How I envision Epic the Musical is so different than how everyone else sees it.
LET ME EXPLAIN. I don't know how it happened, but I have always associated this musical with pirates. I think it's because I was super into Just Roll With It (The insanely powerful D&D podcast) when I started to listen to Epic non-stop. So when I was trying to put together a "movie" in my head, I used all of my JRWI ocs in place with the character in Epic and made the world loosely based off of Mana (The world where the character of JRWI: Riptide took place) but all the plot is the same.
Some of the changes:
-Odysseus and his crew are Navy soldiers and Ody met Eurylochus and Polities when they were just training to become soldiers.
-Ody is a Triton (fish person) and has a normal, boring sword because he uses "Shape water" (Self-explanatory but he can basically freeze water into whatever) most of the time since he's literally surrounded by it the entire musical.
-Eurylochus is a human but with like two sets of wings (he looks like an angel essentially) and his weapon is a bow & arrow.
-Polities is a Tabaxi which means that he is just an anthropomorphic cat and he uses a long staff (like a monk)
-Athena and Zeus are Elves or at least have the appearance of them, Poseidon is also a Triton (just a more powerful one than Ody, obviously), Hermes is just the same thing as Eurylochus but more celestial, Penelope is an Elf, and Circe is a changeling
I have a lot of other stuff I added/changed like small details and what not but I would be here yapping for hours if I got into that so maybe next post

Hi hi sorry it's been a few days but I'm back with a mostly complete analysis. a lot of these ideas aren't new and have been shared around by other fans or Mr. Jorge Rivera-Herrans himself. These are personal interpretation so. if you disagree that's too bad. also ithaca spoilers if you haven't gotten around to listening to it. also also this is transcribed from handwritten notes so. anything that doesn't make sense to you also doesn't make sense to me this is just words
Troy Saga
Horse and the Infant
“Think of your wives and children” oh yeah that’s all he does
Man i wish we had more content of the crew
Comfort zone and Cope with That I miss you dearly
“A vision of what is to come” ohoho becoming a monster
“Boy to an avenger, one fueled with rage as you’re consumed by age” sounds familiar [as odysseus goes along he gets consumed by rage]
Penelope and Telemachus will always impact his decisions, almost blinding him
“All you can chose is whos” make them decisions
And also he’s going to kill people he can’t avoid that at all. It’s up to him who’s worth killing, i guess
Just a Man
This song is probably one of the most important songs in the entire musical. Its lyrics are important and repeated throughout the musical, it tells the story of what will happen in a way, and it’s also just a really good song about Odysseus as a character early on and later down the road. but more on that later
He is a father before he is a soldier
Loses that a little bit later on. Because. Twenty years of being lost at sea changes a man.
“Haunt my days” always thinking about them
He’s so gentle and kind, closing the baby’s eyes as he holds a knife. But he’s also closing his own eyes rather than facing his decision
Just a man becomes a common theme throughout the musical and i think at some point (I think at Thunderbringer we hear “when does a man become a monster” for the last time) we lose that theme and it just becomes Monster
“Trade the world to see my son and wife” trading his men’s lives [he had spent the last twelve plus years with them, and they were his life for a while. You know?]
Comet become a meteor = becoming unstable and causing destruction. [this also happens the closer he gets to home, like how meteors are more dangerous closer towards earth]
Candle become a blaze = “when the fire begins to fade, for the fallen and the afraid” in Remember Them
Ripple become a tidal wave = Polyphemus to Poseidon pipeline.
Reason become the blame = multiple instances of this, “Look what you turned me into”, “I have to see her again” (he’s going to see his wife again and like. His decisions are based so strongly on her it feels less like an actual thought process and more priorities without thought), i remember something with Zeus but can’t remember it right now, Elpenor originally had a line in Underworld saying “but what do you care, so many deaths happen under your reign”. So on so forth you get the point
Man become a monster = you know. Losing his morals overall and his mercy. (now that ithaca saga is out we see how he uses the same tactics of the monsters he fought and actually becomes them in a way)
The layering of the chorus and “forgive me” is soo cool and means so much to me
Also odysseus doing this for the gods and then hating and opposing multiple later [like starting as a “ok i guess i’ll do this” and turning to a “FUCK YOU” follower if that makes sense]
“Wow, I'm so glad we’re done fighting! Where’s Odysseus we should celebrate! Why does he have a baby so close to the ledge”
The idea of celebrating winning the ten year war and turning to see your captain killing a baby makes me ill
Just a man following the gods orders
Full Speed Ahead
SIX HUNDRED MEN!! SIX HUNDRED MEN UNDER MY COMMAND!!
What lies in between is wild and crazy and will change you all
Eurylochus being backed by the men musically and literally is so AUGH
There are also instances that the men are gone (think Circe’s island and any time eurylochus and Odysseus are alone) or maybe less men
theme/pattern of 600 men
Eurylochus trusts Odysseus and does what he says easily and wholeheartedly
Polites! Augh they’re just such good friends i need to be shot and killed
Seeing the light in every situation [literally]
Polites only sees good and wants a peaceful approach, Odysseus is skeptical but also starts peaceful, Eurylochus jumps to violence
Which is probably why he takes Polites with him and not. Eurylochus
I love their dynamic as a trio
Open Arms
Again, polites is very optimistic and light about everything
Trust is so big for his character and so is patience and peace and when he dies Odysseus loses those attributes
Odysseus is using kind language but also lets the lotus eaters know they can and will fight
He’s trying to work with Polites and be kind but. He still has a crew to protect
We all know how well that works out i guess
Find that balance of blind trust and critical thinking
Polites trusted and asked the lotus eaters about different food, essentially and indirectly leading himself to his death
I’m such a huge fan of the art looking like the voice actors
Warrior of The Mind
Odysseus looking for a friend before a mentor, athena looking for a warrior before a friend
Both wanted the same/similar end result and they just have different ways of going about it
“I can see you” LIAR!! LIAR!! LIAR!! Odysseus you are a known liar from day one i hate you
I actually don’t hate him. I just think this is a really good and interesting way to show that he’s always been cunning (a liar) and becoming a warrior of the mind didn’t change that.
Look can I be honest with you guys I don't listen to the athena songs as much as I do the other ones I'm sorry I know they're good they're just never what I want to listen to on a random Tuesday you know?
I’m so insane about the Ithaca saga do you tumblr people want to hear my full analysis of each song to celebrate
