Nicotino College AU - Chapter 17: Perfect

Materpost of the AU

Previous Chapter

Summary: Niccòlo attends the music school and is friends with Filippo, who started helping at the photography course after getting famous for his lgbtq+ activism as a photographer and youtuber. Marti is studying journalism in the same university and is convinced by Filippo to attend the photography course mister Boccia and Filippo himself are offering. Marti turns out to be terrible at it and needs Nico’s help to make a perfect final project to get approved.

June 14th

Nico locks his car’s door and reaches for Marti’s hand automatically as soon as they start walking. Marti can feel his hands are a bit sweaty and he keeps looking around nervously.

— Nico… Are you, maybe, a bit nervous about meeting my friends? — Marti still asks even though he is pretty sure of the answer.

— Is it so obvious? — Nico avoids Marti’s gaze, so Marti stops him, the two of them now standing under a streetlight some meters away from the bar where they will meet Gio, Eva, Luca and Elia.

— I wouldn’t say it is obvious, only that I can notice it. — Marti explains, nudging Nico’s shoulder. — It is gonna be fine, you will like them. And they like you already.

— But they never met me. — Nico says, his brow furrowed in confusion.

— Yeah, but I talked about you. — Nico lifts his head, a smile forming on his face. — Once or twice. — Marti adds, but Nico’s grin is too wide already and there’s nothing he can do about it.

— That is sweet of you. — The playful tone on Nico’s voice is enough of a evidence the boy is more relaxed now, so Marti just takes his hand again and guides him to the bar.

Once they enter the place, Marti takes a look around until finding his friends in a table close to the bar’s window. He and Nico walk in their direction, still holding hands.

— Hey, how are you? — Gio asks, getting up to hug Marti and Nico, being followed by Eva and Luchino. Once they all were properly introduced to Nico, they sit down at the table again.

— Where is Elia? — Marti asks, noticing the boy is missing.

— He said he is on his way… With a surprise, apparently. — Gio explains, shrugging his shoulders. Marti tilts his head, wondering if maybe this surprise has anything to do with the talk he had with Elia in the day before.

— If I am being honest, I’m even a bit scared now. You never know what Elia will come up with. — Luchino said and Marti could tell he wasn’t entirely joking.

— Anyway, we will know soon enough. — Eva ends the topic and turns to Nico, too excited for Marti’s liking. — So, Nico, please, tell us about this miracle you are operating.

— Huh… Miracle? — Nico asks, narrowing his eyes.

— Yeah, making Marti actually leave his house after six pm. — Eva completes, a satisfied half smile on her face. Marti rolls his eyes, but Nico laughs along with Luchino.

Well, at least Gio is loyal enough to contain himself.

— To be honest, I am just as intrigued as you. — Nico answers. — It is a true mystery. — He adds, reaching out for Marti’s hand, that now lays on his tight. He likes the feeling: a small bubble of Marti and Nico even in the middle of everyone elese.

After Eva successfully breaking the ice by making fun of Marti’s old soul, Gio and Luchino feel at ease to pretty much interrogate Nico even with Martino’s exasperated sighs at every unnecessary question they make.

Luca is the first one to give in to Nico’s charm as soon as he hears about the cat Nico rescued and that now lives with his parents. After seeing about fifteen pictures of Cosmo on Nico’s phone, Luchino pretty much considers Nico to be his new best friend. Well, Marti is not gonna complain about being so easily replaced if it means Luchino will drop all the questioning.

Gio seems to be softening already, but Marti can’t think about it much longer because Elia finally shows up on the bar’s entrance.

He is not alone though. Right by his side, there is Filippo, twisting his ring time after time. Marti smiles at him, signaling for them to come his way. He turns around to meet Luca and Nico’s confused gazes. Weirdly, Eva and Gio don’t seem to be that surprised.

That is going to be an interesting night.

— Ow, that is so crazy! Filo and Elia, who would have known? — Gio laughs a bit too much and Elia cracks an eyebrow at him while Filo tries to act offended. They have filled everyone in their relationship story and how Marti finding out about it made the two of them decide to stop hiding it.

— You already knew, didn’t you? — Elia leans forward, staring right at Gio, who looks down at the floor and back at Elia.

— What? No. No, how could I even— Come on, there is no way.

— Yes, he did. — Eva interrupts her boyfriend’s rambling.

— And you knew it too? — Filippo asks, alarmed.

— In our defense, you two are ridiculously bad at keeping secrets. It only took some weeks of you two being awkward for us to realized what was happening. Even Marti figured it out. — Eva explained, pointing at Martino.

— Ouch, Eva! — Marti protested, a bit offended.

— Well, I didn’t know it! — Luchino offers, trying to help.

— That was expected. — Gio replies without thinking twice and Luca quicks him under the table, making Gio groan in pain.

— Can any of you hold a conversation without offending somebody at every three seconds? — Filo questions, throwing his arms around Elia, who falls easily on him.

— Not really. — Eva answers honestly and Nico laughs, his head hidden on Marti’s shoulder, an action that is becoming common between them.

— God, what a impression are you making on poor Nico. — Elia dramatically says, shaking his head in fake disapproval.

— Don’t worry about me. I’m loving it. — Nico smiles at them, his arm hanging around Marti’s shoulders.

— Let’s say Nico is just one of those people who likes to see the world burning. — Marti jokes, messing up Nico’s hair.

— So you have that in common, huh? — Filo says back, making everyone laugh while Marti gives him the middle finger.

— Guys, I love you all so much that I don’t even mind third wheeling everyone on this table. — Luchino struggles to get the words out, which is most likely the consequence of the drinking competition he had with Eva.

— Oh, God, why does Luchino always make love declarations to us when he is drunk? — Gio questions, his chin resting on his hand while he pretends to be in deep thought.

— Don’t be mean, I think it is very sweet of you, Luca! — Eva nearly drops her glass while pointing her finger to Luchino in excited support. Nico barely holds his laughter at the scene.

— Maybe it is time you two start having some water, okay? — Filippo offers.

— Holy shit, if Filo is being the responsible one then we must be in deep shit! — Luchino’s poor attempt at a whisper to Eva is heard by the whole table.

— Everybody gets love declarations and I get this? How is that fair? — Filippo throws his arms to the air, disappointed.

— Karma is a bitch, I guess. — Nico shakes his shoulders and Filo rolls his eyes to him, trying to pretend he is angry.

Marti laughs again, resting against Nico’s arm, that caresses his shoulder distractedly. That is when Marti catches Gio looking at him. He smiles at his best friend. Gio smiles back.

It’s like they are having a whole conversation without any words. That’s when Marti is sure Nico has won Gio over. He’s not even surprised about it. There’s just this light to everything Nico does that makes it almost impossible not to like him. It’s what drawn Marti to Niccòlo at first. Gio nods at him and that is enough to make Marti smile widely.

Martino turns to look at Nico again and the boy is in deep conversation with Luchino, discreetly taking the glass away from him and giving it to Filippo, who is trying to stop Elia from laughing at the situation.

— Good job, Ni. Luca loses all sense of self preservation when drunk. — Marti whispers and Nico leans forward to him.

— Ni? — He repeats and only then Martino realized he had just given him a nickname. — I like it. — Nico kisses him in the cheek and continues talking with Luca while Marti is left a bit astonished by how nice that felt.

He had boyfriends before, yes. But like Elia had said yesterday, the few relationships he had didn’t end well. He was too young, too immature, not ready to own who he was.

Nico wasn’t his boyfriend yet, but what they had was real, so they probably would get there someday.

He never introduced someone to his friends so early, but he also never felt so sure about anything as he felt about Nico.

In that table there were some of the most important people of his life and the fact they all liked Nico meant the world to him. Things are falling into place, finally.

Of course, Elia choses that moment to throw one of the french fries right at Martino’s face, taking advantage of his momentary distraction.

He laughs as if they are still sixteen. Marti gives up on being the bigger person and throws another one at Elia, hitting him in the forehead. Filippo rolls his eyes at them as if he is an example of maturity while Gio and Luca laugh their asses off. Eva and Nico just stare at each other, both settling for silently judging Elia and Marti.

Everything is perfect.

Isak, Lucas, Matteo & Co: Behind the Name

I’ve been thinking about the different Isaks and their names, and tried to find out why they are called that way (and why Lucas is so popular). This is mostly from memory/wikipedia, so if anyone has something to add please feel free to do so!

“Isak” is pretty obvious because that was already discussed in the fandom, but here’s a reminder nonetheless: In the Old Testament, Isaac is Abraham’s son, Genesis 21:21 describes his birth. That’s why the number and the pool scene are so important - Isak is rebirthed through his kiss with Even, he’s finally able to live his life in a real way and so on, we all know how the story goes. I’m sure it’s also a reference to Isak’s mom being religious.

“Lucas” is a biblical name again, as most on this list are. This is something almost every remake picked up, though I don’t think that the connection to his mother is present in each (Skam Italia hasn’t shown any sign of Martino’s mum being super catholic yet). So why “Lucas”? One reason could be that this name is even more in-yer-face with its connotations than others. Lucas (or Luke) is one of the four evangelists in the New Testament, so we have a) a big name that is hard to miss/a more obvious link to the theme of religion and b) a direct link to Christianity in particular. Furthermore, Lucas’ gospel is a bit more special than the others: Instead of jumping between events, it chronicles Jesus’ time on earth from beginning to end. He also tells rather than speculates about it and was said to be a doctor/historian (so here we have a rather scientific approach to religion, which fits Isak’s character). Plus, Lucas apparently warned about people who claim that the end is near (parallel to Isak’s mom). He’s also the patron saint of students, surgeons, physicians (again, reference to Isak!) as well as artists (metaphor for Isak watching over Even the artist?)

“Matteo” is found in the bible as well, he’s also one of the evangelists (aka Matthew). I guess the Druck people probably wanted to use another name cause Lucas was already taken at that point? Not that this stopped skam spain or skam nl. But I do think that they took into consideration that french Lucas already existed. And Matteo is a great choice - the connection to religion is still quite clear, and they used the italian version of the name (in german it’s Matthias/Matthäus) so we all know about Luigi’s heritage (I actually wonder if that will be adressed further - making Matteo italian is smart on one hand, because we strongly associate Italy with Catholicism, but since Skam Italia doesn’t really go down that route it might be a bit stereotypical? Idk). The name itself apparently comes from the Hebrew “Mattitjahu” which means gift of God or God-given.

“Martino” is also an important christian name. The first thing I associate with it is Saint Martin (Martin of Tours), who was a roman bishop: He refused the roman military (miles Ceasaris = Soldier of the roman emperor) and called himself a miles Christi (Soldier of Christ) instead. He wanted to leave the military, but wasn’t allowed to quit for a long time. When he finally became bishop, he also founded a monestary and did a lot of other great things, which resulted in him being the patron saint of travelers, beggars, soldiers, several cities, recovering + reformed alcoholics (make of that what you want) and more. There’s also a legend that says that during Martin’s time as a soldier he cut his cloak with a sword and gave one half to a freezing beggar. I guess that resembles Skam Italia’s Martino in terms of caring and showing kindness? He seems less aggressive on the outside than Isak, and is generally more soft. Also the cloak sharing thing reminds me of him literally sleeping on the floor when Gio stayed over (although that was for different reasons) or giving Luchino the most adorable hug when he forgot his birthday.

I’m not entirely sure about “Shay”. Google says that in Irish, it means “the stately, dauntless one”. I don’t know about stately, but I like dauntless as a character trait! It reminds me a bit of the snaking, but it’s also about Shay evolving as a person and being unafraid of who she is and who she loves. Another fun fact, it means “gift” or “present” in Hebrew, which is lovely as well. Apparently it’s also a diminutive of Isaiah - I’m not sure if that has something to do with “Isak”, but that would be cool!

Kinda at loss with “Robbe” though ... I know that the name might come from Robert, but that means “bright fame” and I haven’t watched enough of wtfock to say that this reflects Robbe’s personality, but I still doubt that the first thing that comes to mind is bright fame with this character so. But if there’s a different meaning in Flemish, please let me know!

Sooo I guess this shows that the theme of religion/christianity in general plays a big role in Isak’s character arc? I mean we been knew but I just thought that it was cool that this is mirrored in most of the remake’s choice of name!

Paperinik Vs Darkwing Duck (Con aiuto del maestro Lucio Leoni)

Dunque... senza nulla togliere a Darkwing Duck... io scelgo e sceglierò sempre Paperinik. Che siano le vecchie storie o le nuove (o quelle che verranno) non posso fare a meno di adorare il personaggio. Anche ci sono storie dal punteggio basso, anche se ci sono molte discordanze tra una storia e l'altra, anche se alcuni nemici sembrono usciti dal supermercato sotto casa... Paperinik è Paperinik.

Innanzitutto, dietro la maschera c'è un personaggio ancora più amato: Paperino, personaggio simpaticissimo nonostante perda spesso la pazienza e la sfortuna lo perseguiti. Proprio per questo, ha ancora più motivazione la nascita di Paperinik, perché troppe storie finivano con un Paperino perdente.

Mi ricordo quando da piccola girando in una piccola biblioteca, per puro caso trovai un librone (sì, delle dimensioni di un atlante) dove raccontava il riscatto di Paperino di fronte alle malefatte dei suoi parenti. Me ne innamorai all'istante. Poco mi importava il peso nel portarlo a casa (ancora adesso mi chiedo l'utilità a fare volumi così ingombranti) o il disagio nel girare le grandi pagine... Paperinik mi ha fatto amare ancora di più Paperino.

C'è da dire che nelle prime storie Paperinik ci andava pesante con i parenti, ma con il tempo e il susseguirsi di sceneggiatori, il personaggio migliorava e si evolveva.

Certo, tutt'altra storia sarebbe stata se Paperinik fosse nato negli Stati Uniti, dove c'è un po' più libertà nelle storie. Qui in Ialia infatti, ha avuto alcune "limitazioni" che hanno reso le storie adatte anche per i più piccini. Forse è un bene da una parte, perché è bello che un bambino possa appassionarsi alle sue storie, ma dall'altra parte non sempre si poteva dare più profondità (come già citato nel video) al personaggio.

E' anche vero che un bravo disegnatore/sceneggiatore riesce a tirare il meglio di sé, se viene messo alla prova con dei paletti. E c'è da dire che si meritano un applauso i disegnatori italiani, perché nonostante si tratti di un "fumetto" (un genere che ancora oggi viene sminuito) danno anima e corpo per realizzare belle storie (sbavo di fronte ai colori e ai disegni). Ciononostante, non posso fare a meno di pensare, che senza quei paletti Paperinik avrebbe raggiunto dei livelli spettacolari.

Ora, io non posso tanto giudicare Darkwing Duck, perché anche se la sua sigla mi rimaneva impressa, il suo fumetto non veniva venduto, come lo era Paperinik su Topolino. Quindi io sono cresciuta a base di Paperino, Paperinik e cereali a colazione XD E il mio giudizio quindi potrebbe essere influenzato dalla mia infanzia, però è anche vero che Paperinik non si è fermato a quelle storie del passato. Ha continuato a crescere e crescere e diventare quello che è oggi.

Con l'evoluzione del web è ora possibile far conoscere a più persone Paperinik. Vedo commenti entusiastici da chi legge per la prima volta le sue storie, e che potrebbe avere più fans con un po' più di diffusione delle sue migliori opere.

Non posso certo imporre alle persone che sono cresciute con Darwing Duck (perché non conoscevano ancora Paperinik) a preferire un altro supereroe.

Il fattore nostalgia ha un gran peso.

Però, ho il presentimento che se PK fosse nato negli Stati Uniti, magari ci sarebbero più persone che lo preferirebbero a DD.

Io poi, DD lo confondevo con Paperone per via delle basette XD E non andavo pazza per la figlia (ma anche Qui Quo e Qua non erano i miei preferiti... fino a qualche anno fa).

Per non dilungarmi troppo (perché ne avrei tante da dire in favore di PK), penso che Paperinik è un personaggio che continuerà a vivere e migliorarsi per tanti altri anni. Ma se anche così non fosse, resta uno dei migliori fumetti/personaggi italiani. E non lo si può mettere in dubbio.
