i'm gonna be honest, i LOVE that will and hannibal do not kiss on the wrath of the lamb. it is right, it is perfect, poetic, i never questioned it, and that never made me believe less in their romance. the ending of hannibal did not need a kiss and that is fine. it is still my #1 favorite finale of all time.
THAT BEING SAID mads mikkelsen and hugh dancy are just beautiful kissers and i would have KILLED to see them kiss in character. it murders me whenever i see gifs of them kissing other people and to know that they will never kiss each other KNOWING THEIR CHARACTERS HAD THE BIGGEST SEXUAL TENSION THAT EVER EXISTED IN THE HISTORY OF TELEVISION AND THAT THEY WERE CANONICALLY IN LOVE AND WE STILL DIDN'T GET TO SEE THEM KISS. hearts were broken. people DIED.
My one qualm with this show will forever be that they didn’t use this as the post credit scene. It would’ve elevated the already perfect ending.
Will and Hannibal mirroring each other in everything down to the way they’re sitting, their facades finally stripped away. The way it cuts to Hannibal breaking the symmetry to stare contentedly at Will. Will, blanketed by sunlight, eyes closed, with a look of complete tranquility on his face, at peace with himself at last. They are finally one. The viewer doesn’t know if they’re in Hannibal’s mind palace or the actual chapel. It’s perfection.
I was thinking about episode 6 of season 3, Dolce, and I realized something. Why would Will try to kill Hannibal now, right in front of Uffizi Gallery, in front of a bunch of people in broad daylight? Why would he do it after saying and then confirming that he had forgiven Hannibal? And why would he do it with a knife? He said it himself, if we were to kill Hannibal he would do it with his bare hands.
If you look at a deleted script from their conversation , Will was supposed to tell Hannibal that he forgave him, but he still couldn’t forgive himself. Will had already left his dogs to Alana Bloom. He let go of what happened during Mizumono, he let go of his hallucinations of Abigail. All that was left was to let go of Hannibal. Once Will finally talked to Hannibal, saw him again and finally had closure, I think Will was ready to end his life. And he was going to do it in front of Hannibal. I also think this is why Will didn’t put up much resistance to Hannibal trying to eat him immediately after.
"Do you feel like you're alone, Will?
Do you have a soulmate?
Somebody who challenges you—
I'm talking about someone who opens up things for you;
touches your soul.
You can't give back to them, you know?
You'll never have that kind of relationship in a world where
you're always afraid to take the first step,
Because all you see is every negative thing
ten miles down the road.
But you can do anything you want.
You are bound by nothing."
