——CHARACTER  STUDY.

LAYER 001 :    THE OUTSIDE.

NAME  :     Hua Mulan

EYE   COLOUR  :      dark brown almost black.

HAIR   STYLE   /   COLOUR  :     in the main verse, mulan has long thick black straight silky hair, that falls past her lower back. It is held up either half way, or fully in a ponytail ( depending if she is on a mission or not ) by a silk ribbon that matches her outfit. it is rarely down unless she has complete trust in the person she is with. More modern verses, her hair is still long but falls to her lower back & will most likely be down, unless on business, in which it might be in a bun held up by a clip or ribbon. 

HEIGHT  :   5′2″.

CLOTHING   STYLE  :   Mulan prefers, in the main verse, to be wearing hanfu, mostly white, due to the fact that it is breathable & still gives her plenty of room to fight & hide weapons on her person. She is known to wear black, should she be on a mission or working, most likely fighting gear for stealth. She does have imperial armor, that has a golden phoenix design that she wears while in the military & or at war. In the modern verses, she will be seen wearing dresses & skirts. & while at home, she will tend to steal her lovers clothing & wear them around the house/apartment for comfort. 

BEST   PHYSICAL   FEATURE  :    her bright smile, that tends to light up her features. 

LAYER 002 :    THE  INSIDE.

FEARS  :     thanatophobia, but she does not fear for her own death, but instead of losing someone she loves. Not being strong enough to protect the people she cares for. Not being good enough. being left behind. 

GUILTY   PLEASURE  :    Going out to eat, instead of learning how to cook ( except the yakuza verse where she does enjoy cooking as a hobby ), watching a cdrama instead of focusing on her work ( it can never just be one episode... ), randomly starts singing when she thinks she’s alone.

BIGGEST   PET   PEEVE  :      being lied to, being over protected, her jealousy ( she really hates feeling that emotion ), making a mistake. having someone she loves threatened or just talking badly about someone she cares for.

AMBITIONS   FOR   THE   FUTURE  :    verse dependent. but for the most part, continue to take care of the people she loves. perhaps, ( with her SO only ) start a family & be able to slow down a little to take proper care of them. 

LAYER 003 :   THOUGHTS.

FIRST   THOUGHTS   WAKING   UP  :      depends. if she wakes up from a peaceful sleep, grateful to have rested & ready to start the day. if she wakes up from a night terror, trying to forget about everything & instead dresses to train so she can get rid of the stress.

WHAT   THEY   THINK   ABOUT   MOST  :    it depends again. if she is at work, she will try to focus in on her tasks. but for the most part, she thinks about the people she cares for, such as; if they are okay, if they have enough food, money, are they safe, etc... 

WHAT   THEY   THINK   ABOUT   BEFORE   BED  :     sometimes she’s too tired to think about anything, and hopes she can just get at the very least 3 hours. Other times, whatever happened through the day, her mind replaying it in her head. 

WHAT   THEY   THINK   THEIR   BEST   QUALITY   IS  :      she believes her best quality is her quiet nature. she likes knowing others are willing to come to her & ask her to listen to their problems & perhaps help them come up with a better solution.

LAYER 004 :    WHAT’S BETTER ?

SINGLE   OR   GROUP   DATES  :     single. she prefers one on one time with her SO. its not that she does not mind group dates, but she finds that sometimes its easy to lose her voice when so many other people are around her & so, she would much rather be able to spend that quality time alone. 

TO   BE   LOVED   OR   RESPECTED  :     to be loved & respected. lets face facts, she comes from a culture where respect is earned. & even then, it is difficult for a woman to earn it. she finds herself fortunate that she has & is eager to maintain that level of respect, if not gain more of it. Plus, she goes out of her way to show kindness to someone, & she likes the fact that so many show her such affections.  

BEAUTY   OR   BRAINS  :    brains. gotta be smart to keep her interested, not going to lie. she values intelligence & likes to surround herself with people who can stand out.

LIE  :    not very often. she usually has a good reason to tell a lie & or keep a secret. she has told lies within her past & always feels guilty for doing so. however, on most occasions, she is honest with those around her.

BEEN   ON   STAGE  :      only in modern verse, where she has sung before in a crowd ( certain verses only ) & or for business purposes. to tell you the truth, she does not like it, especially since all eyes are on her which makes her feel self conscious.

NOW, for actual werewolf content

The way the pack works in Qinghe is still pretty similar to clans in canon, just slightly different

Mingjue and his direct family are the head family Of Course, and they secure this position via duels/fighting should another family want to take over; these duels are common under stressful times, but Mingjue has been able to keep it held down. 

The duels are like.....scheduled ahead of time, and are held in a secure area; the rules are that you can’t kill your opponent, that if you win you must treat the wolf who lost, + only the wolf who challenged the leader can fight, no one else (and vice versa, only the leader can fight) can join in, And More

like you cant aim for vitals, use teeth beyond taunting, fights cant be scheduled during/near full moons, and the fighters must choose whether they will both fight in humanoid form or wolf form

 Clan elders supervise the fight, and have selected specific soldiers that will help break up the fight if anything goes wrong; doctors are also on stand by bc these fights get BLOODY (esp w mingjue)

Huaisang nearly loses his position after pretty much being back-to-back challenged for his position, which instilled the rule that duels can only happen three times a year. He’s managed to win his duels with his own tricks, but they can still end pretty bloody

Ranking is not much different due to the clans wanting consistency (also im stupid and gay)

The nies end up becoming the most medically advanced due to how dangerous shifting is; they develop medications to ease pain, different magic stuff to control body temperature, etc. etc.

and actually the Nies are known for being pretty wolves

TYPICALLY a fully shifted wolf during a full moon aren’t the prettiest things to look at; most commonly their fur is patchy, their limbs are obviously distorted, faces look mutilated in a sense, all that

BUT, due to advances in cultivation & medicine they’re able to be calm after a shift, so they’re able to keep up w personal hygiene LMAO

Mingjue personally is almost obsessive with keeping his fur a certain way to be both 1. Handsome :) 2. intimidating as hell; he has the advantage of getting rlly thick hair from his Elven side, so his pelt is flush. but he also leaves some of it “messy” and puffed out for the intimidation bit

huaisang keeps his completely brushed n smooth and he’s usually nested in his bed when he shifts. he was also blessed with the fullness in his pelt, but his chest/belly and thighs are more ‘bare’ compared to mingjue.

they also braid what parts of the fur they can; mingjue and huaisang have LOTS of braids as usual

ALSO the most common pelt color is black with white/lighter pelts being on the uncommon side, second most common are dark creams/browns/reds with black snouts/heads/legs/etc. 

Mingjue has ruddy brown + black snout/legs/all that; Huaisang has brown w black ticked (i have NO idea what the dog term is for that, its like the tips of the fur is black??) 

both have bright amber/yellow eyes

ALSO THEIR TAILS...........

ok. PRIMARILY. they dont have tails in human form, BUT, it’s possible, and it’s something that puppies/young disciples will usually let show??

Mingjue ONLY shows his tail when hes in private with someone close, like Huaisang or Xichen, and he Knows they won’t be walked in on. He just has this Thing where he’ll be fucking humiliated if someone else saw it. he also has rlly long fur on his tail so its PRETTY, he just thinks its childish

Huaisang on the other hand kept his tail out until he became the sole leader of the pack, save for like, banquets he attended with Mingjue bc mingjue would tell him to Quit It.

getting rid of a tail is an hour long process so mingjue has to watch the time to get huaisang before they go anywhere

if theres no time to hide a tail, tuck it in ur pants so it doesn’t move and hide it under layers

just. a tail in humanoid form is a different context than just seeing it when they’re shifted, and again a sign of childishness.

puppy ears in human form can also happen but it’s discouraged heavily because of the possibility of damaging ear canals.

OH ALSO, another reason why like, the nie clan has that GIANT ass wall surrounding its city, is because they go on total lockdown during full moons. 

puppies are a fucking MESS to deal with, and they run like. constantly. If they’re still it’s because they’re either eating something or they’ve passed out from exhaustion. Huaisang was a TERROR when he was a puppy and mingjue still has a scar on his arm from when he went ballistic from pent-up energy

SO! There’s different parts of the city where puppies and young wolves can run around, destroy shit, eat whatever, wrestle each other, all that, and they’re HEAVILY supervised by elders/adult wolves who have better control of themselves during fullmoons

the only wolves who can leave the area during a fullmoon are Mingjue and Huaisang, and maybe like, a really well-respected elder or two, but that’s it

and despite popular belief this is actually the WORST time to attack Qinghe. Every wall is guarded, everyone is in a state where they can mutilate someone thats usually considerably stronger than them in human form, and Everyone is on high-alert whether they’re destroying a tree or nearly unconscious

theres also areas in the city sealed off for weaker/sickly wolves who are taken care of by capable adults, citizens of other species, all that

full moons aren’t hated in qinghe! they’re quite fun if you’re a werewolf; the areas for Going Ham are usually packed with different stuff u can mess with, you just have to watch ur back

they also aren’t that violent bc again, intense supervision by elders and the like; and they’re becoming more and more festival like with cultivation and medical advancement

then of course, the sword situation is still very much the same; my version of werewolves are like, slightly allergic to silver, but piercing one or having silver near won’t kill a wolf. the most it will do is give them a rash :/

all of their jewelry/accessories are made out of different metals because of this, esp since Qinghe is rich with that (+jewels/gems bc i love that hc so much)

THENNN i think last thing for now, they DO wear some form of clothing in wolf form, MOST of the time

typically there’s enough fur to cover privates, but its not unusual for there Not to be enough fur, so there’s specially made hanfu for full moons that are custom made for each wolf

basically being a seamstress in Qinghe will Get You Places, bc tears will happen, people will want them adjusted if they’re passing them to another family member, fashion choices, etc. etc.

Mingjue normally wears really simple hanfu and dachangs (the like, over-robe thing), but xichen bought him a specially made hanfu that he likes to wear during really important events, should he be in wolf form :)

huaisang buys new full moon hanfu every few months He Likes To Sit And Feel Pretty By Himself............(Or Maybe For Jiang Cheng If He Visits..........)

I think having a lot of interest is actually really cool and healthy. I find a lot of hobbies and interest I have are cyclical, they depend on the weather, on my health, on my day to day context.

And one of the things I really love about following you is that you do have so many interests and fandoms. I don’t buy into this whole “1 passion thing” to me the multitude of interests means that u are curious and that you like to learn, both of which are qualities that I think are lovely and I hope you have people around you that help you nourish this.

Anyhow now I’m curious what historical fashion. You do not rant about this enough!! 👀

awww thank you!! I do usually really like it about myself too, but it also gets frustrating when you live in a Society and are expected to pick a single thing to focus on. I’ve always been that person that just kind of took as many subjects as possible in school too, just because I couldn’t choose because I wanted to do them all. (And yes I did overwork myself immensely.)

historical fashion!!! yes!! I’m not super well versed in it yet, definitely still beginner level BUT a couple of specific things I really like/really want to know more about: 

-I’m really interested in the influence of the french revolution on western fashion. this is apparently a well known topic within the circles of historical fashion nerds, but not at all well known outside of it. Basically the french revolution was one of the first times where clothes were used to show what political side you were on, and it defined fashion - especially men’s wear - so much we’re still influenced by it today. also, you know. marie antoinette. massive influence on fashion there too. there’s a whole book on how marie antoinette’s interest in fashion influenced the french revolution. I gave it to a friend for her birthday and still need to get my hands on a copy for myself hkfhdklf

-me and an irl friend were talking about the dress history of our local area. we’re considering doing proper research and maybe writing a book, because it’s near impossible to find information on what people wore day to day, or how it developed, and even more impossible to figure out what kind of structures were worn underneath it all. did people here wear corsets? underskirts? shifts? if so what fabric? we know they wore black to church on sundays, but what was everyday fashion like, what kind of colours and patterns were worn here? we don’t know! by far most of the information on dutch traditional dress is from fishermen’s towns in the north and west of the country, and the rest of the information there is is from the big cities where they wore largely the same as what was on trend in the UK/France/Germany, except usually a few years later (depending also on social status and money). I’ve been digging around online, but my friend and I are talking about how we’re going to move this combined research of ours into offline sources too

-I also really like hanfu. blame the untamed for this one. but I love different asian traditional dress and seeing how it all influenced each other and developed further. like kimono (japan) and hanbok (korea) are very probably descendants from the chinese hanfu, and I suspect??? some other countries still have a lot of influences from other chinese dynasties. thailand is a story all of its own: their royal family purposefully steered the country away from traditional dress and encouraged western dress in a  - succesfull! - attempt at avoiding being colonized. It probably wasn’t the only thing they did, but thailand is legit pretty much the only country in the entire area that never got colonized by a western country and just wow. kudos to them for that one. 

-somewhat related to asia: chintz fabric. I have so many questions about this. it’s 2.30 am and I don’t know if I’m going to make any sense at all or if I have my facts straight BUT basically I know that chintz cotton originated in india. the dutch brought it to the japanese, who loved it. there was a whole market there, with a lot of kimono made from chintz cotton with traditional indian patterns on it. the dutch also brought it back to europe, where it was sold all over. (the british think it was theirs - it wasn’t. it was the dutch who traded in it and sold it to the brits. they did have a preference for a particular style - white background with soft patterns - but we sold it to them. the dutch preferred much bolder colors like bright red backgrounds). now the question is: I ALSO know the dutch were trying to get into a specific cotton market in indonesia too, but failed there because they used a specific kind of printing technique that made the wax layer on top kind of ‘crack’ and the indonesians hated it. on the way back though, they found out that some african cultures LOVED these fabrics, and happily bought it all from us, giving us a whole new unexpected trading market. this fabric is now known as ankara fabric, and has developed into a very recognizable and typical african pattern. what I still don’t know is if ankara fabric, the indonesian fabrics, and indian chintz, are actually related to each other too. (I would also love to tie this into discussions on cultural appropriation but it’s definitely too late at night to get into that now)

-men’s fashion & tailoring. men’s fashion often gets kind of pushed aside as boring and plain, which I get, but there are reasons for that and also it’s more interesting than you’d think. I also just love a good, well-fitting suit, and I love it when people really play with suits and use different fabrics and stuff. (yes I did drool over tang yi’s suits in trapped. beautiful boy in beautiful suits, love it. do NOT talk to me about shaofei’s green suit, that thing is an atrocity and I hate it. I can only assume tang yi gave it to him for the sole purpose of getting to rip it off him later.)

I also just like clothing in general. a lot of clothing - both historical and current - is incredibly sociopolitical and influential, and it always bugs me when people dismiss it as superficial or “I just wear what’s comfortable, I don’t care otherwise”. not to go all devil wears prada but even then you’re probably still wearing a specific style determined for you by other people. like who do you think designs those unfashionable-but-comfortable clothes you buy in discount or camping stores or wherever people go to who don’t care. those clothes also have thought and research put into them, and they also follow trends and new developments. there’s no escaping the Fashion, you might as well lean into it and have fun with it, you know?

I will also very often comment on kpop outfits lmao. I have major beef with stray kids’ stylists, and also lately with some of bts’ stylists. seventeen, however, often does really great. 

anyway I hope some of this made some sense! I’m very tired. I should be in bed. but thanks for letting me rant about clothes for a bit!
