Once again, a round of applause for Mr. Lever. You will see an obscure photo of Vessel and II if you click that link, fyi. I actually can't find Vessel, but II and George are def in it, and a friend says Vessel is too. For obvious reasons, I did not include the photo while formatting this post.

Prelude

Working with Sleep Token is always a pleasure. I get this deep seated selfish enjoyment when we start new projects, mainly because I’m safe in the knowledge that the experience is going to be beautifully intense and incredibly rewarding.

Tracking

We started working on ‘Two’ just before winter started in 2016. Working on maturing the structure and fleshing out tones. Its no surprise that when it came to the final tracking that we changed the sonic balance almost completely (this is a running theme by the looks of things) Time restrictions led to us using programmed drums, however we took samples of the real kit to sequence so that it didn’t ‘feel’ completely robotic or lost. Guitars last time around resulted on leaning on my Kemper, however this time we used a live amp and cab for the majority, the momentum from the tubes / movement of the cab is something I’ve had to accept is difficult to recreate ITB. Its easier just to go down the most direct route. I had recently purchased a one of a kind Randall modded amp from a friend in the states. It turns out its an early prototype from when Fortin partnered up with Randall, its not a looker but its a box of pure filth. The Fortin was fed into my Mesa OS, placed an SM57 on the cap joint of the cone and off we went, pretty straight forward really! Bass is a hybrid setup between two real basses and then a 3rd lane of audio from a programmed bass. Because of the way the song’s have been written, keeping the sub lows consistent is vital to ensuring the song flows without feeling disjointed section to section / genre to genre. Vocals is where the most change happened (from a tracking perspective). Originally we had finished and finalised everything with my go-to setup. Modded Oktava > Germanium Chandler > Empirical Labs Distressor. And for the most part it worked. However halfway through the process I bought a Slate VMS. A modelling microphone. Without going into too much detail, its a microphone that can imitate more expensive vintage setups and it does it without any issue whatsoever. Obviously when testing it out and comparing, the VMS won without breaking a sweat. So back to tracking all the vocals again. (The vocalist is amazing however, the repeat performances were just as good, if not better than the original final takes)

Mixing

Everything with Sleep Token (from a mix perspective) is orientated around the vocal. The vocal here is god and attempting to get the mix to flow any other way would have been very strange indeed. Sleep Token were very clear and concise about the structure for the mix, Vocals, Samples, Drums then everything else equal after the fact. Very much like how pop is built actually. It turned out to be the most happily balanced mix I’ve worked on. I expected to have a harder time balancing moving between a few different genres through out the track but in all honesty, it just worked. Which in itself is testament to the quality of the song writing. We worked on a few different ‘perspectives’ for the mixes, however in all honesty. The mixes came together with very little effort and the tracking stage defined a lot of the movements that would happen later down the line.

What's your worst injury that you're comfortable sharing?

Worst injury, eh? Hmm.

I've had my share of stupidity, but I can think of two big blunders.

Not a direct injury, but did result in damage was my ITB in my left leg. Strained it, didn't know it was later inflamed, and caused permanent damage to it that physical therapy can't help.

The second was from when I was learning to shave when I cared about beauty standards as an insecure child. I didn't like the baby razor I was given and used my mother's razor. All was well until the razor slipped in my hand and I cut my ankle. Got a nice scar from that one.

If we want to consider a third, my heart. With a mix of anxiety, physically intense labor, and a family with a history of heart problems, I developed IST which is not the absolute worst, but is fucking awful still.

Outfitnya jg ngga ada yg beli, aku pikirin bgt baju matching yg aku punya dan si calon punya. Nemu deh 3 outfit. Hitam adalah warna paling aman dan siapa yg gapunya warna hitam yekan~

NIKAH! Ini moment paling life changing bgt, termasuk look aku. Jadi ratu sehari kapan lg? Sekali seumur hidup. Walaupun MUA jg rekanan, baju pengantin jg rekomen WO nya tp tetep kita nyari2 yg mantes dong. Saat itu lg hype warna pastel untuk bride sampe bosen emg haha. Kalo akad pgn nyobain pake siger sunda, kacumponan. Jas pengantin si calon beneran h- beberapa hari ganti krn krg puas, nyari ke tempat lain dan alhamdulillah nemu. Fiuh~ bnyk drama memang. Recess Week: Heading futher South - A field trip to Indonesia

Now I've got one more cool passport stamp!

A couple months ago when I was still scrolling through NTU course database, a course "CH4245: Case Studies for Chemical and Biomedical Engineers" caught my eye in a second. In this course, students get to learn about various methods for root cause analysis, interact with industries and work with school partners from Indonesia and Taiwan. Unfortunately, I wasn't successfully enrolled in the class, but the professor was extremely understanding when I expressed my interest to participate in the class. I was able to work on case study problems with a group, and go on with the class to West Java, Indonesia as well!

Bandung

There were NO TRAFFIC LIGHTS in this city despite the busy traffic. For real, at least around the area I stayed in for 2 days. We landed in Jakarta on March 2nd and headed straight to Bandung for a visit to our partner school, ITB, the next day (it was a nearly 3-hour car ride). We wandered on the streets of Bandung VERY CAREFULLY to look around and get some local snacks such as shrimp and fish crackers, Tempe (fermented soybeans) Chips and a mix of colorful candies I can't even name. Soon, I found that it wasn't that difficult to cross the road without traffic lights - simply slow down and look to your left and right, and the cars will slow down as well. Though arguably, it might still be safer to have traffic lights...

ITB is absolutely beautiful as we got to see local architecture of Indoensia. From what my classmates said, the campuses gave out a "chill vibe" with students strolling along the hallway, while Singaporean students seem to live a faster-paced life. We were lucky to visit both ITB campuses in Bandung (they were an hour away from each other) and saw their chemical engineering and bioengineering labs, knew more about their campus facilities, and most importantly, mingled with students we've been working in-person!

Last day in Bandung was truly a blessing. We went up to Tangkuban Parahu to see the volcano. I knew that volcano hiking was extremely popular in East Java, but I was shocked to actually see such a spectacular volcano in West Java! There was also a Forest Park where we got to enjoy perfect forest views, fed animals (horses, sheep, goats) and had fun playing mini golf and zipline.

Jakarta

We hopped on another 3-hour car ride to Jakarta in the evening. As the previous capital in Indonesia, the city was SUPER busy and crowded, and most part of the roads didn't have traffic lights either (WHAT!?). Unlike Bandung where basically you could only see cars and motorbikes, there were public transportation in Jakarta such as buses and MRT. Walking on the streets at night after dinner, I could feel how bustling the city was when surrounded by a bunch of vehicles, fancy malls and honking sounds from cars.

Reflection

I'd love to say that our passport is the best textbook. Carrying the passport and embark on a journey outside of where we usually live, we are learning everywhere we go. From reading menu in local languages, to understanding the cultures and religions of the country, we learn to respect the differences while having fun trying new things. I am really thankful for the opportunity of going on this adventure!

Towards the peak of creativity: Denny Ja and Indonesian painting innovation

Painting is a form of creativity that has become an inseparable part of Indonesian culture. Along with the times, painting also underwent changes and innovations. One of the figures who has contributed to lifting Indonesian painting to a higher level is Denny JA. Sebagai pegiat kehewanan, ke penangkaran rusa tuh menjadi cita-cita sejak lama dan akhirnya tercapai di cuti perdana kemarin wkwkw. Sebelum memorinya semakin hilang, akan berceritaa (sekalian mengasah rutinitasku yang dulu selalu menceritakan liburan 😌)

Pre-trip

Berangkat dari Malang naik bus bersama Chipi. Anyway, rasanya kayak udah lama banget bepergian jarak jauh bareng orang WKWK. Asli, dari dulu bolak-balik Jakarta dan pergi ke tempat-tempat jauh selalu sendirian.... jadi lumayan kagok juga kalo ada temennya.

Kita berangkat siang dan sampe di Bandung subuh. Sepanjang jalan dihabiskan buat tidur, nonton film, hpan, tidur. Cipik kuat banget sepanjang jalan habis 3 film anjrit meanwhile aku baru duduk di busnya aja udah langsung hilang kesadaran.

Day one

Sampe di Bandung kan subuh ya, kita langsung pesen taksi online buat ke penginapan transit. Karena cuma buat transit doang, jadi mesen kamar yang emang low budget. Pas sampe shock, anjrit low budget sih iya tp kamarnya BENER2 NO SPACE. Ngga sempet ngefoto tapi sebagai penggambaran antara kasur bunk bed dan temboknya spacenya cuma satu orang berukuran medium, makan tuh claustrophobic.

Sampe di penginapannya langsung beres-beres dan mandi sebelum kita berkeliling bertamasya di Bandung Ria. Aku di daily life kan procrastinating parah ya, tapi kalo udah Novia versi liburan kemudian beurbah menjadi titisan Hitler. Super strict dan bertugas sebagai pengoprak-oprak warga. Cipik bener-bener aku pecut agar bergerak cepat dan sesuai timeline.

Setengah hari pertama di Bandung kita habiskan untuk wiskul.

First stop adalah bubur ayam Kang Dedi Sudirman. Dang dia porsinya BANYAK BGT sampe topping dan buburnya tuh dipisah wkwkw. Enak kok, cuma ayamnya tuh sangat ayam???

Second stop kita ke Nasi Kuning Bulak Sumur. Jauh ye nyebrang ke daerah ITB. Mayan enak juga dan kalo kesiangan dikit udah ramai dengan mahasiswa. ANYWAY special shout out tuh buat teh di Bandung. ENAKNYA BGTTT. Mana kalo makan tuh sering dikasih tehnya gratis! Asli tiap food hopping gitu biasanya dikasi teh panas dan tehnya konsisten enak terus.

Lanjut kita membakar kalori sarapan tadi dengan jalan-jalan ke Baksil. Pokoknya tiap aku ke Bandung pasti halan-halan ke hutan kotanya. Bagus-bagussss dan well maintained ih seneng. Cipik yang awalnya semangat lama-lama rada shock n mengomel waktu tau jalannya panjang uga WKWKWK. Rasanya bubur dan naskun itu menguap begitu saja. Aku tuh dulu pernah ya ke Baksil sendirian malah, tp kayanya dulu ga sejauh ini jalannya.... *ngesot

Habis terseok-seok di Baksil akhirnya kita ngadem ke kafenya Jurnal Risa deket situ sambil mencari destinasi selanjutnya. Karena itu masih super pagi dan dia baru buka jadinya cuma pesen minum aja dan kita melanjutkan trip ke Ciwalk.

Di Ciwalk Cipi tuh mencari semacam makanan Jepang yang olahan green teanya terlihat tempting. Udah siang tuh udah panas ya kita memutuskan untuk maksi batagor dan cuanki. Sebagai wisatawan, tentu tidak afdhol kalau tidak memilih tempat yang paling mainstream yaitu ✨serayu✨

Bad luck strike entah ke berapa lah per-hari itu tapi waktu kesana dia belum buka dan kita harus ke cabangnya yang lain. Jaraknya tuh kaya nanggung jauh ga jauh, cuma Cipik ngotot mau taksi online aja. Wah Novia versi Hitler ini tidak akan membiarkan kemalasan terjadi. Pokoknya kesana jalan!!! ini di Bandung ya yang pohonnya banyak dan adem, harus jalan!!! makan tuh hasil kerja Ridwan Kamil.

NAMUN KUCIWA ternyata batagornya meh~ si tagor keras, alot, bumbunya rada frik. Udahlah paling bener batagor SSC juara dunia. Cuankinya enyaakk tp tiap makan cuanki tuh membuatku selalu berpikir "ini gak makan bakso sekalian apa ya, nanggung" kenapa coba diciptakan cuanki jika di dunia ini sudah ada bakso?

Di puncak panas-panasnya dunia kita kembali ke penginapannya buat tidur bentar dan ngecharge habis itu baru kita ke tempat si penyewaan mobil. Keputusan menyewa mobil sebenarnya adalah sebenar-benarnya pertaruhan karena Cipi level confidencenya untuk menyetir di luar kota tuh masih belum penuh. Ini ke Rancaupas lagi yang kita gatau juga bentuk jalannya gimana. PAKE MOBIL ORANG LAGI. Tapi karena akses transportasi umum kesana susah juga ya, baiklah kita ambil tantangan si gundul.

Sebagai tersangka yang menyasarkan begitu banyak orang karena kemampuan membaca maps yang buruk, hari itu aku bener-bener tegang. Duduk tegak, tidak menikmati musik, strict ke google maps all time, bye cita-cita menjadi passenger princess.

SUMPAH I DID WELL SAMPE DI SATU TITIK adalah aku salah mengarahkan belokan wkwkwkw bangke. Oh oke tenang kan bisa puter balik. TERNYATA JALANNYA GANG KECIL DAN SUPER NANJAK. Cipik? panik, aku? panik, cat rambut? manic panic.

Akhirnya kita harus muter di pekarangan orang yang itu jalannya nanjak. Segala sholawat sudah diucapkan dalam hati. Aku sampe harus turun mobil buat menghalau motor2 yang mau turun atau mau naik wkwkw bangkeeee plis itu keringet udah keringet dingin. Untungnya berhasil dan kita bisa melanjutkan perjalanan dengan selamat sampe di Rancaupas (walaupun kejadian itu menjadi unforgiven list Cipik ke ak)

RANCAUPAS

BAGUS BGTTTTT hiks sedih bgt bagusssss ih. Beneran berasa kayak lagi syuting film Heart. Sindrom pemeran utama ini langsung memunculkan persona Acha Septriasa. Ih asli tempatnya super lucu, ada danaunya terus sekeliling kayak rerumputan dan pepohonan. Tapi karena nyampe sana kan udah sore bgt ya, jadi keliling bentar habis itu mandi.

KAMARNYA BAGUS. Walaupun lebih kecil dari yang dibayangkan. Standard Bobobox sih, lampunya bisa disetting terus bisa pake sound effect suara hutan hutanan. Canggih bgt kamarnya seru.

Anyway di Rancaupas tuh DINGIN BGT. Kayak waktu sore baru dateng aja itu 18 derajat deh kayanya. Karena kedua orang ini salah perhitungan akhirnya menggigil lah disana. Apalagi habis keramas rasanya kayak dibekukan. Makin malem dinginnya makin sip, jadi kita bikin mie kuah dulu, yang bodonya di dalem kamar dan bodonya tumpah bumbunya. Semalaman di kamar rasanya kaya cosplay terperangkap dalam cupnya pop mie soto.

Terus sebelum tidur kita bakar kalori dulu dengan JJS di daerah Bobocabin. KALO MALEM LAMPUNYA BAGUS tapi sepi bgt. Kita sebenernya cari bonfire gitu ya tapi ga ada. Akhirnya keliling-keliling aja malem-malem sambil nunggu kesurupan. Di akhir hari kita kemudian memanaskan bolu bakar tunggal roombutter (yang orgil enak bgt) sambil duduk di pinggir danau dan ngobrol. So sweet.

Waktu mau tidur kerasa dingin bgt buset. Selimutnya tuh sebenernya udah gede bgt dan tebel bgt tapi saking dinginnya kita masih minta extra blanket untuk menggulung diri jadi crab stick.

Day Two

Novia versi Hitler ini bangun tepat sesuai alarm pertama bunyi (demi Allah Novia sehari-hari yang bangunnya setelah ngesnooze alarm 10x cuma geleng-geleng melihat anomali ini).

Bangun masih anget karena digulung selimut. Ngeluarin tangan dikit langsung kerasa dinginnya sampe tulang-tulang. Ternyata dinginnya kemarin malem tidak ada apa-apanya karena paginya nyampe 12 derajat.

NOW YOU KNOW KENAPA LUNA MIMISAN WAKTU KECEBUR DI DANAU. Ternyata dia ngga lebay, emang gila lo Farel.

Novia Hitler kemudian mengoprak-oprak Cipi dan langsung berangkat ke kamar mandi jam 6 pagi di suhu 12 derajat celcius. Oh Novia sehari-hari will never.

Destinasi wisata pertama adalah danau di Bobocabin. Kita mau naik perahu dan cosplay jadi Acha Septriasa.

Mayan lah seruu dan bagus foto-foto di sekitar danau. Cuma rada canggung aja waktu mengayuh sampan berdua sama Aa'nya. Si Aa' beneran mengayuh dan aku hanya melakukan gerakan mengaduk dodol.

Lanjut kita ke the holy ✨PENANGKARAN RUSA✨

EXCITED BGTTTT sampe Novia Hitler comeback, dia berjalan dengan cepat dan mengoprak-oprak Cipi yang berjalan santai.

SERU BGT kayak di Eropa wkwkwkw bagusss tempatnya. Rusanya juga banyak dan lucu-lucu walaupun sering nyosor. Anyway walaupun dia herbivora tapi ngeri juga kalau dia salah mengartikan jari kita dengan wortel. Di sana foto-foto banyak dan mengelus rusa banyak-banyak. Walaupun mayan was-was takut diseruduk rusa bertanduk.

Dah mayan siang akhirnya kembali ke bobocabin untuk istirahat, makan, foto-foto (lagi) dan jalan-jalan. Sedihnyo, kaya ngga cukup semalem di rancaupas.

Perjalanan kembali

Perjalanan kembali ke Bandung lebih chill wkwkwk ga ada drama nyasar dan udah hafal jalannya. Sampe di Bandung kita juga wiskul-wiskul lagi.

Waktu itu yang paling diincer si Baso Goreng Anugrah. Ekspektasiku sih dia akan kaya bakso goreng di Malang yang dari ayam, ternyata ada mix ikannya gt, dan kalo dimakan banyak-banyak membuat eneg. Karena aku rada kalap aja waktu itu jadi beli banyak ternyata end up jd eneg bgt...bahkan sampe sekarang nulis ini masih kerasa dikit tu baso goreng wkwkwkw *trauma

Setelah keliling-keliling bentar akhirnya kita mengembalikan mobil lalu langsung ke stasiun. Cipi berangkat duluan ke Malang dan ak masih nunggu kereta ke Jakarta. Hiks sedihnyo sudah berakhir trip ini. Overall it was supeeeeerr fun, akhirnya aku dan Cipi menunaikan rencana liburan bersama setelah 7 tahun. Mau liburan lagi ga sie

My current mix bus. I usually change this up every few months but this has been a constant for me for the past 5 or 6. Love how the Vertigo and Maag work together to glue the mix together.  I usually start with them on and tweak the settings as i get deeper into the mix.  I find myself doing much  less additive EQ with the air band on.

When Everything Looks Like a Hammer... To Arms Commentary Part 1/2

Alright, sorry for the delay with this, I’ve been a tad busy what with the holidays and work and the holidays impacting work and-

But anyways, here’s the first twelve commentaries for the To Arms contest, the other twelve will come tomorrow along with a brand new one!

@bergdg​ - Ashmouth Crown

I really like the idea of getting an equipment off of a madness trigger. With that being said, I think this should do two different things. One, is giving it a regular mana and equip cost that's overcosted for what the equipment is. That way, players are encouraged to pay the madness cost, rather than pigeonholed into doing so. The second is replacing the current attachment to something similar to Grave Scrabbler, where it checks if the madness cost was paid before attaching. This would allow it to be a bit stronger as a card, especially when played outside of the madness archetype. I love the flavor though, and I don't even hate the discard ability, given we saw it on Hell Mongrel in MH2.

@machine-elf-paladin​ - Cloudsteel Cutlass

Okay, so the flavor hits me real nice. It's a floating sword, so it takes more effort to grab it if you're not flying. But the mechanics leave me wanting more. I get that +2/+0 for three mana in blue isn't nothing, but it leaves me wanting more. I would suggest giving the equipped creature a bonus if it already has flying, but that's not easily viable. Maybe a downshift to common as well as an increase of the equip costs by one each? But I still like the idea that the card explores.

@nicolbolas96​ - Dagger of the Thief

This is an interesting take on morph, and I can't say that I don't like the concept. That being said, I kind of think that there's no real reason to hardcast this. It's just strictly better to hidden-weapon-ify it, since it still gives the benefit as the morph. It's also kind of shallow as a mechanic, since it seems like it's going to always to be used as weird combat tricks, or maybe a Fake Your Own Death kind of card. If this is a mechanic you want to keep using, maybe it would be worthwhile to change it from just equipments to any artifacts. Or, make it morph. That way a player has to weigh the benefits of having another creature as opposed to a buff.

@mastemexeon - Frying Pan

Exiling cards as an equip cost is interesting. This, as well as other cards that use exile as a kind of second hand is a really interesting design space that has been partially delved into, but remains relatively unexplored. I'm not sure how to feel about the equip cost though. It feels like it's a tad cheap, given you can recast the cards exiled, as well as only being able to increment it once each turn. Plus, I'm not entirely sure how comfortable someone would be with equipping this to the creature it's attached to each turn. It's sort of complicated, and newer players might not understand why you're able to do that. In addition, the flavor of itbeing a frying pan is partially lost on me. Yes, it's playing on the phrase "out of the frying pan into the fire," but that seems like kind of a low payoff for a joke with this many moving parts.

@deg99 - Gideon’s Sural

Alright, Gideon's Sural. This is the main weapon of a well-liked planeswalker, so I can really see trying to come at it from a flavor perspective similar to Chandra's Regulator. However, I think that this is kind of all over the place. In addition, you're mixing two different counters, which the only existing planeswalker equipment (at time of posting) can't do by itself. Second, I think that giving out loyalty counters is good, but if the flavor is supposed to be about Gideon lending aid, it should be to target non-Gideon planeswalker. Lastly, I don't like having to equip this to Gideon each turn. Granted, you could always just put it on another creature until he attacks, but... It rubs me the wrong way. I really like the idea though, so if you don't mind me suggesting an alternative version of the card, I would probably play into the fact that Gideon isn't around anymore to use his sural. Treat this less as an extension of Gideon, and more so of a tool that he used that has signiicant value to the ones close to him. In fact, one person who might have found it come into their posession is Taranika, who is established to revere Gideon for his defense of Akros.

@snugz​ - Gilded Fiend//Beguiling Brooch

Ooh, a card that transforms between a body and a weapon. I think that this is a neat idea, and I like how this is meant to be something involving all-consuming greed. One thing that was overlooked though is that you can shut it off if you can kill the creature attached to it. Because of this, this can end up as a dead card on field if you're caught without two mana, which is hard with this card, but still. Perhaps the addition of a standard equip cost would help, or maybe change it to a leaves the battlefield trigger? Either way, I think that this just needs a bit of polish to be a really great design.

@askkrenko​ - Goblin Trenchcoat

God, I really like this card. It's such a neat concept and really well executed, to the point where you even designed around situations like ETB abuse. Unfortunately, I think the fact that all of the phased creatures don't stay phased out is what makes this card fall short. This does pose somewhat of a problem vis-a-vis the inpermanence of phasing clashing with the permanence of equipping, but even still I think that this is a really solid design.

@izzet-always-r-versus-u​ - Hieromancer’s Handcuffs

Usually relegated to Auras, this is a neat take on the Arrest effect. It does the bog-standard thing of restricting attacks and blocks, as well as the recent trends of suppressing activated abilities. This also has the added effect of being reusable, since the trigger to attach it is both on etb, as well as on an activated ability. One thing that worries me, is how it requires the target to be tapped. Maybe the ETB should forego the tapped clause, but to be honest, that's probably when it will work best, since it disincentivizes attacks.

@wolkemesser​ - Mantle of Mystery

Oh my. So, making something unblockable, as well as giving a power boost is not something to be taken lightly. Fortunately, this equipment only attaches to morphs. Unfortunately, this means that you have to be running morph if you want to play this card to the fullest. This is a problem that a few entries for this contest have had, so I think that boradly addressing it here where it's the main gimmick of the card should be fine. It's fine for cards to cater to certain strategies, and in fact, I would say that that's the best way to design cards. However, because of the nature of the game, you must make things usable to most players. Otherwise, the environment around the card has to compensate for it, forcing an overrepresented archetype. Pop equip on this and it's golden, especially with that sickass flavor text you've got on there.

@railway-covidae - Meandering Shellshield

For those unaware, this card is a reference to the card Meandering Towershell. This is, to be frank, a weird card to do a callback with, but that's not to say I don't like it. In fact, I actually really like it. It does things that green usually does, and gives your opponent a chance to kill whatever they want to before it hits the battlefield and makes it tougher to merc. It doesn't give the same p/t and keywords as the original Meanderer, but that's probably for the best given what they are. Nice job

@helloijustreadyourpost​ - Necrotic Exoskeleton

This is another interesting take on equipping the dead. I really like how this takes direct inspiration from both Glistening Oil and Grafted Exoskeleton, giving the whole thing a really nice Phyrexian vibe. In fact, it's so Phyrexian, I'm sort of confused why the watermark isn't on there. Regardless, good job.

@evscfa1​ - Opaline Moonsickle

If I had a nickel for each enchantment equipment submitted to this contest... I wouldn't have enough to buy a new joke. Anyways, this is really interesting, equipping once you get an Aura on it. It also gives a pretty decent amount of protection, causing removal to fizzle while keeping all your things. In fact, I might say that that's a bit too good, because with the right deck, you could end up playing solitaire. Add to that some constellation abilities, and you're kind of set to dominate in constructed. I would consider altering that bounce cost, either by adding a mana cost or something like sacrificing the sickle or an attached enchantment.

In BA, the reader finally gets to be a professor, is Al proud of the reader for achieving her academic qualification and being a professor? Or is he the type to feel some form of insecurity for her academic achievements?

I think he’s mixed on it. I feel like he likes her drive and stubborn will against all odds, and is obviously very intrigued and captivated by how passionate she gets while teaching her students or talking about the things she enjoys.

At the same time, I do think he feels sometimes she is out of his league/that if he hadn’t kidnapped her she would not have looked his way. I think he sometimes feels insecure in that sense.

I think he’s proud in a “look at what my love can do, she’s amazing and all mine” manner, but also bothered by the fact that she has gone so far in life at a much earlier age and that he feels like she could be with any guy she wants (which is funny, since Reader is extremely insecure, as we’ve seen with her confusion with Evan liking her).

It’s a bit of a mix. Overall I think he has a sense of pride over the fact that she’s accomplished these things and is “all his.”

Easy peasy sunday morning

Mencoba bertanya ke jutaan kalinya ke suamiku "kapan balik lari? Yaa atau sekedar jalan kaki aja dulu". Blio blg besok. Oke deal! Sekalian recovery kakiku yg pegel dibawa lari di aspal yg cuma 3k lebih ituu. Sad ihh knp yaaa~ aku saranin kita lari aja di sabuga, biar ramah anak jg, jadi kalo lari/jalan misah msh bisa di area situ. Pengennya mah ya di gasibu, cuma hari minggu kan ada pasar kaget kita males dgn keramaian itu. Track gasibu itu terpeweeee, hampir kek gor pajajaran. Berasa lari di treadmill lah pokonya. Kalo sabuga kan pasir tp ngga ngebul dan botak kaya saparua. Gpp lah pasir jg setidaknya ngga aspal teuing mengingat kakiku yg akhir2 ini agak ririwit hiks.

Minggu subuh siap2 tp gmnpun jg kalo bareng bocil mah segalanya teh banyak lamaaa. Kusiapin sarapan dikit aja, roti ceres dan puck plus susu coklat. Berangkat jam 6.30 utk aku yg suka lari dibawah jam 6 pagi itu terlalu siang huhu. Nyampe kesana jam 7 kurang lah. Penuuuh ya sabuga di minggu pagi tapi seru aja, suami sambil nostalgia masa kecilnya sering kesana katanya kan rumahnya di balubur plus blio dah lama bgt ngga ke sabuga bahkan dr kita pacaran kita berdua belom pernah kesana sampe saat ini bawa anak haha. Pernah dulu blio renang sama temen2nya deh, biasalah laporan dan kirim foto wkt jaman pacaran. Ah boro2 aku olahraga dulu maah.. Yaudah weh terakhir sering ke sabuga mah SMA dan kuliah pernah renang jg.

Suami jalan santai aja berdua nemo, menyesuaikan diri lagi.. Sedangkan aku? Recovery run aja santuy~ terakhir lari di track sabuga sama mama runner dan ica bestie, boring bgt dpt 5k aja. Skrg? Eeh 5k jg wkwk tiba2 nyeri tulang rusuk ah gatau knp pdhl tadinya mau 6k deh ih

Suami dan anakku udah istirahat dari tadi dipinggir track nyemangatin ibunya, lohhh initeh yg lari ibu deui ibu deuiii wkwkwk tp gpp kan pemanasan dulu dgn jalan kaki dan aku berharap suamiku kembali lg rajin larinyaaaa. Aamiinn!

Dahlah jam 8an kita keluar dari sabuga cari sarapan cenah, gatau deh bingung mokemana dikirain ngga ada cfd pas mau ke dago eeh di tutup ternyata lg cfd, wah kebetulan coba kita mampir yuu~ kangen jg dah lama ngga ke cfd, dulu sering bgt ke sana dari baru nikah, pas hamil, nemo baru bisa jalan. Terakhir sebelum covid itu 2019, riweuh bgt dia ee di cfd.. Dulu riweuh bgt ke cfd aja kudu bebawaan pampers yah begitulah punya bayik cm ke cfd aja bebawaan segambreng.

Dan akhirnya kita balik lagiiiii seperti biasa kita parkir selalu di area itb, warpas gt lah. Daerah situ kita selalu dpt jajanan2 enak haha.

Gabawa cash jalan dulu ke bank bca sambil lihat2 sekitar, banyak yg sepedaan dan yg lari mayan lah kebanyakannya yg jalan2 kaki aja. Agak aneh sih cfd skrg ko agak sepi yahhh.. Dulu itu banyak bgt event dan brangbrengbrong aja gt musik2, skrg bener2 hening udah mah ngga ada suara kendaraan tp aku malah enjoy keheningan dan org2 yg kurang banyak ituu. Suasana dago dan trotoar bagus utk pedestriannya dapet bgttt.

Udah dari atm balik lg ke area warpas nyari makan disitu, beli telur gulung kesukaan nemo, bapak beli eskosu, aku antri sate jando yg mayan antriannya huhu, selain ngantri proses grill satenya jg lamaaaa dah laper hamba tp udah kagok ngantri.. Eeetauunyaaa abis jandonya, jadi mix aja yg daging sapi udah mix jando plus yg ayamnya. 1 porsi udah pake lontongnya. Uuu tempting bgt pas dicobain enaaaak loh heeeyy bumbu kacangnya enaaak ihhhh.. Enak apa lg laper sih ah enak etamah benerr

Teman Hidup barangkali menjadi Top 3 Indonesian Novel that you must read setelah saya coba rekomendasikan berkali-kali kepada khalayak sejak 2017. (Sekalipun saya belum tahu buku mana yang akan menyusul posisi Teman Hidup-dan omong-omong, sebelumnya saya pernah melakukan review di portal yang sama dengan judul buku yang sama pula :D). Teman Hidup berkisah tentang kehidupan seorang gadis Bandung bernama Kinan yang harus berubah sekian derajat akibat nazar yang pernah ia lafalkan-bahwasanya apabila kedua orang tua Kinan tidak jadi bercerai maka ia berjanji untuk melampaui batas zona nyaman dengan menjelajahi Indonesia dari bagian barat hingga timur-dimana keinginan Kinan benar kontradiktif dengan bagaimana ia di kesehariannya. Kinan digambarkan selayaknya perempuan rumahan yang tidak suka bepergian sejak kematian neneknya, Eyang. Tidak perlu muluk-muluk dengan membayangkan bagaimana sosok Kinan menolak pergi ke luar kota bersama teman sebaya. Bahkan satu-satunya alasan Kinan mendatangi kampus adalah untuk berurusan dengan skripsi. Saja. Maka kau pantas merasa heran ketika Andaru Intan menguraikan profil Kinan dengan hiperbolis (setidaknya menurut saya) seperti yang dikatakan dalam buku bahwa Kinan berhasil menyelesaikan studinya di usia sembilan belas tahun dengan predikat cum laude, dua kali mengikuti akselerasi, dan dirupakan ibarat mix antara Maudy Ayunda, Nabilah JKT48, Dian Sastro-tetapi Kinan menolak untuk punya pacar dan payah dalam pergaulan. (Omong-omong, Kinan memiliki adik laki-laki bernama Krisna yang tidak disebutkan berapa selisih umurnya, namun saya bisa menerka bahwa Krisna adalah pelajar SMA dengan mempertimbangkan usia Kinan).

Pun tentang bagaimana anggapan orang lain terhadap keluarga Kinan. Katanya, mereka adalah keluarga sempurna yang sukses menjadi pengekspor makanan ringan dengan merek yang mudah dijumpai di swalayan. Berkebalikan dengan asumsi tersebut, mereka bukanlah keluarga sempurna seperti yang digambarkan. Hubungan orang tua Kinan dan Krisna tidak sebaik yang dibicarakan orang. Rumah tangga mereka sempat berada di puncak kegentingan dengan mempertimbangkan perpisahan sebagai jalan keluar, dan sebagai impact-nya, Kinan dan Krisna serta-merta bernazar dengan konsekuensi yang benar-benar bertentangan. Maka ketika orang tua Kinan merasa sanggup menyelesaikan masalah dengan kepala dingin hingga akhirnya masalah tersebut selesai, masalah baru justru membelenggu kesadaran Kinan dan Krisna. Krisna telah berjanji untuk meninggalkan DOTA sebulan penuh. Sementara Kinan harus menepati janjinya untuk berkeliling Indonesia dengan perasaan sepenuhnya sadar bahwa ia tidak hanya harus keluar dari zona nyaman dengan melepas label anak rumahan, tetapi juga bertaruh dengan waktu sebulan lamanya untuk bertualang di alam bebas tanpa tidur di ranjang. Andaru Intan menamainya backpacker. Barangkali kau akan menjadi lebih penasaran setelah membaca blurb-nya.

Bukan maunya Kinan untuk bernadzar aneh-aneh. Ia lakukan itu karena sangat menginginkan orang tuanya tetap bersatu. Dan, nadzar Kinan adalah mengelilingi Indonesia bagian barat, yang akhirnya balik ke arah timur. Ketemu cowok di kereta yang akhirnya jadi teman perjalanan juga bukan bagian dari nadzar Kinan. Dan, lewat cowok ini, yang namanya kayak nama pohon-Jati-Kinan melanglang buana ke Ijen. [Sebagian isi teks sengaja saya hilangkan karena dengan membaca blurb-nya dengan jeli (lagi-lagi menurut saya) maka kau akan langsung terantar ke puncak dimana Teman Hidup akan berhilir]. Ha-ha-ha

Dan, ya, sebagaimana paparan singkat yang Andaru Intan sertakan di halaman belakang buku, Kinan bertemu Jati, mahasiswa ITB yang hendak melakukan perjalanan ke Ijen. Kinan yang dasarnya memang pergi tanpa (tahu) tujuan tentu serta-merta memohon kepada Jati untuk bergabung. (Di Ijen nanti Jati tidak sendirian, omong-omong. Ada Mega, Ebi, sepasang kekasih-Elle dan Rendra yang apabila mereka berempat disatukan dengan Jati maka terkumpul kelompok pendaki bernama D' Mountain).

Masing-masing karakter membentuk perannya di sini. Dimulai dari Jati yang rupanya merupakan sosok yang sangat agamis dari Bali. Andaru Intan berhasil menghidupkan karakter Jati dengan sangat dinamis. Pada permulaan cerita dimana ketika Jati pertama kali muncul, berbagai bentuk emosi direfleksikan untuk mendukung (dan memperkeruh) suasana hati Jati saat itu. Seperti pesan singkat Elle di grup perpesanan D' Mountain perihal ketibaannya bersama Rendra di Banyuwangi, tempat tinggal Elle-sekaligus menjelaskan bahwa Rendra telah bertemu dengan keluarga Elle. Ditambah lagi waktu pendakian yang jelas semakin dekat. (Oh, ya, mereka melakukan pendakian sebab di salah satu malam dari keseluruhan waktu yang akan mereka habiskan bersama adalah malam ulang tahun Jati, dan mereka memiliki ritual unik semacam Truth or Dare sehingga Jati merasa akan dihabisi pada malam itu. Sebab ia begitu menghindari satu pertanyaan mengenai perempuan mana yang sedang dicintainya dan Jati yakin apabila ia harus mengatakan yang sesungguhnya maka saat itu juga pertemanan mereka harus menjadi lebih renggang dari biasanya. Berbagai bentuk pelajaran hidup menyoal pertemanan, keluarga, religi, dan lain-lain banyak dihidupkan oleh Jati. Dari perjalanannya bersama Kinan sedari Bandung hingga Stasiun Gubeng, ketika mereka menepi di kota Probolinggo setelah sembilan jam perjalanan, hingga mereka terpaksa mengubah destinasi tujuan setelah pemberitahuan Gunung Bromo ditutup, merayakan ulang tahun Jati di Ijen, menuju Bali dengan menjadikan rumah dan keluarga Jati sebagai rumah sementara yang begitu hangat, kemudian Lombok, Labuan Bajo, Pulau Komodo, Ternate, dan Tidore-Jati tidak lepas memberikan kuliah singkat untuk Kinan dari hal-hal sederhana yang dilihatnya termasuk lirik lagu Sajadah Panjang yang dilafalkan seorang pengamen di dalam bus yang saat itu melaju meninggalkan Surabaya. Kuliah dari Jati yang paling berkesan buat saya adalah ketika mereka sedang berada di Labuan Bajo: "Semakin aku belajar, semakin aku merasa kecil, Kinan. Kita berdua ini sedang berada di satu titik Labuan Bajo. Dan Labuan Bajo ini adalah salah satu titik di Indonesia. Kepulauan Indonesia ini adalah satu garis di bumi. Bumi adalah satu titik di galaksi. Dan galaksi kita adalah satu titik di alam semesta. Betapa agungnya Allah itu."  

Keseluruhan, saya berani memberi rating ☆☆☆☆. Saya setuju dengan ulasan yang diberikan Faisal Oddang bahwa Teman Hidup berhasil membuat saya sebagai pembaca untuk terus mengikuti perjalanan Kinan dan Jati hingga muncul pertanyaan besar tentang akankah Kinan berhasil melakukan nazarnya atau tidak, bagaimana pertemanan mereka apabila misi Kinan dalam melakukan nazar telah selesai, bagaimana keluarga Kinan, dan jawaban dari bagaimana-bagaimana lainnya yang akan kau temukan dengan menamatkan 373 halaman buku ini.
