"Good morning Canary," Tango greets him brightly, in a voice that's liquid sunshine. "It's time to get the session started! We've got cows to feed and a chicken-barbeque-ificator to make."

He ducks out of the house he built, with materials he gathered while Jimmy was out begging for a bucket of water. He hasn't once brought this up. He hasn't once reminded Jimmy he isn't being very helpful, or told him he makes dumb decisions. He hasn't made Jimmy the butt of a joke, unless the joke is about both of them.

Jimmy stands and stretches. The house is full of the smell of food, which is funny because Tango says he can't cook. Just like how he says he can't build, except he built their house, and Impulse used to gush about the crazy things Tango would build when they were in the Southlands together. Jimmy wonders what people have told Tango about him. He knows the canary thing, obviously. Does he know they're doomed, because he's here?

It's not that Jimmy feels useless, or pathetic. It's just that, well, he's used to people bringing it up by now, isn't he? It's a fun game. Remind Jimmy he's a bit useless at times. Except Tango isn't playing along.

Jimmy grabs the finished chicken from the furnace and eats his breakfast while he walks. Tango is replanting some wheat in the garden and muttering to himself as he works. He can't go mining, he's too vulnerable. Except he went down into the mines yesterday when Jimmy was taking damage, to make sure he was okay.

There's a lot of things that Tango can't do.

He can't cook. He can't build. He can't mine. He can't fight.

There's a lot of things that Tango won't do, too.

He won't play along. He won't hold things against Jimmy. He won't remind him he's kind of useless sometimes.

Jimmy wonders what else Tango can't, won't, do.

Tango looks up from the wheat field and cuts off his muttering with a nervous laugh.

"Oh hey Canary! Welcome to the land of the living." He hands Jimmy a few pieces of wheat. "Thanks for getting those cows yesterday, by the way! That's gonna be a life saver later."

Jimmy smiles and laughs. It's weird, being congratulated like this. It's not that he isn't loved, or has never gotten praise. It's just that most people aren't so forward with it. Genuine. Jimmy can't take a compliment. He's never had to before. He's used to digging for them through veiled words and backhanded fondness.

"Well hey, don't worry about it big man," Jimmy stammers. "You know I've got us covered."

"Well at least one of us knows what he's doing, right?" Tango laughs, and once again Jimmy feels like he's being washed in liquid sunlight.

Tango can't do a lot of things. He can't build a house. He can't cook. He can't mine.

Tango won't do even more. He won't put Jimmy in his place. He won't play along. He won't acknowledge his own accomplishments.

Maybe they really were made for each other. Maybe, for once, the universe knew what it was doing when it tied their souls with string.

Jimmy wanders back to the pen to feed the cows. He wonders if the canary is ever fond of the coal mine, if the dark halls and cold stone bring it comfort before the end. He wonders if the mine is ever fond of the birdsong, if it ever regrets it's choking embrace.

There's a lot of things Tango can't do. Jimmy wonders what they can't do together.

me realizing that the songs in my head for my made up animatics that unless i make it clear that the original meanings of the lyrics do not match one to one to the animatic that the vibes+message of my lore will come across way way different...

uhh. pidge. pidge was not groomed sexually even if they are based on me pidge is about uh. having shitty people be your support system and like an insight into like. how do people cope i promise pidge was not . which is something because the two main songs i have for animatis of pidge could very very much make it seem like their mentor was a pedo he was not he was projecting heavily onto pidge and wanted them to "grow up right" and by "right" as in fit into a stereotype of a good team rocket member er it was not sexual grooming im putting this here cause for the love of god it was not like that

this is also kind of odd now that i think about it because i do think about mentor like grabbing pidge by the shoulder or leading around by the shoulder sometimes but like that's rarely and its more like . urgh

one of the songs i associate with pidge is kinda their attitude/persona and also them shifting the blame off of either mentor's shitty actions to anything else (like their mentor's drinking problem)

and the other one is kinda reflective of pidge's like. their dependeceish i have no idea how to describe it but like i do think its a good general song between pidge and their mentor because i think in a weird way it kinda helps show like pidge's dependence/trust(kinda) in their mentor in a really weird way because a few lines are really wow. wow. pidge did not trust him at the start, they're reluctant to go along but soon enough later on they'll get used to it they're going to have to, because who the fuck else is gonna have their back so i guess its okay. that facade is still a face deep down pidge is still scared but maybe if we keep going that facade will be real. yeah pidge fucking loses it sometimes their kanto years after getting more used to things are the worst in terms of their actions because they really don't give a shit and become more fixated on pleasing their mentor by living up to his expectations

im not going to lie im not even sure if i was groomed but i know what happened was sexual, i hated it, but also there was this slow burn of me compromising my morals because i somehow for desensitized to it and it consistently kept getting worse and i was 14 and the other person was 16 so uh. i think im gonna take this and say i probably did get groomed im not pulling this out of my fucking ass

Been a relatively slow start to the year, in terms of personal endeavours, but the world just doesn't stop. But this down time of mine has meant I have been able to binge a couple of series before work ramps up again. This week I'm talking about two series, one that's still fresh off the press and another that's almost as old as I am, but both are dripping with absolute style!

Arcane

Let me preface with something very important. I have never played League of Legends. I have never wanted to play League of Legends, and after watching Arcane.... I still have no desire to. But that has nothing to do with how much I enjoyed this series. So just as a warning, going forward in my recommendation, I might get some LoL details wrong here.

For the uninitiated, Arcane takes place in the world of League of Legends and details the backstory of fan favourite character Jinx, as well as a few other iconic characters of the game. I'm not overly familiar with the LoL aesthetic in general, but Arcane takes place in the Magical Steampunk city of Piltover and its dilapidated undercity slums.

The show is a beautiful blend of stylistic 3D animation and 2D special effects to portray a world of unique aesthetic and design. The series is unabashedly colourful, utilising neon highlights of pinks, blues, and yellows wherever possible to make the cityscape, the streets, the action, or even the inner dialogue of a character pop more.

The voice actors did a really good job giving life and personalities to the characters, and though I've never played League of Legends, I feel like I got to know the vibes of many of the main characters better than if I did play the game. The soundtrack is also pretty fun, a sort of punk-rock, edgy style that comes right in your face via the opening, a song called "Enemy" by Imagine Dragons.

I came away from Arcane hoping to see more of this world, ideally in animated form again. Because the take away my friend who's played League wanted to impress upon me is that the world and characters are great, but don't play the game. It is apparently a toxic hobby that is hard to break from, and even harder to enjoy. So that's the take away I'll give my readers.

Watch Arcane. Don't play League of Legends.

Cowboy Bebop

I've had a renewed appreciation for older anime series recently, and I'll probably have another one to recommend next week. Cowboy Bebop is a very stylish series with a very unique vibe. Many people, myself included, recommend Cowboy Bebop as a good gateway anime. So why don't I get into why that is?

The main cast of characters are varied in personality and drives, but their arcs are fairly easy to follow since the cast is so small. We follow a group of bounty hunters, in this age called "Cowboys", upon their spaceship called "The Bebop", as they race across the solar system in search of criminals and adventure. The backstories and arcs of Spike, Jett, Faye, and Ed are developed in chunks over the course of the series, with each character getting starring roles in episodes of their own. Some overwhelming anime series can have more than a dozen recurring characters, but for those new to anime, four main characters, and maybe four or five more recurring side characters is easier to keep up with.

Arcs and stories are very self contained. Two-parter episodes are very rare throughout the series, and three-parters are non-existent. It's easy to hop in and out wherever, since the conflict of an episode is usually resolved by the episode's end, and won't come up again in later episodes. It's a short series too, with 26 episodes. So even without bingeing, it won't take weeks to finish.

Something that the Netflix live action series apparebtly struggled with was the visual and sound design. The character designs are not overly stylised, but every main character is easily identified by sillhouette alone. Characters actually appear quite familiar to one who's experienced a lot of western animation. The voice actors, both English and Japanese did an amazing job at bringing the characters to life and I cannot honestly imagine better picks for these roles.

The setting, themes, and soundtrack are the most distinguishing identifiers of Cowboy Bebop. The series takes place across many planets and moons across our solar system, and has this rugged, almost rugged noir style. The locales are futuristic, but not in a Wall-E sort of way, more like halfway between Star Wars and Mad Max. The cowboy theme is present throughout the show, but the soundtrack has more in common with 50s jazz and blues. The soundtrack is probably my favourite take away from the show, with tracks such as "Tank" and "Cats on Mars" still in regular rotation on my Spotify.

Cowboy Bebop is a unique experience dripping with style. If you're new to Japanese Animation and don't want to get overwhelmed, it'd be harder to start in a better place. If you're already deep into anime and haven't seen Cowboy Bebop, you're missing out on one of the essential watches of the genre. Watch Cowboy Bebop!
