"He's different around his friends." Believe that version of him. Why is he keeping friends with people who are fundamentally different than him? He's not. He wants to impress those boys/men and be accepted by them, so clearly he aligns with their values. Also, consider that that's who he is when he feels protected. If he's a rude, disrespectful asshole when he's with his friends then that's because he feels safe being who he truly is in a group of people he feels will protect him (or at the very least go down with him) if things go south. Men are never more of themselves then when they're with other men. A man who is truly nice will not suddenly be an asshole around his friends. A man who is truly nice would not hang out with people he feels the need to be mean around to impress. Believe who he is when he's with his friends.

           Ven didn’t recognize the ghost.  Not really.  He knew his memory was questionable at best, but he still couldn’t recall ever meeting a white-haired boy with a red scarf—at least, not from his time with Master Eraqus.  Still, his heart ached as he stared at the other boy.

           The stranger gave him a sad sort of smile.  “Hey, Ven.”

           “You know me?”

           “Yeah.”  The stranger laughed and rubbed the back of his head, but it was a sad sort of thing.  “But I guess maybe you don’t remember that.”

           It was with a bitter sort of realization that Ven said, “You’re from my past.  Before Xehanort.”

           The boy gave him an apologetic look.  “Yeah.”

           Ven took a breath, closed his eyes, and tried to steady himself.  He…guessed it shouldn’t surprise him, really, that he’d eventually run into someone from his long-forgotten past.  He supposed a dream was certainly the most fitting place to do so.

           “Do you know where this is?” Ven asked, finally, because he certainly didn’t recognize it—a wide-open stretch of water, as far as the eye could see.

           “It’s not anywhere you’d know,” the boy said, giving him a reassuring look, like he knew where Ven’s mind had gone.  “It’s called the Final World—a place for hearts to rest if they’re not quite ready to move on.”

           Oh.  “You’re…dead?”

           Another apologetic look.  “For a long time.  Yeah.”

           A breath.  Careful, steadying.  “It’s okay,” he said, even if it wasn’t.  “I’m—”

           (The person I used to be is dead, too.)

           The words cut off, and died, because Ven wasn’t sure he knew how to say that—not to this familiar stranger, who was looking at him with a bittersweet expression.  So instead, he asked, “Do you want to fill me in?  On everything I forgot, I mean.”

           The ghost gave him a real smile, this time.  “Sure.”  After a hesitant moment, he stuck out a hand.  “I’m Ephemer.  It’s nice to meet you again, Ventus.”

           With an uncertain smile, Ven accepted the handshake.  “Call me Ven.”
