#I got at least 1 department’s student of the year award each year and sometimes 2

Times I almost killed someone in public include the time my stupid shitty high school gym teacher (NOT Mr. V he was an angel, this was Mr. H) went up to the podium to present PE student of the year for my grade after most other departments had already presented their awards and girls* had won I think every single one so far, and he commented negatively on the fact that girls had won every award so far and said something like “this one’s for the boys”
All of those cis boys were such stupid stinky underachievers (well except for Jack ily Jack) and if they wanted student of the year they should have tried a little harder!!! Everyone who got student of the year awards that year fucking deserved them, fucking earned them, and I’m not just saying that because I won two of them that year but that DID contribute to the overall level of rage I felt in that moment, yes
*including people who at the time were presenting as/identifying as such but later came out as Not Girls, shout out to Shan and me

Chapter three! I already skimmed through it and just. Holy fuck I’m falling in love with this series all over again, and this is just the opening arc, how the hell is this so good??? I’m genuinely just in awe and fuck is it making it hard to decide where to have a cut-off point for this chapter. I suppose we’ll just have to see what fate decides.
(Also, the temptation to just paste in all of the last three pages of the chapter is so incredibly strong, you don’t understand.)
[No. 3 - Entrance Exam]
We start off with some exposition: UA’s hero course is designed to give students all they need to go pro, and is the toughest and most popular hero course in the country, with only a 1 in 300 acceptance rate. Discounting the four slots that are recommendation students, that’s 36 slots a year, which is about…
Tumblr media
Yeah. That’s a lotta applications, and that’s just for the hero course!
Several alumni are mentioned: All Might, who declined the people’s choice award; Endeavor, who’s stopped more crimes than anyone else in recorded history; and Best Jeanist, who’s won the Best Jeanist award eight years running. (One of these things is not like the other~ One of these things just doesn’t belong~) The exposition suggests that graduating from UA is basically a requirement for becoming a great hero - something which we’ll learn soon enough isn’t quite true.
But yeah, Endeavor with the record for crime handling, even above All Might. Quite the impressive hero, though that face…
Tumblr media
Not precisely reassuring.
So yeah, Izuku here mentions the date of the exam - February 26th. I figure that this has to be a Sunday, for the simple fact that Japan has a slightly different school schedule than us. Most notably: Japanese schools (some of them, anyways) have 5.5 day school weeks. Yes, that means the first half of Saturday can still be a school day.
While I couldn’t confirm for sure whether this is more common among the higher end schools, I feel like a school like UA, with its ‘Plus Ultra’ motto, would definitely be a school to have a half-day (or even a full day) on Saturdays, and since they also have to accomodate for middle schools that have Saturday morning classes, I figure that it would make the most sense for UA to schedule this exam on a Sunday.
The benefits of this, as we’ve already seen, is that we can then narrow down the timeline for the rest of the series, just based on that single, confirmed date. We know from the last chapter that the Sludge Villain had to happen on a Thursday or Friday of the first week of school (April 14th/15th), with the first training session two days later (the 16th/17th). But what this also gives us is when Izuku’s first year of UA starts, AND the possible years it could start on.
Since we see the glowing baby is in a modern hospital, we can assume that’s correlated to about our times. Give it a few generations, and we can guess that we’re in the 2200s or 2300s for the current era. Based on that assumption, we get the following years that have February 26th on a Sunday:
23rd century potential years: 2204, 2209, 2215, 2226, 2232, 2237, 2243, 2254, 2260, 2265, 2271, 2282, 2288, 2293, 2299
24th century potential years: 2310, 2316, 2321, 2327, 2338, 2344, 2349, 2355, 2366, 2372, 2377, 2383, 2394, 2400
As a side note, when I got into the series, my brain weirdly latched onto the idea that this had to all be happening in the year 2317. I don’t know why I decided on that number, but that’s what I rolled with, and hilariously I could be RIGHT about the year the current manga arc is happening in, provided Izuku’s first year is in 2316. Sometimes you just know, ya know? I know at least one other friend made these calcs independently of me and chose to run with 2237, which is totally valid! Probably makes more sense to be in the 2200s, but there’s room depending on how much time one thinks has passed.
As for when Izuku’s high school school year starts, we know that Japanese schools start on the second Monday of April. Since we don’t know if this is a leap year or not, we’ll end up with two dates, but that’s fine!
Feb 26 (Sun) -> Feb 27 (Mon) -> March (6/5, 13/12, 20/19, 27/26) -> April (3/2, 10/9)
Therefore, Izuku’s first day of classes (not counting the orientation, which I’ve seen a few other timelines assume is on the Sunday before classes start) is April 10th (or the 9th if a leap year)! I know this is all in the future from this chapter, but still, I wanted to share this at some point and figured now was as good a time as always.
Math!
Tumblr media
Sorry, I’ve just wanted to share this math I did for a while now, I put a lot of work into it and I am very proud of it. Let’s get back to the chapter.
So Izuku lives a 40 minute train ride away from UA, and has made it just in time for the exam. Apparently, this is only the practical portion? Or well, that’s the part that gets focused on in this chapter, with no mention of the paper exam. I would imagine they’d be the same day, though? But I suppose one can do whatever they like with it.
He’s standing there looking at the school, thinking about how he didn’t have a chance to test the power, while the other students head in-
Tumblr media
Excuse me, Toga?? I know that hairstyle is just a bit off, but… ???
...right, anyways. Izuku is wondering whether the hair really did anything (also, it was apparently sour, which, ew.) Katsuki comes up behind him and tells him to move aside.
Tumblr media
Truly a flattering image. Izuku panics a bit and greets him, but Katsuki just walks by without another word or gesture, leaving Izuku confused as he watches him head on into the building. The narrative notes that since the villain incident, Katsuki hadn’t bothered Izuku, while the unnamed characters in the background apparently recognize Katsuki from the ‘sludge’ incident (well, not shocked how the fandom held onto that name).
Izuku notes that he’s gotta stop flinching instinctively, and then tries to hype himself up, noting that it’s not like before, and think about the past ten months while taking a wobbly step forward- and then tripping over himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m sorry Izuku just has so many fantastic faces in this chapter I am crying trying to limit myself to just a few. But yeah, that little derp as he realizes what’s happening is adorable, especially while Ochako gently sets him back on his feet. She mentions that it’s her quirk, and apologizes for using it, but that it’s a bad omen to trip and fall. (I wonder if that gets played with again during later parts of the series… will have to check to see.)
While Izuku freaks out over talking to a girl, Ochako notes that the exam is nerve-wracking, and then heads off while wishing both of them luck as Izuku stares after.
Tumblr media
This fucking kid. I love him so much. His flustered excitement gets him some weird looks from the others still outside.
We transition to a new character (Present Mic) who immediately shows off his performative side by calling for a ‘hey!’ which… is met with silence from the crowd. He doesn’t let this throw him off, instead letting them know that he’ll present the guidelines for the practical, followed with a ‘YEAH!’ that gets met with an even heavier silence.
Izuku and Katsuki are seated next to each other, with Izuku descending right into excited muttering over Present Mic and how he listens to his radio show every week. Also with the assumption that all the UA teachers are pro heroes, which I mean, true, but still. Katsuki tells Izuku to shut up.
Present Mic explains the test: ten minute long ‘mock cityscape maneuvers’, with the applicants split among seven arenas, labelled ‘A’ through ‘G’. With more than 10k applicants total, that’s about…
Tumblr media
Yeah, more than 1500 per arena. Fucking hell, no wonder the robots deplete so quickly in only a few minutes. Also of interest:
Tumblr media
“Bring along whatever you want.” So technically, if Izuku were able to procure the tech and training to handle the robots, there would be nothing keeping him from getting into UA quirkless… though I imagine any kid who gets in mostly on tech probably gets side-eyed… though if said kid made their OWN tech, they might also get an offer from the Support department.
(AU where Mei accidentally took the heroics exam and got a shitload of points, but she ended up taking the offer for Support instead despite setting the record for most points in said exam. Katsuki forever wants to fight her. Izuku and her are good friends.)
Also, another thing I love is how Katsuki just told Izuku to shut up a moment ago, and then:
Tumblr media
He’s the one to initiate conversation on the details of the test, basically agreeing on the reasoning behind dividing up the students between arenas. Katsuki is annoyed at not being able to crush Izuku, which has Izuku awkwardly silent.
Also mini-Mic.
Tumblr media
Poor, poor Mic. He just wants audience participation. Anyways, he continues on to explain the points system, with the help of cute little Mario-themed silhouettes. There are three kinds of faux villains, with different points awarded for defeating each based on their difficulty levels. Also, attacking other examinees is prohibited!
A student (cough Tenya) raises their hand to ask a question, going on to note that the handout sheet appears to have four varieties of villain, and that such a blatant error (if it is one) reflects poorly on Japan’s top academy. He then spins around and points at Izuku, calling him out for his muttering and how distracting he’s been, and that ‘if this is some sort of game to you, then please leave immediately!’
Tumblr media
Is that… Mineta seated behind Izuku? I can’t find another panel that disproves that theory, so. Whelp. If you ever for some reason want to have Izuku accidentally deal with the grape early, he’s right there.
Anyways, Present Mic brings the convo back to the initial question/comment, noting that the fourth villain is worth zero points, and is more of an obstacle. He then brings up Super Mario Brothers, the old retro game, and compares the Zero Pointer to a thwomp. There’s one per site, serving as a gimmick that’ll rampage in close quarters. Tenya thanks Mic and apologizes for the interruption.
And so we get our final words from Present Mic:
Tumblr media
??? either he's referencing the original guy (which I think would be a misquote because I doubt OG Nap ever noted anything like that) or some French hero or the like who took on the name.
Discord offered this to me while putting together the post:
Tumblr media
So there you have it. Tentatively confirmed.
Tumblr media
Those EYES man, dude’s got the Rinnegan going on.
Honestly, I have to end on this panel just because of that last line from Present Mic. Like, look me in the eyes and tell me this isn’t the exact point to end on.
The discord’s takeaway from this:

The Treasury Department regulations you must comply with today are less onerous than in times past, but these days, you still can't go to Cuba for the fun of it. At least, not legally. While it was more scientific writers who persuaded the first winter visitors to begin sailing for Tenerife, especially to the Orotava Valley in the late 1800s, there is no doubt that adventurous travellers like Major Leveson considerably helped fascinate those early Victorian tourists. Going from D-Deck to A- three times a day for meals alone will mean 126 steps to be negotiated in each direction. Frequent traveling is something that is an essential element of any business or profession these days, while at times it's to build good client relationships, at times it is to establish business abroad.
Whether you have an end-of-summer trip planned or just a few days before the school year starts, consider checking out a new museum exhibit or two. Days, I did day tours at a few places, but that's not necessary, for example in cappadocia you can get your own vehicle and drive around. This is the fourth consecutive year I've been here, so I've seen and experienced a lot on the island, but this trip, by far was the most exciting. Furthermore, at times reputed travel agencies could help you to reduce travel expenses as they have copious resources and are familiar with the way to acquire the best of all deals. Traveling to a totally new country is something that doesn't happen too often Rapsody nowadays, so it's always exciting. We may use conversion tracking pixels from advertising networks such as Google AdWords, Bing Ads, and Facebook in order to identify when an advertisement has successfully resulted in the desired action, such as signing up for the HubPages Service or publishing an article on the HubPages Service. While travel is a fantastic way to gain insight into unfamiliar cultures and illuminating ways of life, it is not a cure for discontentment of the mind. Basic packing principles: Since the trip around the world takes about 126 days and the weather can vary considerably depending on the time of year I packed considerably more than I would for an airline trip.
Aventura Points will be cancelled if they remain unredeemed for 60 days after you voluntarily close your Aventura credit card account or within 12 months of the primary cardholder's death. These are the times when such places experience weather conditions that are unfavourable for some of the tourists. Travelers also had to be able to participate in five to seven hours of physical activity each day. Looking back, it has been a good trip, a varied itinerary with lots of different experiences. Successful articles are most often written by people who are truly passionate and uniquely knowledgeable about the subjects they address. The next 4 days in Istanbul rapsodytravel.rs were filled with excitement and new experiences and sights, there was tremendous diversity among all sights. Day trip to Ninh Binh, visiting various points of interest in the area such as Hoa Lu and Tam Coc. Here is a NY Times article with some observations from teachers who volunteered in Georgia. The tourist product covers the complete experience of a visit to a particular place. Motorbikes and even electric bikes are not allowed in the main town which gives you an idea of the efforts the government is going to to ensure that Zhuhai retains its reputation as a great location and a worthy place for Chinese nationals to visit during their holidays.
Some other travel guides recommend enough clothes for about ten days and that should be adequate. Now this is the first time that I've really got to grips with this little Turkish spindle and I think I may take it on holiday later in the year as I found that I can spin on it whilst travelling in the van. You can see on the map how big it the territory of this residence and it's really difficult to visit all it if you do not dedicate all the day for it. But we had only two or three hours this time and could visit only the central palace where were all the expositions. We may use remarketing pixels from advertising networks such as Google AdWords, Bing Ads, and Facebook in order to https://www.rapsodytravel.rs/ advertise the HubPages Service to people that have visited our sites. I've met some really cool people travelling who definitely have good sounds aren't just vagrant hippies and when you get to know them over some drinks and a couple of days hanging out, you can feel some kind of angst or escapism behind their reasons for travelling. Mealtimes are a social experience with communal dishes presented on a rotating disk in the middle of the table (we know this as a 'lazy Susan' back in the UK), giving you the opportunity to try a bit of anything. Hop On Hop Off passes offer one-way travel, giving you time to explore lesser known towns along the way and places off the beaten track.
I live in Italy, but I hardly can leave home for more than 1-2 days because of animals (I have a Maine Coon Cattery and other sentient beings) so you can imagine what have I do to visit the places of my interest. A lot has happened since HubPages' first days in Berkeley. Visit the remnants of the notorious Berlin Wall for a sobering Throwback Thursday then equalise with a dose of the city's contagious night vibes. We did not have the weeks or months it would take to build the relationships that we desired, we had a total of ten hours spread out over four days. Not all of the articles in your account will be edited at the same time, but you may have more than one article Turisticka agencija Rapsody selected over time. These past few days have been packed with new friends, new cultures, and new experiences. We spent 12 days touring Ireland including Northern Ireland and Belfast.
If there's only one single destination offered in your holiday package, you'll get to explore the popular attractions in that particular country or city. One of the difficult things about the routines embedded in our daily experience is that they tend to congeal into one giant, uniform blob that we label as life.” And this blob can harden over time to create an impenetrable barrier that prevents us from absorbing helpful advice and realizations that come to light. Offer applies to newly approved card accounts only; transfers from an existing CIBC credit card to a CIBC Aventura Visa Card are excluded. Nowadays, anyone could find good deals on flights and hotels using search engines and professional booking websites. Turisticka agencija Rapsody Your account must be in good standing at the time of booking to take advantage of the travel credit. If all craft beer movement started from the effort of few people to rise up against Big Beer, it's about time to start movement for beer for all”. Travel is available to companies, organizations and individuals who provide or plan to provide products, services or content in the travel and tourism industry. If you are looking forward to planning an outdoor adventure travel vacation with family or friends, you must read on. Visit the wilds, climb mountains, go rafting, snorkeling, parachuting, tour to places less visited, meet nature in its purest form - freaky, strange, beautiful and enticing - all at the same time.
With the advent of these travel companies, the holidays to different destinations of the world have also become much cheaper. Create high quality content that get Featured: Only articles that are Featured after going through the Quality Assessment Process are eligible to show up on Related articles. I have contacted OAT four times to try to cancel this trip, without success. The $100 travel credit can be used in a single transaction towards flight, hotel, car rental and vacation package bookings made using your Aventura card. This bonus Aventura Points offer is only available on the first $80,000 in net annual card purchases on your account (meaning all card purchases by all cardholders, at any Rapsody Beograd type of merchant); after that, net card purchases at grocery, drugstore and gas merchants will earn Aventura Points at the regular rate. I organize my time so that I visit Venice and other tourist attractions of Italy in One Day Tours of my invention. The food, the warmth of the people, the great music making, Iceland's stimulating cultural life and the constant feeling that we were in a beautiful new and unspoiled world made it an unforgettable experience all together. After four days in Nha Trang beach resort, with little else to do than recover from our intense travel experience, we spent almost a day in Saigon, and then two days in Bangkok, equally recovering from our Nha Trang experience.

10 Reasons to read Marlie B’s ‘Novelty’
Okay, so I’m sure you’ve all already seen me posting about my good, cute, adorable, passionate, smart, sassy friend Marlie ( @hey-marlie ) and her novel - ‘Novelty.’ But I figured I’d just clue you in to some of the things you’re missing and why it’s such an important piece of literature that you should definitely at least sneak a peek at. Marlie is a really talented writer, whether she believes it or not, and I’d love to share this story with the entire world.
So, that being said, let me just Buzzfeed this bitch and tell you the Top 10 Reasons why YOU should be reading ‘Novelty’ :
1. Fallon Ford - The main character is an aspiring writer working on her senior capstone project. She’s spunky, short, affectionately called a ‘Tiny Demon’ by her ex-best friend (and total hottie). Fallon Ford is a strong and confident woman, and she may be a hot mess in her brain about her writing, but she’s got some serious power moves out there with the way she handles her work life, academic course load, friendships, and free time. Her fashion is kind of basically the cutest mix of vintage boss-ass bitch, and she’s a literal fucking ray of sunshine. We need more more strong female protagonists in our lives, and Fallon’s main goal in this novel isn’t to find a man and be happy - I mean, sure, she’s Out There and Getting It with some total hotties that I will mention later, but her main goal and aspiration is to become the best writer she can be and do her best. And that, my friends, I think is super awesome.
2. Diversity - The cast of ‘Novelty’ is super diverse and it’s not the kind of diverse that is trying to make a statement, but the kind of subtle diversity that is a part of all our lives and should be talked about more. When asked about her diverse cast of lovely characters, Marlie responded by saying: “initially i don’t really think i noticed that my ‘cast’ per say was quite diverse. my college campus is 50% international students - on a campus of less than 1,000 students - and so having extremely diverse classes, or diverse ‘friend groups’ and all that is super normal. we have a really active lgbtq community, and so that’s a huge norm in my life and so i really wasn’t questioning it until i was pinteresting and realizing that i’ve got a really good group of kiddos that i’m molding to perfection and helping them be the best versions of themselves. so i think it’s obviously important to have representation, and i think it should be second nature that we don’t have to think ‘oh i have to have a character to fill out ____ quota’ because then what’s the real reason you’re doing it, ya feel ? so yeah … definitely a diverse squad, but that’s how it should be. and i’m really happy with the characters i have so far and i’m looking forward to what’s to come ! thanks for the shout out ! it means a lot and it’s good to reflect on these things.” Her characters represent multiple members of the LGBTQ+ community, multiple POC - African American, mixed-race, Vietnamese, Bangladeshi, and Puerto Rican. Marlie also tackles body image and represents all her characters in all shapes and sizes.
3. Friendship - The friendships in ‘Novelty’ are the kind of healthy relationships with a bit of banter and tough-love that I think we can all learn lessons from. The relationship between best friends and roomies Fallon Ford and February Vale is one for the books. They are supportive of one another, basically co-habitating grannies, who help each other dress, motivate the other in their fields of study, and also find the time to hold each other accountable for their actions and emotions. There’s no judgment, no secrets, and while their friendship is a central part of the novel, it’s not something that Marlie overdoes or feels the need to include in every chapter. It’s authentic and organic, and it’s a great lesson in how a friend can be supportive in multiple situations. Honestly, they’re just super cute, and it’s nice to see how they interact with one another both in private, in public, and respect the other with utmost love and adoration.
4. The Enemy - The main plot and conflict of the novel comes in the form of a tall drink of water known as Dane Jacobs. He’s a year older than Fallon, a post-graduate teaching assistant at their university, and he and Fallon share quite the history. They’re the best friends to enemies trope wrapped up in an angst blanket that makes your heart throb whenever they’re alone together. But what sets Dane “The Enemy” Jacobs apart from other enemies to potential-lovers trope is that he’s not diminished to an abusive or degrading male who sees the female as inferior to himself. Yeah, the fall out he and Fallon had was not quite the separation many of us would ever want to feel in our lives. But Dane doesn’t put Fallon down in any way when he’s assigned to be her advisor for her project. If anything, their banter and quippy remarks to one another show the deep rooted friendship they once shared, and how their separation from one another since the breaking off of their friendship has impacted them in a more emotional way then they’d care to admit. He still supports her writing and is honest with her - sometimes a bit too honest - and only wants her to do best. He masks it by saying he wants her to do well so he can be graded fairly on his work ethic as a teaching assistant, but I think we can all agree he’s doing it because deep down, he still loves Fallon and wants to see her succeed. Plus, he has an adorable puppy named Watson who makes an appearance whenever we need him most.
5. Breaking Masculine Norms - Where the obvious pairing a lot of us are hoping for is the reunion of Fallon and Dane, there is one character that has waltzed into Fallon’s life in a big way - Lawyer Tom, the ultimate hottie. Marlie writes Tom in a very specific way - he’s not buff, or strong. He’s a freckly, unruly red-haired, tall and lanky man with bony shoulders and a nose that wrinkles when he laughs. He’s not your typical heartthrob, but he’s mouthwateringly perfect in every single way. He comes into Fallon’s life at a time where her love life is in a bit of disarray, and in the past couple chapters we’ve come to learn that Tom is the gentlemen-status all men should aspire to be. He lets Fallon stay overnight after a night out clubbing and doesn’t expect anything from her but her company over dumplings. He visits her at work when she tells him she’s nervous about getting back to her normal shift. He even finds time to make morning runs with Fallon fun by going out for breakfast quiches at a little cafe every morning. He’s quarting her platonically and it’s so goddamn adorable and quirky. Yeah, they kissed once and it was hot hot hot, but he hasn’t kissed her since and he’s letting her take the relationship at the pace she wants. She’s the one who has to ask him on dates, and he’s the one who’s always justifying her emotions and actions whenever she’s feeling down or insecure. He’s a great support system and is open about his emotions and the fact that his home life hasn’t been the absolute best in the past. He’s confident in his work, is constantly calm and at peace with his surroundings, and enters every situation with grace and poise. Not to mention he has the most amazing relationship with his younger brother Cody, and honestly, is my new ultimate hero. He’s the role model all men should be aspiring to be, and the fact that he’s being so patient and kind and wonderful with Fallon is a huge turn on.
6. Success in Art - The legendary roommate February Vale is a goddess not only casually in life, but also in the art department. I know this is only a little tiny thing, but February is also in her senior year of university and she’s already had great success in her art career. It’s not often we see characters studying art portrayed as successful, or as having a grip on their education. The concept of the “struggling artist” is romanticized and oftentimes degraded to nothing more than just a hobby. But February expresses everything that’s wonderful about art - immersing yourself in your project, applying to galleries and exhibits, and being raw with your art in a way you sometimes can’t express yourself in words. When February came out as bisexual to her parents, it wasn’t received well and she took those feelings to the canvas, winning her awards and slots in galleries all through London (the characters’ home base). Marlie also never explicitly mentions what kind of art February is most interested in or establishes as her signature, and so I think that is truly important for us as readers to depict what we consider to be successful art and know that it can not only come from a student, but a woman, and a damn wonderful and courageous one at that.
7. The Banter - One of Marlie’s greatest triumphs in writing is her dialogue. She’s taught me so much about how to find multiple voices in your characters and to embody those personalities within their conversations. The banter between all the characters - primarily the snippy and sometimes crass comments rapidly fired back and forth between Fallon and Dane - is exceptional. The characters come to life through their words and expressions, and it’s a great way to not only connect to the characters yourself, but to really feel as if you’re standing there watching these characters interact. The office scenes between Dane and Fallon are truly amazing, and the flat scenes Fallon and February bring to life are hilarious. You can tell that these characters are can portray different versions of themselves depending on whether they’re in public or in private, and I believe that’s a great attribute to the great writer behind the words.
8. Pinterest - Per a request from an anon, Marlie has constructed an entire Pinterest account dedicated to storyboarding the personas of her characters. Every outfit mentioned, every studio described, and every action played out by each individual can be found within the boards of the Novelty Pinterest, and is a great outside resource to gaining a better understanding of who these characters are and how Marlie is envisioning them. They’re super fun to scroll through, and I oftentimes find myself going back to the characters mentioned in each chapter and attempting to find the outfits they were wearing, or the coffee shop they were sitting in. Seriously, it’s the absolute most unique thing I’ve ever seen a writer do and I’m fascinated by it.
9. Updates - Marlie is extremely good at making sure the updates are on time every single week. She updates every Saturday mid-morning and provides her own thoughts on the chapter as well as some insights to her writing mind. If Marlie has received any donations to her ko-fi page that week, she works hard to make sure the updates go up faster. She’s even posted on a Wednesday before. So really, you’re always getting new content and always learning more about the characters and the story, which is really truly wonderful.
10. Marlie - Obviously I’m going to talk about my girl. Marlie has been writing for ages, but has never really shared anything with anyone in public like this before. She’s taken what little concepts I had about these characters and this world and she’s run with it. I get the most random texts from her at 3am saying she has this great idea for how to develop a specific relationship, or introduce a certain character. She thinks everything through and edits the shit out of whatever she’s written so that it’s pristine by the time it’s published. She works so hard, and she lives with these characters in her mind 24/7. The thought and care that goes into her writing after each chapter and how she interacts with her readers is so important, because she will write paragraphs depicting specific, seemingly minute moments from the previous chapter, only for your mind to be blown as you learn something that you may have missed. She’s a lovely human and cares so deeply for her writing. She’s been helping me for years, YEARS, with my own writing and the fact that she’s out here creating this whole world and community of her own now is fascinating to me. There is nothing this girl can’t do, and I am constantly in awe of each chapter and the emotions I feel even if it’s what she considers a ‘filler’ chapter. She’s a keeper, that’s for sure.
-----
SO, those are the top ten reasons why you should be out there reading ‘Novelty’ and supporting our girl Marlie B. There are so many other reasons why the novel is as amazing as it is, but I think what it all comes down to is having a writer who cares about her readers, cares about her writing, and cares enough to want everything to just make sense. I’ll put all her links below so you can explore it all you want, but let’s support some new writers on here and make sure you’re reblogging what you like. Circulating what you’re reading is so important! And this girl deserves our love for sure.
Thanks for everyone who is already out here representing our girl and for all the questions and donations you’ve provided for her! She loves it! And she’s going to kill me for posting this! But I love her so freaking much! If anyone ever wants to freak out about each chapter with me, I’m always here to fangirl. No doubt about it. Thanks for your support, everyone! Have a great weekend.

What Juneteenth Means to Me
Tumblr media
By Danielle Samake
I, like a growing number of Black Americans, am a first-generation American. My mother immigrated to America from Jamaica with her family in 1990, and my father, alone, from Mali in the late 1990s. I am African-American culturally, by location, and at heart, but my family does not by lineage share the extensive history of racial subjugation in this country that many of my Black sisters and brothers do.
On my mother’s side, my family can trace our lineage back to my great-grandmother, a high-yellow woman of mixed African and (probably) Irish ancestry. My grandfather’s last name, and hence my mother’s family name, Mckoy, points to Irish enslavers somewhere in our family lineage. I never met my great-grandmother. Neither did my mother. Grandma Emeline, as I would’ve called her had I met her, lives on through me, my cousins, and our aunts and uncles.
My grandmother, Minella, who I called Grandma, but who went by many other names- Aunty, Sylvia, Mother Mckoy, Miss Minnie- had a contagious smile that lit up any room she walked into. I like to think I inherited that smile. Writing about my grandmother and the powerhouse of a woman she was requires another post. More accurately, a book.
When she died on May 1, 2019, College Decision Day, at age 81, I was heartbroken, but relieved to see that her suffering was over. One of the last things I said to her as I held her frail hand and softly brushed her forehead was, “Grandma, I got into Princeton. I’m going to Princeton in the fall. Nyah’s going to Kean. We made it Grandma. We made it.”
My cousin Anyah (Nyah) and I are not the first in our family to go to college, and for that we are extremely, inexpressibly thankful. From the ages of 4 to 7, I watched my mother put herself through Nursing School, with no concept of what that meant at the time except that I wasn’t getting as much “Mommy and Me Time” as I felt I deserved. As my mom studied, my cousins Anthony and Andre graduated from Kean University and Rider University, respectfully. Anyah is continuing the family legacy at Kean. A few years after I watched my mom walk the Graduation stage, immense pride swelling in my seven-year-old heart, my Aunt Venice also graduated from Nursing School, and my cousins Alecia and Antoinette graduated from Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University, HBCUs, respectively.
College was an expectation for Anyah and me, a standard for which we are extremely grateful. We have seen our family push themselves up out of poverty into homeownership, from segregated, underfunded-schools to graduation stages, from single motherhood to happy partnerships. We are so blessed to have so many examples of Black Excellence in our family tree. Our family and friends inspire us to do better, to strive for better, to reach higher, to go high when antagonists go low.
On my father's side of the family, I am profoundly fortunate to be able to trace my lineage directly back to Queens and Kings, to an Aunt commemorated in Le Musee National Du Mali (The National Museum of Mali), and to Mali Empire King and wealthiest man of the Middle Ages, Mansa Musa. My Aunts and Uncles are landowners, teachers, and government officials. I have not yet been to Mali, but I plan to go as soon as I can. That is so much more of an origin story than many of my Black sisters and brothers get. The deep brown skin I inhabit- the color of rich chocolate and tree trunks, is a daily reminder of where I come from, of who I am.
Even with my rich heritage, Princeton was not a given. My family had to overcome many significant obstacles unique to Black Americans that continue to limit our communities to this day. My mom and aunt, the first homeowners on US soil in our family, were redlined in 1993. Not 1960. 1993. My grandma, mother, and aunts cleaned white folks’ homes and took care of white children and the elderly for a living for years, and endured racial slurs and intimidation tactics from some members of these families. Two of my Aunts still work in Elder Care, and both work at the facility with the second-highest rate of COVID-19 infection in the state of New Jersey.
My sophomore year of high school, after my friends and I reported my racist Driver’s Education (Driver’s Ed) to my high school’s Guidance Department three times, she was not investigated or removed from her position, despite years of complaints. In 2019, she retired from her tenure with a glowing write-up in the local paper. Of the 25 students in my Driver’s Ed class, 20 were Black, and one was a Latino student . Another class that took place at the same time, with the same number of students, was majority white. Several of the students in that other class failed the Written Driving Exam, but passed the Driver’s Ed course with A+s. My class had the opposite result. The teacher made the course intentionally difficult, so that if answers to worksheets did not match the outdated version of the textbook she used verbatim, they were marked incorrect, even if they were the new Driver’s Manual’s rewording of the exact same response. The majority of students in my majority-black Driver’s Ed course passed the Written Exam, but failed the course. They had to retake the course the following year to graduate, yet could drive legally in the state of New Jersey. The B- I barely eked out is the lowest grade on my High School Transcript. I received a 92% on the fifty question Written Driving Exam.
At this point in time, I was focused on making my way through high school. This teacher’s sister-in-law was also my substitute English Teacher that year, and I was worried about the repercussions a struggle with her could have on my English grade. Two of my friends (another black girl and one of the four white students in the class) and I went to our Guidance Counselors on three separate occasions, and were told there was
“Nothing they could do about it”.
My Guidance Counselor, who is an incredible black man and supported me immensely throughout the college admissions process and every other aspect of high school life, told me at the time, “This might be good for you. It’s okay to earn a B sometimes,”.
What he didn’t understand was that it wasn’t the letter grade that upset me. It was the fact that the B- was in fact, UNEARNED. I and my fellow students worked hard in that class, and deserved grades much higher than those my white female teacher, who bragged to us about her two BMWs at least weekly, gave us.
I got my revenge however, by sharing all of my graded and corrected notes with a black friend who was taking Driver’s Ed with this teacher the following Quarter, and instructed her to “Share these notes with as many Black people as possible”. We move forward by sharing our stories and by advantaging each other when the system often fails us.
I tell this story not to minimize the much more difficult and impactful struggles of the other Black students in that class, of the other Black students who experience much more consequential acts of racism at my high school, in my community, and in the world, but to highlight that even the most high-achieving Black students- the ones who end up on Brochures, in Newspapers, in Photos with the Principal, receiving awards at Senior Recognition Night, and matriculating at Princeton University, experience systemic racism. None of us are immune to it, be our last names Brown, Mckoy, or Samake.
-
After accepting my offer of admission to Princeton, I decided to defer my admission for a year, and to accept a nine-month volunteer position with Princeton’s Novogratz Bridge Year Program (BYP) in India. Many Black people reading this will wonder what in my right mind would've made a seventeen-year old Black girl decide to live in India alone for so long, and you’re right to wonder so. I was an idealist, and the Princeton office responsible for the program did not make explicit information about racial challenges available to incoming BYP students. The office maintains that this was shortsightedness on their part, but this program has run for 11 years. They have seen many of the problems that can arise, but chose not to address them.
My family was split on whether I should participate in the program. One of my cousins went as far as texting me the night before my interview, telling me that I’d made a mistake, something I was angry with her about for months afterwards. Others supported my decision, but told me to stay vigilant. I did not tell my father until after I’d accepted my placement. He’d been supportive of my first choice location, Senegal, where we have family and friends who he knew would look out for me.
“In India,” he said, “people will think you are nothing. They will treat you like nothing. They will treat you like the garbage in the streets, like the ground they walk and spit upon,”.
I did not want to believe him, however.
“I’m going, dad,” I defied. “I’m going with your support or not. I have to do this,”.
The year before I’d gone to India, there was another Black woman in the group. She’d successfully completed the program, and so I thought, “If she can do it, why can’t I?”
I consciously avoided reaching out to her before leaving for my trip. I feared she would tell me things that would convince me not to go, and I was determined to take advantage of this free “adventure of a lifetime”. When I met her, in person, right before I left, I asked her bluntly, albeit too late, if there was anything I needed to know about the way I’d be perceived because of my race while in India.
“Don’t forget who you are,” she said, “And keep your head up high.”
I thought this was all I needed to get through nine months in a country where anti-Blackness is a given. I began to pray the Serenity prayer daily:
“Lord, Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference,” replacing the word “serenity” with “strength”, a common alteration.
This prayer guided me through a number of in-country challenges- through tensions with other members of the group, through mistreatment at the hands of shopkeepers and locals, through internal turmoil. Along with other prayers, advice, and the love and support of my family and friends, including the Black girl from the previous year’s cohort, in-country instructors, counselors, and my homestay family, I was able to remain in India for 6 ½ months before reaching my breaking point. By the time I said to one of my instructors “I think it’s time for me to go,” on a fateful day in early March, I’d been spit on a minimum of three times, called a variation of Kala/Kalu/Kali, the Hindi word for “dark-skinned” which is also often used akin to “nigger” a minimum of ten times each day, been ostracized by most members of my group for reporting a racist member who often racially degraded me, and experienced mental health issues I never thought I’d face. I perpetually wrestled for the first time in my life with the international effects of the West’s enslavement and subjugation of my ancestors, of my brothers and sisters, of its continued exploitation of me. I was a pawn in a system that asked me to sacrifice myself for the betterment of others.
Deciding to come home was my most effective and empowering tool for reclaiming my autonomy. It was a timely decision too, as after I was home for one day, in mid-March, I received a message from other group members that they were coming home in exactly a week due to COVID-19. I’d come home one week before international airways were blocked, before airports completely resembled military checkpoints, before people were too concerned with COVID-19 to analyze the way they’d treated me over the course of the program to apologize. This is only a minuscule fragment of the story of my journey, but I know that it was orchestrated by none other than God Himself.
-
As difficult as my journey in India was, I am grateful for it. It taught me that my Blackness is under attack on virtually every corner of this Earth, that if I don’t love myself, this world never will. It impressed upon me the value of Black love, which I’d observed up close in the relationship of a dear ZImbabwean friend I’d met through my NGO placement and her Ghanian boyfriend. It taught me to use my voice. To REALLY use my voice. To shout my presence from the rooftops and the rafters, to shout to any ear that will listen.
I AM HERE. MY ANCESTORS WERE HERE. MY COMMUNITY IS HERE.
-
This Juneteenth, I remember those who came before me. I remember my ancestors, the Black community’s collective ancestors. I remember the 65,000 African students currently living and studying in India, who are subjected to the horrors I experienced daily over much longer periods of time- many for ten years or longer. I remember my Grandmother, Minella, and her sacrifices. I remember the progress we have made thus far. I remember the progress we have yet to make. I remember George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Tony Mcdade. Oluwatoyin Salau. I remember Masonda Ketada Oliver, a Congolese student and French teacher who was murdered in New Delhi, India in 2016 for the “crime” of trying to hail an autorickshaw. I remember Ahmaud Arbery. I remember Trayvon Martin, who if God spares my life to see my 19th birthday in two months, I will be two years older than when he was brutally murdered. I remember Eric Garner. Michael Brown. Tamir Rice. Amadou Dialou. Sandra Bland. So many others. So many others.

“You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
 Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?
 Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
 Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.”

The women standing up for science
Tumblr media
The female winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics has criticised a senior scientist's comments that physics was "invented and built by men" as "silly". But what do other women in science think?
Dr Donna Strickland became the first woman in 55 years to win the award shortly after the remarks by Prof Alessandro Strumia, who worked for European nuclear research centre Cern, emerged.
He has now been suspended from working with the centre.

It’s damned difficult to do great science when you’re always navigating the minefield of bias and disregard, the expectation that you must make the (psychological) tea; when asserting yourself makes you a bitch - even getting a word in without interruption can be a challenge

Jennifer Rohn, 50, a British-American cell biologist at University College London (UCL)
Getting into it: I can't remember a time when I didn't want to become a scientist. I was voted "most likely to become a scientist" in high school. I was unabashedly geeky and read lots of books. I grew up with no role models in science and was not aware of any famous female scientist. I didn't even meet a scientist until I went to university.
What are you working on? I got tired of the abstract and wanted to work on something that would make an impact. I'm now working on a cure for urinary tract infections. It's the most common reason in the UK that an antibiotic is prescribed - and the most common infection in elderly people, yet few studies have been done on it.
Currently antibiotics can't reach inside the bladder so we are using nano-technology to create little particles of antibiotics that can go inside the bladder wall. We're hoping clinical trials will start late next year, and a cure could be available quite soon afterwards.
Prof Strumia's comments: If you took them at face value, they could be quite demoralising - he is a big-shot professional. Most of what he presented has been debunked and there's been a swift universal rebuttal from the science community of his comments.
Greatest achievement: Managing to cling onto my job. Most women I know were forced to leave. There aren't that many jobs and most go to men.
Memorable moment: An elderly male professor assumed I was the research nurse when he first met me in a lift.
What I've learned: I have been in science for 30 years. I've never seen any evidence that women are not as good as men at science. It's a pervasive view but is simply not true, in my opinion.
Hope for the future: I'm just looking forward to that day when we can be accepted into the club on our own terms. I don't know if that will ever happen.

When people in positions of power in academia behave like this and retain their status they don’t only push one generation of underrepresented groups out of science, but train others that it’s ok to propagate this ideology for years to come.

Getting into it: I had a really great and supportive physics teacher when I was at school, as well as very supportive parents - though they were both medical doctors and that put me off working in the NHS! They did inspire me though to do something I loved and to always be asking questions.
What are you working on? I work with carbon based materials for light emitting diodes. Think of the pixels in your TV screen or your mobile phone. We are looking at light, low-cost, high efficiency and flexible displays.
Prof Strumia's comments: They are really damaging to the community. Most of us realise that having diversity, having people who think differently to you, is so important to research. If you only have people who look and think the same, you will never progress.
Greatest achievement: For me, it was when I was asked to take part in the International Visitor Leadership Programme in the US. There were 48 people representing different countries, and I represented the UK.
Memorable moment: The thing is that the challenges women face in the field are less overt than a moment. There are biases when you apply for a new job, with peer reviews... and it affects non-Western scientists too. Sometimes we are facing sexism and we don't even know it.
What I've learned: There are challenges, but if we work closely together, we can overcome them.
Hope for the future: That we won't have to be excited about one women getting a Nobel Prize in physics and that it instead becomes a yearly occurrence.

American-born Dr Sylvia McLain, 50, is a bio-physicist at the University of Oxford
Getting into it: She spent a long eight years getting a zoology degree as she had to work intermittently cleaning houses, delivering pizzas and working in gas stations to pay for her fees. She became a lab technician but the low pay prompted her to return to her studies, and she got a PhD in chemistry at 36. "I wasn't deeply passionate about science but I was pretty good at it and could earn some decent money."
What are you working on? Research lecturer in the biochemistry department at Oxford University.
Prof Strumia's comments: I think he's weak and feeling threatened. In nature, some oak trees kill off small oak trees so they can grow bigger and stronger.
Greatest achievement: Helping my students achieve their goals or giving them the courage to do something else.
Memorable moment: I'm a middle-of-the-road scientist but I always funded my own research. Every single time I got an award, at least one person would tell me: "You only got it because you are a woman." It's, like, thanks!
What I've learned: I used to want to be seen just as a scientist but you are prejudged for being a woman before you even walk through the door. They don't mean to do it.
Hope for the future: It's very important to listen to each other. I hope we get to the place where people take this seriously.

coworker calls me his “work wife,” error in my offer letter, and more
It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go…
1. My coworker calls me his “work wife”
A couple of months ago, I joined a new team at work, in a role that is somewhat isolated from the rest of the group. So I was glad when another junior staff member who had joined the team a bit earlier reached out and showed me the ropes. As we grew more friendly, we also started sitting next to one another (our office has open seating with no assigned desks), and chatting occasionally during the day. Our remarks were always casual, and though they were not strictly work-related, we never discussed deep or personal topics. So, I was surprised when one day, he began referring to me as his “work wife.”
At first, it was simply in reference to that fact that someone had sat at the desk I usually claimed, breaking up our “marriage.” But in the next few days, he repeated the comment a couple times, once to another colleague. The term “work wife” makes me uncomfortable as it overstates our relationship, and may have a dubious connotation. As a young woman, I worry that it may undermine my professionalism. On the other hand, this colleague uses the term so casually that I don’t think he means anything by it. He is also on my level and does not work on any of the same projects as me, so there is no threat to my performance here.
Am I right to find the term “work wife” strange or is it actually commonly accepted? Either way, how do you think I should proceed here? I don’t want to alienate one of my only friends on my team by bringing this up as some kind of big problem or having a serious talk, but I would rather not deal with these comments.
It’s a common enough term (along with “work husband” and “work spouse”) to refer to someone at work who you’re close with and get along with uncommonly well (and can be same sex or opposite sex), although it sounds like he’s using it where the relationship doesn’t really warrant it. Either way, though, you don’t have to like it and you’re allowed to tell him to stop.
It would be fine to say something to your coworker like, “Hey, I don’t love that term. Let’s just say ‘coworkers.’”
2. My work is excellent but I can’t get promoted
I work at a very large company in a support role, it is basically glorified data entry, but it can call for a little critical thinking in some cases. I out-perform my coworkers by a large margin. On a team of 14 people, I account for 30% of the total productivity on any given day (on busy days, it is 50%). We are assigned work through “tickets,” and when we resolve an issue, we close a ticket. We are able to view how many total tickets the team closed every day, as well as how many we closed ourselves, which is how I have calculated my results.
Management is aware of this and of my aspirations to move up within the company, and they even “fight” for me to get that promotion (at least they say they do) but HR won’t grant the requests due to my lack of time with the company (four years). I would be okay with this if I wasn’t pulling all of the weight and having nothing to show for it.
Management will do things like nominate me for awards, discretionary bonuses, and extra PTO, which is great, but I feel like they are avoiding the real issue, which is the rest of their workforce. What will they do when I am gone? Are they holding me in this position because they know they will be in trouble if they lose me? Am I wrong in asking them to enforce their productivity metrics or raise the bar in order to light a flame under my coworkers? I understand that lazy people are everywhere, but I can’t help but feel as though I am being used as a crutch holding up the weight of our department.
They won’t promote you because you’ve only been there four years? When you said it was due to lack of time with the company, I thought you were going to say you’d only been there six months or something like that. Four years?! That’s ridiculous. At every other company in the world, that’s more than enough time to overcome any tenure rules about promotion.
So either they have a bizarrely ridiculous rule about length of tenure (have they told you how long you’d need to be there before they’d consider it?) or they’re keeping you in your position because you’re doing the work of four people.
“Top performer on a 14-person team, resolving 30-50% of daily tickets” is an excellent line for your resume. Go use it and find a job that rewards you appropriately.
3. Do I need to organize social outings for my staff?
I manage a staff of about 15 people whose offices are scattered across our company’s campus, so there are many members of my team that I won’t see/won’t see each other if it’s not intentional. For our team to function well, it’s important that we communicate and collaborate. To that end, we have standing meetings, regular professional development sessions and occasional group trips to industry conferences, an orientation process that emphasizes getting to know the rest of the department, etc. … all specifically work-day activities.
Previously, I had a couple of staff members who initiated regular happy hours and other social activities, as well. I was grateful for them because when the work day ends, while I truly enjoy my colleagues, I can’t wait to go home to my family and read a book in the bath with a glass of wine after dinner. I am also reluctant to be the organizer of happy hours because I don’t want to create “Ugh, I have to go out after work to make my boss happy” situations. That said, I know many people do like to socialize! With coworkers! And when someone else organized a happy hour, I went for a drink when I could — it was fun and low-key and there was usually a good crowd. I realized recently, however, that after some normal turnover, the main “social directors” are gone and no one has stepped up to take their place. Do I need to take this on? Or can I just go home and lock the door behind me?
You do not need to take this on! You do need to ensure that your team has opportunities to interact and collaborate, and it sounds like you’re doing that. There is nothing that says “and some of those opportunities needs to be after work or with alcohol.”
If you really want to address it, you could say to your whole team, “I’ve realized that since Jane and Fergus left, we haven’t had many happy hours or other social activities since they were generally the organizers. If anyone misses doing those, feel free to organize them! I’m not going to do it myself since I wouldn’t want anyone to feel pressure to attend. But it’s fine if you want to! And fine if you don’t, too.”
4. There’s an error in my offer letter
I recently received an offer from a great company, and the director of the program personally called to extend the offer. When negotiating salary over the phone, the director and I agreed on an hourly pay rate. The pay is not the best and much of the currency comes from getting a foot in this company’s door.
However, I just got my offer letter via email. The letter reflects an annual salary that ends up being less than our agreed upon hourly rate (and it has no mention of the hourly rate we discussed via phone). When I asked if our previously agreed upon hourly rate was used, the director sent me her formula. She calculated 40 hours per week x 4 weeks a month x 12 months a year x my hourly pay rate. Basically, her formula mistakenly uses 48 weeks in a year instead of the correct amount of 52 (essentially shorting me 4 weeks of accumulated pay).
It seems like my only option is to call out the director (whom I’ve met once and is essentially my future boss’s boss’s boss) on her math skills. She’s extremely accomplished, regarded for her intelligence, and generally comes across as someone who does not like to be corrected. How do I advocate for the correct pay without embarrassing her?
If she’s worth working for, she’s not going to penalize you for pointing out that she’s shorting you a month’s worth of pay! Truly — and if she seems to be holding it against you, that’s a huge red flag.
Just be matter of fact! For example: “Ah, it looks like you calculated it using 48 weeks in the year rather than 52. At 52 weeks in a year, it should be $X. Can you confirm that on your end?”
5. I spent 45 minutes helping a student and heard nothing back
I am an allied health practitioner who is sometimes approached by students from the local university for informational interviews or to answer questions about the way I work. I am happy to assist where I can — other professionals in my field certainly gave me similar access during my own training. I suspect that the course faculty are suggesting me as a contact for students because of my willingness here.
A student recently emailed me a set of (numerous) questions about the way I work, my thoughts on the industry, etc. It took about 45 minutes to work through it, so it wasn’t an insignificant request. I am a bit taken aback that the student didn’t reply to acknowledge my response or say thank you. Judging from the question design, I think the student sent it to several practitioners at least.
I feel like I’m saying “I DESERVE GRATITUDE” but really I’m thinking “THIS KID IS GOING TO ALIENATE HALF OF THE LOCAL PRACTITIONERS,” which is hardly fair on the next student who wants help.
It felt unprofessional, as well as a bit discourteous. Am I just being petty? I’m aware that students are often still developing their understanding of professional norms. I’m wondering if I should email the course tutor and suggest they remind students to follow up with an acknowledgement when they’ve asked for someone’s time, without naming the student involved. Would that be an overreaction?
Not at all. It would be doing their students a favor. I encourage you to do it — and be specific about what happened, that you’re happy to help but you spent 45 minutes answering numerous questions and heard not a peep back afterwards.
You could also email the student and say, “I haven’t heard back from you and want to make sure you received this. Assuming you did, I want to mention that courtesy is enormously important in this field (as in most others), and you will alienate people if you don’t acknowledge their time or assistance.”

Interviewer is named Fern Marshall who resides in Scandinavia in the year 8500. She is a dual psychic who also works part-time as a sandwich maker/pie creator serving college students during the week via a food truck that is open from 9am to 3pm Mondays to Saturdays with five other coworkers. During her free time andor sleep-time dreams she travels to various celestial realms for both ideas related to connecting with her multiple muses both for ideas related to her current work and ideas for her writing. Fern Marshall acknowledges that part of her successful self employment stems from a few original business ideas that she got working for an employer over 4 years ago observing the movements and work of over 12 coworkers/leaders. Fern Marshall managed to save up the money to open her own business from money obtained from her fiction writing and money made from savvy stock investment deals.
Anyhow, today during one of her celestial travels she traveled to one of the celestial realms that has a celestial replica of the metropolitan area of Maryland, Washington D.C.,and Virginia combined. Up until the year 2090 there were parts of Maryland and Virginia that were outside of the metropolitan Washington D.C. area for various reasons. However, due to multiple reasons for another post, many compassionate politicians from across the United States gathered to open and spearhead public transit options across the whole of the United States which made it possible for even workers from modest socio-economic backgrounds more job options while saving up money for their cars. By the year 2102 a compassionate group of politicians in collaboration with the U.S. president at the time saw fit to combine Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. via an interconnected bus and train system. As a result, many men, women and children were able to easily reside in communities such as Virginia Beach Virginia and Norfolk Virginia and commute to places such as Bethesda Maryland, College Park Maryland, downtown Washington D.C. and vice versa (workers in College Park Maryland commuting to Hampton Roads Virginia for work via a speed express metro train that would take just 45 minutes and vice versa for instance a worker in Baltimore Maryland being able to ride a train into Chesapeake Virginia in just a matter of 55 minutes). This also helped the overall United States economy for various reasons.
Otto Barry was an employee helped by such a measure. He resided in Virginia Beach Virginia and was able to easily ride a metro rail train from a metro train station less than 3 miles from his home and go to work either in College Park Maryland, Bethesda Maryland, and other places within northern Virginia and downtown Washington D.C. Sometimes he also did work nearby his home in Virginia Beach Virginia as he was a dual writer and a food publicity consultant for colleges in the Hampton Roads Virginia area as well as colleges/universities that were considered part of the immediate metropolitan Washington D.C. era prior to 2090.
Anyhow, Fern Marshall was striving to make contact with one of her celestial muses on how to attract more publicity for her food truck business. She was already making a lot of money on her own but she just needed additional ideas for both more recipes for her sandwich and pie meals as well as to compete with the other 105 multiple food trucks serving students across the Scandinavia area college campuses that were also now combined into a mile long mall business and theme park business built by the year 8495. During one of her meditations Fern Marshall found herself in a celestial realm of a massive theme park that reminded her of a hybrid of Disneyland and Disneyland world from the year 2350. As a psychic she noticed Otto Barry hosting a storytelling presentation that caught the attention of over 9000 spirits temporarily pausing to hear his presentation. Timely enough, the presentation concluded 18 minutes later and Fern Marshall had the chance to speak with him after just an 18 minute wait-she kept busy in this meditation session by talking with one of the celestial employees nearby who was an assistant to Otto Barry for the past 6 years in earth time.
After talking to the assistant named Erma Floyd Fern Marshall learned that Otto Barry has been happily residing in the celestial realm she is visiting since the year 2350 after he transitioned from the earth realms with income of what is early 2000s era of 120,000 American dollars a year after taxes with a net worth of over 8 million dollars after taxes. Otto Barry’s employment helped him live a long, rich, and happy life. Otto Barry has been offered chances to reincarnate into more utopian earth societies where every man, woman, andor child regardless of their ethnicity, intellectual ability, andor socio-economic class they were born into can work for just 10 years and obtain over 10 million dollars in taxes for the rest of their current lifetime. However, for over 3100 years Otto Barry has had wise reasons for avoiding reincarnation on earth. Otto Barry and Fern Marshall vibrationally matched to each other communicating as psychic/food business owner Fern Marshall resides in the society that Otto Barry is thinking about either residing in or being a spirit guide to a female or male spirit who incarnates into this civilization and time period that Fern Marshall is living in. For Fern Marshall for her part vibrationally attracted Otto Barry because he was unknowingly a real live human muse to multiple male and female spirits during his lifetime for those spirits going after certain career, money, andor fitness/weight loss goals. Otto Barry also earned the privilege/right to stay in the celestial non-physical realms if he chooses because he has agreed to be a part-time muse and helper to over hundreds of celestial spirit guides in charge of thousands of male and female spirits residing on earth over the years. The following is an excerpt of the session between Fern Marshall and Otto Barry;
Fern Marshall; Otto Barry, please tell us one of the challenges that transformed into triumph when you were alive.
Otto Barry; In addition to having successful careers in both the military and private sector I worked as a dual career counselor and food publicity consultant across various universities/colleges and even employment centers frequented by thousands of adults across Maryland, Virginia, and downtown Washington D.C. This was after all three of those places merged politically once the interconnected metro rail train and bus routes were added to those places. I won various awards for my work in those two fields. Additionally 3 years prior to my passing from the earth realm, I had received over 1110 letters of appreciation from men and women ages 18 to as old as 98 of various races/ethnicities, intellectual abilities, sexual orientations, place of national origin, religious spiritual beliefs etc. thanking me for helping them transition into certain careers and money success even when the odds seemed stacked against them for various reasons. Less than 3 hours after passing from the earth realm, three of my celestial spirit guides showed me over 100 male and female spirits residing on earth who I was also an unofficial living human muse in their writings, career goals, other areas etc. to via their sleeptime dreams andor other channels. I have to be discreet about my family life for this session as well for karmic and other reasons relating to my descendants with over 9000 of them still alive in your year of 8500 spread across various continents of the earth with 2500 of them residing in Scandinavia alone.
Fern Marshall; How did the early triumph of achieving career and money success as a food publicity consultant as well as receiving over 1110 letters of appreciation affect your spiritual goals ?
Otto Barry; I felt comfortable and self-confident with taking chances both in my food publicity work and with the advice I gave the various men and women helping me. For instance, I was descended from a long list of ambitious men and women who gave advice and examples of how almost anyone can go on to achieve greater career and money success regardless of how their career life was before. For instance, the common belief of people from a person’s previous job affecting their present and future work life was turned on its head to the positive surprise of many people. Many men and women discovered that a person’s past life and their future work lives transform differently in a positive way when they take various chances. For instance, a person who was a stock clerk at one job  that I helped went on to become a successful public relations professional less than 12 years later. Another stock clerk I helped went on to become a famous and successful chef across various universities and hotels within the span of just 10 years. I have even helped hundreds of other minimum wage workers that mainstream society would imply that they should not even bother climbing the wall to greater career and money success. For instance, I have helped a former grocery store bagger find work as a successful chef on a merchant marine ship. Another case study was a food service worker who I helped become a successful import export specialist in the span of just 5 years even though she was far from the mainstream ideals of beauty and intelligence and over 48 years old. I have even helped many men too. For instance, I helped a 50 year old man who wanted to try a different career change as a grocery store manager transition into a successful career as a caterer and part time author less than 2 years later. I also helped a 52 year old man who was outside the mainstream ideal of intellectual ability cross over from a janitor/custodial cleaner to a thriving event planner making 3 times his after tax income within the span of just 18 months much to the surprise of everyone who knew him.  I would usually give tough love advice by reminding various clients not just women that how they look does matter and usually I would encourage many of them to work on their weight and eat most of their food earlier in the day even if they have to schedule doing that first thing in the day. I even bluntly told 3 women that I agree with them that they ought to keep their hair long but to do what they legally can to get thinner as soon as possible while still finding ways to feed themselves at least 1000 to 1200 calories a day and adjusting when needed but to avoid dipping below 1000 calories. Many people in my life would tell me that I was being tough on them especially women in their 30s, 40s, and older receiving this advice. However, many of those same critics were silenced once they noticed many of these clients, especially females, go from size 14 to a size 2 in just 8 months or less. All of these female clients even shared that their job offers andor promotion opportunities tripled once they reached size 6 or smaller.  Some of my male and female clients did not have to fortunately wait until they got thinner to positively enhance their career andor money lives andor reputation. Many of my clients also improved their professional and other areas of their lives once they took my advice to get both therapy and volunteering based on the schedules and timeframes I gave them. For instance, chid-free clients of mine whether male or female and depending on if they are married are going to be given different schedules as they may obviously have more time than lets say a woman of three or more children who also want advice for volunteering and therapy. Many times the volunteer and therapy regimen I advised depending on a person’s situation would help because many of my clients built important relationship building and social skills that were forged during their volunteering andor therapy.
Fern Marshall; Otto Barry, any education or wisdom that you wish to share andor wish to have pursued when you were still alive?
Otto Barry; Well, I would recommend that a person keep persisting with striving to match their schedule up with their goals even if one goal has to take priority over the other. For instance, I have had during my lifetime at least 100 female clients who wanted to be writers and lose weight at the same time. I would have to frequently gently advise them to find a way to make time for their eating in their place of residence/eating early if eating out and then doing their writing even if they have to change how frequently during they week they write. Reluctantly many of them wrote in their schedules as I advised to do this even though many of them at first had withdrawal symptoms from having to change how often they write.  The caveat was that many of them still needed to also carefully allow enough time for therapy andor volunteering so the time to exercise or walk had to be carefully budgeted in similar to a money budget. However, seeing many of their successes and smiles on their face after they reached size 8 or smaller motivated me to schedule my goals in frequency depending on immediate priority. I also followed my own advice to be passionate about where I reside even when other career coaches were telling other people to focus more on the company andor job you work for. I say this because by the year 2300 on earth the U.S. government did at least become more compassionate and automatically give each U.S. citizen the equivalent of their own place to reside when they turned 18 depending on their previous income and 1800 dollars after taxes each month in early 2000s money regardless of how much money they made at their job. This actually stimulated the U.S. economy further even though the job market became even more competitive with an increased population. However, even by the year 2300 many jobs were sometimes taken away from these citizens, some of who traded a place they wanted to live for the job they want. I then noticed that the American citizens who went more by where they wanted to live rather than focus on a certain company or job fared better and thrived more in the long-term regardless of what other people around them andor the general public thought of their ideas even when those same American citizens passionate about living in a certain area had to work multiple jobs/careers throughout their lifetimes. All of my success stories of those letters I told you about were from clients who took my advice to focus more on where they wanted to live the rest of their lives rather than focus on one particular company andor job. As a result, I aimed to live by that motto during that lifetime. I also encouraged many of them and myself to keep written letters of communications they had of their celestial spirit ally team regardless of how outrageous andor crazy it seemed at the time. Many of my clients reported getting advice either in their sleeptime dreams andor various ways in their waking life from their celestial spirit ally team when doing this, and being able to use that advice to enrich their lives in various ways whether it was financially spiritually professionally etc. Whenever a client was too concerned about public judgment I got them to become braver by initially starting a post of their 3 weekly, at least 23 days andor monthly intent and then writing how they imagine their celestial spirit ally team communicated to them within 6 days or less and at least once a week and/or more. Many of those clients also reported to me various success stories within 7 months or less of taking my advice. Within 2 hours of me crossing over from the earth realm into the celestial realms, 4 of my female and male heaven based spirit guides showed me through a futuristic hologram the countless souls I had helped just with that advice alone.
Fern Marshall; Please excuse me for interrupting but before you give what I intuitively to be information from your intuitive heart can you please tell me where in the celestial realms you reside andor what you world looks like from your perspective.
Otto Barry; As my celestial assistant shared with you, I have chosen for over 3000 years to reside in the celestial realms that have heaven based replicas of 2300s era downtown Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia combined with modern touches of what earth based citizens from the 8000s living in this area would experience. This gives me the best of both worlds and helps me in my spiritual work as a part-time muse. I have also visited hundreds of worlds some of which even you as a psychic traveler have yet to see yet I must keep secret as some of these worlds I was told by one of your main spirit guides that you must only see after your passing from the earth realm.
Fern Marshall; Are you allowed to tell me when I may pass from the earth realm
Otto Barry; I see the concern radiating from your spirit for you to know for the sake of both family members and friends who know you but I have also been encouraged and told to avoid doing so for both your protection and for celestial karmic reasons.
Fern Marshall; I see and understand even if it is different from what I would like to hear.
Otto Barry; I am glad that you do but please understand that you are going to find out what you need to in the right timing since you have subconsciously sent out the request and it has been noted by your celestial spirit ally team that reside and visit multiple heaven worlds of divine love and divine happiness as you do. Two more pieces of advice I have to share with you before I join 3 female spirits near an orange mountain/celestial museum hybrid-as they are requesting my assistance as a part-time muse- is this; For both men and women; it is possible to find out what you are meant to find out whether it is for greater wisdom, career direction, andor other ideas if you simply request from your heaven higher self and heaven celestial spirit ally team to find out in divine right timing in alignment with your divine life purpose/divine destiny. The second before you Fern Marshall wake up; Regardless of the career that an earth based spirit is currently working in andor even if that female andor male spirit has yet to find employment and regardless of their own nationality one must find a way to get persevere past the judgment of others and look to the dominant culture/national origin of your spouse/long-term partner/can be adapted to sexual orientation for others depending on their relationship status when thinking of career ideas/areas where your muse wants you to study for your own creative inspiration as outlandish as this seems for the rest of your current lifetime. However, the caveat is that only if the male or female is open to doing so. However, Fern Marshall as I sense you are open to doing so I am sharing that piece of advice with you. For instance a male regardless of his race is actually following some of the ideas of his muse when he decides to execute some of his career ideas based on the culture origin of his partner even when they are both different races/ethnicities, the same for a female. For you Fern Marshall-your main male celestial spirit guide is telling me that there is a reason why he led you to an article outlining your husband’s and husband’s parents country of origin less than a few hours after you were thinking of crafting some food ideas and other career and benevolent ideas inspired by the country of origin of your family. Fern Marshall for any of your friends who have yet to marry andor partner up it would be the male or female who they felt the most passionate about romantically speaking in their current lifetime in case they ask you andor are wondering. I conclude our session with much love and will meet with you again within 3 years or less of your earth based time, the 3 years or less because it depends on the mutual agreement of our celestial spirit guides/angels and our celestial higher selves-a discussion for another time.

I actually discussed my comments on this yesterday. I admitted that I would vote for Oprah and gave reasons why, but I had a feeling that President Donald Trump was encouraging Oprah Winfrey to run because her running would make it easier for all of us to have to say President Donald Trump in 2020 regardless of who wanted him to be President in 2020 or a one term president. Even with my political beliefs I wish both Oprah Winfrey and President Donald Trump well. I actually wanted Hillary Clinton to win when I voted for her but for the sake of all of us I hope that President Donald Trump does good for all American citizens regardless of how long he is president and that he cooperates with and is understanding/supportive of special counsel Robert Mueller and other officials who are questioning him for good reason. I reluctantly admit that the a measure that I saw online of President Donald Trump implementing is going to make whoever competes with President Donald Trump in 2020 a strong fight as he is forging a strong legacy with the military population. The military population may be just a small segment of America yet it is common knowledge that many military members have significant connections with family members, friends, and other associates from both the military and private sectors from various races/ethnicities who are significant voting blocs. I also still stand by my sentiment that Oprah Winfrey would also need to speak with Hillary Clinton if she does run and garner her support if possible.that's what I get for writing my comment before doublechecking, the measure I was referring to pertains to a military measure that President Donald Trump signed into executive order that would provide Veteran's Assistance to from what appears military veterans who have been discharged from the military within a year or less.Trump doesn't foresee Oprah presidential run, but predicts he would beat herBy Cheyenne Haslett Good Morning Americahttps://www.yahoo.com/gma/oprah-not-actively-considering-2020-run-says-close-172009169--abc-news-topstories.html
I actually seen a story on this on the grio website and commented on it. I personally do not yet have an instagram account and I also do not internet stalk Meghan Markle as I only have so much time in the day to do certain activities even when they are activities  I want and even with more free time on my hands compared to most people I know. However, I still stand my sentiment that years from now, even if she goes on to achieve more career and money success, Meghan Markle is going to secretly wish that she  maintained at least one of her accounts whether that is facebook, twitter, or instagram. However, due to some of the public judgment that has been harshly and unjustly inflicted on Meghan Markle just because of her being involved in a high public profile interracial relationship I can easily understand why she would take the precautions that she sees fit even if she closed her accounts for other reasons having little to do with her upcoming marriage andor high profile interracial relationship with Prince Harry. Either way, I do wish both Meghan Markle and Prince Harry well and much good luck in their marriage.Meghan Markle closes social media accounts after engagement to Prince HarryCAROLYN DURAND and KATIE KINDELAN,Good Morning Americ

I had actually seen some coverage on CNN less than a few months ago where Louis C.K. admitted to his behavior and was wise to avoid victim blaming. I felt that he was actually being mature and considerate to the women he sexually harassed when he acknowledged and admitted his behavior, his public statement seemed to also express remorse about his behavior. I do believe that he deserves a second chance in light of the investigation.

I admire Danica Patrick’s boldness in trying her hand with her new book of Pretty Intense that is a mind, body, and food plan, and I am guessing that her book sales are going to do well. It is also easy to guess why she would choose North Carolina as one of the places to promote her book. However, as outlandish as it seems I think that it would also be advantageous for her to promote her book in parts of Nevada,Florida, California, Washington State, parts of the Washington D.C. area, parts of Maryland, and parts of Virginia if possible.Column: Danica Patrick shifts careers, courts new fan baseBy USATODAY

Interview with the recently departed for career info fictional creative imagination series post 3 freestyle story by Stella Carrier
January 10, 2018
Interview with the recently departed for career info fictional creative imagination series post 3 freestyle story by Stella Carrier to start Wednesday January 10, 2018 and to continue on until at least ideally February 1, 2018 andor later depending on personal intuitive andor logical insights channeled from my creative subconscious/intent to channel the wisdom, knowledge, love, and creativity of multiple heaven worlds of divine love and divine happiness both present and future
I preface this creative fiction story by making it clear that I Stella Carrier feel blessed for my current food services job at the University of Maryland College Park which pays well for what I do, and allows me to work with both fair leaders and ambitious coworkers. I I intend and prefer to work at my current University of Maryland College Park food services job for the rest of my remaining time of residing in the Washington D.C. area.
I Stella Carrier Humbly Call Upon What I Imagine To Be The Influence of Benevolent Spirits From the Heavenly Realms, my higher self, and my celestial spirit ally team for creativity in both my writings and all other areas of my life both present and future. I also welcome any and all forms of spiritual assistance and divine intervention in all areas of my life both present and future.

Interview with the recently departed for career info fictional creative imagination series post 3 freestyle story by Stella Carrier
After talking to the assistant named Erma Floyd Fern Marshall learned that Otto Barry has been happily residing in the celestial realm she is visiting since the year 2350 after he transitioned from the earth realms with income of what is early 2000s era of 120,000 American dollars a year after taxes with a net worth of over 8 million dollars after taxes. Otto Barry’s employment helped him live a long, rich, and happy life. Otto Barry has been offered chances to reincarnate into more utopian earth societies where every man, woman, andor child regardless of their ethnicity, intellectual ability, andor socio-economic class they were born into can work for just 10 years and obtain over 10 million dollars in taxes for the rest of their current lifetime. However, for over 3100 years Otto Barry has had wise reasons for avoiding reincarnation on earth. Otto Barry and Fern Marshall vibrationally matched to each other communicating as psychic/food business owner Fern Marshall resides in the society that Otto Barry is thinking about either residing in or being a spirit guide to a female or male spirit who incarnates into this civilization and time period that Fern Marshall is living in. For Fern Marshall for her part vibrationally attracted Otto Barry because he was unknowingly a real live human muse to multiple male and female spirits during his lifetime for those spirits going after certain career, money, andor fitness/weight loss goals. Otto Barry also earned the privilege/right to stay in the celestial non-physical realms if he chooses because he has agreed to be a part-time muse and helper to over hundreds of celestial spirit guides in charge of thousands of male and female spirits residing on earth over the years. The following is an excerpt of the session between Fern Marshall and Otto Barry;

8 Women in Craft Beer Who are Making a Mark Right Now
Jen Cuesta, Betsy Lay and Kate Power, the co-founders of Lady Justice Brewing. (Credit: Lady Justice Brewing)
March 7, 2017
Women leading craft beer businesses certainly isn’t unusual. A 2014 Stanford survey of 2,500 breweries found that 21 percent had at least one woman in a leading role, which, as our Julia Herz points out, is relatively high when compared to other industries.
You likely know the names of the women in beer pioneers, like New Belgium’s Kim Jordan, Odell’s Wynne Odell, Jennifer Glanville from Boston Beer and Lost Abbey’s Gwen Conoley.
Those are big shoes to fill, but here are eight women who are making a mark in craft beer right now.

Liz Preston is the head, and only, brewer at Prestonrose Farm and Brewing. “We brew beer just as fast as we can.”
Prestonrose is an organic farm that added a small-batch brewery (1-barrel nano system) in the past year. It’s truly a family affair. Liz’s husband handles the sales, retail and “schmoozing” according to Liz. “We hope to offer the farm/brewery as a venue, as an educational opportunity for students and community members to come to and learn everything from cheese and beer making to composting to harvest and storage of food,” said Liz.
Liz was in the molecular science field before this, so being in a male-dominated field is not new to her.
“If I’m the only female brewer in a room of male brewers, I don’t shy away from talking shop, and I don’t feel like they’re judging me based on my gender. I try very hard, though, to be considered a good brewer rather than a good female brewer.”
Jess Reiser | Co-owner, Burial Beer | Asheville, North Carolina
Jess Reiser is a co-founder of Asheville’s Burial Beer Co. (Credit: Burial Beer Co.)
Asheville is a mecca for craft beer lovers in the East. Among dozens of breweries, Burial Beer stands out for its unique and forward-thinking flavors. “Beer is like art and the more you understand the background and the mindset the more you will appreciate the final product,” said Jess Reiser, co-owner of Burial Beer. Reiser says she sees more women getting into craft beer and has felt nothing but respect from male colleagues.
So what does Riser see as the next big thing in craft beer? “The return to styles like Pilsener and Kolsch: an homage to historical beers that take patience and that don’t hide behind adjuncts or aggressive dry hopping. Kate Power, Betsy Lay, Jen Cuesta | Co-founders of Lady Justice Brewing | Mountain View, Colorado
Lady Justice Brewing is run by a trifecta of female innovators. “Our mission at Lady Justice is to brew and sell great beer, then donate all our profits over costs to organizations that support the status and opportunities for women and girls,” say the women of Lady Justice.
Lady Justice considers itself a philanthropic brewery. It’s completely female-founded, owned and managed. The three founders have come up with some innovative ideas in craft beer: they’re distributed primarily through a community beer share.
“Members buy a 6-month membership and then get a hand-bottled, small batch bomber of beer in return, in addition to other goodies.”
Dr. Nicole Garneau, PhD | Scientist | Denver

Dr. Nicole Garneau wears many hats: Curator/Chair of the Health Sciences Department at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, co-author of the beer flavor map and co-founder of DraughtLab (and CraftBeer.com science contributor). But get her talking about craft beer and you can see where her passion lies. “My career as a woman in science … craft beer opened my world up.”
For those of you who think science and craft beer are odd bedfellows, Dr. Garneau explains, “The microbiology, the genetics, the chemistry —all those pieces and more tied to the brewing operation and right down to the consumer and what they’re experiencing.”
Through her research into sensory perception, Dr. Garneau is helping the craft beer industry understand the roles of taste, aroma and texture on flavor. She says everyone experiences flavor differently.
“Women, in all the studies for taste, are more sensitive than men in their ability to detect flavor attributes,” said Dr. Garneau. “Right out of the gate there’s a palate difference that’s simply based on your biological sex.”

Chelsea Nolan | Brewer, The Alchemist | Stowe, Vermont
Chelsea Nolan is not afraid to get dirty, which is a prerequisite for a brewer. On any given day, you can find her cleaning the kettles, lifting bags and, in general, creating great beer.

“I got my start in craft beer in the retail shop in Waterbury, when the retail shop closed, I decided to take the opportunity to get my hands in every aspect of the brewery,” Nolan says.
Like many people who make a career in craft beer, Nolan says there’s a lot of on-the-job learning.
“I eventually found myself hanging around the brew house more often. Eventually, I started following each brewer around, learning their individual techniques, and of course always getting the same amazing end result like Heady Topper (a flagship beer for Alchemist).”
Owned by a husband and wife team, The Alchemist started as a brewpub in Waterbury, Vermont. They’ve now expanded to include two production breweries which distribute regionally. What does Chelsea think is the next big thing in craft beer?
“I’m noticing a growing trend of the use of lupulin powder amongst different breweries. It’s always exciting to see new stuff flourish in the beer world,” she tells us.
Saralyn Grass | Co-founder, Grasslands Brewery | Tallahassee, Florida

For Saralyn Grass the focus for Grasslands Brewery is local. “We use a lot of ingredients from right here in Tallahassee and the surrounding area. Sometimes from a friend’s farm and we even partnered with the local college to use their muscadines in a beer.”
Finding local inspiration led Grasslands to create some truly unique beers, including an award-winning dill pickle gose and a beer called Margie-Rita which is named after a female investor named (you guessed it) Margie.
The local mantra doesn’t solely apply to Grasslands’ ingredients. It’s also the atmosphere the brewery is hoping to achieve. They have an LGBTQ night at the brewery and make sure they donate something to most groups that request their help.
“We just really want everybody to feel like Grasslands is their place. Like a ‘Cheers’-type of place.”
