If you can lose money in. 401k or IRA, why is it better than a savings account? Especially during a recession?

Because of the ~*~power of compound interest~*~.

Right now my high-yield savings account with Ally Bank earns 2.2% APY (annual percentage yield… the amount of interest it accrues in a year). That interest will then be added to the total, and I’ll make interest on my interest. In other words, it compounds over time, making me richer.

My 401(k) and Roth IRA (investment accounts, essentially) earn much, MUCH higher interest. Like, over their lifetimes (about 10 years), they’ve each earned 9% APY on average (with the interest dipping as low as 4% sometimes and as high as 12% given how the stock market is doing at any given time). That interest compounds as well.

So even when my investments are doing poorly, they’re STILL earning more interest than my savings. And even if I LOSE some money on my investments over time because of recessions and dips in the market, I’m still going to come out ahead because of all the compound interest I’ve earned over the life of the investments. Meanwhile, the savings account is perfectly safe and won’t lose money… but for that safety I sacrifice the chance to make a LOT more money.

Allow me to turn to my favorite compound interest calculator!

Let’s say I save $5,000 in a savings account at 2% interest, and invest another $5,000 in a 401(k), Roth IRA, or other form of investment account at 8% interest (settling on an average of 8% for the sake of this explanation, even though stock market interest expectations naturally vary). Here’s how the accounts will look over time:

Savings after 1 year: $5,100

Investments after 1 year: $5,400.00

Savings after 5 years: $5,520.40

Investments after 5 years: $7,346.64

Savings after 10 years: $6,094.97

Investments after 10 years: $10,794.62

And in that scenario, we didn’t even deposit more of our own money. We more than doubled our money within 10 years of investing on the power of compound interest ALONE. By contrast the savings account only earned about a grand. Now imagine if you kept investing more of your own money IN ADDITION to the compound interest.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury… I DO NOT YET REST MY CASE! Because you asked about losing money in a recession. So let’s play with the same numbers, but assuming that after 10 years a recession hits and my investments lose 4% (incidentally, that happened in 2018).

Savings after 10 years: $6,094.97

Investments after 10 years: $10,362.84

Ok ok let’s say something REALLY FUCKING TRAGIC happens and I lose 12% of my investments at year 10. Here’s how that would look:

Savings after 10 years: $6,094.97

Investments after 10 years: $9,499.27

DO YA FEEL ME, SON? ARE YOU PICKING UP WHAT I’M PUTTING DOWN?

The investments still beat the savings. And you still come out WAY ahead of your initial investment.

And yes, I’m definitely simplifying things for the sake of education. There are tons of factors that can affect investment interest! The 2008 crash and subsequent recession was really fucking bad for a number of reasons outside of the stock investments of average people. But we’re unlikely to suffer a similar crash for many many years to come (fingers crossed).

All of which is to say: no risk, no reward. Wise money managers will keep a healthy amount in a high yield savings account for safety’s sake… but keep the majority of their money in investments. If you want more details on how all this works out, here’s what we’ve written:

Fastcat Ferries, the mobility we deserved

Mga Ka-isla, as a frequent traveler we always craved for comfort, fast and reliable service we deserved when traveling that is why I am a very avid passenger of Fastcat Ferries whenever I travel to and from Cebu to Bacolod (via Toledo and San Carlos).

So as a Bol-anon laagan it was with much delight when I learned that Fastcat is now serving trips from Jagna (Bohol) – Balbagon (Camiguin) – Opol (Cagayan de Oro).

There was an instance when I was invited by a friend to her wedding in Davao and as a Field coordinator by day I was doing my work in Ubay, Bohol that time. So I planned to travel going to Davao by Jagna – Cagayan de Oro without knowing that the ferry operator cancelled their trips to Cagayan de Oro months ago already. So to cut the long story short, I was not able to attend the wedding of my friend.

Instantly when Fastcat made its first voyage to the seas of Cagayan de Oro via Jagna, Bohol the first questioned that really caught my mind during the media launched was “Will Fastcat stay for good?”

What is Fastcat?

Fastcat is operated by Archipelago Philippine Ferries Corporation which also runs Bus transit like Jam Liner and Philtranco which aims to be the industry leader and standard setter in terms of ferry transportation business. Fastcat’s vessels are Catamaran type which means the ship consist of 2 hulls which can be sail or engine-powered. The catamaran type of vessel is best suited for our seas and weather condition which makes it stable and safe. They are a RO-RO (roll on, roll off) type of vessel which means they can bring in at least 34 cars and 7 trucks or buses making business and leisure trips more convenient.

The notable thing about fast cat is they have an elevator for PWDs (Persons with disability), their engine rooms are clean and the personnel are very much accommodating. The vessels are also new which has an operational span of 45 years, state of the art navigating systems and a snack bar that offers the best delicacies of the island. Aside from that, when I asked the personnel of the trip going to Cagayan de Oro they have a staff house in Camiguin which means when they stop at Balbagon Port they change their crew giving them time to rest after the next trip back to Jagna. A company that values their staff and crew in such a very humane way deserves an extra plus point for me in choosing a company to travel with.

What more to expect about the Trip?

Right now Fastcat is just operating one vessel plying from Jagna – Camiguin – Cagayan de Oro but is planning to add more schedules and vessel when demand increases. Aside from that trip, they also have daily trips from Tubigon – Cebu and will be adding another trip from Ubay – Leyte. Which means mobility within the island of Bohol to other parts of the country will be more convenient.

Currently they have more than 20 trips all over the country and trips going to Malaysia.
