseeee put the star now?" Leo asks once they're apart, and Buck remember he had promised to put the star under the kids' watchful gaze.
"C'mon, mini-menaces, sit here on my lap so we can watch Daddy put the star, and then you can finish your drawing"
"And then it's bedtime" Buck finishes while he rummages the box to get their trusted star out. "Or else Santa won't bring any presents to this house"
@bidisasterevankinard @unhingedangstaddict @silversky9 @music-is-the-voice-of-the-soul
The threat of no presents is enough to get the kids nodding, and they scamper to sit on Tommy's knees, eagerly watching Buck. This tree is not as tall as their last one, and he won't need the ladder to place the star on top of it. They know the twins would love to help, but their coordination is not that good yet, and both Buck and Tommy have answered enough calls of children hurt by Christmas trees falling on top of them to be properly paranoid. Maybe in a few years.
For now, they are happy to snuggle into their Papa's broad chest and look in awe as their tall strong Daddy places the star on top of the tree. As Buck does that, his eyes keeps drifting to his perfect little family, and he realizes that the three stars he needs are right there.

What fic tropes do you most want to see for bucktommy?
big fan of hurt/comfort and some angst, which i think we will get.
i want them to be settled in their relationship and be solid and be each other's home, and then comes the angst, but not in a way that threatens their relationship, more like: one of them gets hurt on the job for physical hurt/comfort - i would love to see tommy get hurt actually, and buck stays at his place to take care of him; proof that this capable brickhouse of a guy is not invincible. and he struggles to let himself be taken care of, and evan helps him realise that he has people who care about him - not just buck; maybe eddie visits! chim! hen! he's been on his own for so long he's quite self sufficient but buck isn't having it; this allows for some first fight potential, where tommy insists he can do it himself (bc he doesn't want to be a burden or seem weak) and buck being frustrated and a little hurt that tommy doesn't want him in his space or want his help, which makes buck feel like he's being too much and caring too much.. but they work it out! but maybe before they do we get chim/hen/eddie paying tommy a visit to check on him but moreover spend time with him and also talk things out a bit; tommy realising it's okay to let people in (chim would be perfect for this callback).
and tommy dealing with his asshole father for some emotional hurt/comfort - i just really want to see a less coolcalmcollected tommy, and i think buck seeing that and being there for him and tommy realising he has someone to lean on will strengthen their relationship.
and early season 8 with gerrard in charge is perfect for some emotional support and understanding: tommy being there for buck as he vents. and tommy confronting gerrard (not just about his treatment of evan and the 118 but about who he is and how he does not deserve to be a captain at all) which doesn't go well and brings up a lot of issues for tommy (his past self, his father and upbringing, etc) and results in him being riled and losing some of that cool calm composure buck is so used to - maybe we get buck finding tommy at the gym, or tommy and eddie doing muay thai because tommy needs the release. and eventually we get buck calming him down or tommy running out of steam and breaking down a little.
(this is all very tommy-centric i know, i just want more of him! more screentime! more emotional variation! more character and relationship growth!)
and as much as i want them to be a solid couple, i want there to be moments of uncertainty: jealous buck when he sees tommy is friendly with one of his exes or sees a guy flirting with tommy. tommy being so sure about a future with evan -has never been more sure of anyone in his life- but holding himself back because he doesn't want to move too fast for both their sakes - but he opens up by the end of the ep and it culminates in him asking evan to move in with him.
open and honest communication is integral to their relationship so i don't really want to see any secret keeping, but i could see one of them keeping a secret about the gerrard/ortiz drama to spare the other one worry or to keep them out of the crosshairs. but it won't be a lingering issue, preferably sorted in an ep or two.
also just: gimme friendship for tommy! gimme tommy and chim and hen and eddie hanging out (separately or together) because we know they're friends. gimme tommy and karen, tommy and maddie brunch dates - with jee! gimme tommy babysitting jee and the others! would also love to see some of tommy's coworkers and friends. basically let tommy have some platonic relationships because it's important to show he has a place in the 118 extended family even when evan isn't in the mix, and that he has a life outside the 118 too.
since tommy is a first responder i think it's a safe bet we'll see him working with the 118 at some point - lafd is linked from the streets to the skies - maybe buck doing a rope rescue out of the chopper or tommy rescuing buck and some civilians from a cliffside or highrise. maybe the 118 responding to a chopper crash. so many scenarios they could give us, and i want tommy working with the rest of the 118, too.

Choosing the Best CBSE School in Sharjah: What Every Parent Needs to Consider
Tumblr media
Moving or settling in a new city, such as Sharjah, is a roller coaster ride of excitement, apprehension, and unlimited choices. But for Indian parents, there is one decision that seems to take precedence over all others—what school would be the ideal place for my child?
Deciding on the ideal CBSE school in Sharjah isn't simply an academic choice. It's about making your child feel secure, nurtured, and motivated on a day-to-day basis. And that is a personal choice.
If you're feeling overwrought, don't worry. Here's an honest and down-to-earth guide to support you in making the best decision, with clarity and certainty.
1. Begin with Your Child, Not the Brochure
Before checking school rankings or reviews, take a moment and reflect on your child.
Is your child timid and requires a nurturing setting? Or are they most enthusiastic about group activities and require a setting where they can express themselves and work together? Each child is different, and the proper school will acknowledge that.
Parents usually look at infrastructure and reputation, but the social and emotional climate is equally important. The school that treats your child as an individual and not a roll number is the one to find.
2. Knowing the CBSE Advantage
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has a reputation for having a syllabus framework, conceptual study, and an emphasis on academics. But it's more than that too.
Best CBSE schools in Sharjah assist children:
Prepare for Indian competitive exams (such as NEET or JEE)
Either ease back into school smoothly if families relocate to India
Develop a strong academic background while continuing to provide sports, arts, and extracurricular activities
If the long-term goal is education in India or an Indian curriculum overseas, picking from the best CBSE schools in Sharjah is a tried and trusted route.
3. Research Matters, But Visit in Person Too
Online investigation is a good beginning. Check KHDA or MOE inspection results, school websites, and parent forums. But don't look any further—go visit the schools if you can.
As you enter a school, notice:
Are the kids smiling and involved?
Are the teachers friendly and responsive?
Is the campus clean, secure, and kid-friendly?
Trust your gut. If a school "feels right," it likely is.
4. Talk to Other Parents
No one understands your concerns better than another parent. Try to connect with families whose children are already studying in the schools you’re considering.
Ask about:
Teacher support and communication
Academic pressure and homework load
How the school handles bullying or provides emotional support
Transport safety and school-parent engagement
These conversations often reveal what websites don’t.
5. Class Size, Teaching Style, and Curriculum Delivery
Low student-teacher ratio is crucial, particularly in the primary sections where kids require extra attention. 20–25 students per class schools are more interactive.
Inquire about how the school addresses:
Learning support for slow learners
Enrichment for high achievers
Project and digital learning
Exams and stress coping in older children
One of the best CBSE schools in Sharjah won't only educate—it will guide and build up.
6. Location, Transportation, and Daily Logistics
It may not seem significant initially, but a lengthy travel time each day can exhaust you and your child. Opt for a school that offers proximity from where you reside or has dependable, secure transportation.
Also, ensure that the school has:
Medical assistance on premises
CCTV and secure entrance systems
Friendly, trained bus monitors
7. Fee Transparency and Value for Money
Education is a form of investment, but it ought to be transparent and affordable as well. Demand a clear outline of:
Tuition fees
Book and uniform charges
Fees for activities
Fees for the bus
Ensure that there are no surprise costs that come your way.
Last Thoughts: More Than an Education
Selecting a CBSE school in Sharjah is about more than education. It's about creating a second family for your child—a place where they'll grow, learn, make friends, and discover who they are.
As a parent, your decision will determine not only their school life, but also their life.
So breathe, trust your gut, do your research, and pick from the top CBSE schools in Sharjah—those that make your child feel heard, seen, and inspired.

How to Prepare for IIT-JEE and Board Exams Together
Tumblr media
Exams are an important part of our lives. There are many types of exams. However, the most important exams for Indian students are the final exams for Grade 12 and the entrance exams. Both are important for their futures. The Grade 12 Board exams evaluate school studies, whereas entrance exams such as the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) are important for applicants who wish to pursue careers in engineering and technology. This implies that the applicants need to have a good strategy of preparation for both examinations at the same time.
Additionally, good results can be achieved in both with appropriate preparation strategies. In this article, we shall present some easy tips to get you high scores in both the board exams and the IIT-JEE.
Tips on preparing for the IIT-JEE and Board together.
I will give you some tips on how to prepare for the IIT-JEE and grade 12 board exams together.
Understanding the Syllabus and Exam Format
Before you start preparing for your exams, it is important to understand the exam structure and syllabus for both. The JEE Main syllabus typically covers topics from Grades 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. To avoid confusion, thoroughly understand the detailed syllabus and exam pattern for your specific Board exams and the JEE (Main and Advanced). Simultaneous preparation can be time-efficient due to significant syllabus overlap.
To study well, proper planning is very important.
Developing a clear strategy is the foundational step. Time should be an asset, not a liability. Plan your daily schedule and prioritise each subject. Effective time management is crucial. Therefore, be meticulous in your planning. Consider writing your plan down and keeping it visible, for instance, at your study desk. Set realistic goals that are within your capabilities, though occasionally challenging yourself can help gauge and improve your abilities. Incorporate regular breaks into your schedule, especially after long study sessions, to recharge before resuming.
Understand the basic principles and theories.
To score well in both exams, it's important to have a solid understanding of the core content covered in each chapter. The fundamental concepts for most topics are the same for both the Board exams and the IIT-JEE. This overlap facilitates a unified understanding. The application of concepts in JEE (especially Advanced) tends to be more complex and analytical. NCERT books provide an excellent theoretical foundation and help bridge the gap between basic understanding and more challenging JEE-level questions. Maintain a separate notebook for important formulas from each topic and refer to it regularly during your IIT-JEE preparation.
Set Daily Goals
The best way to stay on track is to set daily goals. Assign yourself a mix of complex and simpler topics daily, aiming for completion by the end of the day. You can create these lists in a notebook or use a mobile app. Track your progress by checking off achieved goals daily. When you complete significant tasks, acknowledge your success with a small reward, such as watching a favourite movie or TV show briefly. This can help maintain motivation and reduce procrastination.
Covers All Topics in the Course
Students should aim not to miss any topics while preparing for the IIT-JEE and their Grade 12 Board exams. JEE Advanced has qualifying cutoffs for each subject, underscoring the need for balanced preparation across all areas. Reviewing previous years' question papers for both exams can highlight the range of topics covered. Therefore, it's important to aim for comprehensive preparation. If you get stuck on a problem or concept, seek help from your teachers or knowledgeable friends. As mentioned, the core syllabus for both exams has a significant overlap. The JEE often tests concepts with greater rigour and complexity. But the fundamental principles remain the same. Visit the official JEE website for the latest syllabus and information.
Dedication
It is important to stay focused throughout your exam preparation. Preparing for both the IIT-JEE and Board exams simultaneously can be demanding. Students often feel stressed and demotivated during this period. Feeling stressed is normal, but it's important to manage it effectively and continue your preparation. When stressed, talk to supportive friends or family members; maintaining good relationships can be a source of strength.
Practice makes perfect.
To succeed in competitive exams like IIT-JEE, daily problem-solving practice, especially in Mathematics and Physics, is essential. Competitive exams like the IIT-JEE contain multiple-choice and numerical questions. Proficiency in these question types is best developed through consistent practice. Both Mathematics and Physics heavily feature numerical problems. Practising math problems in these two subjects every day will help you solve math problems with confidence and ease in the exam hall.
Understanding the Latest Exam Format
Preparing for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics for two different exam formats (JEE and Boards) requires a strategic approach. The JEE (Main and Advanced) primarily features multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and numerical answer-type questions, focusing on analytical skills and application of concepts. In contrast, Grade 12 Board exams often include descriptive, subjective questions requiring detailed explanations and theoretical recall. To bridge this gap, balance your preparation: practise objective questions extensively for IIT-JEE, and also focus on theory and answer-writing skills for Board exams.
Write Notes
Creating effective notes is crucial for performing well in the IIT-JEE exam. The syllabus for these competitive exams is so comprehensive that students may forget the concepts they have learned. Therefore, prepare concise notes when studying new chapters or topics. This will save considerable time during revision.
Practice Mock Tests
Practice with mock tests and previous years' exams. This will help you familiarise yourself with the nature of both exams. Stick to your schedule and avoid distractions. It is advisable to practise previous years' exam questions to prepare better. You will gain maximum benefit by taking mock tests under timed, exam-like conditions. After assessing your performance, try to improve your weak areas. If you're lacking in a subject, you should spend more time on it. If you struggle to master a subject, seek guidance from your teachers.
Reducing Stress
In addition to studying for your upcoming exam, you can also schedule time for healthy activities such as meditation, walking, and exercise. You can also listen to music. These activities help relieve stress and help you feel relaxed. Overall, your preparation will improve. You'll be ready to take the exam with a calm and clear mind.
Summary
With both the Class 12 Board exams and the JEE Advanced occurring within a relatively short span, candidates must strive for optimal performance in both. Knowing how to balance preparation for Board exams and IIT-JEE simultaneously can significantly enhance a candidate's results. Many effective study techniques, such as disciplined scheduling and focused study blocks (similar to the Pomodoro Technique's principles), are beneficial for both. A well-thought-out, balanced approach is key to navigating this demanding period successfully.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does IIT require a minimum score of 75%?
For admission to IITs (and NITs/IIITs/CFTIs) through JEE Advanced, candidates typically need to either be in the top 20 percentile of their respective Grade 12 Board or secure a minimum percentage (e.g., 75% for General/OBC-NCL, 65% for SC/ST/PwD). These criteria can sometimes be revised, so it's crucial to check the official JEE Advanced information brochure for the specific year of examination.
How do Board exam scores and JEE scores contribute to IIT admissions?
JEE Advanced rank is the primary determinant for admission to IITs. However, Grade 12 Board exam performance is crucial for meeting the eligibility criteria for the entrance exam.
Can one prepare for JEE effectively while attending a regular school?
Every year, many students successfully clear the IIT-JEE exam while attending regular school. To manage both, it's important to align school studies with the IIT-JEE syllabus as much as possible and maintain a disciplined schedule. With effective preparation, succeeding in the IIT-JEE on the first attempt is achievable.
Which board is best for IIT-JEE preparation?
Many students find the CBSE board advantageous because its syllabus (based on NCERT) aligns closely with the foundational concepts required for JEE, particularly in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. A strong grasp of these core subjects is vital for success in the IIT-JEE.

Is hiring an IIT JEE home tutor better than joining a coaching institute?
Answer:  Finding a good IIT JEE home tutor for Physics and Maths can really shape your preparation strategy—especially if you're someone who learns best through personalized attention.
Here’s how you can go about it, step by step:
1. Look for Subject Specialization
Don’t settle for a general tutor who teaches all subjects. IIT JEE demands subject-matter expertise—especially in Physics and Maths, where concepts are deep and application-based.
👉 Real-life tip: My cousin Ayush was struggling with Calculus and Mechanics in Class 11. He found an IIT JEE home tutor through a tutoring platform who had cleared JEE himself and focused only on Maths and Physics. Within 3 months, his confidence and accuracy improved massively.
2. Use a Trusted Platform
Instead of randomly browsing classifieds or Facebook groups, try reliable platforms like HomeShiksha. They specialize in connecting students with verified, experienced IIT JEE tutors who come to your home.
These platforms often allow you to:
Filter tutors by subject and location
Check credentials (like JEE ranks, qualifications)
Read reviews
Schedule demo classes
3. Ask for a Trial Class
A demo session helps you assess the tutor’s teaching style. See if they can simplify tough concepts, provide good examples, and help with problem-solving techniques. The right IIT JEE home tutor will also identify your weak areas and suggest how to improve them.
4. Check for Concept Clarity + Exam Strategy
A good tutor won’t just teach you formulas—they’ll train you in:
Time management
Solving previous year questions
Avoiding common mistakes
Applying concepts under pressure
If the tutor offers regular tests and performance feedback, that’s a big plus.
5. Don’t Ignore Communication & Compatibility
Sometimes, even a highly qualified tutor may not click with your learning style. Choose someone who is patient, approachable, and responsive to your doubts—especially for tricky topics like Rotation, Thermodynamics, or Coordinate Geometry.
Final Thought:
Investing in a focused IIT JEE home tutor for Physics and Maths can give you a serious edge over group coaching. The one-on-one attention, customized pace, and direct mentorship often lead to better results and less stress.
If you’re not sure where to start, I’d recommend checking out HomeShiksha—they have location-based matching, verified tutors, and options for both online and offline sessions.
Hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you want specific tutor recommendations based on your city 😊
