Bofuri Season 2 Episode 1: Land of The Never Rising Sun

So I'll be honest from the get-go, Bofuri isn't exactly a stellar series. It's fun, it's cute, and it's silly. There's not really a great deal outside of that admittedly, but I do still enjoy it quite a bit as a sort of guilty pleasure.

But I mean, just look at that image above, this first episode was really pretty thanks to its setting. Overall, I was pretty surprised by the pretty scenery and some of the storyboard work. Not that Season 1 was a slouch or anything, but it never really stood out as much as this first episode has.

Truthfully, without going back to Season 1, this first episode of S2 feels like a very healthy upgrade to the series. Perhaps because it's caught its stride in terms of material, or Silver Link is familiar with the content, or something else entirely, but it overall feels a lot better. Even something as simple as a slideshow-esque montage feels fun because they understood the purpose. Some really cute, warm, and happy music plays atop all of the guild members getting out into the new floor (the 4th level of the game), and it completely sells that happiness in exploring something new and unknown.

Of course, Silver Link isn't exactly known as a top of the line studio by any means, so you'll see somewhat "cheaty" animation and various tricks to lighten the load. Admittedly it's not the worst thing, especially given that they're saving up for the big moments of the episode, which I think were well worth it. Certainly not mind blowing, but more than enough to catch your eye.

Of course, it's still got that mildly jaw dropping absurdity, where a six limbed drooling monster of death is having an awkward conversation with a friend-slash-rival before going on an unstoppable tirade of terror.

And of course, we finish off on a cute little moment with Maple to cleanse the palette.

This first episode was a really nice reintroduction to the series as it took a little bit from everywhere and showed off the improvement Silver Link seems to be promising for this second season. Certainly lots to be looking forward to so long as viewers can keep their expectations tempered. Personally, I'm just excited to see how Maple goes about breaking the game this season, so I'm really looking forward to the next episode!

i think its really smart writing how how mii and payne are consistently loved by the new world online devs despite being just as overpowered as maple. because the thing is, to the majority of gamers, maple would be playing the game the "wrong" way if it were real. she goes afk in the middle of a forest, she doesnt want to kill the cute monsters, she puts all her skill points into defense-- meanwhile mii and payne are significantly more conventional players. a mage and a swordsman who rely on their respective attack powers to tear through enemies and other players. that's way more common and way more expected. the devs clearly didnt plan for how balance the game when taking a play style like maple's into account because it just isnt seen as the "normal" or "correct" way to play.
