Not long after, some cattle were stolen from Euboea by Autolycus, and Eurytus supposed that it was done by Hercules; but Iphitus did not believe it and went to Hercules. And meeting him, as he came from Pherae after saving the dead Alcestis or Admetus, he invited him to seek the kine with him. Hercules promised to do so and entertained him; but going mad again he threw him from the walls of Tiryns.
Pseudo Apollodorus, Bibliotheca, 2.6.2
Iphitos, Herakles, and behind the scene of the murder: Iphitos gifting Odysseus with a bow, and then Odysseus, alone.
okay, so I quoted Apollodorus first, but what actually intrigues me about it is how it goes against a general narrative by making it seem like the act was against his will

Herakles and Omphale, Elmer G. Suhr
I'm also fascinated Odysseus' in this moment of the arc, with rituals of friendships cut short and paths diverging where they might have otherwise continued along side each other. there is a tragedy and intimacy of it and the role it plays in the Odyssey that gets to me. Odysseus strings his bow and its a kind of crescendo of several different threads coming together!! and underneath it all, inescapable, Iphitos. everything's interconnected! we're all made up of the people we met along whichever roads we take!!

thinking about how much grace and simon needed each other when they met and how desperately they enabled one another to just stay the same and get worse, and the moment one of them learns a little self-respect and wants to change for the better it ruins everything that ‘we had’.. grace needed someone to look at her and simon was so willing to look at her until he saw things that he didn’t like, things that threatened the incidental and flimsy mistruth grace came up with when they were kids, out of fear, out of a need to be looked at, a need to be loved; and grace cannot conceptualise being loved without being the best. you… saved me. oh, yeah.. i did. i’m, like, really good at the train. two insecure and self-loathing kids who needed to be loved and could not fathom being loved without doing something or being something or having something, having someone. their entire relationship is just like.. it’s so tragic. makes me sick in my little baby tummy like what the hell. mfw the tragedy book is a tragedy

Anyway I think about this specific part of ashfic so often that it is a problem and I need therapy
His eyes slip closed again. The ambient sound of the air conditioning rattles throughout the room and he lets himself focus on that, rather than the dull pain in his side. He’s almost fallen asleep when he feels something warm brush over his hair. “You ‘an stay,” he murmurs and the warmth leaves. When he opens his eyes again, he’s alone.
LISTEN the appeal of pre-relationship varigo is two souls who are longing for each other but don't know it yet. Hugo leaves because he thinks he's not wanted. Varian is brave enough to ask him how to stay, but doesn't have the vocabulary yet to convince Hugo.
THEY LOVE EACH OTHER BUT DON'T KNOW IT YET
