Going from Funger to reading Beserk for the first time is really funny actually
It's like slowly peeling away the layers of reskin and whenever you think you're done it's just: Ha HA! Fantasy Vatican is from Beserk too!!
Love it, this is deeply improving my reading experience :D

Hi Wilson. 👋 I've seen you talk about Supergiant before so I thought I'd ask what your feelings on Pyre are (if you've played it)? I have it + Transistor in my Steam library from some good promotions awhile back, but didn't consider playing them until recently.
HI OKAY i can definately tell you about them but ive only played pyre once and transistor about 3 times ❤❤❤
PYRE is set in a world where after people are exiled into purgatory, they can compete in an ancient sport against rival teams in order to return to where they came from. it's a 3v3 get-the-ball-into-the-other-team's-goal to diminish their flame until you win game with some enviromental mechanics and different movesets depending on the characters you use. the matches are seperated by character driven story moment, you meet these characters along the way and depending on dialouge choices can learn about their individual lives, why they were exhiled and why they want to return. i found it a bit overwhelming with all the text but that was like YEARS ago. as always the character design is beautiful, i loved witnessing the developing relationships between everyone, the lore and character writing was really good - i'd honestly propose its the best supergiant has put out. the player is their own character and you start in an established group of nomads. there's multiple endings depending on how you choose to play with a big theme of sacrifice that i was compelled by.
i'd definately give it a go but if you don't like the party gameplay then drop it after a couple matches tbh because it doesn't get much more compelling from that i remember.
TRANSISTOR however is my FAVOURITE supergiant game of all the ones ive played (literally ever single one except hades 2). murder-by-passion with a lot of sci-fi horror elements. a deadly virus starts transforming people into organic robots whilst the corrupt group in charge are powerless to stop it, triggered (iirc) by the accidental murder of singer red's bodyguard, in an attack that was meant to kill her. the game will tell you the story between the main couple is a tragic romance but it is LARGELY about the dangers of codependence. however because the game doesn't realise that, its sort of fumbled, but i still really enjoy the story regardless. timestop stratergy rpg with a lot of customisation on loadouts with primary, secondary and passive options on all attacks (IF i'm remembering correctly), a new game plus option where you keep your previous collected abilities and also the option to just hammer shit in real time... but you will get your ass kicked if you take on every fight that way. incredibly compelling cast of characters despite only really meeting 3, the rest you discover with the lore through voting stations, points of interest and conversations you'll witness between the protagonists. it has one of my favourite villains of all time and the sequence where you finally meet him is INCREDIBLY well done. it's been a while but i'm pretty sure my feelings wouldn't change on replay when i say the final battle was so fun and subverted my expectations of the gameplay in a really interesting way.
i think everyone should play transistor atleast once, if not just for the gameplay but like i said i am a sucker for the story even tho the ending is... divisive 👍

My Favorite Books of 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My book bracket did help me narrow down my actual favorites of the year. It wasn't an exquisite reading year, especially compared to the couple prior, but I did still read quite a few good books. I'll give mini-synopses and brief reviews below the cut, but I've also linked my storygraph reviews for each with their star ratings.
9. This Must Be the Place by Kate Racculia (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️): When Arthur's wife Amy dies suddenly, he finds himself in her hometown, boarding at the inn run by Amy's childhood best friend Mona and Mona's daughter Oneida.
This was just a right book, right time for me, I think. There's a lot going on in here about motherhood, [best, female] friendship, the selfishness of love, the nebulousness of personhood. I don't know if this would've hit as hard if my best friend hadn't just had a baby, but that's the beauty of it – I'll never know. There was also a focus on art and artistry that I really liked, and I'm a sucker for an ensemble cast. I also appreciated that even though there were intended "reveals" or "twists," they were written as more authentic secrets than as if trying to be a thriller.
8. The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️): From the afterlife, a group of women from popular superhero stories tell their sides of the tales.
This book is structured as a short story collection, but there's a worldbuilding throughline; the women are having a night together at a bar in the afterlife. I'm not a comic book fan, but even I could discern which characters were were talking around (mostly DC properties). It's more of an exploration than an outright critique of the fridged trope. After all, a character's death is always meaningful: How did she die? Did she deserve to? Was there any other choice? All these women died for valid, viable reasons, could only be saved at the expense of the world, but – that does not make them less of a person. Even as a mere creative writing exercise, I really enjoyed this one.
7. Die: Fantasy Heartbreaker by Kieron Gillen et al. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️): A group of highschoolers in the 80s create a ttrpg that comes to life, literally disappearing into it for two years; now, when they're established adults with families of their own, they're summoned back.
Honestly kinda hard for me to justify putting a single volume of a comic collection on my favorites but... this slapped. As a D&D enjoyer, it brought the best elements of post fiction and RP together; the "real" characters are complex and rounded 40yos with families and lives, but they're as invested in their "PCs" as humanly possible – having had to actually be them for years. The second one went to kind of a weird place, so I reserve judgement on the series as a whole, but volume one is impeccable.
6. And Then I Woke Up by Malcolm Devlin (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️): An epidemic sweeps the world, manifesting in the infected people hallucinating that all non-infected are zombies; at a rehabilitation center, a cured man tells his story.
This one's hard to convey my thoughts about. The most powerful element in this book is the nuance – of morality, of belief systems, of perceived reality. This isn't strictly a zombie story, but it effectively utilizes the best parts of one to provide a sort of narrative foil to the genre. There's quite a lot of social commentary in the guise of perception-altering disease. I'm certain I didn't pin it all down with one read. Definitely on my re-read list.
5. Our Dreams at Dusk [quartet] by Yuhki Kamatani (⭐️|⭐️|⭐️|⭐️⭐️): When Tasuko Kaname fears he's been outed at school, he flees, contemplating suicide until a mysterious "someone-san" leads him to a community center full of peers and mentors.
I hunted this down on recommendation from Julia Drawfee and was impressed my library has it. I can't resist a short manga series and this is a beautiful one. Seeing as the majority of my manga reading days were in the 00s, I was expecting a subtler story & was extremely impressed by the nuance and diversity of queerness in this story. The whole series is beautiful and wonderful but the kicker was weeping through the entirety of the final volume.
4. Kill the Boy Band by Goldie Moldavsky (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️): A group of teen girls – superfans of the boy band The Ruperts – accidentally kidnaps a band member, and events quickly spiral out of control.
It's 👏 camp 👏. God, I'm tempted to stop there. There is a very specific reader this appeals to, and having been solidly in the One Direction fandom, I'm afraid those readers are few and far between. The vibe is, essentially, boyband slash RPF reader/writers that do not genuinely believe the boyband is secretly dating. You have to have genuine passion (peak boybandom obsession) and realistic reason (the boyband is truly just some dudes). And the distance to poke fun at yourself while genuinely empathizing. God this vibe is so difficult to describe. It's my own boyband fandom white whale lmao.
3. Husband Material by Alexis Hall (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️): Luc and Oliver are still in love and very happy, but as a number of their peers get engaged, tie the knot, and otherwise build families for themselves, the couple feels pressure facing their future.
I can't believe I read this this year. My only apprehension with this one was that of any sequel – it wouldn't be as good as the first book. And the stakes were high, since Boyfriend Material is one of my favorite books ever. Stakes doubly high because I wanted to reread it first and feared it wouldn't live up to my memory. But they both knock it out of the park. Husband Material's ending glides over some nuance, but I agree with the stance and it's in the UK so I'll let it slide. It's not a "why does this exist sequel," but actually a sequel with something to say which I really appreciate. Right onto my favorites shelf, and can't wait for the rest of the series.
2. Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️): In a world of courtly vampires, Remy is a Reaper (vampire hunter) while rumored to be half-vampire himself. When a mysterious vampire disease begins sweeping the nation, he finds himself reluctantly investigating with a vampire lord and lady from a neighboring empire.
I love vampire books. I love zombie books. Hence: zombie vampire book??? With canonical bisexual polyamory??? I've not seen anyone dislike this, but I've also not seen many people at all reading it. Much like Rin Chupeco's YA fantasy series The Bone Witch; I think they're just a criminally underrated author. This series is giving very similar vibes to bone witch – deep, rich worldbuilding, diverse characters, unique lore – but clearly and intentionally aged up – graphic gore, explicit sex. Which is all to say it's everything I loved as a teen reader, but built out to satisfy me as an adult with wider life experience.
1. The Radiant Emperor Duology by Shelley Parker-Chan (⭐️⭐️|⭐️⭐️⭐️): Zhu Chongba usurps her brother's destiny of greatness and passes herself off as a man from her childhood in a monastery to her adulthood on the battlefields of Mongol China. When her Mandate manifests, she moves to challenge the Great Khan himself, while a number of other political players have their own plans.
Hey this???? Altered my brain chemistry. I'm cheating and lumping the two together because that's how duologies work in my mind; greater than the sum of their parts. But Hoo Boy did these drive me insane in discrete and unique ways. I can't say much about this series without waxing on forever, so I'll keep it to this: I had heard this pitched as a fantasy Mulan retelling and it most certainly is not. It is a historical ensemble saga about duty, identity, and personhood, with some minor magical realism. I can't find it for the life of me but that post about how being aro and/or ace gives ppl access to new relationship flavors, shrimp-color-style? I think this duology might do the same. It felt like the author had hacked into my own genetic code and started braiding something in there.

I would like to recommend the catalog of these writers:
@ditttiii - so I realize I’m following them on AO3 when I realized the fics looked familiar 🤭. They have an ongoing series called Enchanted to Meet You which you might want to check out if you like Soulmate AUs too! I recently reblogged a Jungkook two-shot comfort fic (hybrid au too) so I recommend going through their masterlist!
@aroseforyoongi - who I discovered because of Gossamer (KTH). It was completed but I think it’s up for re-write/re-post? You can try the others:
Navy Blue - Jungkook [completed]
Forever Yours - Yoongi [one shot, prequel to Navy Blue]
Let Me Love You- Jungkook [one shot]
@magicalsalamander - another favorite author of mine I just feel like I’m reading a great tale every time I start on a series or one shot. They have great fics with supernatural themes too

@therealmintedmango - They have a whole masterlist of their hybrid!au fics. I recently finished Kingdom Come and I always remember Jimin from King (for some reason)
@joonbird - check their Zodiac Hybrid Masterlist of one shot per member

There are more (usually one shot per member) but I’ll probably put them in another Fic Rec List for Hybrid AUs. Sorry this list is kind of all over the place (not even organized per member 🤭). But good luck with your modules and I hope these help!

HEY THERE, you have me interested in The Untamed but I'm a little lost as to where to start, there's both a 50 episode normal version and a 20 episode special edition, which should I watch/start with? Also WHAT does your svsss tag stand for? I'm seeing "The Untamed" and "Chén Qíng Lìng" and "Mo Dao Zu Shi" and "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" thrown around as synonyms or related pieces of media, but nothing with svsss!
Sure thing!!
Okay, to start with, I’d definitely go with the 50-episode version. It’s a Lot, and there is some padding added to the story compared to the original book, but twenty episodes seems really, really short to do justice to the central plot
(a quick skim of google tells me that the special edition leans harder into the original novel’s gayness, which the show has to be coy about, because china. i think there are expanded scenes featuring the two leads, which is awesome, because their acting is AMAZING, but that just means the plot scenes are even more compressed. I saw at least one person recommend that you not do the special edition unless you’ve consumed the story in at least one other more standard format already)
Also! Iirc, the show is available on youtube and netflix, among other platforms, though those two are wonderfully accessible. However, comma, I do hear from people fluent in chinese that the subtitles sometimes are inaccurate in unnecessary/unfortunate ways. From what I hear, viki has the best complete set of subtitles (I think there may be fansub projects in progress, but I am not at all in touch with those. I still haven’t watched the show myself).
And the general summary of my current webnovel fixation! There’s this webnovel author who goes by mxtx, who currently has three complete books out, which have all been translated into english. Then after I finished those, I started branching out into other authors and webnovels, though I’m not too deep into that end of the pool yet. I’ll break each book into a separate paragraph for clarity.
Oh, and. Each of these books is explicitly gay, and set in ancient fantasy china, in a wuxia/xianxia setting, which I’m not too familiar with myself, but I believe it functions a lot like how authors will use ‘ancient fantasy europe’ as a playground where they don’t necessarily need to match up to established countries/cities/etc, but they expect readers to recognize certain conventions, like I’d be able to recognize a western author writing a basic feudal setting, or recognize witches and wizards, without them explaining the whole thing from the bottom up. Since I’m not familiar, it raised the difficulty level a little for me to get into the genre, but the webnovel translators tend to use footnotes and I picked up a lot as I went on.
(if you are interested in any of these, novelupdates.com is a good central resource collecting links to various fan translation projects)
So! Mxtx. Her earliest book is The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (SVSSS), which is also the shortest and most linear of her books. The general premise is that a guy who’s been hate-reading this (straight) stallion harem webnovel with a dark protagonist. He goes to bed, and wakes up in the novel, as the protagonist’s dickbag teacher, who is doomed to eventually die horribly. He wants to not die, and is also a decent human being, so the book follows the “original” novel derailing from its intended path, and accidentally getting super duper gay. This one is about to come out in donghua form, but I think that may be its first non-book adaption.
Her second book, which was adapted into The Untamed/Chen Qing Ling (CQL), is also known as The Grandmaster Of Demonic Cultivation/Mo Dao Zu Shi (MDZS), which really manages to be the hardest of her books to summarize. Wei Wuxian, the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, dies. Thirteen years later, he wakes up in someone else’s body. Most of the world would like him to stay dead, tbh, but he’s a good egg, and he and his old friend(????) go forth and solve a necromantic mystery together, and also there is romance-romance and ten million family feelings. This one gets nonlinear, with several extended flashback sequences, and the story STARTS at about the midway point of the plot. This has been adapted into an audio drama at least once, a manhua, a donghua, and now a live action show, so it goes by a million different names in its various formats.
Her third book, and the LONGEST, is Heaven Official’s Blessing/Tian Guan Ci Fu (TGCF), and oh my god, it’s so long, and I love it so, so much. This gets into high fantasy much  more than the other two, including the idea that as people develop their cultivation and powers, they may eventually achieve immortality and ascend to the heavens. The story follows Xie Lian who achieved immortality and ascended to heaven! And then fell. And then ascended! And fell again. Eight hundred years later, he ascends for the third time. He meets Hua Cheng, the ridiculously powerful ghost king, who most of the other immortals are terrified of. But Hua Cheng seems to like Xie Lian! And Xie Lian thinks Hua Cheng is a sweet boy! (hua cheng is a sweet boy, but only for xie lian). This also has extended flashback sequences, but is a more linear story than MDZS, I think. Also it made me cry, which, wow, rude. I love it so incredibly much. This also exists as a manhua, but I think it’s still being published? I haven’t read it yet.
NOW. Mxtx is working on a fourth book, but it’s not out in chinese yet, never mind english. But I needed More. I was getting some SVSSS vibes from this one other book, which, *wobbly hand motions*, but I am enjoying the hell out of this book purely for its own sake.
Meatbun is an author with other books that I haven’t read yet, but I am currently in the middle of The Husky And His White Cat Shizun/Er Ha He Ta De Bai Mo Shi Zun (Erha/2ha), which is at this moment being adapted to a live action tv show called Immortality. There are MANY warnings that go with this book, though the google docs translation files do a good job of placing warnings at the front of every document and in front of relevant chapters. The general premise! Mo Ran basically conquered the entire world, put down all resistance by force, and was a super powerful but Kinda Dumb emperor. As part of this, he took his old teacher, who he despised with a burning passion, prisoner, and abused him a Lot. The story starts as rebels try to mount an assault on his palace, and Mo Ran’s cousin gets impatient with how slowly things are moving and runs ahead of the group. He finds that (suicide warning:) Mo Ran has... taken poison, and is in the middle of dying. This doesn’t stick. He wakes up as a teenager, apparently having traveled back in time, and starts living through events again, with the knowledge of his past life. It took me a while to warm up to this story, but ohhhh my goodness, it’s so TASTY. The translation for this one is ongoing, and I am in AGONY waiting for further updates.
So those are the ones I’m currently into and mostly blogging about! I also read Dreamer In The Spring Boudoir, mostly because feynite wrote an SVSSS fic set in the universe of that novel, which was good in some ways, left me cold in others (and the original novel is straight, with a society with rigid gender roles, so making it super gay in the fic made the setting much more interesting to me). Meatbun has other writing, which I haven’t sampled yet, but I am definitely interested in doing that sometime soon.
Sorry, I know this is a LOT, so if you have any other questions feel free to ask me!! I got into these mostly via being interested in the untamed, so I read them as 1) mdzs, 2) svsss, 3) tgcf, 4) erha, which was an order that worked well for me. But if someone was looking for a general order to read them in, independent of that, I might suggest 1) svsss, 2) mdzs, 3) tgcf, 4) erha. They’re all really good, and scratch different emotional itches, and each of them has at least a few characters who sucker-punch me RIGHT in the goddamn heart. They’ve been a HUGE help for me dealing with the restlessness and/or apathy of quarantine, so I’ve been evangelizing them to pretty much anyone who will listen to me, hahaha

For most of us, life as we know it took a turn on that sunday afternoon of March 15. In my case, that meant the two pending cats I had on Wednesday were cancelled. To be honest, for a minute, I was quite excited. For me it meant no more late nights trying to understand the classification of wetland hydrology. That was something. It's all fun and games until someone is hooked up to a ventilator...if you're lucky enough to get admitted to a hospital.
It's now been almost two weeks since.Unfortunatly, for most Kenyans it's still business as usual. I'm finally beginning to understand the term African timers. What do you get when you impose a curfew to a people who use the term ALUTA ( Portuguese for struggle)to describe their night life? I'll tell you what..you get what we witnessed last friyay. Sad really.
Anyway, being the law abiding citizen that I am☺, mother, daughter and sister, I've been self quarantined at home, with the people I love. I have to admit though, it's not been easy peasy lemon squeezy. I am a sucker for routine. Being home under the circumstances, I had to come up with a new routine or die of boredom elsewise. I've decided to share everything I'm learning during self quarantine.
So, the disease is COVID-19 short for Corona Virus Disease caused by Corona Virus 2 ( SARs- COV-2). It was discovered in 2019 in Wuhan, China. The period between contracting the virus and when the symptoms begin to show is called incubation period. For COVID-19, it's 1-14 days. It spreads through movement of people with no or mild symptoms, unaware they have the disease. It's symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties among others. It attacks the lungs could potentially lead to death with a mortality rate of 3.4%. That's 3 deaths in every 100 people. This is why social distancing is critical in stopping the spread of this disease. If you limit your social contact, you cut off a link in the chain of infection. Statistics show that 25% of Corona virus transmission occur in pre-symptomatic stages.
Staying at home could help save someone's life especially the vulnerable population, the elderly. Avoid gatherings, bars, stages, and handling paper money. Ask yourself, do I really need to....? If the answer is no, stay at home. Before leaving that house, take a good look at your kid, your partner, your brother, your mother and keep in mind that that may be the day you bring home the virus. Would you live with yourself? No? Good, STAY AT HOME!! Unless it's an emergency. A date is not an emergency people! The gym is not an emergency! You'll have all the time in the world to get married and have parties once all this is over. You literally only live once, I don't know about you but I want to graduate. Raise my son. See my mum cry on my graduation day and hold my dad's hand as he walks me down the isle, someday. STAY AT HOME.
In the event you do go out, wash your hands with running water and soap constantly for at least 20 seconds or use a sanitizer. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and dispose it properly. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects. Do not touch your face but most importantly, unless it's unavoidable, stay at home.
While we wait for all these to end, keep yourself busy. I love reading. I actually realized I do some time late last year. Since then read technically anything I get my hands on. Problem is I read up to four books simultaneously, and with school going on, I had several books to finish. I'm happy to say I'm almost done now. My point is when you do what you love, you'll hardly ever get bored. Figure out what it is and do that.
Perfect your art. We all have that thing we feel we can get really good at. You know you're good at it, but you always feel like you could be better. We'll, this is the perfect opportunity. Practice makes perfect. And you have all the time in the world being at home and all. Why don't you start painting again? Continue writing that story, learn that choreography. Prepare yourself, because the world is not ready for you. Literally
Finally, trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding. In every thing that you do, commit your plans to the Lord and they shall be established. Those who trust in the lord will never be disappointed. I know it's scary, it's crazy, but we who believe in God have something no one else in the world has, we are saved by God's grace through our faith. Be still and know that he is God😊

So, I'm trying to understand this, from a person who has next to no knowledge on the series. What exactly is going on with Attack on Titan? And I'm more than willing to read a long rant if it means I get an explanation.
If you’re wondering why the tag for the manga blew up in recent weeks, that’s one specific thing - a character “death” (or at least, character-serious-injury) that’s got fans freaking out.
If you’re wondering why everything has been sucking for like two straight years of manga and people like me keep making very salty posts about it, that’s a whole other topic.
Tumblr media
And that’s what I’m gonna cover in this rant: How Attack on Titan has been shitting its own bed for more than a year now.
Basic Setup: Attack on Titan takes place in a world where the remnants of humanity live in a walled city. The city’s walls protect them from gigantic, grotesque “Titans” who attempt to devour people on sight.
…but naturally, as the story went on, it got way more complicated.
Most of the problems with the manga began circa the time-skip (which is also where the Anime is going to catch up to once the current season 3 is finished). Rarely has there ever been a time-skip in fiction that’s been wonderfully received, but the four-year gap between “Return to Shanganshima” and the “Marley” arc has to be one of the worst.
But the whole crash-and-burn kind of starts right before the time-skip, when we first learn the name “Marley,” begin to learn the true origin of Titans, and uncover true enemy opposing our heroes via a forced flashback. For the purposes of this little essay, let’s just put all of the Marley-related information into one big collection - I’m not gonna separate the last couple chapters pre-timeskip from all the tons we’ve had afterwards. All things dealing with the aforementioned “enemy” will just go into one big fuckpile.
SO. The time-skip jumped forward fouryears into an arc that lasted almost a year without letting us see any of our established protagonists. Instead, we follow… the enemy I just mentioned.
And since Attack on Titan begins and goes for most of its duration without any clear enemies outside of “TEH TITANS” and “general assholes within the system,” this is where I have to put a spoiler cut.
A Rant on Titan
So the enemy of the characters we know so far is Marley, the actual source of the titans. The world isn’t destroyed at all, naturally. Our heroes just live in one isolated place on the planet, which is forced to be surrounded by Titans because Marley shoved them into that walled city and then created Titans on the regular.
Marley is a nation of………………
…*SIGH*…
okay, look. I could try to call Marley  a “Nazi Germany allegory,” but the allegory is so thin that they’re basically just incredibly overt Nazis. They’re a military-focused nation of incredible genetic pride where purity is celebrated and where one particular race - a group of both different genetic descendancy than them AND of different religious beliefs - are treated as inferior garbage. The Marley government sees “Eldians” as disposable. They are forced to wear armbands with stars on their arms (YES, REALLY) to identify them in public, and they also make them lived in fenced-off, separate communities.
Marley’s science experiments on Eldians (yup, they tossed that in, too) resulted in the creation of the TITANS. It turns the Eldians into mindless prisoners of their own bodies who grow in size, deform, try to eat people instinctively, and long only for their own deaths.
Tumblr media
If they made a third AOT video game, it’d have to be something like this. …. So maybe we shouldn’t.
ANYWAY. During this Marley story arc, we mostly follow child soldiers. They’re of “low birth” because of their race. They chose to enter military service in exchange for having their families treated like regular human beings one day, if they earn their way to become titan-shifters. Nevermind that titan-shifters all die within seven years because of the power of turning into a titan - it’s worth it to raise their family’s status beyond just your regular Jews Eldians, right? Nevermind that they’d never really be seen as equals. Even those who have elevated their own rank by becoming shifters are shown to still be subject to some snark and disdain, but yknow - you were just born that way, so you’re shitty regardless, right?
Through this horrific scenario, we follow a few kids in particular - most notably Falco, who is gradually seeing reality and realizing how they don’t deserve to be treated like shit and that this is all a work - and Gabi, who is becoming increasingly militant and more zealous over time.
RELEVANT SIDE NOTE: Gabi’s character design is based upon a sketch Isayama once did of a gender-shfited Eren Jeager (Eren Jaeger is the main protagonist of the series). For that reason, you might be inclined ot think that Gabi is some kind of alternate/parallel Eren.
Except that’s fucking ridiculous, of course!
Gabi is shown to only care about her own rage against the people within the walls of “Paradis” (the sarcastic name for the walled city where all of our heroes come from) above ALL else. She doesn’t care about her family at all, never noticing her brother’s suicidal tendencies and pain even as Falco is acutely aware of it. The fact that her parents are pained by her following her brother’s dark path to becoming a shifter. She doesn’t notice or care. The more evidence that is put in front of her that the other side might not be as evil as she thinks? That just makes her want to commit murder MORE.
Oh, and she DOES murder people. And try to murder more. A lot. She even successfully murders a fan-favorite character - a character who shows her mercy by pointing a gun at her, seeing she’s only a child, and opting to let her live. Gabi repays this mercy by shooting that character in the back later and boasting excitedly about it to anyone who will listen for multiple chapters in a row.
Tumblr media
She then tries to top that by attempting to murder that character’s little adopted sister, who is like, maybe 10 years old, tops? Gabi is then protected from harm by Mikasa and now seems to be on the path towards some kind of “redemption arc” because… uh…………..
………………..because Isayama is shitty?
By contrast, Eren struggles throughout the ENTIRE NARRATIVE to bring harm to people who betray him/those he cares about or those who try to kill him/those he cares about, but often runs into incredible challenges when fighting these douchenozzles. The entire time we followed Eren up until now, he always prioritized his family and friends above EVERYTHING. He would risk ANYTHING to protect them and his comrades in the Paradis military… this was true from when he was a young boy at the start of the story up through him being a young man at this point. And he is ESPECIALLY intense about protecting his closest friends, Armin and Mikasa, who he’s known for nearly his entire life. They grew up together.
That’s set in fucking stone for like 90 chapters, so we’re good. Yeah?
Oh, sweet summer child. Perhaps you were so unprepared for Isayama’s Nazi mallet that you didn’t see his secondary weapon coming?
Tumblr media
See, the post-timeskip Eren treats his friends like shit. He lies to them, betrays their trust, runs off and starts a literal war on his OWN, and then tells them how much he hates them. Claims he always hated them.
So in the course of just a couple chapters, he goes from saying this:
Tumblr media
To swiftly saying THIS:
Tumblr media
Note that devastated look in her eyes. Wonderful.
And yes, he’s GOT to be lying, because I don’t think Isayama would juxtapose those two scenes so closely together in some unwitting fashion. But he’s doing so much damage to them by now that I honestly don’t even know if it matters?
Take Hange.
She’s the intelligent leader of the team, the one who always has a wild, unlikely plan. She’s a science whiz and comes up with longshot plans that always seem to weirdly… work out.
We’re told that, three years ago, she was presented a plan to overthrow Marley by Zeke - a fucking bastard who is clearly a member of the enemy, he’s lived with them his whole life, as a child he betrayed his parents to them and had them executed for being disloyal to Marley, and he’s killed COUNTLESS comrades of our heroes - and Hange decided Zeke’s plan was the only possible option and came up with no alternatives for four years. So she made them ally up with the least trustworthy person IMAGINABLE for a terrible plan,b because Hange’s… a stupid sucker now, I guess.
And why is it a terrible plan — aside from the fact that there is literally zero reason to ever believe anything Zeke says to you, since he’s the most evil fucker in the world? Oh, because it hinges HEAVILY around forcing another member of the team — Historia — into a pregnancy to churn out a baby they intend to use for the country’s gain.
Historia’s big character arc in “Attack on Titan” has been her coming to terms with her own identity and OWNING it. She’s been hiding under another identity or been controlled by other people much of her life. She finally comes out under her true name, declares that she’ll never leave in fear or be maniuplated ever again, and then—
Tumblr media
… oh wait.. she’s manipulated into being barefoot and pregnant against her own wishes, because their greatest enemy asked for it.
Tumblr media
There’s a lot to hate about the post-”Return to Shinganshima” Attack on Titan, in short. From characters becoming inversions of themselves to full fanatical Nazis being treated like redemption babies to complete destruction of self-actualization of other characters and the fact that, even if this is part of some larger plan being manipulated by multiple players (which seems likely), it still won’t really make up for much of the damage… and for that matter, how plausible would it even be?
But basically, there’s going to have to be quite an 11th-hour ass-pull to make this turn out decently in my eyes by now. And that’s not IMPOSSIBLE.
But it’s looking pretty unlikely.

after that last anon you answered, i'm now curious about how you pace your stories! i'm usually a little too excited for all the things i want to happen, so i do a lot of skipping ahead and getting to the meat for a fast-paced story. but!! your space cowboy stories are SO GOOD and i know they wouldn't be the same with my kind of pacing, so yeah. i'm curious ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hi there, honey! :D *hugs*
Okay, this was another question I had to think about for a long time … I often conflate pacing and overall story structure, so fair warning, that is probably gonna happen here.
I’m going to start off with a fairly obvious fact, which is that different stories require different pacing, and that the rules in fanfiction, I find, are a little looser.
This is because we rarely need much exposition in fanfiction, since we’re assuming our readers already know these characters and these settings, so we don’t have to worry too much about explanations or descriptions. That being said, there is always some world-building (particularly in AUs), and that can be pretty challenging to insert without disrupting the … narrative flow, I guess?
There’s a sort of … ebb and flow, overall, to a story. There are quiet times and loud times. There’s talking and then there’s action. Now, the other reason why I say fanfiction is different is because I am perfectly happy reading a story that is literally just characters being domestic, or having emotional conversations (communication, I love it so much) or … every other fun trope in fandom.
I think the way I’ve always approached pacing is to fret about it in the planning stage. Once I start writing, I’m very character-focused, so my main concern is keeping everybody as in-character and “realistic” as possible, since I usually already have an outline with all the plot/emotional beats in place (written or up in my head). But pacing does come up at times even when I have most of the story planned, and I think the biggest indicator of a pacing issue is when you get stuck while writing.
Getting stuck isn’t always about that narrative flow — there are hundreds of reasons why I get writer’s block — but I have found that sometimes it’s because I’m writing something that’s disrupting the flow. Sometimes it’s a dialogue scene that runs too long, and characters are saying/explaining things that I could just show or summarize in a descriptive paragraph. Sometimes it’s a scene that’s totally redundant, period, and I scrap it entirely.
In other words, skipping ahead and getting to the meat is totally valid on occasion ;D
As for the space cowboys … *throws hands in the air* … Here’s a look as to how that mess got organized into a semi-coherent flow of words — massive, likely incoherent ramble under the cut!
Tumblr media
First off: a one-story example — The Six-Gun Sound.
That story has the most basic pacing ever. Action scene at the start, exposition/dialogue scene right after that sets up the main plot/motive for the characters, followed by a steady build that goes right into that heist. The heist then slowly builds until BAM. Everything goes wrong, there are literal explosions, and then a climax of both the main plot-line and the emotional plot-line. (There is pacing set for both of those when I plan, usually. The plot informs the emotional beats and vice versa, depending on which is more important at any given time.)
In shorter words: action, calm, build-up to more action, big action, calm, and then the resolution. That kind of “ebb and flow” is basically how most stories work, I believe. If you have that going on in your tales, then I think you’re golden :D
I totally break those rules in many of my other tales, but, yeah. There it is ;)
Now, secondly: the entire Trouble’s Making Everything All Right series.
That is just … well, a giant mess, but it’s one that I find works for me? I might be confusing pacing with other parts of narrative structure, but overall, there’s a certain ebb and flow that leads to the first huge climax (which I believe is Short Change Heroes). Um, I’m going to try and explain and hope that it helps you?
Trouble Coming is essentially my expositional story (though I initially had no idea how long this series would go). If, for example, in your own writing you feel like “skipping” all that establishing information, well, I’m gonna be horrible and give you that old cliché — show and don’t tell (much).
I still had to explain some stuff in that story, but having no Team Voltron, having Lance and Keith sitting around that poker table, cheating at cards (Keith), and flirting as a distraction (Lance), while being tough as nails, pretty much establishes that something not good has happened. Especially as Keith worries about making ends meet.
Following that, the attack afterwards, which they treat as business as usual, barely blinking at the deaths they cause … Again, I don’t think I needed to tell you guys that they had been through some bad stuff. And they were continuing to go through some bad stuff. I don’t actually explain much until more than halfway through the story, when they’re back at the inn and there’s a moment of calm. (Again, I’m not great at pacing, but I tried to put a bit of ebb and flow in this series as a whole.) (Action at the beginning, sort of, and then calm.)
Six Gun Sound is pretty much all action, and it retroactively explains partially how Lance and Keith came to be the way they are (and how they got together ;D), and since you’ve already seen how jaded and broken they are in Trouble Coming, I like to think it makes for a sharper, harsher contrast to see them more … good just as they cross that line into becoming The Two McClains. (Lots of action/emotional conflict.)
Following that action-filled, emotional story, we’ve got Broken Bone World, which jumps forward to the more jaded Lance and Keith, but this time, we get to see them relax and perfectly in love with each other — and generally more settled in their new mercenary existence. (More calm.)
And then, Shuffling Madness, back in the past, is lots of action, lots of suffering — I hoped that seeing them as Paladins after three stories as space cowboys would be quite impactful in hindsight? Basically, seeing them being so optimistic about their chances makes you wince on their behalf because you, as the reader, already know how they end up. (Plenty of action/emotional turmoil.)
This is the point where the series is actually building towards the main climax. I had hinted at Keegin Dras going all the way back to the first story. But Paradise City is where the tension, um, kicks up, I guess (some of y’all may remember that cliffhanger? Er, sorry?) (Build-up to lots of action with a sudden stop and cliffhanger.)
I really like contrast, so this is my own personal opinion/writing style, but, um, yeah, there you go.
Edit: Damn, I totally forgot to mention Heaven Above You, which was probably one of my favourites to write — it prolongs the tension between Paradise City and Short Change Heroes, but also, while it isn’t too heavy on the action, I think of it is as still tension building because it shows that defining moment when Lance chose to take a life that wasn’t a direct threat to him. It’s an almost purely expositional story, but it sets up the emotional conflict of Short Change Heroes, while Paradise City sets up the main plot conflict?(Bit of action, mostly calm, but lots of emotional turmoil.)
Short Change Heroes is a damn disaster, but it’s a disaster I kinda really loved writing. There are just so many conversations. It really shouldn’t have had that many dialogue scenes. Holy crap, that war council is a story in and of itself, and I am definitely not Tolkien, holy crap, no.
But, um, here’s where I contradict myself and say — I didn’t care about pacing, I just wanted to get these people (Team Voltron + The Two McClains) actually talking because communication rocks, and they absolutely would’ve wanted to talk a ton after a year apart.
I did try and chop up some of the dialogue/exposition with a few action-type scenes (the interrogation scene, then that gang ambush, and that brief attack during the war council), but those scenes were also key to the plot-line and the emotional stuff. I was focused on pacing when I chose where to place those scenes, so that things would feel balanced and move forward smoothly.
So, if in your own writing, you feel like you want to skip ahead, but you also feel like whatever information you need to impart (or interaction these characters need to have) is important to the plot/pacing (e.g. you need a quiet moment before battle or you need to show off an action scene before you can get to that juicy emotional resolution), find a way to make it fun for you to tell! I am a sucker for gritty honesty or sappy confessions or no-holds-barred arguing, so that’s how I handle some exposition. I love creating angsty situations instead of just explaining that someone’s had a bad time.
Basically, in summation: I try to keep action and moments of stillness somewhat balanced.
— A huge burst of action demands a longer moment of quiet/reflection, or a longer emotional conversation and/or resolution afterwards.
— A massive emotional fight/discussion demands that the characters either have time apart or some kind of quiet/temporary peace after (even if the fight isn’t resolved right away or the discussion hasn’t unloaded everything in their heads).
This is my preferred rhythm to story-telling, both on small (one story) or large (series) scales. This way a story doesn’t feel too stilted, or overly long (too many quiet moments?), or like it isn’t letting up/allowing the reader to settle (too many action moments?) — an even rhythm/flow carries the reader along easily (hopefully).
I break these rules of mine often, but this is a general rant ;D
I really, really hope this has helped you, that this hasn’t bored you to death, and that I haven’t been totally nonsensical. I am honestly not even sure I answered this question at this point — it kinda just turned into a freakishly long ramble. *sweats* Sorry!
You are very kind to ask, and I am so grateful to you! Best of luck with the writing, dear! *all the hugs*
