Is Classical Music Dead? (Essay)

How does society determine when a particular genre of music is dead? From this question, multiple others are born. For example, do we consider that the inspiration from music continued throughout popular genres as the survival of what it was originally? Or is it dead because it has changed into something different from its original form? When it comes to classical music, it isn’t really as question about whether or not it is dead, but if it’s dying. Classical music is still being performed, listened to, and celebrated in communities today, so calling it dead seems premature, even foolish. That’s not to say that the average person believing classical music is dying is without merit; classical music isn’t usually on the radar for say a random person asked off the street. However, when looked at from the perspective of the musical community, classical music is positively flourishing and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.

           In a New York Times Article, a violinist showed concern that the classical music industry was dying. Some readers responded in letters reacting to the concerns she expressed. The violinist started by saying, “A schoolboy recently asked me if Richard Wagner was a pitcher for the Yankees. At that moment I feared that classical music in America was doomed” (Dreyer). Like this violinist expressed, most people in the music community, and outside the community, acknowledge that classical music isn’t a subject that most people going through life know a whole lot about. While many know some parts of classical pieces and perhaps some names of famous composers, their knowledge is surface level and, for the most part, they don’t seek to learn more. This reflects in some worrying trends in the industry. Classical radio stations were shutting down, concerts were being reduced and canceled, less and less were classical musicians being discussed (Dreyer). Classical music simply isn’t popular. But from this trend came a great wave of musicians, teachers, and lovers of classical music who were determined to spread the love and knowledge of a music they deemed immensely important, and rightfully so.

           Most all of the music we have and enjoy today has elements that came from classical music, from the most basic to the more complex. The major-minor scale system that is commonly used in the majority of today’s music was first put into use in the baroque period. It was in this period that the scale system was also standardized (Willoughby). In fact, the baroque period standardized a great many musical tools, styles, and elements. From this period developed keyboard music, which lead to the invention of the modern piano, an instrument that can be argued to be the most important instrument when it comes to creating music, harmony, a base element in most music performed today, and the establishment of the orchestra (Willoughby). It would take a long time to list all of the musical elements gained and standardized in the baroque period, but it is certain that music would not look nearly the same if not for the major development that occurred.

           The baroque period, while very important, wasn’t the only period that significantly influenced music. The romantic period brought what was missing from music in the baroque period back into the musical community, emotion. A big emphasis on music today is how it makes the listener feel. While the baroque period brought technicality, all emotion was sacrificed for ridged structure and extremely complex technique. Beethoven put emotion into his music, effectively shifting people’s approach to composing. Willoughby writes, “These attributes of Beethoven mirror the attributes of the Romantic period as a whole; it was a time when artistic expression became highly individual and personal, and also highly emotional” (Willoughby, 253). With this wave of emotion came another change; music started being made for music’s sake. Composers started writing what they wanted to hear instead of what was popular or what the church needed for service. A large part of what music is now has come from classical music, and most people within the music community, of many genres, understand and respect this.

           It is important to be noted that while people respect the roots that classical music has provided, that doesn’t mean that people are very supportive of how it exists, or rather, how they believe it exists. There is a notion that classical music is elitist, for the rich and privileged only. One could point to the expensive ticketing for opera and ballets and orchestra performances to prove this point, but there are many things that are just as or even more expensive than these tickets that people don’t find elitist—for example, sporting events (Cross-eyed Pianist). Some people will point at the etiquette and dress for attendance at a concert hall. The fact remains, however, that opera houses and concert halls have no official dress code or strict rules everyone must follow. Music blogger and commenter goes on to say, “It troubles me, this negative perception of classical music and its fans, and it strikes me that currently there is an image crisis surrounding classical music. It wasn’t always like this. When I was growing up in the 1970s, there was more classical music in our everyday lives” (Cross-eyed Pianist). Most people have the notion that classical music is only accessible to and is only made for those better off than themselves, even though it has been available to and made for everyone’s ears for centuries now.

With that in mind, the love for classical music itself has not died out yet. There is a vast and passionate community of musicians, teachers, and listeners who adore classical music and saw it failing in the wider community. These people have worked hard and are continuing to work hard to spread a passion for classical music. An excellent example of some people doing this is the YouTube duo who run the channel Two Set Violin. On this channel they make comedy sketches, play games, and react to videos. All of this content is tied together by one thing, classical music. Brett and Eddy, the two friends who run Two Set, are professionally trained violinists who decided to make a YouTube channel to try and spread love for classical music. It was also important to them to make classical music and the education of classical music more accessible. They teach about music in an engaging, funny way all while encouraging their audience to create and perform music. Their saying is simply ‘practice’. They encourage their musician audience members by reminding them that no one who is really good at playing an instrument got there without hard work and tell them to keep practicing. Two Set has even brought on large musicians like Hillary Han and Benny Chen to talk about their experiences and the importance of practicing. This helps to break the stereotype of not only what a classical musician looks like, but how they act and how much work goes into their music. In one video, while reacting to an American Idol performance with two violinists, one of the judges says, “It’s so nice to see such young, good looking guys that play the violin because usually they’re like old and bald and, you know, a bit greasy” (Two Set Violin). They respond by pointing out that they themselves are young and that this is a negative stereotype. In another video they react to a man that says he is the fastest violin player in the world. Brett says, “the world needs to know that classical music is more than just playing fast” (Two Set Violin).  In these two videos, Brett and Eddy are challenging the media’s, and greater public’s, view of classical music, the view that classical music is old, for old people, and the people who participate are elitists who only care about perfection and technicality. And they have done so much more than videos like these reaction to other musicians. They have had videos where they have their followers compose a piece and send it to them to play. They have asked people to send in clips of them performing for them to react to. In so many ways these two violinists have gotten so many people involved in classical music. Over the years they have grown a great following of people who love participating in classical music, whether that be through performance or listening; as of today, they have almost 3 million subscribers (Two Set Violin). Brett and Eddy aren’t the only people who have gotten the public more involved in classical music. As social media has grown, classical musicians have become increasingly accessible to the public. The violinist Hillary Han often posts on Instagram videos of her practicing and other music related things, but she also speaks on social issues and gives insight into her life. This shows all 300,000 followers she is human (violincase).

           It is difficult to say whether or not a musical genre is dead, and even harder to say if it’s dying. The act of music dying would take centuries, and even then, there are arguments to be made that because other music that exists was influenced by the ‘dead’ music, it still lives. Classical music was the popular music for centuries, its memory will not so easily fade, especially to the point where it is considered a dead genre. Even if it is not a popular genre today, classical music is being kept alive by the musicians who perform it and the people who love to listen to it. Music is art that decorates and marks time, and so, as long as people paint time with classical music, it is not dead.

Film Review of Vision Portraits by Ella Blondin

As the producer, lead role, and director of Vision Portraits (2019), Rodney Evans allows audiences to explore the lives of various artists throughout his award-winning film. Evans himself practices the art of filmmaking. In the documentary, viewers are  introduced to the creative endeavors and daily lifestyles of a writer named Ryan Knighton, a dancer named Kayla Hamilton, and a photographer named John Dugdale. Despite their different artistic interests, something shared by each of the four featured individuals featured is their personal struggle with vision impairment. Evans shares his powerful story of trying to make his art form of filmmaking work with his newfound peripheral blindness. Throughout his journey, he seeks solace in, and shares the stories, of artists in similar situations. Using the personal experiences of other artists and himself, Evans provides an intersectional approach to how blindness and disability impacts individuals in society, while addressing themes of ableism and social constructs about able-bodiedness.

     Overall, I assert that this film was very successful in presenting its content with intersectional objectivity. Intersectional theory refers to the understanding that different forms of oppression and social constructs can “intersect”, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging these overlapping systems of discrimination when dealing with social issues. (Bauer) Even though the main topic of the film is blindness, Evans still acknowledges other forms of oppression and how they might affect an individual when they crossover in different ways. Specifically, the experiences of the dancer Kayla Hamilton demonstrate this film’s intersectional perspective because she discusses not only her blindness, but other ways by which she has been oppressed in life.  From being born with one sightless eye and developing cataracts, vision impairment had always been a part of Hamilton’s life. In the film, she confesses that the impact blindness was having on both her daily life and her passion of dancing pushed her to suicidal tendencies because she felt helpless and incompetent. Regarding disability, race, gender, or multiple forms of oppression at once as an obstacle or “abnormal” can make one feel like they are a “deviation from society”. (Ahmed, 121) However, Hamilton channeled these negative emotions into her art. She created a dance performance called “Blindsided”, during which her audience members must wear an eyepatch to understand how being visually impaired affects perception. By incorporating visual and musical aspects of her culture, Hamilton also addresses themes of racism and discrimination in the show, based on her personal experiences as an African-American woman. Through this multifaceted performance, the in-person viewers of Hamilton’s dancing and my fellow movie-goers were exposed to a visual and musical representation of how various forms of discrimination can cross over to magnify the amount of oppression one faces in society. Rather than allowing feelings of ostracization in society to deter her, Hamilton chooses to continue passionately dancing and choreographing, using her love of the art to embrace her differences as qualities, rather than identifying them as flaws. I think that Evans' choice to interview her was an excellent addition to this documentary to enhance its intersectionality. As made clear in Kayla Hamilton’s case, blindness and disability are highly deserving of awareness, but it is imperative that other forms of discrimination are considered. 

     The concepts of able-bodiedness as normalcy, as well as the ableism that commonly accompanies this social construct, are strong themes in Vision Portraits. Ableism refers to discrimination against people with disabilities, and the belief that being able-bodied is the social norm. (Hehir, 1) Photographer John Dugdale’s interview includes his encounters with ableism because of his blindness. Dugdale was diagnosed with AIDS which eventually induced a stroke, causing mobility issues and blindness. Dugdale notes in the movie that one of the first things his parents said to him in the hospital prior to the incident was that the accident was a shame because his career was going so well. This implies that he could no longer be a photographer because of his newfound disability, making it an act of ableism coming from Dugdale’s own family. I found this moment in the film greatly demonstrative of the social construct that being able-bodied is normal, and that having a disability renders one less capable. Even the family members of those with disabilities can possess this normative mindset. Instead of listening to his parents, Dugdalecontinues to actively take photos, even incorporating themes of blindness into his new series. For example, he photographed himself with a fellow blind and homosexual man, emphasizing sensations like touch and taste in the composition to represent how they now rely on other senses when navigating their daily lives. Instead of viewing his disability as an obstacle or tragedy, Dugdale embraced it. He makes the profound statement that, “until [I] was blind, I could never really see.” As researcher Alison Harnett says, “... it should not be assumed that it is the ultimate goal of a disabled person to be cured. The underlying message … of this logic is that disabled people can never be happy as they are and must change to be accepted …” (Harnett, 22). Dugdale insisted that learning to accept his blindness and continue his life normally brought him happiness and insight into his artwork. By continuing his photography with undying creativity, resilience, and passion, Dugdale’s story in this film contributes to the abolishment of ableist mindsets. As a member of the theatre’s audience, I now understand how people with disabilities should not be viewed as requiring a cure or change that suits them to society’s construct of able-bodied normalcy, but should be perceived as individuals who possess the same competence and potential as anyone else.

     To conclude, Rodney Evans earned my praise not only for his consistent intersectional perspective in his film Vision Portraits, but also for presenting various struggles with disability in such a creative, objective, and impactful manner. Evans uses his talent as a filmmaker to enlighten audiences about the reality of being a visually impaired member of society. Oppression against people with disabilities is a topic that is under-addressed in the worlds of pop culture and academia. By using real life stories and personal experiences in his documentary, Evans makes viewers aware of our tendency to categorize able-bodiedness as normalcy. Although Evans and the other blind artists featured in the film face challenges with their art, it does not mean they are abnormal or less talented; such a mindset would be ableist and discriminatory. I stand by my belief that Vision Portraits contains messages and themes of acceptance and intersectionality that have the ability to push society towards a future in which people with disabilities are not subjected to discrimination.

3. The Kertia

-Although they're extremely loyal to the lord, as individuals they have one certain person they will put above all others. Whether this be the lord, a family member, the noblesse, etc.

-Commonly they are either blonde or brunette and tall. Rael uh... got unlucky in the height factor. Also the most attractive clan (for the nobles) in general though they tie with the ??? clan. Also they all generally have straight hair.

-Very strong sixth sense. So strong that some can even make accurate predictions about things, also the future. They can get seers but this is very rare and needs one of the 'parents' to have that running in their blood (aka the Kertias have something to fall back on if they aren't needed as assassins anymore lol).

-Are not exactly the best morally. This is partly due to being nobles and partly due to them just being Kertia. Examples include them letting their babies cry for ages to make them more 'independent' (we call that abuse...), letting little kids play with sharp objects (...yea i know y'all assassins but still), and more. Not only things like that though, they will place the person they are loyal to above all else and prioritise them to the point they may hurt (emotionally, physically, whatever) their own lover, sibling, etc. Plus other stuff that I won't mention.

-Despite being such dedicated and amazing nobles, they're all dumb as shit. No seriously if nobles in general are gullible than the Kertia are the worst off even though they have their sixth sense. They're just stupid in general though, like repeating the thing that made you fail isn't exactly going to help... please stop walking into the exact same wall 300 times in one week.

-Also the most emotionally constipated clan... They are very bad at displaying their emotions and so we have travesties like the relationship between Rajak and Rael.

-Clan distribution is more in favour of men (about 70-80%) though the women are monsters. Moreso than the men.

4. The Landegre

-They don't have much of a general height. It's all over the place. Most of them have that distinct white hair with black streaks but some will have black with white instead. There are also those who just have plain black or white hair (or features from other clans though). They do not tend to look like porcelain dolls though (Regis is just cute haha), if they do it's probably not from the Landegre side originally.

-As knights it's pretty common to see a lot of the Landegre wearing clothes that look like armour. Whether it be light (just padding, leather, some chainmail) or full on metallic.

-Very stubborn as shown in canon. This applies regardless of their personality type. Whether they're the calm and collected type, an absolute asshole, a two-sided snake, gentle, etc.

-The most rational and normal ones when it comes down to it. This also means that they very often have high positions of power.

-They get along with pretty much everyone. There isn't any clan that they generally aren't close to.

-Like the Mergas a large part of the clan is in the Central Knights.

-Clan has an an equal distribution of the sexes.

5. The Elenors

-MAGIC. Okay so their magic works like this. They have it flowing in their blood vessels but they have a specific organ that creates it (wild i kno). The rate at which this is created is affected by matter that is taken in, state of the noble (exhaustion, emotional, etc), and just their metabolism in general as well as other stuff. So they don't need to chant anything though they can to focus better. The actual learning process is to make them aware of the magic inside them, and learn how to manipulate it so they can bring it out of them. Once it's outside they need to learn how to manipulate it further which is extremely complicated. There are many branches of magic and each Elenor specialises in whatever they want. Making potions is also considered a branch of magic and not just something that can be done by any Elenor. Most Elenors will specialise in two or three branches but those who live longer will have more.

-Most common hair colours are blacks and browns with the occasional green (recessive gene). No reds (if they do it's originally from another clan). Once again no general height but they tend to be in the extremes. Either really tall or really short.

-Very easily influenced by the company they have. As such it's common in the clan to only be close with certain clans or people because they don't want to be influenced negatively. This influence refers to their personality and views mostly. Habits not really.

-They tend to have amazing singing voices, like sirens. Nobles generally can become good singers since they have so much time to practice, but they're naturals and their singing has an almost ethereal quality. Most don't sing often though so they aren't as great as nobles who do regardless of clan.

-Not interested in children as much as other other nobles so their clan is somewhat smaller too. Romantic interest is still pretty common amongst them but can be extremely short lived.

-They all are very deep into their research and their own things. Not necessarily magic; it can be hobbies, science, etc. A lot of them do adore science though. Makes it easier for them to understand magic and vice versa.

-Their clan distribution favours women heavily. About 70% are women.

6. The Drosia

-Blondes and that's it. Even with Drosias with parents from different clans they'll almost always be blonde.

-They all have sword fetishes and honestly. Relatable.
