Einar Nerman created illustrations for sheet music covers starting in the 1900s. due to the invention of the upright piano, they became more accessible and fit more modestly into people's homes. if affordable, families whom had access to them created a greater demand for sheet music. there were many music shops opened around this time, so Einar's work ended up selling more. he was influenced by artists such as William Nicholson who created many different works such as illustration, still life, landscapes and portraits with a variety of different mediums such as woodcut and wood engraving. he also illustrated children's books. he was also inspired by Ivar Arosenius who was a Swedish painter and picture book illustrator.

it seems that Nerman derived a lot of inspiration from illustrators mainly for books directed towards children, which is evident in his caricature style with bright colours and simplistic features. later in his career he ended up illustrating for playing cards and children's books as well. these artworks have very bright colours which Einar has always worked with and simplified shapes for caricatures.
Tumblr media
his work in sheet music cover illustration was well known for having striking colours with limited colour palettes, his designs and colours were very eye catching to onlookers. the contrast he uses with flat black colour against a bright background is quite eye catching and makes the character stand out. these works were lithographies. the characters shown were again simplified caricatures and used very simplistic linework to show facial features and expressions.

he was also inspired by Aubrey Beardsley, who created many ink works in the 1890s. Beardsley’s work is inspired by Japanese woodcuts. his art was erotic and explored grotesque and elegant themes. compared to Nerman’s work, his art is very mature and detailed. everything is created in black and white ink and the style is very intricate. I personally really like his work and his art style. I think his work is very pretty

A book of his drawings appeared in 1979: Caught in the act, it was set harrap,London with an introduction by his friend, lyricist Sandy Wilson. There is much additional work information in Caught in the Act, as well as example of his work, sometimes said to be " Beardsleyesque", and his celebrity caricatures are as distinctive as those of Ralph Barton.

Artist Research- Aubrey Beardsley and Einar Nerman
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I prefer Aubrey Beardsley's work as it's so intricate. It appears to be illustrated with a fine liner and also reminds me of Kentaro Muira's intricate details from his manga Berserk which is another reason I prefer it as I see something that I enjoy in it.
Tumblr media
The way fine lines are used to build shape and movement seem very similar to me.
Einar Nerman's work just isn't as impressive because the artwork is so simple. Though I understand the more cartoon approach I just prefers the other artist. The colours are simple and the characters are funny shapes unlike Beardsley's propionate/realistic approach to the characters. You need only look at Nerman's work for a couple seconds and then there's nothing else to look at but because of the amount of detail in Beardsley's work you'll always be bale to catch something you've missed
