Hey, that’s an interesting idea. I’m sure you’ll have fun if you come here to study. I know less about this than you might expect -since I was a UK applcant I went though the process without worrying about how people apply from abroad - though when I looked into it for some cousins it seemed difficult for them. Where you’re coming from seems to matter a lot. Most of the UK med schools use the UCAS application system - there are around 32ish normal medical schools in the UK. The UCAS website should list their grade requirements in US terms. When it comes to prices, the individual universities should have contact details for their admissions department, and their international tuition fees should be available on their website or on request. It’ll be higher than what we pay in the UK, but who knows? I don’t know if it’s anywhere close to what you pay in the US. If you’re not sure of how to apply to them, I’d recommend emailing their admissions departments and asking. There are a few new private med schools, I suspect you’d need to apply to them directly. I’m not sure of their credentials because they weren’t around when I was at med school, and I mention them only for completion. Good luck!

I was really similar to you. Not many people from my school apply and honestly the UK application system is a bit of a mystery and even worse is the system of applying to Cambridge. I applied for Natural Sciences so there will be differences, for example I was required to take a pre-admissions test whilst for english they would probably require academic work instead.

So, here goes a condensed list of applying to Cambridge for someone who has absolutely no idea!

UCAS

To apply anywhere in the UK you need to do it through UCAS. You can apply to 5 or less universities and only one of Cambridge or Oxford (unless you want to be an organ scholar I think?). You usually apply through your school so get your teacher/ college counselor/ principle involved. You need one reference, a personal statement, and records of your grades.

Your Personal Statement

This is super important for someone studying english!! Less so for me, but you really need to think carefully about this. I’m going to admit my statement was awful, but there’s lots of great examples online and watch a lot of youtube videos of people giving advice on their personal statements. Basically, this is an opportunity for you to write why you love the course you’re applying for, why you’re a good fit for it, and examples of how you’ve engaged with it (reading, courses, etc).

Deadline:

Get your application in by October 15th! Cambridge has an earlier application than most UK schools.

Picking a college

This is going to be where you live, eat, and have supervisions for the next 3 years. It’s a huge part of your experience as you don’t usually have much contact with your university outside of exams or lectures. Your college sorta is your university, as you pay fees to it and they decide to accept you (not the university).

Both in your UCAS application and in something that you will be send by email afterwards called the SAQ, you need to pick a college. Pick one you like! It might be worth looking into rents/scholarships if that’s something that you’re interested in. Stay away from “Playing the game” by applying to a ‘bad’ college for a better chance to get in. Cambridge has a pool (basically if you don’t get into your first college another one can take you).

You can also choose to apply to no college, where you’ll be randomly allocated. I didn’t do this mainly because if you identify as female (or non binary) on your application you could be pooled into an all girls college, which are great but not the experience some people want for uni.

Admissions Tests

Some subjects do this. You take an admissions test in November. You can do this at a test centre, but this usually costs money. Ask your school to become a test centre. It’s really easy and all you need is a test room, a teacher free to invigilate, and a lockable cupboard to put the exams in.

Interviews

If you have the grades, you will usually be invited to a Cambridge interview. This is super expensive because they sometimes don’t tell you about your interview date until a week or two before, and you have to pay for flights yourself. I think some colleges offer up to 80 pounds on travel, but it depends on where you apply.

Interviews vary by college. In english I hear they ask you to read an article and discuss it, and also go over your written work you sent in. I’m planning on doing an interview help post later!

Offer

In January (there’s a specific day and all colleges use this day) you hear if you have a place. The UK works on offers, so they’ll usually ask you to graduate with certain grades. My offer in the IB was 42 points with a 776 in Chemistry, Biology, and Maths at HL. Some offers are higher and some lower, it depends on the college and the person.

Note, by sometimes in May? (I think) you have to pick 2 universities that you want to go to. One becomes your “main” which you go to if you get the grades and the other your ‘insurance’ which you go to if you don’t meet the grades of the first one but meet the second. So usually, you pick a second uni with a lower offer.

Your results

When your results come out you either meet your offer (yay!) or you don’t. If you just miss your offer you could be put into the ‘summer pool.’ Note your college would tell you if you were int he pool though. This is basically a chance for colleges to fill places with students who are amazing, but narrowly missed their offer. This means you could still be accepted to cambridge, but to a different college than you applied or got your offer from.

Top UK law schools require higher A-Level grades from poorer students, research finds

Also half as likely to attend high-ranking unis

Students from poorer backgrounds need higher A-Level grades than their peers to attend top UK law schools, a study of England’s most selective universities has found.

The research, conducted by social equality consultancy The Bridge Group in collaboration with York Law School and magic circle firm Clifford Chance, found that university applicants from lower socio-economic backgrounds are significantly more likely to have been predicted at least ‘AAB’ in their A-Levels.

“This means that law schools require applicants from less advantaged backgrounds to have higher grades than their more advantaged peers,” the 16-page report concluded. “This is contrary to the intended commitment to access.”

The report went on to state that the data is not sufficiently detailed to confirm the reasons for the difference.

The research looks at UCAS data for 20 of the most selective law schools in England, as well as the admissions criteria and processes employed by a wider group of the top 30 UK law schools.

It further found that poorer students are half as likely to attend England’s top 20 law schools than their peers. They make up less than a quarter of successful applicants.

Applicants from less advantaged backgrounds were also less likely to receive an offer with qualifications other than A-Levels such as BTECs. Vocational qualifications alone were only accepted by two-thirds (65%) of top UK law schools.

Commenting on today’s finding, Dr Penelope Griffin, director of higher education and impact at The Bridge Group, said:

“It is surprising that applicants from lower socio-economic neighbourhoods need higher A-Level grades. We recommend that law schools investigate the impact of their admissions requirements and processes.”

Laura Yeates, head of graduate talent at Clifford Chance, added: “This research highlights how much more both the university sector and employers still need to do to level the playing field.”

The report says that law schools should consider contextual admissions and develop a more “evidence-based” approach to setting grade requirements. It advises linking in with employers of law graduates to promote greater consistency between universities and firms. It also recommends the creation of a ‘Law Admissions Network’ for tutors and professional admissions staff to support entry by students from less advantaged backgrounds.

The legal profession continues to be dominated by individuals from higher socio-economic backgrounds.

In March the Solicitors Regulation Authority released the findings of its biannual collection of diversity data. Privately-educated lawyers continue to dominate corporate law firms: three times as many lawyers (21%) attended fee-paying schools than the national UK average (7%).

#18 - Is Drama School for The Elite?

Is Drama School For The Elite? We all know drama school is an expensive process. I've been auditioning for half a year and it's a journey I've thoroughly enjoyed, however I want to put into perspective just how much my auditioning process has cost me and so here's an estimated breakdown of what I've spent over the past 6 months: To register with UCAS: £24 To register with CUKAS: £24 Audition Fees: Royal Conservatoire of Scotland - £45 Guildhall - £63 Drama Studio London - £47.50 Central School Of Speech and Drama - £55 (This was the only place I got an audition fee waiver therefore I didn't have to pay anything to audition but I'm sure LAMDA do this too) Mountview - £45 PPA - £35 LAMDA - £54 Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama - £47 Guildford School of Acting - £55 Acting Coach Scotland - no fee RADA - £46 (£86 for later applications) In total that's £437.50 I've spent purely on the audition fees. Now, in my opinion and many other people's opinions, that is a lot of money. Especially when some of these auditions literally consist of being in the building for a grand total of 10 minutes to perform your monologues then leave without any form of feedback. Travel: (Excluding any extra taxi fare needed to get to the venues) Luckily, I did manage to book early enough to get myself onto the regional auditions. This meant some of my auditions were held in Manchester and I didn't have to travel to London as much as I could have but I still went quite a bit... Train to London (at least 5 times for first round auditions) - £60 Train to Guilford (3 times including once for a recall) - around an extra £10 Train to Glasgow (twice including once for a recall ) - £51.60 Hotels: I wouldn't normally mind staying in a cheap £10 hostel if I was just travelling for leisure but I wasn't prepared to do this when auditioning so it cost me around £40-£70 a time. Fortunately I do know some people who live in/nearby London who let me stay at theirs on occasion. Now total that all together and we've got approximately £1,028.70 which is a LOT of money to spend when the chances of getting recalled are very slim, never mind being offered a place. So, why am I writing this post? Not only do think this is a good insight for other people who want to audition for drama school, I want to express my thoughts and feeling. I've got through the hardest part. I've done the work, I've paid the audition fees. I've proved I've got enough talent to get in. However, I'm concerned that now I've gained a place, I will be unable to go due to lack of available funding. The course I hope to join, doesn't qualify for a student loan as its a private institution. It does however offer a career development loan but only for years two and three. Leaving no funding option available for year one (excluding scholarships which could potentially reduce the fees), how is a working class individual, with unemployed parents due to health issues and who already currently holds a full time job, expected to pay just over £10,000 for the course alone, excluding living costs? The arts are constantly suffering with unjust government cuts resulting in less attention being given to subjects which are vital in helping both children and adults develop creatively and in many people's opinion is becoming for the elite only. This is exactly the reason why. Students are encouraged to go and study and there's nothing I want more than to study acting at drama school so I can better myself as a performer. However, I find it extremely unfair, after the amount on money I've spent on auditions, that there is a potentially heartbreaking chance, I'll be unable to start studying again after already taking a year out. I'm by no means pin pointing this at the school I hope to go to because I know there are options which include monthly payment and I'm going to try my very best to ensure I've done all I can to enable me to make this work. I refuse to not start studying again in September after all of my hard work. I will go to drama school.

I can’t actually remember any off the top of my head, sorry!  I’m not saying there aren’t any, but I follow a lot of medblrs so I’m always forgetting details or struggling to match people to their URL. I keep meaning to update my list, and screencapping new UK medblrs as I come across them, so if I do, I’ll post a link as a reply to this post. I’m really chuffed that you read the list :DI hope any UK meblrs from the US (or abroad) can make themselves known and chip in with some advice. In case we can’t find anyone, here’s a very rough summary:Med schools in the UK use the same UCAS system as the rest of UK students do, however international students are charged different international fees by universities.  You might need to pay a small fee to use this UCAS system; bear that in mind. The application form is mostly jsut personal details and entering in your qualifications; UCAS may be able to help you with how you can enter US ones. There’s also a personal statement that you’ll need to write, and you’ll also need an academic referee to write you a reference, too. It’s also worth noting that in the UK, the med school applications deadline is October the 15th, the year before you intend to start. However, most med schools in the UK now expect you to do entrance exams, which even as an international applicant you’ll probably need to do.  Some of which have to be done before you apply, so you’ll need to research the university you want in good time before that deadline (preferably before the summer of that year, because the UKCAT last sits are in September), so you’ll know if you need to prepare any exams, and have time to book them and prepare for them.If you’re really stuck, you can always look into the universities you are considering, and drop their admissions department an email. They are usually very happy to help with queries. Hope this helps :)

  Student loan repayment income ‘undervalued by £600m’

A clash between the Department for Education and the Treasury over how to value the government’s student loans portfolio may have led to more than £600m in income from future loan repayments being overlooked, the National Audit Office (NAO) has warned.

The watchdog also advised that the government should take ‘a comprehensive view’ and carefully consider the potential impact on the government’s finances of future loan sales.

Examining last year’s sale of a tranche of loans to 400,000 students, the NAO was highly critical of the Treasury’s calculations and their differences over likely repayment rates from the DfE’s forecasts.

Changes in the accounting treatment of student loans could cost the chancellor his £15 billion Brexit war chest and leave his fiscal rules in tatters. The Office for National Statistics and the European statistical authorities are reviewing the way that the government accounts for the student loan book, which is on track to hit £20 billion by 2023, amid concerns that the present convention is a ‘fiscal illusion’ that is creating ‘perverse incentives’.

A decision by Eurostat is expected shortly on whether a different treatment should be applied. According to the Office for Budget Responsibility, a preferred option would to increase the deficit by £15 billion, ‘roughly equal to the margin by which the chancellor was meeting his fiscal target in our most recent forecast’.

  UK government ‘will call out monoculture tendency on campus’

The Westminster government is ‘committed to calling out [a] tendency towards a “monoculture” on campus’ and claims that some people feel ‘unsafe or threatened if they speak out’ in universities. The government made the comments in its response to the Joint Committee on Human Rights’ report into freedom of speech in universities.

Sam Gyimah, the universities minister, has consistently seized on the issue of free speech in universities, a popular topic for newspapers such as the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph. The government had already announced plans to simplify existing guidance around free speech for universities and students’ unions after Mr Gyimah hosted a meeting with organisations including Universities UK, the National Union of Students and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission. That new guidance will be published in the autumn, the government says.

A quarter of UK universities are failing to produce an annual report on research integrity, a parliamentary inquiry has found.

The report by the Commons Science and Technology Committee identified a “lack of consistent transparency” in reporting data on the number of misconduct investigations, and inconsistency in the way the information is recorded.

These failings have made it difficult to calculate the scale of research misconduct in the UK, it concluded.

The report examined what is known about problems arising from errors, questionable practices, and fraud in research, and what action is needed to make sure that problems are handled appropriately.

Tens of thousands of graduates have made student loan repayments worth £50m despite having already paid off their entire debt.

  ‘Ditch predicted grades’ from university admissions

Universities in the UK should stop using predicted grades when people are applying for places, say lecturers and head teachers. A study from the University and College Union says no other developed country uses such a system of forecasts of results for university admissions. The lecturers say most predicted grades turn out to be incorrect.

Head teachers have backed calls for a change, saying the current approach is ‘no longer fit for purpose’.

The UCU also cites research from 2016 suggesting as few as 16% of predictions for three A-levels or equivalent had proved accurate.

Ucas, which operates the admissions system, says the most recent figures suggest predicted grades are usually higher than the actual results – with 73% of applicants performing less well than forecast by their teachers.

The report from lecturers calls for an ‘urgent overhaul’ of the application system, so that pupils would know their actual exam grades before making their final applications.

  Vice-chancellors must justify big pay packets to Office for Students watchdog

Universities will have to provide a breakdown of performance criteria set for vice-chancellors and how the terms have been met, under a crackdown on excessive pay.

The Office for Students (OFS) watchdog has sent a 17-page guide to universities on what data they must provide each year to flush out those who do little for their money. It said that ‘out of kilter’ salaries were unacceptable and it could fine those unable to justify paying more than the prime minister’s £150,000 salary.

Universities must provide full details of the total package, including basic salary, performance-related pay, pension contributions and taxable and non-taxable benefits. This will be published in an annual report. The ratio of the full package and the average of all university staff is also required. Labour called the measures ‘watered down’ and said that it would impose caps on the ratio between the highest and lowest-paid staff.

Sajid Javid has caused a diplomatic rift by excluding Indians from a new fast-track visa system for students. The home secretary announced that he was reducing the level of documentation needed for applicants for student visas from 26 countries, including Australia, the United States, China, Argentina, Cambodia and Thailand.

Indian students have been left off because of fears of ‘non-compliance’, meaning they are judged at risk of disappearing after entering on student visas, although the Home Office does not publish statistics to support this claim. India has repeatedly raised the issue of visas for students and professionals and the change has caused outrage in the Indian media.

Data belonging to thousands of students is to be shared with companies by the new universities regulator. Campaigners and MPs have criticised the move, saying students risk being ‘exploited’ for profit.

The legislation permits the Office for Students (OfS) to share data with entities such as Pearson, the education company, as well as the Student Loans Company, HMRC and the Competition and Markets Authority. The OfS holds data on declared mental and physical health conditions, academic progress, and graduate employment and earnings of all university students.

  Teenagers ‘let down over degree choices’

Teenagers in England are having to make choices about university on the basis of too little information, a report by the Public Accounts Committee warns. The PAC report says this is due ‘in large part to insufficient and inconsistent careers advice’. It also says students have limited redress if they are unhappy with the quality of courses and that shorter and part-time courses have not emerged. The report says it’s ‘deeply concerning’ that most students in England don’t have the advice they need to make an informed decision.

The Department for Education maintains that studying for a degree is an investment and can boost earnings. It is currently carrying out a review into post-18 education, which, the department says, will make sure students are getting value for money and genuine choice between technical, vocational and academic routes.

According to the report, students from deprived backgrounds were still much less likely to enter higher education than those from wealthier families.

  Minister renews call for universities to be ‘in loco parentis’

Higher education institutions must be able to inform parents if students are struggling with life-threatening mental health issues, the UK’s universities minister has said.

Speaking at the University of Buckingham’s Festival of Higher Education, Sam Gyimah reiterated his call for providers to see themselves as being in loco parentis for vulnerable young students who were living away from home for the first time.

Mr Gyimah faced a backlash when he first used the term in loco parentis at the launch conference of the Office for Students earlier this year, with critics accusing him of ‘infantilising students’. However, Mr Gyimah said at Buckingham that he was specifically referring to mental health problems that could be life-threatening.

The intervention came after the father of a University of Bristol student who took his own life called for data protection rules to be changed to allow universities to tell parents if students are struggling.

1.Undergraduate degree courses

Most undergraduate degrees in teaching are in primary education. "Trainees spend just under 50% of their time out on placements in schools. That varies across the years, with students doing less time in school in year one and more in the final year of their course," says Jim Clark, head of department for education and lifelong learning at Northumbria University.

Length: three or four years

Entry requirements: A minimum of two A-levels (or equivalent) is usually required, though this will vary. Students will also need grade C or above in GCSE English or maths (or B if applying in Wales). Those training to teach early years and primary will need grade C or above in GCSE science. Students will also need to pass a skills test in numeracy and literacy.

Funding: Students pay fees of up to £9,000. Student loans and maintenance grants are available to home students, loans to EU students.

2. Scitt

Scitt stands for "school-centred initial teacher training". How it works is that training is run by groups of schools in a partnership with a university.

The training is practical, hands-on and delivered by current teachers based at their school, or within the network of schools. Trainees will get qualified teachers status and, in some cases, a PGCE. Applications are made directly to the network of schools, rather than the university.

Length: one year

Entry requirement: Same as School Direct

Funding: Students pay fees of up to £9,000. Student loans and maintenance grants are available to home students, loans to EU students. Training bursaries and scholarships worth up to £20k are also available to top graduates, depending on subject.

3. Teach First

Teach First is an education charity that recruits high-achieving graduates to teach in schools where more than 50% of pupils are from low-income backgrounds. Trainees are given six weeks of intensive training before spending two years at a school. During their first year they work towards a PGCE qualification.

Length: two years

Entry requirements: A 2:1 degree or above (and above 300 Ucas points), A-levels in relevant subject areas, grade C in GCSE maths and English. Trainees will also need to show qualities such as resilience and organisational skills.

Funding: Trainees are paid as unqualified teachers in their first year, and as qualified teachers in their second year. Pay varies according to region and school.
