On the topic of folks getting worked up over you reblogging things with commentary: i think general failure to learn to blend is a contributing factor, but I think another is that interaction on pretty much all social media is so *same-y* now... except tumblr.
You like, you comment, but if you retweet/share/whatever it's called on tiktok or whatever, you either a) do it without commentary in support or to spread a message, or b) you're dunking on the OP, usually not looking for discussion. Discussion happens in the comments, not on your own page - I feel like the kids, used to *those* social norms and having not bothered to learn the ones of tumblr (and possibly not even realizing that there are different norms) are kind of interpreting it as... like, dragging a discussion from their ground onto yours, trying to shift the home advantage.
And they're wrong, you're just interacting in a way that's normal and expected on tumblr, but there's I think a degree of not understanding that sites *can* be different in that way, especially since Tumblr does have a lot of the same superficial markers (likes, comments, an algorithm (even though it's optional). When I started online, and I presume when you did too, every site had its own set-up for how you interacted with other users - a guest book, an irc chat, a forum with threads that may or may not have been strictly enforced, a yahoo group mailing list... You never really knew your first time on a site how you talked to other users, so you *had* to watch, you had to see what this site's mode was, and how strictly it was enforced.
And the superficial similarities between tumblr and other social media is sort of giving the tiktokers the feeling that tumblr is tiktok but with words and they can treat it exactly the same. And i think you're being very clear every time you reblog one of them about what the culture and normal mode of interaction is, but i think it's also going to keep running up against all of their existing internet experience, as well as native human stubborness, especially since you're typically disagreeing on the OP about something.
^Hitting the nail on the head. This is why I keep posting links to Tumblr help/user guides and telling these kiddos to open up their blog settings.
If you have come to Tumblr from elsewhere, it's on you to learn about how to use this site and what appropriate behavior is -here-

Hello, very occasional IRC user seeking advice from a veteran IRC user. I use irssi because it works and it's what I downloaded one time years ago. But I find the navigation clunky and it doesn't seem to be very actively maintained anymore. Is there an IRC client you use/recommend?
If you like the terminal aspect of irssi but want an upgrade the standard move is Weechat, which is what I use. It's got all the things you'd expect from an IRC client with pretty easy configuration and a nice suite of plugins. This is an old screenshot off my blog because I'm at work and they probably won't appreciate me posting a screenshot of my work chat.
Tumblr media
It also has solid mouse support that runs in the terminal, you can enable it and then just click on channels and nicks and even click and drag to rearrange channels in the channel list or use the scroll wheel to scroll the channel.
The main weakness of Weechat is the kind of bizzare and difficult to navigate documentation website but once you figure it out it's not that bad, and most of the time you can just `/fset *whatever*` to search the settings for whatever.
If you're running Weechat on a server there's even a nice relay protocol that you can use to get access to your chat session from a phone, or from any browser using GlowingBear.
Tumblr media
If you want something with a GUI, the last thing I used was HexChat years ago, which is fine but nothing special. It's mostly a continuation of the mIRC style. If I was going to pick one now it'd probably be Quassel, mostly because you can still run it in a client/server mode for persistence but it's a perfectly cromulent local client.

observations on the future of social media in regards to P2P and Blockchains and decentralized protocols in general ie nostr/iris, bluesky etc, what it means in Threads, Tumblr and Twitter/X's case and what it means to us as users
prefacing this with I'm just a person with access to google and a hefty amount of curiosity and a layman's understanding of the subjects so I will most likely be wrong about a couple things but I just wanted to write this to get a discussion going in a public space about what these social medias mean for the future of the internet and what I think their goals are and also to just get my thoughts in order
P2P in the simplest of terms is how torrenting works, it is peer 2 peer sharing of information ie computer 2 computer, so for example if you download something sent to you by a person from google drive its person > google servers > you, however if you torrent somethings its person > you (well in actuality its Multiple people> you and that's what seeding is but I am keeping it simple for my own sake) So in my quest to find a way to p2p stream things directly from a computer to another computer not on the same network on github, I've found that a huge amount of research has been done in general on P2P implementation beyond just media sharing in the last couple of years
and subsequently I fell down a rabbit hole of P2P social media, so what that means is imagine a social media without a middle man or a direct company. Twitter right now works as such, person tweets > passes through twitter servers > you access their tweet as shown to you through the twitter servers this mode of information sharing requires physical servers to store this data on, most companies don't own their own servers but instead rent them, usually from amazon or google, and twitter is the same, in fact almost everything on the internet is hosted through amazon servers and they have intense monopoly worldwide (x) (x)
this is partially how countries can exert their laws on these social media companies
P2P makes all of this obsolete, reduces the overhead cost of servers and takes them out of the equation, the sharing of information will be pingponged through multiple computers instead of passed through one large middle man that can be prosecuted and contacted for hosting/platforming this data. personally I am very excited about the development of P2P technology however, this form of decentralized social media isn't new people have been experimenting with it since 2012 and the early internet ran on p2p (IRC), but the biggest difference now is that people have combined it with blockchains (bitcoin) (W3C ie Web.3 consortium pretentious name I know) and this brings me to the current Big Fish battle that is happening right now between IRIS(NOSTR)/Blusky and Threads, Twitter
So starting with IRIS, most people have probably not heard of IRIS but what IRIS is, is a p2p social media running on a protocol called NOSTR, ELI5 protocols are just Ways of doing things/sharing information/guidelines, ie emails are just a protocol called SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) that companies can build things around ex: gmail, runs on SMTP protocol I stumbled on the ex CEO of twitter Jack Dorsey on IRIS and a couple things struck me first scrolling through the site and his account. first even though Jack Dorsey is on the board of directors for bluesky and helped in its development he more so wants NOSTR protocol and IRIS to succeed and seems to be pushing them more heavily even on his twitter secondly the little dollar amount tied to every post he makes,
Tumblr media
this literary banger is apparently worth a dollar and a half in "Zap Coins" this leads me to speculate on the future of bluesky because to me it seems like IRIS is being used as a testing ground for bluesky, bluesky currently DOESNT have bitcoin tied to its posts like nostr does but it does have the groundworks laid in in its protocol! I offhandedly mentioned previously that social medias are combining P2P and blockchain this time around and thats exactly what is happening in IRIS and what bluesky seems to be working towards, now what does this mean in IRIS's case? well from my understanding is that creating accounts on IRIS is exactly like creating a crypto wallet, in that your account will have its own unique generated hash encrypted number and every post you make is like making a transaction in the blockchain ie it has its own hash attached to it hence every post you make has a monetary value pros > makes you hard to find, posts are decentralized and spread over multiple computers worldwide and encrypted >can make as many accounts as you want no need for verification you just need to remember the unique hash attached to them >no servers hosting your information governments and companies have less control cons (to me anyways lol) >monetized posts >the power balance gets shifted from companies and goverments to ISP's and their abilities to connect you to other computers worldwide >nothing can ever actually be deleted its all recorded, you can orphan posts from your account I think? but they will still be findable
what does this mean in Blue sky's case?
Well starting with the differences, Bluesky is NOT p2p it is running on its own self made "decentralized" protocol called ATP (@ protocol) it is very theoretical and doesn't have any actual implementation anywhere as opposed to NOSTR and other protocols that twitter and tumblr run on I read through it and looked up some things but I genuinely don't understand how its supposed to be decentralized especially with how it seems to be implemented in actuality, so currently bluesky has frequent outages and is slow to use, if it were decentralized these things shouldn't be affecting everyone? so from my understanding it says that everyone has their own server PDS (personal direct server) that will host their posts and that it all PDS will be connected via a crawler which will siphon that information to an app, which I GUESS is decentralized but what does PDS mean in this case? signing up to bluesky is most definitely not hosting your own server with your own posts, you are putting these posts on a server somewhere, but who is it owned by? I read some articles saying that bluesky is starting out by hosting their own servers for you in that case they've just invented twitter 2 but with more flexibility in regards to third party implementation anyways rant aside, the similarities, while iris isnt the same as bluesky, bluesky's philosophy seems to be in a similar vain to iris and blue sky is following iris' steps closely, while iris isn't owned by one single entity, blue sky board of directors want to make some cash money and I assume thats why they didnt fully lean into p2p
like I mentioned before Blue Sky's protocol has the capabilities for bitcoin integration baked into it (x) I dont know if they will try to monetize the posts in the same way directly in bluesky as is done in IRIS but the ATP is very flexible and what that means is that they can create a different monetary based app that you don't even need to sign up for you'd just use your bluesky credentials and you'd have a crypto wallet tied to your blue sky account because your ID isn't tied to just blue sky, its tied to anything running the ATP protocol
sound familiar? this is what Elon musk is trying to do with Twitter rn and this is basically where he got the idea, he wants to make twitter the one stop shop app for everything, but this isn't a fantasy unattainable idea this is coming directly from the protocols IRIS and Bluesky use, and I will not be surprised if in the near future we see him attempt to integrate bitcoin into twitter
Twitter, Threads and Tumblr (triple T haha 3T if you will) are all going to try and compete with Bluesky and Iris because ~money~, but they are doing so with.... *drum rolls* Mastedon! the dark horse or more accurately the protocol that Mastedon uses which is called ActivityPUB, Activitypub is older than both NOSTR and ATP and has a history of a wide range of implementation, however if you've ever used Mastodon you'd know its very limited in its capabilities when it comes to social media
Tumblr media
This is basically I theorize/speculate is one of the reasons tumblr changed its looks, they are trying to standardize social media between all 3 of them and basically build bridges between each other so as to combat IRIS and BlueSky This is not to say they will become like Mastedon however, in fact between Threads which has a huge amount of money to throw at inventing things and polishing the Activepub protocol and Automattic which owns tumblr and has owned wordpress for even longer who have a familiarity with blogging platforms and multi integration across multiple platforms I think they can be strong competitors
dont ask me what twitter is doing, I am not even certain it will integrate activitypub 100% I just think thats the easiest and fastest way to try and achieve elon's goals and threads and tumblr are combining
so what does it mean exactly when these sites say they will use ActivityPub?
it just means that they are trying to build bridges between each other, that is very vague and obscure of course because idk how they will go about it, the most basic way is post sharing between sites will change and become easier but its not limited to just that, IDK if they will even change the sites themselves instead of just building addons but tumblr's aesthetic change makes me think that they will
more importantly what does this mean for us Users?
well if you've read this far, I just want to emphasize that this isn't something to doom about, while I don't support crypto 100% I think the next wave of social media is headed in a good direction in that people are Finally focusing on decentralizations, social media that isn't under the thumb of one company or hosted on one single server (tumblr servers for example ALLEGEDLY were hosted on one amazon server without backup x) we are finally moving in a direction that is more open as I listed in the pros section above when it comes to IRIS I personally think those ones are worth the cons, however I want people to understand when they are joining bluesky, threads etc the conversation isn't about what these websites are good at NOW, you are NOT joining a twitter copy, all the social medias are gearing up to move away into a new era of internet, it may look the same but under the hood their goals are different, as far as I can tell every social media's goals are focused on 3 things currently >decentralization (lowering their costs in moderation, hosting etc) >getting money, alot of money as fast as possible (crypto integration, selling your data) >beating their competition and surviving as the big fish (protocols are duking it out iris/bluesky vs the world)
like I said at the start of this post I am just a layman with a keyboard, these are just observations I've made, and I could be wrong about multiple things here! but either way, curious about where we are headed

ok unrelated to all of this drama i have actually wondered - do you 100% identify as a cis man now? do you still feel dysphoric? hot to think abt you getting euphoric over being hard and masculinized <3
I'm going to be up front that when I began my transition decades ago, there was a significant number of people, myself among them, who felt that "dysphoria" was bullshit made up by therapists that we rolled with because we couldn't get hormones otherwise. Those who believed in it were considered to be "trannier-than-thou" drama queens, up there with people falsely claiming intersex identity to legitimise their desire to transition with an overly-medical mode of viewing their own transitions. This was not considered to be a healthy tendency. These were people cripplingly dependant on the approval of doctors to the point of dramatically warping their own self-concept into severe levels of victimhood, and they were always the people driven into inconsolable emotional fits on the IRC servers and support group forums.
Of course as tumblr took over later on, and had almost no cultural continuity with people who were trans before tumblr (and somewhat rightly so; the ones I had been talking to weren't really people who had any business being around tumblr's younger crowd, or being around me for that matter.*) this view shifted dramatically. The younger, impressionable tumblr trannies took dysphoria much more seriously. But I still clung to the old view on this.
As such, I have never considered "dysphoria" to be a crucial part of my life. There was a very brief period where my beard growing in made my stomach a little unsettled, but I looked myself in the mirror (so to speak -- don't currently have a mirror, too poor) and said listen me, we don't do that anymore. And because I take myself seriously as a self-possessed adult able to make decisions and stand by them for my own good, I listened to myself and that was the end of it. As an adult sometimes you have to understand that not every idea you took on as a teenager is good, and letting it go is a fundamental life skill. And the older and more knowledgeable we get, the more informed we can be with that decision.
*(it should be noted these were online communities which were generally older, white, USAmerican, and of an income level somewhat above the median for that country. their relation to other elements and demographics of the trans community was virtually none. i'm not trying to make any comment about say drag houses in new york, or other communities in other parts of the world, etc. just that the online communities I was around were not good.)

well just to correct the record here a bit for younger readers, this isnt true at all, homestuck is extremely representative of the themes and more strongly the general tones that were in the Posting Zeitgeist of the time, particularly if you were on Something Awful, the Penny Arcade forums, and/or ebaum's world. juggalo memes and jokes were an entire genre of internet humor during the turn of the century, even before the "fuckin magnets, how do they work" cultural moment. "Miracles" was a revivification of Insane Clown Posse, they already had an established presence in internet memes and in subcultural exchange before that. in fact there was a clown-based (not ICP) forum game webcomic CYOA on something awful in 2008 that predated Homestuck (2009) (but not Problem Sleuth) called Dropsy the Clown, which was later turned into an actual adventure game. my citation is that im listed in the credits of Dropsy the Clown three different times for some reason having to do with the Kickstarter (i am also an art contributor to Hypnospace Outlaw by the same creator :))) )
one of the aspects of Homestuck that's easy to miss if you're younger than about 40 is how it was a perfect reflection of actual and not nostalgic/fictional forums and internet culture and modes of communication that existed just prior to when the comic started. Hussie was writing about what elder millennials experienced at the turn of the century. Pesterchum is a pastiche of IRC, AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ, which by the time the comic was being made, we had already stopped using (i mean we still "use" IRC, either if youre gen x or if you know the Twitch chat backend is built on top of it, etc, but you know what i mean).
homestuck was already a nostalgia piece when it was being published, but you just wouldn't be aware of this unless you were around Hussie's age or older. he was born in 1979, just to make that clear. he's a good bit older even than I am. it's a testament to the evocative and communicative features of his work that Homestuck resonated so strongly with younger millennials and older zoomers, because the entire basis of its format and storytelling was of an internet that no longer existed and had never been experienced by the largest portion of his fanbase.
Homestuck was absolutely complete disaster of a narrative in a lot of ways by the end but I hate it when people act like homestuck is, like Vivziepop Type Bad. For whatever critiques you can make of homestuck it being shallow or creatively bankrupt are just not accurate ones and it drives me up a wall to see people who have never read it act like it's just kind of a substanceless relic of outdated internet humor and fandom cringe. It's crazy how many people are willing to sing praises for shit that's downwind of homestuck like deltarune (and chapter 4 is by far the most homestuck deltatune has ever been by a significant margin) while also being able to completely write off the idea that homestuck has anything worth engaging with in it.

In Distributed FAQ, Matt Mullenweg addresses some of the most common issues companies, executives, and individuals face as they consider transitioning to a distributed model. Q. Automattic is known for using internal blogs called P2s for most work-related conversations. How and why did that happen? A. you know what would be a legendary april fools joke?
discord turns on light mode for the whole day, and you can't turn it off.
it should be tied to local time too, so while australia goes back to dark mode, america's still on light mode.
maybe then everyone will go back to IRC

IM, IRC, email clients all had a big "connect" button. laptops had physical switches to disengage the WiFi/Bluetooth/cell antennas. singleplayer gamemodes didn't require an active internet connection. web browsers had an offline mode/disconnect button.
internet-enabled features aren't inherently bad but my messaging software shouldn't be unusable when the network drops. you cached my immediate DM history, why can't I view it ??? it also shouldn't be a stripped-down web browser but that's an adjacent issue
I believe everything should be offline, I believe that every time something that is not your internet browser (and I'm being generous here) should have a big red alert that says THIS PIECE OF SHIT PROGRAM NEEDS TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET AND REQUESTS YOUR CONSENT TO DO THIS SPECIFIC THING, and you had to touch a big red button and it would disconnect as soon as you close it.

After some irritation, on a day where I am already incredibly irritable:
If you're using IRC, and you see mode changes like "-!- mode/#foobar [+o :baz] by Wibble" (Spot the colon in front of the `baz` nick argument) and check the nicklist only to see that baz doesn't appear to be a channel op:
Your client does not support IRCv3-compatible escaped messages
IRCv3 is an update to the IRC protocol and does things slightly differently. Your client doesn’t support it, and some functionality may appear to be broken, though basic comm
Colon-prefixed arguments to mode changes, etc, are to allow for tagged messages in the newest version of the IRC protocol, which is a Big Deal.
(The irritation is brought to you by github commenters whose response to “hey, I’m filing a bug because this shit looks weird to me and I’ve never seen it before in my two decades of using IRC” is solely “it’s standards compliant, get a better client”.
This is agonisingly unhelpful, and I want them all to fall into the Pit Of Painful Self-Reflection until they realise what a stupid condescending sack of shit they’ve been.)

Also going back to the Usenet/AOL era of X-Files shipping, generally Shipper, in the context of fandom discussions, meant MSR (Mulder/Scully romance) by default. If you were into a different ship, you had to specify, and if it was F/F or M/M (Mulder/Skinner for example), it was slash. Mulder/Skinner slash, or Scully/Any Other Woman slash (OC or not), whatever - it was slash, and you were into whatever/whatever slash.
Antis were called NoRoMos, short for No Romance, and this phrase too pertained specifically to anti-MSR. That being said, the level of hate over ship rivalry (or much of any rivalry) wasn't seen in fandom to near the degree it is in current fandom. (Save for the Joel vs Mike fights in the MST3K fandom, but that wasn't any sort of ship wank at the time, and it's also another matter ENTIRELY.)
There was definitely an X-Files shipper vs NoRoMo rivalry, and definitely some heated arguments, and Shippers would go NUTS when we knew an upcoming episode was written by Vince Gilligan (yes THAT Vince Gilligan) because he was infamous for dishing both hilarity (X-Cops, Unusual Suspects) and the shippiest shippy episodes that ever shipped with ALL the UST (Pusher, Small Potatoes), and some beautiful unholy hybrids thereof (Bad Blood), and the NoRoMos never knew if they were gonna get either extreme or just something really cool in the middle.
I don't recall seeing suicide bait and threats against fic authors from NoRoMos being the norm or even common though, and here's why:
The threats (not suicide bait, but definitely nasty-grams from corporate lawyers and "delete your page or else" type threats) were all coming from Fox, and they were leveled equally at all corners of fandom, trying to shut ALL of us up and all of us down.
We didn't have AO3, we had the Gossamer Archive, dedicated exclusively to all types of XF fanfic. It got takedown notices and DDOS attacks on the regular. So did X-Files fan pages on GeoCities and AOL Member sites and whatnot - fanfic, fan art, digital art, fan-run forum sites - forget the opposing shipper, Fox was the ultimate Anti. Anti their own fans celebrating what we loved, no matter what form we did it in.
So yeah, you had situations were a fan would panic over Fox's latest escapade in sending out copyright bullshit C&D letters to fan sites and fic archives, a person would frantically try and mirror a site before Fox could take it down, so a well meaning fan would accidentally DDOS the site they were trying to save and it created artifical strife within the fandom.
This shit runs deep. We used to hide huddled by faction in small scattered corners of the internet (AOL message boards, email listserves, IRC channels) or bonded together in large numbers, proudly and shamelessly as one fandom (Gossamer, a.t.x-f/a.t.x-f.c) that occasionally gave each other noogies, but dammit we're all in this together, waiting for the hand of the overlords to bring down its next bullshit copyright C&D flyswatter against a fic writer or an artist or a digital collage photoshopper or whatever, so we put blue EFF ribbons on our pages, and we used HTML to black out our fansites in protest long before Dark Mode was ever a twinkle in Agent Mulder's TrustNo1 eye, and we organized counter campaigns to advocate for the right of fandom itself to exist.
Shipper wars? Oh no. We've got bigger fish to fry. Fandom will live on, dammit. You can come for us, you can TRY, but not today CSM Satan, not today.
Edit to add: Ya know, this is weirdly/hilariously similar to both the Mirror Universe as it's presented in Discovery, and the quasi-mirror Q-niverse in Picard, where all these different, normally-warring species and factions had banded together to form a rebellion against the Terrans. Fox was the Terrans. That's kinda how things tend to work socially and historically - the enemy of my enemy, etc - but seeing it play out in fandom space is the ultimate trope of life and art imitating one another.
every few months some annoying motherfucker makes a post asking why it's called 'spirk' instead of 'spork' or 'kock' and the short, easy answer is: spirk is already the silly ship name, the og ship name is 'k/s' and the og og ship name is 'the premise', because spirk is a ship so old that it was around before ship names were invented. now never come into my house again.
