Your trek journey started with Himalayan Hikers, the beautiful mountain town of Leh, all our trekkers reach Leh by flight this is the best option for your reach to Leh, altitude is 11400 feet above sea level, and the trek beautiful Zanskar River which liws totally frozen during the December to Feb, Peak Winters Trek, So, probably the best time to do Chadar Trek is February because the ice remains harsh and stable. Trek starts from the freezing point of the Zanskar River and that is Chilling.

Therefore, the “Chadar trek” is also known as “The Frozen River Trek”. This Trek is over a frozen river in the Zanskar region of Ladakh and it is different from all other treks in the Himalayas.

Ice Covering and Freezing Cold in Chadar Trek

The Chadar trek is over a frozen river and the ice can turn dangerous sometimes but can also be safe the other times. But, it is important to find a safe path over the perilous sheet of ice.

During the trek, you do not camp here at the meadows or the forest clearings but inside the caves which are present along the banks or you set up the tents on stable ice.

Be Aware During Chadar Trek (Not for Beginners)

A land of freezing winds and blazing sunlight, Ladakh is a cold desert lying in the rain shadow of the Great Himalayas and other smaller ranges. Little rain and snow reach this dry area, where the natural forces have created a fantastic landscape.

Ladakh forms part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. Parts of Ladakh are under the illegal occupation of Pakistan and China. The border of Ladakh touches those of Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, the Kashmir Valley (India), and Himachal Pradesh (India). This region is made up of two administrative districts — Leh District, with its headquarters at Leh, and Kargil District, with its headquarters at Kargil –and covers a total area of about 59,000 square kilometers.

Ladakh is at an average elevation of 2,700 m to 4,200 m. The aridity of this region is due to its location in the rainshadow area of the Great Himalayas, elevation, and radiation of heat from the bare soil. The most striking physical feature of Ladakh, however, is the parallelism of its mountain ranges. The region is extremely dry, with annual rainfall as low as 10 cubic centimeters.

In Ladakh, large rivers and their tributaries have carved deep gorges far below their steep banks. However, their water is not of much use as the terraced fields lie high above the gorges.

This results in the freezing of all conceivable water resources. During summers the maximum temp. increases from 20 degrees C to 38 degrees C in July and August

Difficulty level

Because the top is relatively high in elevation, we strongly recommend a reasonable level of physical fitness. The arduous journey of Chadar trek winter hiking  with longer distances and ascending elevations to be covered in a short span of time would require acclimatization. We advise trekkers to physically and mentally prepare themselves prior to this trek. Throughout the course, all groups will be guided by our experts for trekking equipment and any impending terrain.

Any medical assistance that is required will be provided at any point of the journey; however, trekkers must consult their professional care before beginning any trek. We also strongly advise trekkers to learn about altitude sickness and to notify our teams as soon as any symptoms appear.

Permit and Passport

Tourist don’t require permit for Leh, however, all foreigners are required to be registered at Drass, Rumtse and Serchu if they are travelling overland. Those traveling by air get themselves registered at airport. Tourists are required to get permit for restricted areas like Tsomoriri, Tsokar and Pangong Lakes, Dhahanu and Nubra Valley, which can be obtained from District Magistrate, Leh, through Travel Agents at Leh.

Avoid acute mountain sickness

Acute mountain sickness can occur to any one at an altitude above 10,000 ft. above sea level, therefore, make it sure to take complete rest on the day of arrival.

How to Reach Leh or ladakh 

Overland Approach

Overland Approach – The overland approach to Ladakh from Kashmir Valley via Kargil is approx. 434 Km, which remains open for traffic from early June to November. The most dramatic part of this road journey is the ascent up the 11,500 feet / 3,505 m high Zoji-La, the pass in the Great Himalayan Wall that serves as the gateway to Ladakh. The J & K State Road Transport Corporation (J&K SRTC) operates regular Deluxe and Ordinary bus services between Srinagar and Leh on this route with an overnight halt at Kargil. Taxis (cars and jeeps) are also available at Srinagar for the journey. Groups can charter Deluxe and A-class buses for Leh, Kargil or Padum (Zangskar) from the J & K SRTC at Srinagar.

Manali to Leh – Since 1989, the 473 km. Manali-Leh road has been serving as the second overland approach to Ladakh. Open for traffic from around mid-June to early October. This high road traverses the upland desert plateau of Rupsho, altitude ranges from 3,660m to 4,570m. A number of high passes fall enroute among which the highest one known as Taklang-La is world’s second highest motorable pass at an altitude of 17,469 feet/5,235m. Himachal Pradesh Tourism, HRTC and J & K SRTC operate daily Deluxe and Ordinary bus services between Manali and Leh. The bus journey between Leh and Manali takes about 19 hours or two days with an overnight halt in camps at Serchu or Pang. Shared taxis are also available both from Leh and Manali

Credit cards are accepted by very few hotels and tour operators but there will be 2.5% service charge. The Jammu and Kashmir Bank and State Bank of India has placed ATM Machine in Leh. The State Bank of India accepts visa and mastero but this ATM is not very reliable. J&K Bank ATM is more reliable but accepts only Mastero.

Air Travel

Indian Airlines http://www.indian-airlines.nic.in operates regular flights to Leh from Delhi (fare USD 135), Four flights in a week from Jammu and once in a week from Chandigarh and twice from Srinagar. Jet Airways http://www.jetairways.com also operates daily flights between Leh-Delhi (fare USD 143).

Internal Transport

The cheapest way to travel within the region is by public buses, which ply on fixed routes according to fixed time schedules. The most comfortable and convenient though expensive mode of travel, however, is by taxi, which are available for hire on fixed point-to-point tariff. For visits to the newly opened areas of Nubra, Dah-Hanu, Tsomoriri, Tsokar and Pangong Lakes. It is mandatory to engage the services of a registered/recognized travel agency for making all the requisite arrangements including internal transport. Detailed information about bus schedules, taxi tariff, travel agencies can be obtained from the Tourist Office or Local travels guide “Reach Ladakh”, available at Book Shops.

Leh is the headquarter of Leh District, and the largest town of the region. It is located to the north of the Indus River at an elevation of 3600m above the sea level. The town is dominated by the nine-storey Namgyal Palace and Namgyal Tsemo (victory peak), built by Tashi Namgyal on his victorious in reunification of the Upper and Lower Ladakh. Leh became the capital of Stod (upper Ladakh) during the reign of king Graspa Bum- Lde,who ruled Ladakh from 1400 to 1430 AD. In the later period, Leh became an important center for trade in Central Asia. Leh remained merely a headquarter of Ladakh district until 1974, when Ladakh was opened for foreign tourists. Since then period Leh became the centre for tourism related activities in the region.

Fact File

Leh provides medium and lower class accommodation, with hundreds of guesthouses and hotels, which can suite every budget. Restaurants offer good multicuisine for a reasonable price. There are number of tour Operator/Travel Agents around the town, which look after traveler’s requirements.

As you walk around the city, you peel back the layers and beneath all the flaws and scars, you will find a genuinely captivating person. A person that knows how to push your buttons and make you forget the pandemonium, if only for a split second. Through the dollar pizzas on the street corners. Through the sheer magic of Central Park and the museums. Through the Manhattan skyline; hands down the best skyline in the world. Standing next to the Hudson, under the Brooklyn Bridge, with Lady Liberty keeping a quiet watch from a distance, you will be powerless as New York sucks you in. One glittering high rise at a time. Dreamy eyed, you cannot help but stare in wonderment. Hundreds of floors, thousands of windows. What goes on inside? And the lights! Yes so many lights. What could be a better tribute to Tesla, Faraday and the like?

“In general, the east coast of the United States is on a much more human-scale. Relatively small states with trains taking you across borders within a couple of hours at the most.”

“Going west of maybe Illinois, they started drawing great big rectangles for states.”

“And then there’s Texas. Vast open skies in an almost revolting shade of blue. Just as vast are the expanses of highway, further than the eye could see, or care to see. Wide, long and monotonous. Not a single human-scale building in sight”

“And who the hell builds highways passing through the center of a city!? Makes going to get some milk feel like a great expedition to the other side of the world.”

More chuckles. 

Then a brief silence, during which I am suddenly reminded of where I am - in a lounge on the upper deck of an A380. A massive ship hurtling through the ether, pushing the speed of sound. A big TV screen near where I am standing silently glares back at me indicating that -50 degrees is but a mere 10 meters from where I am standing. Yet here we are, B and I, chatting like two friends catching up over coffee. 

But of course, we are not friends. Not even acquaintances. She is on the Emirates cabin crew. And I am just a passenger.

Back at my seat, halfway through an episode of Chernobyl, I pause to stare out of the window. Beyond the wing, which seems to stretch out to eternity, a smudge of orange is forcing its way through the royal blue of the sky. I can hear the muffled yet reassuring boom from the four Rolls Royce engines. It is then that I realize that there is nothing about the A380 that is human-scale. There is nothing about the skies which she inhabits that is human-scale. I've travelled on the beloved Super dozens of times. Yet I continue to be amazed at the size and scale with which she operates. Devouring continents and swallowing oceans. Bringing the other side of the world just a little closer to home. 

A friend of mine often describes journeys on the A380 as the closest we can get to the long sea voyages on gigantic ocean liners in the 1930s. And he is right. Two decks with so much space to stretch out. Bars, lounges, showers - no expense spared in ensuring luxury. Imagine peering out of the window from your first class cabin on the Queen Mary and seeing nothing but vast open sea. Right now I am doing exactly the same. Only from 36000 feet above the Earth, and all I can see is the vast open sky. Far below, Moscow and St Petersburg slip behind us. Scandinavia and the Atlantic Ocean lie ahead. As we burn more fuel, over North America, we will eventually settle in the exclusive airspace of flight level 410. 

The Boeing 747 is a work of art. Sheer poetry. The Airbus A380 however, is a lesson in outsmarting the laws of Physics. It is an absolute whale of a plane that looks like it should never leave the surface of the Earth in the first place. But somehow it does, through the most languid and sluggish of take offs.  Once up at cruising altitude though, it is steady ship all the way to your destination. The ability to punch through the sky without even the faintest of trembles is simply unmatched. I continue to stare wistfully out of the window, thinking about how much I’ll miss the A380 when she’s gone. She’s right up there with the Concorde in that nothing like this will ever be built in my lifetime.

Resting my head on one of the fluffiest pillows ever to have taken flight, I gaze at the roof of the cabin - tiny twinkling stars gently coaxing me to drift off into a deep sleep. And frankly, it is not hard to. The bed is completely flat and the mattress is more comfortable than the one I have at home. The blanket is ever so soft. The fake gold and wood around the windows is not something I’d furnish my home with, yet up here in the sky, it somehow adds to the coziness. From my own little cocoon, I can see neither the aisle nor other TV screens. Not a single window shade in the cabin is raised. I don’t remember the last time I fell asleep on a plane without an eye mask.  All I can hear are the engines whirling away, and the hushed sound of the air beating against the fuselage - no more than a relaxing white noise. 

In the moments between lying down and falling asleep, I am thinking about the countless journeys I’ve made with Emirates over the last two decades. Leaving home as often as I’ve had to, I’ve come to really treasure the sense of familiarity that an Emirates flight brings to me. I’ve never stopped to think about it before but there is a certain warmth and tenderness you feel when you have an old faithful travel companion to share your journeys with. And Emirates has been that companion for me, helping me wipe away the homesickness. Slowly at first, then all at once. The boarding music that says “Hello Tomorrow”. The inflight announcements that say “Tayaran Al Emarat”. The reassuring voice of Sir Tim Clark answering questions on the default podcast channel. The wavy curves on the cabin wallpaper. The cabin crew with their brown blazers and their red hats.  When choosing an airline to fly, it is hard to look past this comfort of familiarity resulting from a bond first formed unwittingly, many years ago. And strengthened over numerous journeys from one side of the planet to the other, including this one. Before I can process any more thoughts, I slip into a happy and peaceful sleep. We are probably somewhere over the North Atlantic. But in this moment, it hardly matters.

Six hours have passed. B is on hand to wake me for dinner. It seems the crew has saved the best meal till the very end. Three courses this evening, starting with a chick-pea salad that doesn’t make you hate your life with its dreariness. I politely refuse the alcohol but ask for a piece of garlic bread on the side. Which is brought to me, warm, from a basket lined with cloth. The main course is served with the Jeera rice cooked in just the right amount of butter. The ratio of jeera to rice - perfect. The Rajma has the power to rival any dhaba in North India and along with it is a second curry made with melt-in-your-mouth soft paneer. Actual phulkas to go on the side, instead of pita. 

And if you're going to go full North Indian with your meal, you need some achaar. Which obviously is on my tray as well. Emirates just knows how to serve Indian food. If I had any doubts about this, they are well and truly shattered when B brings the dessert. Four of the finest pieces of Rasgulla. Sometimes you have a meal so sublime that you are moved to shedding a tear or two. This AVML has been one such. 

I call B over one last time to thank her for everything. She passes me a brownie, one very similar to those I’d been wolfing down earlier while talking to her in the lounge. This of course, brings the widest of smiles to my face. Not because I like brownies. But most certainly because of the fact that she had noticed. And remembered. The crew has been absolutely stellar on this flight.

Business class. A crew that knows how to pronounce your ridiculously long last name. A crew that has time to engage in conversations with you. Meals served on crisp white table cloths. Meals that come in courses. Flat beds to stretch your legs. Flat beds to rest your weary soul. On a grueling ultra long haul flight across 10 time zones, almost anything that seeks to make you feel more earthly is highly appreciated. 

This has been Emirates Two Eleven Super - Dubai to Houston in just under seventeen hours, albeit the best seventeen hours of my life.

10 reasons why I love India

Last December, I ventured my solo backpacking to India for a month. I couldn’t believe it’s already April! My trip felt like ages ago. I’ve always wanted to visit India, but it wasn’t until I moved to Australia to finally give it a go. I read so many blogs over the years, mostly about female travelling alone. I did get mixed  reactions from my family and friends when I told them about my trip. India is considered as the most dangerous country for women. I feel safe the whole time travelling mostly alone in ten cities and seven states. I have no words how incredible India is. It’s overwhelming with over one billion populations and each state is unique and different.The culture, colour, food, diversity, religion and people blew me away. It’s a wonderful country to visit. If you’re planning to go, do it!

1. It’s cheap! I stayed in hostels, spent less than $20-$25 a day for foods sometimes more if I feel like eating Western food, shopping and eating non stop even the hotel accommodation is affordable. I’m still dreaming of Amritsari kulcha and chole!

2. FOOD!!! 

Days before my trip my host family took me to an Indian restaurant. My first Indian food ever! I had no idea what thali or dhal were. I was clueless. I had my first thali in Amritsar. Before I know it, I’m stuffing myself with samosa, lassi, go to the nearest shop to get jalebi, licking my fingers clean from eating delicious curries. In less than 24 hours I was obsessed! 

3. Witnessing the Aarti ceremony, life, death and rebirth in Varanasi

Varanasi is such a unique and fascinating place. It’s the oldest city in India. A walk along the Ganges river will take you to a different world from the 24 hour cremation, religious ceremonies, animals and people bathing, washing clothes, scattering ashes, baptism in the holy river all at the same time. The scene was mind blowing. Monkeys and cows everywhere and many more. We rented a boat to watch the evening Aarti traditional spiritual ceremony. On my last day, I rented a boat in a very peaceful and misty morning happily taking it all in. It’s one of the highlights of my trip.

4. The majestic Taj Mahal

When my sister and I made it on the top of Huayna Picchu mountain, we couldn’t see the Machu Picchu because it was covered in fog. I had a similar experience with the Taj Mahal. Just like in the Machu Picchu, seeing the fog drifts away and finally seeing the beautiful marble mausoleum was everything I wanted it to be. It was magical and even more special because it was built for love. 

5. Wagah border ceremony

The border closing ceremony between India and Pakistan was unbelievable and bizarre at the same time. A great display of patriotism! I found a video on YouTube before and during the ceremony. It was so much fun! 

6. Rajasthan Forts and Kingdoms

Rajasthan is the land of maharajas, forts, tigers and kingdoms. I spent two weeks exploring the cities of Jaipur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. 

Jaipur

My first stop was in Jaipur also known as the “pink city.” When I think of Jaipur, first thing comes to my mind was me being miserable and sick on my birthday. I was in Jaipur when I got hit with a very nasty “Delhi belly” a stomach flu suffered by visitors to India. I was in bed for two days. I still got the chance to see a little bit of the city, the famous Hawa Mahal and the Amber fort. 

Udaipur

Udaipur is also known as the “city of lakes,” “Venice of India,” and “romantic city.” It’s vibrant, laid back, walkable and picturesque. I couldn’t be happier to finally find a “real coffee” ever since arriving in India. My friend from Delhi joined me and we celebrated the new year watching fireworks in the rooftop. We spent our time browsing the market stalls, hanging out in the lake drinking chai tea, took a boat ride and admiring the architecture and street arts. It’s definitely one of my favourite cities!

Jaisalmer “golden city”

Jaisalmer wasn’t part of my itinerary. A lot of people recommended the dessert safari package. I didn’t like the idea of a camel ride, so I chose to walk with my friendly camel. Our tour guide made the most delicious dinner and we gathered around the fire listening to the stories about life in the village. Sleeping in the desert under the blanket of stars was breathtaking!

Jodhpur “blue city”

I enjoyed my early morning stroll in the narrow streets of the blue city, eating my way through the old city market and the clock tower. 

7. Golden Temple in Amritsar

Amritsar is the holy city of the Sikh religion. The stunning Harmandir Sahib or the golden temple is the number one place to visit. It’s open 24 hours a day.  Langar is a community kitchen open everyday serving free food to over 100,000 visitors per day. Hundreds of volunteers serve wholeheartedly day and night. Such a dedication and faith. I don’t know what it is, but with thousands of devotees visiting, it’s so calming and peaceful inside.  

8. Rail journeys

I fell in love with train journeys when I was backpacking in Europe. The bustle of Indian railways is one of a kind. It’s nerve wracking, chaotic, fun and exhausting. I booked all the classes from first to the cheapest class, second seating. It was interesting.. I love waking up in the chant of “chaiiiiiiii” If you are going on a long journey, avoid drinking a lot of water unless you’re brave enough to use the toilet. I also took the overnight bus a few times that was a different experience. Delhi to Varanasi took over 14 hours. There are many options to travel around India depends on your budget. Train journeys are my favourite. 

9. The art of Masala Chai tea

Chai tea is an integral part of Indian culture. Chai wallahs (tea vendors) are everywhere in the streets of India. I couldn’t help but stop and watch the tea vendors expertly pouring tea from cups to cups. I’m a coffee person, but I came to love masala tea and the aromatic spices. 

10. The people. The best part of my trip is hands down the people I’ve met along the way. I meet a family of twenty; cousins, grandparents, uncles and aunts travelling together. They’re warm, friendly and they look after me the whole trip in my long train journeys. I will never forget the women in the village standing tall and beautiful in their colourful sarees carrying pots filled with water. They’re bold and self sufficient. People in the slums of Mumbai welcoming us to their homes, tea vendors sharing words of wisdom, bunch of 20 something guys talking about the past, present and future of India - their future and more. No photos just memories that I can go back to over and over again. There’s no way I could share that feeling. I had no idea I fell in love with the country so much!
