here are my spotify playlists i think some of you would like
✭ underrated sixties - oh you know your beatles and your rolling stones and your beach boys, but how about something a little different?
✭ dancing with nigel in my living room while listening to our record player, 1979 - we'll bitch about what's on top of the pops but we still watch it and enjoy the music. when it's finished, we then grab out the record player and dance the night away, praying not to wake my parents.
✭ painting a jackson pollock no. 5 with squire - it’s the middle of the afternoon. the sun is trying so hard to peek through the english clouds. me and john are in our garden, soaking up the sun as i'm laying on the grass while he tries to finish his painting. i peer over at his work and say “it looks like a jackson pollock no. 5…"
✭ shopping in carnaby street with mr shampoo - for those time me and brian went on a shopping spree in carnaby and king's st., spending our entire paycheck on velvet, silk and satin…
✭ sunshine music - a very underrated genre. just pure happiness. what's not to love?
✭ songs from tumblr dot com - songs that you'd find rb'ed on bbbrianjones.tumblr.com <3
distant memory - songs that remind me that someday i will only be a memory in someone's mind and they might ask themselves "i wonder what emmi's doing?"

Endless Ocean - Remembering Dennis Wilson and "Pacific Ocean Blue" (1977)
"When my record was finished, Brian was the first to hear it. In the middle of some tracks he'd say, "I can't stand this" and walk out of the room. Sometimes he'd laugh. Sometimes he'd cry. I guess he was thinking that he'd seen me grow up as a musician." - Dennis Wilson, 1977
This coming December will see the 40th anniversary of the death of Dennis Wilson in 1983- the first loss in the Beach Boys and the culmination of an intense, fast-paced life filled with extreme parental abuse, commercial highs and lows with the band, and heavy trauma from events of the late 60s- oftentimes using copious amounts of drugs & alcohol to cope in the last years of his increasingly troubled life. But even in darkest times, Dennis also refused to slow down for his music, and his passion for it either- and that fact should not be forgotten while discussing his life.
Famously the only surfer in the band, as well as its drummer- Dennis was the bad boy of the group- charismatic & popular with fans, and living a true rocker style; hardly anyone thought of him as a talented songwriter, though. But he- not brother Brian, would be the first member to officially release a solo album, itself a culmination of his songwriting history that started in Beach Boys albums like Friends and the wonderful Sunflower. This work is 1977's Pacific Ocean Blue- which he largely wrote and produced with longtime songwriting partner Gregg Jakobson, and is the only album he released in his lifetime.
At this time, Dennis' rough lifestyle had begun to affect him- his voice had become much more raspy and rough, almost leading us to believe he was tough as nails from life & experience and moving away from the tender songwriting from the past. But with Pacific Ocean Blue, we witness Dennis at his most open, most brutally honest and at his most sensitive and heartfelt too- pouring out his soul and never modifying his expression to make his big debut more pop or radio-friendly like most labels wanted him & The Beach Boys to be- what's here is him at most genuine, uncompromised in every way.
Dennis' rough voice complimented the songs and subjects of the album well and makes his earnest feelings that much more believable, and with the very welcome inclusion of the Double Rock Baptist Choir- the backing vocals moved away from the expected Beach Boys vocal style (though members like brother Carl and Mike Love would appear here too)- but bacame more soulful and yearning to match the moods of the songs. For their part- the song's lyrics are simple yet visibly honest, not bogged down with complex lyricism, but plainspoken to be much more direct with the listener, helping to elevate the music instead of distracting from it.
With all of this in mind (and considering Dennis' own musical style) overt emotion and mood triumphs over all- he had been depressed by his break-up with his wife Karen Lamm-Wilson, finally charted out his own musical path away from the Beach Boys as the band was practically hanging by a thread, and was utterly dismayed by environmental destruction and degradation in California- as seen in the terrific, thundering opener "River Song". Thanks to the (severely underrated) talent of Dennis and Gregg's production work, the whole album is surrounded by a full and intricate wall of sound and emotion- and as a result, the album has a atmospheric sadness to it that pervades it all, but it also shines and expresses itself in many different ways. If the Beach Boys famously signified a sunny day on the beach- Dennis' work was the thick June Gloom that blanketed the whole ocean.
But that didn't mean that all of the songs on the album were grim- Dennis shows appreciation for life, love, and music in a way only he could, like in the heavenly-sounding and mandolin-filled track "Rainbows" and the somber-yet-greatful tone of "Farewell My Friend". The theme of loss in the latter song hits harder in hindsight- while Dennis had been working on a new album (work-titled 'Bambu') his indulgence in excess worsened to the point where his body and mind deteriorated rapidly and never recovered. He would drown in Marina del Rey in California- He was only 39. He was cremated and his ashes would be scattered over the Pacific Ocean.
But while many are quick to bring up Dennis' rough life & end and (almost solely) paint him as a tragic figure to set the mood for his obituary- it does a great disservice to his memory & the sheer joy writing music for others gave him (as he would state multiple times in interviews). And after being out of print for so long, Pacific Ocean Blue was finally re-released in 2008 and soon became wildly acclaimed by critics and fans, keeping his music alive for generations to come as much of his other unreleased work with the Beach Boys finally gets released officially to this very day- and what we can finally hear is gorgeous.

The Sheridan Tapes bonus episodes:
I forgot so many of these lol, really like the format of Amy taking us on a tour of possible universes and futures.
Deleted scenes - Moments from Meriwether - the voices over the intercom are hard to understand but honestly fun to listen to for the vibes. Would love to be able to concentrate on the cosmic conversation Oroborous had with Caldwell but the concept went way over my half shut down brain.
Interlude 01 - the silver age - oh wow Paul the superhero... Kinda devastating that that could have been him but in the canon timeline he was revenge fueled without any other life or purpose... Poor guy. Wonder who was the controller
Interlude 02 - worlds apart - omg the Llewelyn and Utkin story, I loved that arc! Hilariously up until now I truly remembered being a whole different podcast, somehow did not remember it from the Sheridan Tapes lol. I love the concept of two people in the north and south poles, being only able to communicate with each other, not knowing of the chaos the world has plunged into around them.
Interlude 03 - music of the spheres - oh god Adam 😭😭😭. What a tragic conversation with the jovian that sure hurt. Good thing the crew will save the world and stranding Adam alone in space with a gene bank to fend off all of the aliens and the darkness chasing after him from earth won't happen, right? Right?
Interlude 04 - worlds after - part two of worlds apart, the best post apocalyptic worlds are the frozen ones. Love utkin being asexual and talking about it. Hope he manages to save humanity along with Llewelyn doing her own thing.
B-side 09 - oblivion - oh god what a horrible bit. Who was the person struck in the wall... poor Connor you should've stayed away from ISPHA 😭
B-side 10 - air - Adrian my radio boy! Again, I completely forgot about this episode lol. I absolutely love Amy's manic energy in all these. The 2 first dear Amy's contradicting each other with the whole you're connected to everyone you've ever known and yet you're always and forever alone. Then the third story about Adrian, did not remember that he decided on his own to come to Oslow to search for the ranger and then got trapped there, truly a bad luck Brian lol
B-side 11 - paradise - Bill and Rob having a beach episode in the source, what adventures will they have! Hehe their conversation about Bill possibly being into Ned was cute, now I have a vivid image of both Rob and Ned wearing these hates and Bill just becoming completely flustered.
B-side 12 - anathema - what a great short tale, amazing trans themes in it too, into Anna's short story collection it goes <3

Chapter 27 - Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight (when it’s exactly twelve o’clock that night) [part 6]
Birds Of a Feather
Look who Monty the cat dragged in! Hope you guys are fine and are gonna enjoy this, let us know what you think about it ✨
(In the previous chapter: despite their mutual attraction, Layla and Eddie decided to spend some time together in a platonic way; Stone wasn’t able to make Sara come out from the bathroom but has instead confessed her his feelings; Jeff has seen his bandmate go inside the bathroom and he knows Stone is with Sara, but what he doesn’t know is that the two of them are making out)
Seattle, 31st December 1984
“Here you are! Thought you had deserted us” Sara snapped out of her thoughts when she heard Jeff’s voice coming from behind: she turned around as he was already strolling in her direction, and she immediately felt her mouth dry. “I’m sorry, I-I came here to get some fresh air – I thought I was about to faint inside” the girl stammered, pointing at the room where It’s My Life was playing out loud “The balcony seemed like a clever idea” “It was, just like me bringing you some fruit punch” Jeff grinned, handing her a red cup that she gladly took. “You’re a lifesaver, thank you” “No problem” he went to sit on the railing, next to where now Sara was chewing the edge of her paper cup “Penny for your thoughts?” “Just a silly recollection…” the tips of her ears instantly reddened “You’d make fun of me” “I would never! I won’t, I promise” “Well, I was thinking about last New Year’s Eve, wondering how I spent it” “And…?” “... and I just realized it was probably me still crying because Dennis Wilson had died a couple of days before” she rested her elbows on the railing, then leaned her cheek on a hand “You know, Beach Boys’ drummer? And a year later I’m at a party, but I fled to the balcony because inside there’s too many people I don’t know… so yeah, a year may have passed but I’m still socially awkward, ugh” “Hey, I wouldn’t call ‘socially awkward’ someone who’s having zero problems chatting with a guy she’s known for seven months” “What, you’ve been counting or something?” she smirked at him, her voice showing amusement at his corniness. “Every single day” “Oh, shush” the girl immediately flushed, and Jeff couldn’t help but grin triumphantly because she was trying so hard not to smile but the half dimple on the right corner of her mouth said otherwise. “No, but seriously – you’re doing great” he was quick to make himself clear “I mean, you said it yourself: going to a party full of people you don’t know, with other people you barely know? In my book you sound like a total badass” “You think so?” “I do” he looked her in the eye “But that doesn’t mean that last year you were an utter loser because you spent New Year’s Eve crying over some dead musician… sounds like he meant a great deal to you”   “He does, yeah” “I know my Brian Wilson and my Mike Love,” he began, while she frowned at the last person mentioned “but the other members… not so much, I’m afraid – except for the drummer’s association with Manson, obviously” “Yeah, I guess that’s public domain” Sara wrinkled her nose “Well, Dennis was the first one in the band to come out with a solo project, which I think has to be one of the saddest albums ever… still beautiful, though I haven’t been able to listen again to it after last year” “Understandable” “And he also made a movie with James Taylor that I have yet to watch but my father tells me it’s great – kind of a road-movie, made in the early ‘70s” “Sounds like something I’d like” “I think so too; he also wrote some pretty cool songs for the band, but he was obviously overshadowed by his brother” she sighed “Anyway, it’s all over now so I guess it doesn’t matter anymore” “It matters to you, that’s what’s important” She adjusted her scarf, avoiding his glance, then abruptly changed topic: “I listened to your tape” The bassist almost lost his balance but was able to recover at the last second: “Yeah? Verdict?” “You should seriously start to listen to some good ol’ folk, you can’t live just with punk music” “... that’s your feedback?!” this time he had begun to fall backwards, so he wisely jumped off the railing. “Yeah, that’s it” “Uhm, I-I guess I can see your point, but I also put Bowie and Beth by KISS! C’mon, you can’t tell me they’re punk, that’s-” “Honestly? That’s the sweetest thing somebody has ever done for me – and my dad is a worthy opponent in this competition, but you beat him anyway” the girl winked at him “You could have made a Barry Manilow compilation and I would have appreciated it all the same, because in any case it would have been something you made thinking of me” “Woah, I-uhm… thank you? I mean-” “Anyway, I need to lend you some tapes that I think are fundamental in the education of a person – especially for a musician like yourself” Sara kept on talking, then noticed he was giving her a funny look “What, what did I say?” “Nothing, just… I’m happy you liked it, I was hoping the tape could make you understand what you mean to me” Even though her feet were on the ground, the girl was still able to trip over an invisible obstacle. “Errrrr, thank God I didn’t drink the vodka they offered us before, otherw-” she babbled, but was interrupted by Jeff moving closer. “... Wanna go out with me?” “Like, right now? We shouldn’t ditch the others, it wouldn’t be f-” “No, silly!” the guy chuckled, the wrinkles around the corners of his eyes instantly giving her butterflies in her stomach “I agree with you, right now it would be really improper: wanna do this next week?” “You’re… serious” “Why shouldn’t I be? We can go to the movies and then grab something to eat” “Just the two of us?” “Unless you want that pain in the ass of Stone to tag along” he joked, trying to ignore the annoying thought of his friend being the third wheel. No words came out Sara’s mouth, so the guy panicked. “... you know what, I didn’t want to mess this up – just forget it” he dismissed the previous idea with frantic gestures of his hands “I’m sorry I embarrassed you, I-” “I’d love to” the girl had come closer and taken his hands in hers “I’m sorry if I made you believe I didn’t wanna go out with you, I just… I’m surprised you invited me, that’s all” “Hell, to be honest I’m surprised you accepted” Jeff let out a nervous chuckle, squeezing her hands in return “You sure? Just the two of us?” “Just the two of us” she said in a resolute tone, grinning at him, and he finally mirrored her relaxed smile. 1985 was about to start in the best possible way.

Seattle, VedderAment’s place, 31st December 1990 (but not for much longer) “It’s barely a couple of minutes to midnight!” Layla yelled into Eddie’s ear as they held to each other and swayed to the music. <Excuse me, Miss Boulais, is it midnight? I’d check my watch, you know, but I just can’t take my eyes off you… JEEZ, I DIDN’T SAY IT OUT LOUD, DID I?> Eddie had a mind full of cheesy kissing pick up lines as it often happened when he was drunk or stoned. “Really? Uhm we’re almost there then hehe” he awkwardly replied as he couldn’t say if he was more inebriated by the booze, the song’s atmosphere, Layla’s delicate flowery perfume, the warmth of her breath against his face or her body pressed against his. “Yep!” Layla knew she should have said something earlier because now, right in the middle of the party, it was impossible to have a proper conversation about anything or even say anything more than best wishes. She tried to tell herself to enjoy the moment, which wasn’t bad at all, but she couldn’t help but regret her lack of courage. She was an overly worried type of drunk. <I’m here, slow dancing with a nice guy, who also happens to be very hot, and instead of just enjoying it, I keep on brooding over what I did and didn’t do...> 10! 9! 8! They kept dancing without saying a word, until Chris started shouting the countdown and everyone at the party followed him. Eddie and Layla stopped but were still holding each other as they were howling every number too. 7! 6! 5! <Wanna start the new year with a bang?> he couldn’t help thinking as they smiled at each other during the count. 4! 3! <Ok, that’s enough, I’m done! I’ll kiss him! Just like that. But what if he doesn’t want to? What if he pulls away? How can I save the situation? I could kiss him and make it seem like it was a mistake. Like I could be aiming at the cheek and then oops! And then just see where it goes from there… If he gets into it, that’s great, but if he doesn’t I can always say “sorry” and laugh about it and pretend nothing happened then go cry about it in my room later> Layla’s train of thoughts was very fast in those two seconds, as she pondered about her kissing attempt. 2! 1! <Can I be your first mistake of the year?> Eddie was disgusted but also surprised by his own creativity for pick-up lines as the last seconds of 1990 were ticking away. HAPPY FUCKIN’ NEW YEAR!!!!! Cornell screamed from the top of his lungs as chaos started around in the apartment at the stroke of midnight, so much that the music was barely audible, although Chris had turned back up at maximum volume. “Happy new year, Eddie!” Layla jumped and cheered and went to kiss him on the cheek. Right, on the cheek. Her previous determination gone out of the window, as always. Eddie kissed her cheek in turn and stood staring at her with a drunk smile, considering telling her that, talking about new year’s resolutions, he had a new one now and he was looking at it right at that moment. “Thanks, happy new year to you too” he said instead, keeping some dignity. <Why can’t I be uninhibited drunk instead of overthinking drunk?> Layla sighed internally as she took in Eddie’s disheveled beauty right in front of her and regretted their loser-style new year’s kisses. “1991 will be great for you and the band, I just know that!” the girl shook him by his shoulders and it was like he snapped up from sleep. “I trust you. You know, talking about resolutions…” Eddie started saying and it was like he could hear himself talking but couldn’t do anything to prevent it and was terrified of all the stupid shit that could come out of his mouth. “Yeah?” she asked as Eddie wouldn’t go on but just started dancing with her instead. “Uh, I have a new one. I didn’t mention it before because, well, it’s new” he said after Layla’s encouragement and was already saying a silent goodbye to his dignity. <I just hope she had enough alcohol to believe I’m charming and cool> “Ok, that’s great” “Yeah” he said as he kept swaying in time with the music. “And what is it?” she prompted him to talk as she thought the booze was probably starting to kick in and have the best of him. “Not be a loser anymore” he spoke into her ear as he stopped moving and subtly tightened his hold on the girl’s hips. “Oh. Well, that’s, that’s good” “Pucker up now, please” he looked up into her eyes and she saw an extremely serious expression on his face. “Wha-” Layla didn’t have time to understand what Eddie was talking about before his lips met hers in a sudden kiss. Layla wanted so badly to let her mind wander and mull over what was happening and the possible aftermath and consequences of it but she just couldn’t. The kiss was so surprising she was caught off guard and it was just that deep type of kiss that leaves little room for thought. The rush of sensations crawling across her body was the only thing she could focus on, together with the taste of him. Eddie pulled away only to look at her face, searching for reassurance, any hint or reaction that could tell him whether he had just fucked up big time or she liked being kissed. He had his answer in a couple of seconds, when the silent double stare broke into a mirrored dumbstruck smile. “... Fuck it” Layla said and he thought that it was serious if she used the F word. He managed to smirk before the girl decided that whatever it meant, whatever the consequences might be, whatever his lips were bringing, she wanted more and pulled him into a new kiss. They were lost in each other’s lips and it was like the outside world had ceased to exist. That was until a loud crash that sounded like an explosion broke the air and their kiss and brought them back to reality.

“Jesus H. Tap-dancing Christ, what the hell was that noise?!” Sara startled, then finally realized what had been happening for God knows how much time and immediately pushed herself away from Stone. “Sounded kinda like the roar you hear during an earthquake...” he casually observed with a smirk, touching his lips without taking his eyes off her. “Oh, that’s magnificent… fuckin’ A, we’ll be the first ones to drop like ants!” she growled, then kicked him in the leg “What the fuck are you waiting for?? Stand up, I need to go out!” “After all the trouble I went to come here? Over my dead body, missy” “You’re asking for it” she kicked him again “I’ve got zero problems with killing you to save myself: you’ll be just a fatality caused by the earthquake” “Only if you’re gonna cry at my funeral – first row, with a Hepburn LBD and this exact perfume” he went on, grabbing her ankle and trying to pull her close. “... you’re a sick motherfucker, you know that?” Sara shook him off, pushed him aside while he was guffawing and finally reached the handle “I’m not done with you” “That’s exactly what I was hoping you would say, Scout” “Go eat a dick, Boo Radley” she gave him a last fake smile then stormed out the bathroom with her ears and cheeks boiling. <Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick, let’s hope nobody noticed my absence… that son of a gun needs a good kicking> The girl stopped for a few seconds, trying to catch her breath and wondering if her lipstick had survived the havoc that Gossard had bestowed upon it, then craned her neck to see if anybody had seen what she had been up to, to no avail: the hall was empty, because apparently everybody had gathered in the living room. “Ames, I already told ya I’m fuckin’ sor-” “What the fuck should I do with your apologies, Chris?? Wipe my ass, that’s what I’m gonna do!” Jeff was shouting at his (ex) friend “What am I supposed to tell the landlord?? ‘My friend thought that shooting a goddamn confetti cannon against the ceiling would be a brilliant idea’?! That would surely make everything easy for me, yes sirree!” <Do not think about that idiot’s ass, Fancini, and focus on the main news: no earthquake and Mr. Montana’s imminent ass-kicking provided by his landlor-fuck, I thought about his ass, didn’t I?> Sara looked up, first of all trying to figure out how much did Chris actually fuck up and also to take her mind off the bassist’s butt. She noticed quite a large hole in the ceiling and a few confetti remains hanging from it. “You can always say it’s installation art” Steve suggested as Lukin on his side couldn’t seem to take off his squinting eyes from the confetti cannon disaster. “Yeah, it surely… uhm, transformed the perception of the space” Layla remarked, as Sara briefly looked at her friend and couldn’t help but notice Eddie’s arm looped around her waist – she didn’t think too much of it. “Sure! And it will transform the landlord’s perception too as he won’t hesitate invading our personal space to kick our asses!” Jeff flailed his arms around in frustration, while Sara silently cursed him for mentioning his cute ass once again. “Come on, it’s not bad! I mean, it is bad, but not that much. Nothing that can’t be repaired” Matt pointed out, trying to save his bandmate from the homicidal instincts of Ament. “Sure it can be repaired. At our expenses, of course” Jeff rubbed his face with his hands, trying to stay calm, but the people around him didn’t help. “Oh! You could ask the construction company that’s fixing our apartment! They’re not too expensive” Layla thought this would cheer the guy up a little but apparently she was wrong. “Well, thanks a lot, Four Eyes! They’re cheap and all but considering how quick they’re working at your place, do you think they’ll have the fuckin’ hole fixed on time for the next New Year’s party?” “Come on, Jeff, let’s not ruin the party now” Vedder exchanged a reassuring look with Layla and went to lighten up his bandmate’s mood. “Me? It wasn’t me, Chris ruined it” Ament shrugged and Cornell rolled his eyes for the umpteenth time. “How many times do I have to apologize to you?” “Listen, we’ll think about something tomorrow, I’ll try and see if I can do something. Tomorrow, though. Today we’re celebrating, ok?” Eddie went on and his attempt at keeping his friend calm wasn’t totally uninterested. <The sooner Jeff relaxes, the sooner we’ll all go back to the party and the sooner I’ll go back to the smooching> he thought, hoping he was really just thinking and not saying the word smooch aloud. “How sweet of him, improvising as a mason… I bet he’d pass himself off as a firefighter or a fuckin’ astronaut just to resume his favourite activity” Turner murmured under his breath, still bearing a sort of grudge against him because of Layla. “Hey, what’s happening he-OH. Jeffrey, how many times did I tell you not to do jumping jacks at home? You know you’re not exactly as light as a feather” Stone appeared out of nowhere and Sara had almost forgotten their escapade and was chuckling at his joke – at least until she turned to look at him and noticed a faint trace of her lipstick in the corner of his bottom lip. “HAHAHAHA OH, SHUT UP GOSSARD, GIVE HIM A BREAK!” the girl laughed exaggeratedly and shoved her hand upon Stone’s mouth as to playfully shush him up, but actually to subtly remove any evidence. <A flamethrower would be more effective but this will do for now> she thought as she felt a sort of satisfaction in almost suffocating the guy. Stone didn’t lose his composure and with a quick move he took her wrist, twisted it lightly, kissed her hand and smirked. “As you wish, Miss! How can I say no to such a gentle request?” Everybody turned to look at them with their faces scrunched up like crumpled paper; the color drained immediately from Sara’s face when she realized that all her previous caution had just been destroyed by the cocky attitude of her ex-friend. Silence was reigning until Ament cleared his throat: “Ok ok, considering everybody’s at least as wasted as Stone, we clearly can’t do anything now anyway” he paused and looked at Stone and Sara with a weird feeling gnawing at him that he couldn’t put a name on “You’re right, Ed, we’ll think about it tomorrow” “... Confetti hole” Lukin said out of the blue, while Chris turned the music back up and everyone went back to their own business. “Yeah, 1991 started with a bang” Steve snorted. “It looks like the sun” his friend said seriously. “Midnight sun” “Confetti sun, like it looks like the sun but it’s fake” “Uh-uh” “Confetti hole sun. Wouldn’t it be a great song title?” Lukin’s face suddenly lit up like a Christmas tree. “Yeah yeah, sure. Come on, let’s go have a drink” Steve shook his head and led his bandmate to the kitchen as the party slowly started again.

May I ask you some beach boys opinions? What are your thoughts on the Love You album? Do you like much of their music post Pet Sounds/Smile? Is there a version of Smile that you listen to? What are your favorite songs/albums pre Pet Sounds? Would you go to see Brian in concert these days?
I know people have a lot of strong opinions on a lot of this but I am not deep in the trenches of Beach Boys fan discussion lol. Here are my more-than-casual fan opinions:
i know people consider Love You to be one of the better albums from those years but I feel like a lot of it just reminds me of songs from their early albums with a lot less charm. It's cute and fun when guys in their late teens and early 20s are singing about rollerskating and a bunch of women but not so much when they're that old...
I think a lot of their music post-Smile loses a lot of it's charm. I like some stuff off of Sunflower and Surf's Up but a lot of their albums around this time I think gets weighed down by the effort to find a new sound. Albums like Holland have songs I like but it always feels like they're trying too hard. Other albums are just trying to sound like earlier albums imo.
I usually listen to the Smile sessions version from 2011!!
favorite songs pre-Pet Sounds: Please let me wonder, dont worry baby, when i grow up to be a man, amusement parks USA, others i cant think of
I saw Brian Wilson over this past summer actually 😭 it's definitely something you go to just to say you saw a legend more than anything else... It's very sad to see at times though, I hope he's happy and well!

The Ocean Is Musical Sound
Ah, the sea! It's a source of endless inspiration for songwriters. Whether you're looking for something upbeat and cheerful or something more reflective and peaceful, we've rounded up a selection of some of the most popular songs about the sea. From classic folk tunes to contemporary hits, there's sure to be something here to set your soul sailing.
Weezer – “Across The Sea”
Weezer’s 1996 song “Across The Sea” is one of the most beloved songs by longtime Weezer fans. Written by Rivers Cuomo, the song tells the story of an eighteen-year-old Japanese girl who heard Weezer on the radio and wrote a letter to them. With its dreamy guitar riffs and poetic lyrics, it’s easy to see why this song resonates so deeply with its listeners. The lyrics “I could never touch you, I think it would be wrong” evoke a sense of longing for something that can never be, much like the sea itself.

Their magical musical number, “Under the Sea”, follows mermaid Ariel’s dream of the life above compared to life underwater. “Les Berceaux” by Gabriel Faure Song Year: 1879 Gabriel Faure wrote “Les Berceaux” as a cradle song, using a waltz rhythm to evoke the lilt and rock of a cradle and the ebbing tide. The lyrics compare the rocking of ships at port to the cradles women rock on the shore. “Farewell to Carlingford” by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Mackem Song Year: 1968 Tommy Mackem wrote “Farewell to Carlingford” as a tribute to his beloved Northern Irish town. It tells the story of a young man who loves the sea more than Mary Doyle, the woman he wishes to follow. “Across the Sea” by Weezer  Song Year: 1996 Weezer’s “Across the Sea” tells the story of a person receiving a letter from a foreign correspondent that they can’t help but answer. The heartfelt lyrics capture the bittersweet feeling of parting from a loved one and are beautifully complemented by the folky guitar melodies. “Big Ship” by Phil Collins Song Year: 1981 Phil Collins’ 1981 track “Big Ship” is an uplifting tribute to hope in the face of adversity. My Top 125 songs of 1973
12/31/23: Greetings! This is my last annual top songs list, the Top 125 songs of 1973, as I will be retiring the blog when I turn 50 in seventeen days. It's been an awesome journey all-around, but lets stick with '73 on this post. Only one song asterisked this year as a new-to-me song. All of these songs rate 82 out of 100 or higher (see previous post somewhere that describes my rating system). One of the themes I've been discussing over the year is decline, that is the decline in quality of mainstream artists' material--sometimes this is just slightly less, and other times it is a major decline. Probably the worst offender is Deep Purple, who released a huge stinker of a record following arguably their best effort; Yes also is in this category with their four-side ugly behemoth. Then there are just slightly inferior records like Houses of the Holy, Quadrophenia, and Goats Head Soup. That said, there are several artists that released excellent records like Pink Floyd, EL&P, Elton John, Neil Young, Blue Oyster Cult, Paul McCartney (Wings), Genesis, Steely Dan, Roxy Music (x2!), Caravan, Stevie Wonder, Black Sabbath, Mott the Hoople, the Stooges, and, of course, Gentle Giant. Finally, 1973 would feature many newbies including Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, and Billy Joel. One may ask 'where are all the women?'… yes, it's a travesty, I know. Thankfully this would get much better over time. But for now, here's my top 125 of the year that was 1973:
10CC 'Rubber Bullets'…like Steely Dan and Sparks, some good old SmArt Rock here… great story song too about a jail riot
Abba 'Ring Ring'…too bad we can't get more into Abba on this blog, but at least you get a taste here
Aerosmith 'Dream On'… song wasn't a hit until a couple years later… probably the one Aerosmith song EVERYONE knows (even my teenage sons)
Aerosmith 'Movin' Out'… as sinister as B.O.C. but they mean it!
Aerosmith 'Somebody'… now there's a dirty-ass opening riff
Alice Cooper 'Unfinished Sweet'… I dig the James Bond shit in the middle; they shoulda used his song for The Man With the Golden Gun
Brian Auger 'Happiness Is Just Around the Bend'… in all the darkness of this year, a more friendly tune
Roy Ayers 'Coffy Is the Color'… blaxploitation fare at its best
Bachman-Turner Overdrive 'Let It Ride'… I like the frequent mood changes in this essential Classic Rock tune
The Beach Boys 'Sail on Sailor'… the last Beach Boys song that we can take as serious art? maybe… but what about 'Kokomo'?
Black Sabbath 'A National Acrobat'… Iommi just tears it UP on this song, probably my favorite Sabbath song ever
Black Sabbath 'Killing Yourself to Live'… an anti-drug song, how ironic
Black Sabbath 'Sabbra Cadabra'… quintessential Sabbath riff and fast-paced melody
Blue Ash 'Abracadabra (Have You Seen Her?)'… Power Pop strikes again--if any interest in this genre, the album is a must-listen
Blue Ash 'Wasting My Time'… doing their Beatles impression, much respect
Blue Oyster Cult '7 Screaming Diz-Busters'… don't know what it means, don't care… the slow-down in the middle is too cool
Blue Oyster Cult 'Baby Ice Dog'… owoooooooo!!!
Blue Oyster Cult 'Hot Rails to Hell'… feels like it says it is
Blue Oyster Cult 'The Red & the Black', 'O.D.'d on Life Itself'… I usually combine these two songs as they flow into each other nicely… great way to open BOC's arguably best record
David Bowie 'The Jean Genie'… classic Bowie blues rock stomp
Tim Buckley 'Stone In Love'… a pretty good place to start with Tim Buckley, but don't expect the rest of his material to be this accessible
Budgie 'Breadfan'… Metallica's cover is great, almost as great as the original by this underrated power trio
Buffalo 'Sunrise (Come My Way)'… the only new song on this list that I didn't know before… it's pretty epic*
Captain Beyond 'Evil Men'… a little bit Sabbath, little bit BOC
Caravan 'C'Thlu C'Thlu'… one of my favorite songs ever, they get the marching of the beast during the bridge just right
Caravan 'Hoedown'… funny, EL&P had their own 'Hoedown' in '72, but a completely different song… not sure which is better, as both are fun little prog workouts
Caravan 'Memory Lain, Hugh Headloss'… this tune sounds like it could be the soundtrack of an epic journey, or maybe a lavish game show
Chicago 'Feelin' Stronger Every Day'… talk about a mood-booster, seriously… the song is an anti-depressant… the band's A.M. apex
Chicago 'Just You 'n' Me'… a Chicago love song before they sucked
Deep Purple 'Woman From Tokyo'… the Purple's last stand… forget anything else that follows it (even on the same album… especially on the same album!)
The Doobie Brothers 'China Grove'… Classic Rock perfectly distilled, I can recall a KSHE rival advertising their station using this song sometime around 1990
The Doobie Brothers 'Long Train Running'… almost didn't make the list, but it just such a seminal Rock tune… plus it feels like a fucking train
The Doobie Brothers 'Without You'… not as well known by the Doobs, but it's a total rocker, and Johnston's singing sounds great
Electric Light Orchestra 'Showdown'… knowing more about the Move now, I can tell this was an evolution from that sound
Emerson, Lake & Palmer 'Jerusalem'… English poetry turned into a song, turned into another song… if I were unabashedly British this would be my song of national pride
Emerson, Lake & Palmer 'Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression (part one)'… the part you probably don't know but should
Emerson, Lake & Palmer 'Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression (part two)'… the part you might know, if you're so inclined
Emerson, Lake & Palmer 'Toccata'… a modern classical music song (1960) turned into prog… it works
Faces 'Silicone Grown'… ode to fake boobs… how did THIS song not get airplay on Classic Rock radio? Seriously, they play the shit out of Rod's solo stuff (from Every Picture), but this is a sloppy, drunken masterpiece
Fleetwood Mac 'Hypnotized'… height of Bob Welch's involvement (he should be in the R&R HOF with the rest of the Mac incarnations, fucking morons)
Funkadelic 'Nappy Dugout'… not enough Black music on this list, but this is a great funk song--quite a title, ahem
J. Geils Band 'Did You No Wrong'… dig the tappy-tap shoes at the beginning
Genesis 'Dancing With the Moonlit Knight'… takes a minute to get going but worth the journey, excellent album opener
Genesis 'Firth of Fifth'… Genesis' best song, bar none… Hackett's guitar solo is something to behold--goosebumps, man
Gentle Giant 'Runaway'… clever intro with the glass breaking to the beat
Gentle Giant 'Way of Life'… progressive rock that defies description… the song's got this frantic, almost-Disco like, drumbeat at the beginning, but turns into a beautiful wall of sound by the end, one of this weirdo band's greatest
Gong 'The Pothead Pixies'… yep, they are
Grand Funk Railroad 'We're an American Band'… yep, they are!
Hall and Oates 'Abandoned Luncheonette'… besides kinda corny lyrics in the verses, it is the chorus that just rules with those faux-Buckmaster strings, holy shit the shiver
Hall and Oates 'She's Gone'… the duo's first hit, and wouldn't be their last (duh!)
Herbie Hancock 'Watermelon Man'… this whole jazz-funk album is uniformly excellent, but this workout is probably the most accessible
Hawkwind 'Brainbox Pollution'… perhaps one of the greatest B-side singles ever
Lee Hazlewood 'Poet, Fool or Bum'… "Bum!" (stole that from a critic describing a contemporary album review)
Billy Joel 'The Piano Man'… where it all started for Mr. William Joel
Elton John 'All the Young Girls Love Alice'… this album rocks, and this is a quintessential number from it
Elton John 'Bennie and the Jets'… a song I've both loved and loathed and loved again, one of EJ and Bernie's best
Elton John 'Funeral For a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding'… an eleven minute epic worth every second… one of the best album-openers of all time
Elton John 'Grey Seal'… don't skip this very 1973-ish gem--crazy coda!
Kool and the Gang 'Hollywood Swinging'… happy slow funk, if that's possible
Led Zeppelin 'Dancing Days'… I think this side opener comes off as generic initially, but it rewards the listener over time
Led Zeppelin 'D'yer Mak'er'… that's "Jamaica" in Cockney… for 'reggae' it's not bad, and it actually reached #20 on the Billboard charts (!!)
Led Zeppelin 'No Quarter'… LZ not necessarily at their hardest, but perhaps their gloomiest
Led Zeppelin 'Over the Hills and Far Away'… I think this has something to do with Tolkien
Led Zeppelin 'Song Remains the Same'… great album opener for a great album, it rocks (surprised it doesn't get more airplay)
Led Zeppelin 'The Ocean'… perfect album closer (okay after their previous album closer)
Led Zeppelin 'The Rain Song'… can Zeppelin actually write a love song?? Yes they can!!
Lynyrd Skynyrd 'Free Bird'… you know it--the ending jam makes this song a bonafide CR standard
Lynyrd Skynyrd 'I Ain't the One'… kind of an unexpected first album opener for what is essentially THE Southern Rock band par-excellence, as it has all that weird Hendrix-like backwards shit, but then it turns swampy and it's awesome
Paul McCartney & Wings 'Band on the Run'… finally, McCartney making some consistent tunes again!
Paul McCartney & Wings 'Jet'… feels like a dinosaur wandering into your living room
Paul McCartney & Wings 'Live and Let Die'… one of the greatest James Bond themes ever
Paul McCartney & Wings 'Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five'… dig the Moog all over this one, and I like how it ties up the album as a loose concept
Mott the Hoople 'All the Way to Memphis'… some little known R&R that should be more well-known IMO (at least it was in that Scorsese movie)
Mott the Hoople 'Whizz Kid'… simple little song about poor twenty-somethings living in NYC… gotta great melody, and it rocks
The O'Jays 'For the Love of Money'… you probably know it as 'money money money mon-ay… MON-ay!', but don't dismiss because the song gets down and dirty quick… I can't believe this groovy funk-pop song wasn't in a Blaxploitation flick
Danny O'Keefe 'Madgalena'… this is just a purty song here… underrated singer-songwriter
Ozark Mountain Daredevils 'If You Wanna Get to Heaven'… yay, Missouri rock
The Pink Fairies 'City Kids'… some proto-punk fer ya, check out Lemmy's version on Motorhead's first album
The Pink Fairies 'Street Urchin'… the last stand for one of the most unknown-but-awesome bands… it even has kind of a finality to it
Pink Floyd 'Any Colour You Like'… a dream on headphones, Wright vs. Gilmour, then combined!
Pink Floyd 'Brain Damage / Eclipse'… perfect ending for a perfect album--turn the volume way up at the very end!
Pink Floyd 'Money'… always one of my top three favorite songs of all-time… I think it is the 7/4 time that just grabs me, and then the change to 4/4 at the bridge, and back
Pink Floyd 'Speak to Me / Breathe / On the Run'… must be heard together for full effect
Pink Floyd 'Time'… fun to scare the kids with the clocks at the beginning
Pink Floyd 'Us and Them'… Floyd would never again sound quite so lush and lovely
Alan Price 'Sell, Sell'… this ex-Animal has a talent for making somewhat unique and timeless music, and this is no exception… more sinister, kinda filthy and in the gutter
Queen 'Keep Yourself Alive'… where it all started for this World-famous band
REO Speedwagon 'Find My Fortune'… the only time the guitarist would sing on an REO tune, and it's totally sweet sounding
REO Speedwagon 'Ridin' the Storm Out'… original lead singer (sorta) is better on this one
REO Speedwagon 'Whiskey Night'…swampy, dig it, like the Doobies but better (usually it's the other way around)
The Rolling Stones '100 Years Ago'… IMO the most underrated Stones song ever--killer jam at the end
The Rolling Stones 'Coming Down Again'… love Taylor's wah-wahs on this one… the ultimate hangover song
The Rolling Stones 'Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)'… zeitgeist, baby!
The Rolling Stones 'Silver Train'… I think they're talking about heroin here… or maybe just trains, I dunno
Roxy Music 'Do the Strand'… look for the awesome video of this track on YT
Roxy Music 'Mother of Pearl'… over time this has been my go-to Roxy song--love Ferry's singing here
Roxy Music 'Street Life'… quintessential Roxy thumper
Roxy Music 'The Bogus Man'… Eno could create some crazy sounds back in the day
Seals and Crofts 'Diamond Girl'… blurs the boundaries of A.M. Gold and Classic Rock
Bruce Springsteen 'Kitty's Back'… kind of an unknown tune (overshadowed on the record by 'Rosalita') but I love the swift changes in tone throughout (whispers, then loud horns, etc.)
Bruce Springsteen 'The E Street Shuffle'… if all of Springsteen sounded like this I might be more interested--one of my favorite codas ever
Steely Dan 'Bodhittsava'… hard not to get swept up in the high-speed excitement on this album opener… LOOK OUT!
Steely Dan 'King of the World'… maybe my favorite Dan tune… has this 'cosmic game show score' feel to it
Steely Dan 'My Old School'… one of the first Steely Dan songs I ever heard (some retro-Bandstand video shown on VH1)--for whatever reason this song did not crack the Top 40, but I think it is probably the most representative song of the band's first three albums… great lyrics, great hook, dig the horns
Steely Dan 'Razor Boy'… some excellent lyrics about a woman who is trying to look classier than she is
Steely Dan 'The Boston Rag'… a slow burn of a song, but the guitar solo by Denny Dias (or it could be Skunk Baxter, not sure) just rips a hole in the pleasantness
Steely Dan 'Your Gold Teeth'… they did 'Do It Again' again, but better… much better!
Iggy & the Stooges 'Gimme Danger'… again, sinister is a theme in 1973 music… but somehow this song seems just a bit out of time, like it could have been made much later
Iggy & the Stooges 'Penetration'… when I first heard this song I didn't like Iggy's breathy growls but they've grown on me
Iggy & the Stooges 'Raw Power'… more proto-punk
Iggy & the Stooges 'Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell (Hard to Beat)'… even more proto-punk
Styx 'Lady'… the guiltiest of guilty pleasures, I absolutely know all the words
T. Rex 'Tenement Lady'… barely made this list, but I really like the groove of this tune
Three Dog Night 'Shambala'… perhaps the best A.M. Gold song of all time… it's that high note: "TELL ME HOW!!!"
The Who '5:15'… one of Keith Moon's greatest drumming performances
The Who 'Bell Boy'… Keith sings too!!
Wizzard 'Bend Over Beethoven'… this tune did not make the album (I think it was a UK single) but it's possibly the most accessible Roy Wood song out there
Stevie Wonder 'Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing'… another out-of-time song, from Stevie's masterpiece record… love the excited Spanish spoken intro
Stevie Wonder 'Higher Ground'… an unending argument in my head is which song is better, this one or the RHCP cover?
Neil Young 'L.A.'… Neil's snarky ode to Los Angeles
Neil Young 'Time Fades Away'… another theme of this year as there are a lot of 'best song by' fill-in-the-blank… here's another one, and I don't care if Neil hates it, it's one of his most depressing yet somehow upbeat songs… works perfectly in the live setting

Finally the month of summer I've been waiting to have: Just sit back and read. That's all I've done. Or all I remember. I'm pretty sure I was kinda exhausted inbetween but I'm opting to ignore that.
Because I read so many gay boys the month prior, I started off with a YA fantasy adventure, The Song that moves the Sun by Anna Bright and it reminded me why I started reading gay boys in the first place. I have no patience for these girls! 8D Throughout the book I kept wondering "Is it just me or is it the book?" I'm not even sure why. One girl was smart after all, the other one overcame her trauma. Nice! But why do the two girls have to fall for the boys who happen to be two as well? I can see one pair, but why both? Also the pacing was terrible, especially towards the end. The chapters switched viewpoints each and were so short later on I had hardly time to adjust to the scene. How are you supposed to get emotionally invested when you don't even get a minute with these guys before being thrown somewhere else? I hate that in movies too. D: Also this:
He smells like the beach somehow, like sweat and boy.
(Emphasis as in original.) What. Who thought this would be a good thing to write? I'm aware that not every sweat smells bad and I assume not every boy does either. But sorry, that line just does not sound good! What is boy-smell anyway? Is there girl-smell too? (The one distinct smell that comes to mind is not a good one ...) They also cuddle a few chapters later after explicitely telling me that they washed their clothes but not themselves. Why would you tell me?! I don't want to knowww!! I don't think the book is a bad one. I just got frustrated. 8D
The next bunch was more fun: Icebreaker (R.L. Graziadei): Not quite what I expected but in a good way! 40 pages to the end I wondered whether they would really wrap it up or need another volume. Thinking about it now I would not mind a 2nd book. uAu Thanks a lot, Universe (Chad Lucas): The wildest Middle grade book I read so far! You know that when the first episode of an anime series is all nice and dandy and then there's that insane after-credits-scene? The beginning of this felt a little bit like that. And it just continued! And it was so nice. The Loophole (Kaz Kutub): I liked it. Felt a bit different from usual. Reggie was a handful and is was glorious. But f*** that "I thought about it for months but I'm upset with you because you cannot decide within three seconds"-Farouk. uAu Boyfriend Material (Alexis Hall): Good characters and that humour that actually reminded me of Earnest by Oscar Wilde (must be because both involve British nobility). 8D Looking forward to volume 2! (I read the German edition, so vol2 will be in January!) Der Heilige Fisch (Dia Lane): A detective novel by a German selfpublishing author with illustrations by Livanya. I bought the book at her artist alley table at Dokomi this year. :D I usually don't read mystery and I could never write any, so my respect to the author. A solid read, I'd say. uAu Small Town Pride (Phil Stamper): More Middle grade! Nice and sweet. I believe this would be a good read for parents as well, because the adults in this have just as much growing up to do as the kids and it'd probably provide a good insight into the perspective of a queer kid. A Little Bit Country (Brian D. Kennedy): I know nothing about country music and I would never have listenend to it by my own free will before but the nice thing about good books is how they can give you a reason to like something you never knew before, right? Not that I actually went and listened to single song but I did open my mind and will be benevolent when I ever come across one. uAub The book was solid and I liked how it all came together (and yes, I bought it for the cover). The Past and Other Things that Should Stay Buried (Shaun David Hutchinson): The Past was my SDH book of the month and it was that book about friendship I've been screaming to read these past months. That's why I feel a little bad I didn't like it as much as some of his other works. 8D But I did like July. Much like Jenny from A Complicated Love Story. They are probably not girls I would like to engage in real life but reading about them is so much better than these boring whiny emotional soft girls. /D I probably said it before, but I just like how Mr. Hutchinson wraps his serious thoughts in these weird ideas and just goes with them. Last was another one by SDH, The State of Us, which I borrowed from the library. I was hesistant about this because the “Red White & Royal Blue” comparison and such, but as you can figure I like the author's other books so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I don't care about US politics so that might've made it easier for me to enjoy. It was far from groundbreaking, but I had fun. I also liked that Dean was on the ace spectrum. uAub
And ... I guess tumblr does do brainwashing after all. I just borrowed The Foxhole Court from the library. We'll be going to Seoul in a few days and it will be a very long flight, sooo ... uAu~ (I also have “A Far Wilder Magic” und “A Taste of Gold and Iron”.)

hey i'm trying to get into the lemon twigs before i see them open for mcr, i was wondering if you had any song recks or suggestions for other blogs to follow? thanks! :)
yes so happy to answer this question! i want everyone to get into them lol. and I’m sure you didn’t mean for me to go so in depth but oh boy i'm about to infodump LMAO. also which night are you going to? i’ll be seeing them in brooklyn on 9/11!
all of the lemon twigs albums sound kind of different so here’s a little break down of them:
Do Hollywood (2016)- came out when they were 17 & 19 years old! CRAZY good for a debut! gerard is a very big fan of this album and posted about it when it came out. i would start with this one! the biggest inspos musically i would say are like beach boys/beatles mixed with foxygen/tame impala. a fun mix of psychedelic rock and baroque pop and electronic with a vintage sound! i would say the stand outs are “I Wanna Prove To You,” “As Long As We’re Together,” “These Words,” and “A Great Snake” :)
Go To School (2018)- so then they were like ok now we’re gonna do something COMPLETELY different. how about a rock musical about a chimpanzee named shane raised as a human boy who wants to go to school??? it is incredible and it’s so camp but also heartwrenching. if you like musical theater influences and rock operas (like i do) give this one a listen, it’s my absolute favorite!!! their actual mother plays the shane's mom, and shane’s dad is played by 70s rocker Todd Rundgren??? that’s camp. i would recommend listening to it all in one go as it is a story, but there are definitely some stand outs that can be listened to out of context like fan favorite (and my favorite) “Queen of My School,” “Small Victories,” and “Never In My Arms, Always In My Heart.” if you’ve got a couple minutes and want to understand the story before you listen, this is a great video where they break it down track by track.
Songs For The General Public (2020)- so some people didn’t really like “get” the conceptual chimp musical so then i guess they were like “ok fuck it! this next album is gonna be called ‘songs for the general public!’” LMAO. if you like music from the 70s then this is the album for you!!! if you didn’t know it came out in 2020 you would honestly think this was from like 1972. it’s a love letter to early 70s glam rock and power pop and influenced by lou reed/velvet underground, bowie, big star, the replacements, etc the list goes on. stand outs from this one imo are “The One” (which i have a tattoo referencing! the art was inspired by @trytogethappy ‘s SFTGP flash sheet. i would HIGHLY recommend checking out their blog and their art if you haven’t already!), "Moon," “No One Holds You (Closer Than The One You Haven’t Met),” “Hell On Wheels,” “Only A Fool,” and “Hog.”
i actually made a spotify playlist for my friends when i was convincing them to get into the lemon twigs, so that could also be a good place to start!
i’ve seen them 4 times this past year, and they’ve recently been touring mostly with songs from their latest album and new songs from their album thats apparently coming out later this year. so i would say listen to Songs For The General Public if you want to recognize the songs they play opening for MCR!
they are an INCREDIBLE live band and they have some really fun music videos, so i’m gonna link a couple of my favorite videos under the cut if you’re someone like me who likes to get the full audio&visual!
"I Wanna Prove To You" music video (very wes anderson vibes)
"As Long As We're Together" music video (fun, surrealist, and synth-y)
"Never In My Arms, Always In My Heart" music video (introduces the story of Go To School very well, also really showcases michael's talent as a camp icon and frontman)
"The One" music video (glam alert!!! fun fact: my hair is blonde bc of michael in this video lmao he gives me insane gender envy)
Live at Amoeba 2016
Live at KEXP 2016
Live at KEXP 2018 (oooh a hot new backing band! brian is a fucking guitar god in this one and michael is out of his awkward teen phase and into his lou reed era)
Live on Jimmy Kimmel 2018 (definitely their best tv performance)
"Hog" Live Version (this makes me sob and michael's vocals are the best they've ever been)
Full Performance- Live @ Underground Arts 2022 (this is their entire show in philly a couple months ago if you wanna get a feel of their current live shows/what to expect when they open! and if you spot a cute fat little blonde bitch excitedly dancing in the front the whole time unaware that they were being filmed- that is, in fact, me LMAO)

Kick-starting the Rock n’ Roll Revival - The Post-Psychedelic Fun of “Wild Honey” (1967)
1967′s Smiley Smile painted the image of a Beach Boys that is thoroughly, energetically, and creatively spent- especially following the immense stress with the band’s collapse of success, drugs & mental health issues, and the collapse of Smile. But with Wild Honey- the band has never felt more unified and alive. And not only that, they helped initiate major changes not just from within the band, but also to the music world as well thanks to one move...going back to rock and roll’s roots and embracing R&B.
After total burnout and a severely stressful 1967, and with a lot of the music world lambasting the band as “ball-less choir boys” the band sought to re-invent themselves as a self-contained rock act, intentionally distancing themselves away from the lush, theatrical and extremely complex compositions of Pet Sounds and other psychedelic acts that filled the market, and make music that the band could actually enjoy making- recording at Brian’s home with only band-mates and their talents; only a love for R&B, Soul, and Motown driving their music process, more lo-fi than Smile.
However to call this lo-fi, either musically or instrumentally is almost misleading- not less because the newer 2017 stereo transfer of it shows greater musical depth and complexities in the background than ever heard before. Indeed, perhaps the Beach Boys’ greatest yet most underrated talent is their ability to immediately & effectively evoke worlds of fun, love and summer. This is used to great effect in tracks like “Let The Wind Blow”, “Country Air”, and their fantastic single “Darlin’“ and cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Was Made to Love Her”- using their stripped-down approach with great precision and shining beautifully here. The landscapes they paint with their songwriting and musical chops help blur the lines between psychedelia and rock and roll, in various moods, setting, and form- from hazy countrysides, frantic parties, and flowering declarations of love.
The transition to blues rock for people unaware of the Boys’ later work sounds very unusual- some tracks you’d swear were made by The Rolling Stones in the late-60s. Yet, the psychedelic sound is still here, some songs can’t help feeling still a wee bit druggy or floaty throughout the album- but this shows how the album is considered to be an important transition point from psychedelia to the back-to-basics trend rock made after the Summer of Love, predating such work made by The Beatles, The Band, and even the Doors’ later work in Morrison Hotel- perhaps consequentially enough, Jim Morrison himself was a fan of Wild Honey.
But in the midst of musical evolution, and the return of Brian Wilson and Mike Love’s songwriting partnership- perhaps the real standout star from Wild Honey is the youngest Wilson brother: Carl. Carl Wilson’s voice and performance is even more powerful, that much more soulful and at times raw. His performances in the title track and “Darlin’” command the listener’s attention for just how much the man is giving his all and singing his soul out due to his immense love of Motown and blues music. And as Brian was very slowly ceding his leadership role, Carl’s increased presence in Wild Honey and future albums was consequential as he would soon become the de-facto leader of the band after 1970.
Considering that after 1967, the band members grew older, got married and had kids, and shifted to a more mature image and sound- Wild Honey feels like the final burst of youthful energy from a band that gained its fame partially for their songs’ focus on teenage summer love and fun- it’s still here and very much alive, but the form it takes on is notably different. Considering it’s historicity for being one of the first back-to-basics rock album, and its consequential influence on other major acts, Wild Honey comes close to being as important in music history as Pet Sounds and even Smiley Smile before it- As summer rolls around, it deserves a listen while we ourselves try to find a youthful love of fun & sun once more.

I was tagged by @benjhawkins to share three albums I’ve been listening to lately. Thank you, friend!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1) Lee Murdoch, Here We'll Stand. This is mostly about the Ballad of Ned Myers for me. Heavily pro-USA, War of 1812-themed album, but has a good song about Oliver Hazard Perry.
2) The Beach Boys, Surf's Up. I am never not on a Beach Boys/Brian Wilson kick, at least low-key. For those unfamiliar with the Beach Boys, this is not an album about girls and cars. The title song is a wild collaboration with Van Dyke Parks, and I will always, always vibe to Til I Die.
3) Allysen Callery, The Song the Songbird Sings. Described as "ghost folk" by the artist, wistful haunting Rhode Island coast music, inspired by British Isles folk. It's Not the Ocean (spotify link) is on repeat in my head. O Deathless and Divine is another wonderful song from this album, that has a youtube video.
Tagging @joachimnapoleon, @elyksina, @theiceandbones, @signalseven, @areyougonnabe and @rhavewellyarnbag but only if you want to do it!

Many thanks to @run-rabbitrun for the brilliant idea: here's a list of songs that would be absolutely to die for in the vocal/instrumental stylings of each member of CSNY.
Crosby: Once I was - Tim Buckley
A couple of months ago I read a piece where someone was comparing Tim Buckley and David Crosby’s songwriting styles and I absolutely agree there are many similarities, especially if we’re talking about his Byrds days or his solo career. This song would be perfect for David. Atmospheric, evocative, and about somebody desperately searching for an answer or some kind of meaning. It also vocally builds and “explodes” at the end just like so many of David songs do!
Stills: Sway - The Rolling Stones
I knew I wanted a Stones song for Stephen, I just had to settle on which one. So many to choose from. Their catalogue as a whole is such a great fit for him: very bluesy, sometimes a little country and almost always with a jam vibe to it. The desperation in the lyrics would give him a chance to pour his heart out like we know he can, but it’s also such a groovy, rocking song I can totally see fitting his raspy voice like a glove. And I’d really like to hear his version of the final guitar solo, because I’ve never heard a Stephen solo I wasn’t blown away by.
Nash: Maybe I’m Amazed - Paul McCartney
Graham has given me major Paul vibes ever since I started listening to CSNY. As I was listening to Songs for Beginners for the first time, I was mentally comparing it to McCartney’s self titled first solo album, which of course includes this wonderful song. I believe they share a similar attitude towards music and lyrics especially: they write simple but very genuine and effective words. Plus, you know, in terms of vocal range Graham is probably one of 4 male singers in history who could pull this one off? 😂
Young: Surfer Girl - The Beach Boys
Okay I can’t take full credit for this particular pick, as my friend @youngshakespeare is the genius who came up with this! I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out. Neil’s singing voice is impossibly high-pitched and filled with beautiful melancholy. You know who also fits that definition to a T? Brian freaking Wilson. I envision this with a completely different arrangement, kinda like Paul Simon did it with just an acoustic guitar, but I think Neil’s very unique vocal quality would transport these simple lyrics to another dimension (in a very different way from to the original).

things that i am absolutely baffled by
- people who dont have sensory issues w/water just put their entire face under the shower???
- not everyone’s parents have yelled at them at some point
- people who can just,,,,do things.  like they think “im gonna do x” and then immediately get up and do it
- conversations. what the fuck is that about
- apparently most people dont (try to) listen to an artist’s entire discography once they decide the like them
- people just say things to their therapist.  i know thats what theyre there for but like how do you bring shit up
