More random thoughts on ITV "Emma":
- on first watch, the pace felt too fast, but on a rewatch it seems to fit the speed of Emma's mind, and the story has a rythm of comic inevitability.
- Kate Beckinsale is great at playing Emma's natural and effortless inclination for leading and commanding
- The way Emma imagines her mini romantic stories is really funny, like when she pictures Miss Bates narrative about the boat and Jane and Mr. Dixon as a dramatic rescue during a huge storm
- I really like how often Emma smiles at Knightley; it fits Emma as the initiator who asks Knightley to dance
- I like this Knightley (even though he could have used some adjustments); he knows what's right and wrong but his seriousness is a kind of an idiosincracy... like he's not to be taken too seriously. Being blunt is just his thing. .He is also good at playing jealousy :)
- "This is coming as you should do, using your carriage for once, like a gentleman, instead of walking everywhere" - I love this scene in the novel, it's well played in the movie :)
- I really liked one small scene at the Ball at the Crown: Miss Bates' voice as background noise, talking about Churchill and Emma (who are dancing), Knightley and Jane Farfaix in the frame, both looking lovingly (olivia williams so wonderfully subtle) at their respective beloved objects
- Harriet and Emma talking about Frank Churchill, with Emma thinking Harriet is in love with Churchill: "Harriet, I've reformed. My lips are sealed." 😆
- "Oh God, that I had never met her!" 😁
- Harriet as Emma's nemesis 🐍lol
- The movie really shoots itself in the foot with those "I hold you in my arms when you were a baby" lines, because if I pretend they're not there, I find this Knightley and this Emma fit well in the characters' background, age difference, and dynamics of the novel. It's such an unnecessary stain.
- Emma repeatedly remembering Harriet with a "oh, Harriet!" 😆
- Also love Samantha Bond as Mrs. Weston; she held Jane Farfaix's hand during a meal, which I found a wonderful detail; her interactions with Knightley are also good humored :)
- The final dance is endlessly rewatchable ❤️

ITV gets Extraordinary
In a deal just announced, ITV is getting the UK broadcast rights for two Disney+ shows — Under the Banner of Heaven and Extraordinary. I thought I’d mentioned the latter before, turns out I misremembered. Extraordinary is a comedy sci-fi show I’ve started but not engaged with enough to get through. That’s no reflection on the quality of the show, just my ability to distracted at the drop of a…

The Telegraph
the Princess of Wales on Friday will host her annual carol concert, Together at Christmas.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester are expected to assemble at Westminster Abbey for the service. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and Mike and Zara Tindall are also thought to be on the guest list.
Prince George, and Princess Charlotte, will almost certainly join their parents, while Prince Louis, could make his debut.
The King and Queen, who attended the event last year, are unable to make the concert due to long-standing commitments elsewhere.
The Together at Christmas service is arranged by the Princess to honour those who have gone above and beyond to help others throughout the year.
This year, it will celebrate “the golden opportunity” of new birth.
The service will be linked to the Princess’s work on the early years, recognising the efforts of those who work with babies and young families.
The congregation will be packed with midwives, health visitors, early years practitioners, nursery teachers and community volunteers.
Readings will be delivered by speakers including the Prince, Micheal Ward, Emma Willis, Roman Kemp and Jim Broadbent. A specially commissioned poem written by Joseph Coelho, the Children’s Laureate, will be read by Leonie Elliott.
The Westminster Abbey choir will perform and there will be performances by guests including Beverley Knight, Adam Lambert, Jacob Collier, Freya Ridings and James Bay.
The service, now in its third year, is broadcast on Christmas Eve on ITV.

Some 1996 (ITV) Mr Knightley (Mark Strong) propaganda, because my poor man is going to need it, whoever it is that he goes against.
People have objections about this version of the character. I understand them. I'm gonna try to add some perspective to them, and then go for actual pros that I think should be considered!
First, the two lines of horrors about baby Emma. My only defense, I plead at the jury, is... should be blame character and actor for screenplay writer Andrew Davies' crimes?
Second, this Mr Knightley is too angry/forceful. Well, Mark Strong agrees with you! in The Making of Jane Austen's Emma, he says that "At this point I worried that, because I was always having a go at Emma, the audience might not see the love behind it". He also thinks that a lot of that emotionality is driven by Knightley starting to feel things he'd never felt before, and not knowing how to deal with them: "He’s probably going home in the evening and thinking, 'Why on Earth did I do that? What is happening?’"
From there to the beloved scene of 2020 Mr Knightley arriving home and throwing himself on the floor, there isn't a step, even. In that way, this version of Knightley was very influential for both adaptations that came after; 2009 takes from it the emphasis on the aspect of Knightley being an engaged administrator of his estate, rather blunt at times, but always kind to those that depend on him.
Besides all this, you must acknowledge his exasperated delivery of the "His aunt is in the way. His aunt dies!!!" speech is hilarious :P
On with the pros!
This Knightley takes an interest on the servants' lives, knows them by name and always greets them when he arrives at Hartfield.
The way he says "excuse me, sir" to Mr Elton after he snubbed Harriet is glorious:
Tumblr media
He has some moments of subtle acting that I love, like this exchange of glances with Emma about Mrs Elton:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(in general I feel he has great chemistry with Emma whenever they are having A MomentTM, but YMMV). He has this way of dissolving a stern face into a lovely smile when he sees her:
Tumblr media
The way his voice breaks when he finishes delivering the "badly done" speech after Box Hill
His reactions DURING the Box Hill scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His smile at Miss Bates' self deprecating joke!
Tumblr media
His disappointment at Emma's hurtful comment!
Tumblr media
His concern for Miss Bates!
He has merits! And lovely green eyes.
Sorry but I adore you and your true dedication to the cause - I have added this to the Mark Strong Mr Knightley Propaganda under his poll but will post the full ask here too!

Susannah Harker first wore this dress as Jane Bennet in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice. The following year, in 1996, it was seen on Samantha Bond as Mrs. Weston in the ITV production of Emma. Eight years later, it appeared on Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Griaznov in the 2004 reality show Regency House Party. It was later spotted in Persuasion, where Rosamund Stephen wore the dress as Henrietta Musgrove in 2007. In 2019 it was worn by Alexandra Roach as Diana Parker in the last episode of the first season of Sanditon.

Checking in to let you know your Mark Strong propaganda on the hot jane austen men poll has convinced me to finally seek out the Beckinsale Emma. I didn't watch it in my first Austen adaptation glom (around 2000/2001) because he looked so *dour* and there was Jeremy Northam and also that hair. In my defense I was young and dumb. But the gif of the smile convinced me. Now to figure out how to watch this darn thing!
Hi!!!
What an honor! *sweats profusely*
I do not intend to make it look like the best adaptation of Emma ever made (though it is my second favorite after 2009), but I do think people in general give it less credit than it deserves -I'm aware a lot of it has to do with directing choices that are shocking and Andy being weird on main with Certain LinesTM.
Mark Strong is a bit of an acquired taste. I didn't like him much on my first watch, but on a rewatch I noticed other things that made me really like his performance, once I got the first "shock" of some scenes over. But I have also always been a fan of his, so.
In any case, 96 also has Olivia Williams' Jane Fairfax, which I think is the best we've ever gotten, hands down, and Samantha Morton is always a treasure. I also really really like this movie's take on John Knightley. He's very little in it, but I love every scene he's in.
As to where to find it... the usual streaming suspects, if you don't buy dvds/blurays would be britbox or uktvplay, or Acorn.
There's a couple low-res versions on YT.
