The Sign and it's Magic and some WILD arse theories

This is not meta this is me cataloguing my brains current tracking of The Sign and it's magic - plus some wild ass theories I AM SO EXCITED (I also know nothing about the mythology/stories on which any of this is loosely based) (If anyone has done or does meta on this, particularly the magic stuff I am SUPER curious but not the best at scrolling tumblr rn so feel free to tag me)

Okay SO

So green eyed stabby boy got green eyed RIGHT AFTER Phayas necklace broke off so it's reasonable to conclude these thins are connected

He ?wasn't a willing vessel, did the Mors essence somehow sneak in with the purpose of killing Phaya

Then we had Tharn use magic while grasping HIS necklace (his necklace which I have NOT been paying enough attention to)

Phaya burned green eyed Mor (revealing his green eyes) AFTER the necklace got put back on, but I am PRETTY SURE Phaya has touched him before then, so that suggests something happened to awaken his powers, presumably the same thing that awakened Tharns (what is that thing? Stress? Proximity? Time?)

@plantsarepeopletoo pointed out we had water dream for Tharn and FIRE dream for Phaya which is FASCINATING especially with the reveal of the giant (?fire?) bird at the end of the ep that is presumably Phaya

Question

Has the necklace been suppressing their powers? - things changed when Phaya's got broken and then Tharn ripped his off to throw that punches

Random Thoughts

Okay so we have been repeatedly told that Tharn did very bad things in his past life and the Karma of that means he should have died as a child, and is still constantly in danger (and maybe even his parents paid the partial price with their deaths...).

We know Green Eyes is possessive of him and currently the doctor, and presumably has always been the doctor and presumably knows who Tharn was. (Abbot seems to know this?)

Tharn is a ?water spirit, I know nothing. Seems to be not disimilar from a siren who lures men to their deaths

We had the cop dead in the second ep (I think) in the ocean, still not clear if suicide but that Phaya investigated and was then lured out to sea - siren links

Green Eyes is the water dragon

and then Phaya is a fire bird? pheonix?

(OH MY GOD THE WINGS, THE TATOO, THE FOESHADOWING AHHHH)

Wild Ass Theories

OKAY SO lets assume Past Tharn and Past Doctor are both water spirits/gods, they were bound together in some way (married? or the mythological inter-being equivelent?).

Past Tharn lured men to their deaths (siren thoughts, linked to the man who died and the fact that Phaya got lured out into the ocean - also might explain the bad karma)

Past Tharn lures in Fire spirit bird who is injured, something something something they fall in love.

Green eyes isn't okay with this for a multitude of reasons shit goes down and ?everyone dies

Details unknown, looks like we're getting backstory next ep

BUT

We do know that Past!Phaya is also someone past!Tharn wronged right? so maybe past!tharn betrayed his love in the end, and that is how they died... or maybe past!Tharn killed himself after his love died as a result of Tharns betrayal...Maybe even swearing that in his next life he would give his own life before letting him die again (thereby explaining the focus of the visions)

Did green eyes die at all then or has he been living on, waiting for his love (Tharn) to reincarnate?

Phaya seems to be getting at least some memories back, more than Tharn so far. Phaya remembers him as a siren and now he remembers his past self too at least a little. Of course this is a dream, it may well be only half remembered when he wakes.

Other Thoughts

Of course this show also has a whole crime thriller thing which I am loving and I have thoughts and questions about that too, but they're mostly magic related... (why the vision of Tharns dad at THAT moment? was the truck vision of his dad, cause the show seemed to imply it was though his visions are normally future. Although he also saw that girl die which was in the past and seemed to be about proximity and perhaps the strength of her emotions idk. So what about that proximity triggered the vision)

I think that's emptied my brain, thankfully, GOSH I LOVE THIS SHOW

So this year Magic: the Gathering took some bold new directions in its aesthetic, We got a cowboy set: Outlaws of Thunder Junction, which up until now would have been too modern for a card game that defines itself as fantasy, and Duskmourn: House of Horror, which is even more modern, because it's a world inhabited by the characters in 80s horror flicks, including 80s clothes and haircuts, and initially seeing the art I really thought that WOTC may have gone too far with this one, but I think WOTC may have actually managed to make it work this time, I think they may have made a coherent fantasy world based off of 80s horror tropes,

there's something about the way this setting is explored in the cards that makes it feel alive, with stories and personal experience, and a community of people who barely survive day after day in a house of horror, it feels surreal in exactly that way that makes it feel deeply human, kinda like one of the alternate universeses in everything everywhere all at once,

see magic no longer does blocks, which makes each plane feel quickly visited and short lived and I think it's kind of made each new plane we've visited feel a bit more shallow, because the game doesn't have the time to ramble on about the minutia of each plane in that way that gives a world that feeling of life, and I think Duskmourn manages to tell a convincing story even with the reduced amount of time

EEAAO faces a similar problem, it wants you to witness the breadth of experiences in more universes than there is time to thoroughly explore in the runtime of a conventional movie, and it solves that problem by being incredibly sincere, by making each universe so known, and so tropey that we're essentially already familiar with all the characters when they're introduced, we've seen each story somewhere before, we already have reason to care about each character, they're more like pure symbols than specific people, and so the movie can skip to focusing on the feelings those characters go through, rather than getting all caught up in explaining the details of each universe they explore

And I think that's what makes Duskmourn successful from a flavor perspective in a way that OTJ just didn't manage,

OTJ suffers from the fact that it's a story about colonialism told by colonists, had it leaned more heavily into the film tropes it may have even been able to convince us otherwise, but instead it wanted all the cowboy puns it could take, as well as mechanics like crime and outlaws, and also wanted to seriously confront the racist history of cowboy films, and also wanted to feature a bunch of recurring characters from magic's past just kinda sprinkled in all over the place, like a marvel movie, and it ended up caught up in the middle between silly and serious, and the aesthetic of this set ends up feeling like it's straight out of a free to play mobile game, it's incoherent, insincere, and too caught up in explaining plot to ever make any of the emotions of the characters feel real

Duskmourn on the other hand is unabashedly sincere, all of the humans in this set look like their art was taken from a freeze frame of a horror movie, it's not ashamed of leaning into its source material, so many of the cards look like protagonists caught in the middle of a plot, but none of them are legendary, they're the normal residents of this plane, be they elderly mentors who warn of danger, or rebellious teens in the depths of isolation, or snarky nerds who think they've got the ghosts figured out, we're not being told to relate to these characters because they showed up in some magic set 15 years ago, but because they're that person, from that horror movie we've watched and the other horror elements only manage to make the sincerity even deeper, the clowns and dolls are silly freaky, they create the atmosphere of cheesiness that lets your mind engage directly with feeling, just like the silliness in EEAAO, and then the fears are literal embodiments of feelings, just like the glimmers with optimism and joy, more symbols than character, the set is literally about the feelings these characters have to endure to survive, it's brilliant! It makes me feel something!

I don't even know the official story of Duskmourn, I don't think I really care what happens to kaito or the wanderer or nashi, they're part of the wider magic story which is always a bit stilted and a bit awkward, but I know antisocial loner, I care about her, I care about the world she lives in, it looks coherent in its psychedelic surreality, I relate to living in that kind of world, everyone was wrong to be so down on this set's aesthetic, it does wonders with it

Oh boy. This story lives in my head like a squatter that I can’t chase out but also refuse to provide for. i just,,,, im stuck on the magic system kdjfldslkdjfkds

okay so the premise is that a prince and a princess in a modern magic/urban fantasy setting are arranged to be married, but they both run away and end up joining the same gang of vigilantes. never having seen each other before, they meet as strangers and fall in love, eventually realizing that they were supposed to be married anyway this whole time. 

My doc for this is way too long but I’ll give you the highlights of the two main characters! feat. the picrews I made of them at 2am yesterday.

Princess Abeni of Lekko, alias Nkiruka (meaning, ‘the future is greater’). 

She is equally passionate about battles and weaponry as about makeup and nice clothes, and she usually combines the two, teaching herself to fight in ballgowns and heels out of Spite. Femininity and strength are synonyms y’all

Abeni’s got a battle goddess vibe, but she’s also naive and idealistic. She’s a little brash, bluntly honest, and entirely unselfconscious. She’s... not very conscious of others, either, and can be insensitive, but she’s kind, and is trying to be more selfless, like her mother was. Most of her heavy emphasis on maintaining her femininity as a warrior comes from her memories of her mother, who taught her those skills and traits. 

Her purpose, which she discovers once she joins the vigilantes, is to make sure that the people of the Silent Desert (also called the Forgotten Lands or Blighted Lands) have the lives and opportunities they deserve - for now, by freeing those held captive by criminal gangs, and, if she can summon the courage to return home, then by applying herself to the politics of her kingdom to design and enforce new policies that will protect the Forgotten Peoples. 

Prince Nāzān of Nukhis, alias Shahīn (meaning ‘kingly, pertaining to kings’). 

He’s an absolute shit and a show-off and the sole reason this story is modern magic instead of classic medieval is because I wanted him to have a tiktok. 

He appears to be chill and reckless, but he plans everything out in advance - he’s the kind of person who spends 2 hours perfecting a tousled bedhead look before leaving his room.

Unlike Abeni, Nāzān isn’t one for battle - he’s more of an academic, devoting himself to Knowing all sorts of obscure trivia, especially with regard to magic. He’s performative, independent, and apathetic - but he's also surprisingly attentive and easily identifies others’ needs, even if he doesn’t bother to do anything about it. He’s completely incapable of being honest about himself, except around kids, who see through his nonsense - which is maybe why he's so good with them.  

His purpose, which he discovers after joining the vigilantes, is to provide a safe and loving home for all the children they rescue in some of their missions, and to use his magic to find a way to restore the Blighted Lands to something living.
