Jack and Ianto and the coat thing.

I adore the progression of this. From season one, where he's handing Jack his coat or carrying in on his behalf, to season two, where he's the one dressing him. There's an intimacy to it, a familiarity. Using his hands to turn Jack into the Captain. Stepping into a role and ingraining himself in the fantasy.

It also evolves throughout season two. The slight struggle as Jack turns into it in Reset, the fluidity with which Ianto settles it against his shoulders in Stolen Earth.

The coat is such an important part of Jack’s identity, of the standards he has set for himself. It speaks volumes that he’s embraced Ianto into the ritual, into the upkeep of the image.

In all the years that I have been in this fandom (which is a lot, like I’ve rewatched Torchwood and different DW arcs consistently for at least a decade)…

i dont think any show is ever gonna give me what torchwood gave me with gwen & jack. once in a lifetime experience. no one will ever come close. Thee insane besties of all time. they never resolved any of their issues. they would kill each other. they have tried to die for each other. they made each other worse. and better. do you guys remember that time gwen brought him back to life with a kiss because i do. everything is about them, actually.

holy blocking batman. on the nose? sure. a shot that seems to have been composed specifically so a dropout former film student like me can exclaim ‘wow this is cinematic’ and probably talk circles about the symbolism… jack with his back turned to the camera, a statuesque silhouette towering over the cowering gwen — on her knees before something of a an idol, a demigod, an impossible hero, some christ figure risen from the dead but at the cost of the corpse lying prostrate like a sacrifice beside him. somebody to take her by the hand and lead her to a transfigured world in which nothing will ever be the same.

torchwood is one of those series that's so stupid but it will change your life in a fundamental way forever and you'll never be the same again but yeah also it's abt gay sex with aliens

Jack is seen as Mr Commitment Issues and in many ways he perpetuates that himself because it keeps people at arm's length and masks how much he cares *and* in other ways he is genuinely afraid of real commitment because of how life is a string of devastating losses for him.

But at the same time, this man does not believe in monogamy. (In Day 1 for example when Gwen is making out with the sex alien and the crew points out that she has a bf, his reaction is 'you people and your quaint little categories'; and we know what one meaningful relationship he had with John Hart on his own terms was like. Monogamy as the default mode of relationship is a social construct and a restrictive one at that -- there is nothing *wrong* with his stance.)

And yet, Ianto very much so does. And it's wild to me how easily and thoroughly Jack accommodates that. In a show that doesn't shy away from cheating he never does. Sure he flirts with everyone but every time Ianto gets jealous he is quick to reassure him it doesn't mean anything. And while he and Ianto are together, even as they don't even have a good definition for what they are, we never see Jack sleeping with someone else. And I don't know what that is if not commitment--even if I'm not sure Ianto recognises it for what it is.

Ok ok ok...

It's been almost 18 years since it aired, but who cares I'm talking about it anyway.

I've seen a lot of people hating on Cyberwoman. And yeah, I understand why. That costume choice was, er, quite something. But it's still my favourite episode and yk why? The build up. The plotline. And most of all the acting. Oh my god the acting. My favourite scene has got to be the tourist office, because oh my days have you seen the way Gareth David Lloyd plays Ianto? It gives me chills. After watching it, I rewatched Everything Changes and Ghost Machine because I never actually noticed Ianto in them, unless he's speaking. The only time you ever see him is when he intentionally draws attention to himself, which he rarely does. I watched them again, specifically focusing on Ianto. He's barely in them. He's one of the main 5 characters, but in the first three episodes he has one of the most minor roles. Like, you see him let Gwen into the Hub, delete the stuff she typed to make herself remember and see him introduced. That's it for episode one. And yes, everyone has a minor role in that, but you never actually see him as part of the team. He works alone, always.

Episode three really highlights that for me. He appears every so often with a funny comment. He has less screen time than Rhys. If it wasn't for the fact that I was actively thinking about him, I would have completely forgotten that he was there. One of his rare appearances really got to me - the ending. Jack gives him the ghost machine to put in the secure archives. That's normal, the archives are his area.

Except Jack doesn't even look at him. He just holds it out, like Ianto is a servant, not someone with years of experience dealing with aliens. Ianto worked at Torchwood One. He was the most qualified of anyone on that team when each of them joined. Owen was medically trained, but no experience with aliens. Tosh was a genius, but she had only experienced aliens through wrong blueprints of their technology, plus a charge of treason. Gwen had police training, nothing more. She got a job by being stubborn, and in the right place at the right time. Jack was reckless, dangerous, and did not want to join Torchwood. He only did it because he needed to do something in the 100+ years that he would be waiting for the Doctor.

Ianto had everything taken from him all at once, and nobody bothered to check on him. He looked fine, so they didn't give it any more thought. They of all people should know that that's not how it works. Ianto was repressing his grief, exhausting himself with the amount he worked both at his job and caring for Lisa. He never had any desire to cause anyone any harm. He was blinded by overwhelming grief. When humans experience loss, the automatic reaction is to cling to what you have. For most people, that means reaching out to friends and family, creating a support system. Ianto lost all his friends, all at once. We don't hear about his family until S3 (goddamn S3), but it's implied that they aren't close. I haven't listened to any of the audios, so if there's more to it than that then I don't know it.

Ianto had nothing, except an echo pretending to be Lisa. He did the most natural thing in the world, clung to what he had. Or at least, what he thought he had. Don't blame Ianto for the events of Cyberwoman. His actions correlate with normal reactions to grief. Yes, his actions were extreme. But so was his grief.

ianto jones is the most character of all time. he says he's not into men while literally having a boyfriend. he gets frustrated at being the one who always has to look after everyone else but is offended by the suggestion of someone else making the coffee. he will have kinky stopwatch sex and play naked hide-and-seek but draws the line at jack's office fetish. he knows his boyfriend can't die but pulls the 'i'm not leaving you!' card anyway. he screams at jack and calls him worse than any monster they've faced then falls in love with him. he refuses to give up on his cyber girlfriend even AFTER she turns into a killing machine. he had a goth phase where he was really into finnish heavy metal (which slaps by the way). he will shoot his teammates without hesitation if it's necessary. he exists in constant pain but still manages to care about saving the world. he makes sure to put on safety equipment when driving a forklift to save his team in a time crunch. he's convinced he's nothing more than a blip in time and won't matter at all in the long run for jack but he loves him anyway and stays with him because it matters to HIM. looking at the show from outside you'd think he was the soft sweet coffee boy but no he is combatative by nature. he lives to contradict and he is more of a fighter than even jack harkness. thank you for coming to my ted talk.
